avenue. the three people that were killed and one person that was injured was in the car that was broadsided. this is very early in the investigation. police are still trying to piece things together. we talked to an officer a short time ago and here is what he had to say. >> did witnesses tell you anything about.... >> i don't have anything right now. we are investigating the collision and very early so there will be a lot of work to do still. >> reporter: now, police are still trying to find witnesses to find out what happened at this time. we do not know the names or the situations involving the victims in this case or whether the driver who apparently hit the car is at the hospital. that is all being pieced together but police will be here at the scene for the next several hours. live in daly city, john alston. >> ama: bay area neighbors tired

are being afraid are taking crime fighting in their own hands. is in the neighborhood where they are fighting back. lisa? >> reporter: that is true. there are two of many residents say... that since there aren't enough police officers they have to work together to feel safe again >> at hammond park, residents want to see more families enjoying themselves, but instead they are seeing just the opposite. >> we see the break-ins. we've seen vandalism at the park. >> that is why the neighborhood association has taken matters into its own hands. >> it's part of the security guard to patrol the park to try to keep extra eyes on what is going on. >> association hired the uniformed guard in january because of the crime fight.

according to the police department, property crimes citywide are up nearly 30% and 2012 auto theft jumped up 71%. >> meantime, the city's police department continues to struggle with staffing levels. currently there are 978 officers. five years ago there were 1400. >> that is number one, more police officers patrolling. >> they did not want to be identified, but his home was burglarized recently. he like so many others want more police officers on the street and now his neighborhood is also taking action. >> the police department stretched so thin, the neighborhood association has started a volunteer neighborhood watch program. >> retirees patrol the street daily. they released budget message this week and plans to hire 100

more officers this year. >> my priority will be public safety. >> but the police officers' union does not buy it. they say residents are the ones hardest hit. >> they are paying for police services yet they are having to go out on their own and hire extra security guards to what the city should be providing. they are getting double taxed in a sense. >> and the city promises more police officers will be on the street soon. friday, 44 people will graduate from the police academy. live in san jose tonight, "abc 7 news." >> oakland residents and officials met at a public safety forum to build bridges between the community and police. mayoral jean quan participated in the entire four hour townhall. they brainstormed and came up with suggestions to improve safety and community policing.

one man said this scene of people working together happens all the time in oakland. >> that is the bright side of oakland. there does exist a bright side and there does exist a group of people that care about the community and who are just as involved in the community as any other city in the bay area. >> oakland officials say there will be another townhall meeting before the end of the month sxl. another effort to get weapons off the streets of solano county. they took in 344 weapons ranging from shotguns to a military rocket launcher. every gun turned in was exchanged for either cash or gift cards. people had different reasons for turning in their weapons. >> you can get grocery or gas. the most important thing is getting the guns off the street. >> i got cash for grandkids and a christmastime comes rolling around i got a lot of grandkids. it does help. >> in all, authorities spent

supporters held a rally tonight at a mall near sacramento after a gay couple says they were kicked out for holding hands. abc reporter has the story. >> there wasn't much kissing happening at protest called a kiss-in but there was love and support by individuals at the galleria mall. >> it doesn't matter. it's love. >> the event quickly organized on social media after a young gay couple said they were asked to leave on monday for holding hands and kissing in public. the mall's management was asked they were never asked to leave but sexually explicit conduct but they didn't elaborate what the conduct was. not everyone believes the statement. >> if they were appropriate i don't believe why they were escorted out the building. >> a different couple said they

building is historic pier undergoing top to bottom renovation. when you are ready to give up, call valerie. she is moving expert. >> i am. its funny job. >> she and the moving team determined they could move 60 exhibits a day. then they factored in packing time, thousands of feet of plastic wrap, carts, blankets and some serious labeling skills to make sure that everything ended up in the right place. >> the move of the exhibit to work with the construction completion. >> the final answer, it took 9,000 man-hours and 200 truck loads to move the museum in two months. mixed into that were special challenges including huge pieces of a 250-year-old tree and a giant wind harp that used to make i can. we built the harp and it was

well above free line but the trees have blocked the wind. >> it's a steep ladder not suitable for hauling down a harp so they brought in crane to do the job. it took a while to get the harp loose. >> then suddenly it was cruising through the air getting a last look over crissy field before it ends up at new home where the harp will be set up once again to catch the wind. another challenge came from this tornado exhibit. it's a long time visitor favorite, but it's finicky. the tornado arrived in pieces. peter is the man who has to make it work. they have to make sure it is fit with the top section tucked in with the pipes in the ceiling. >> can anybody get a visual? >> it's too close. 18 foot exhibit is too tall for the space. >> we have to get creative.

>> after many hours of assembly moving and cutting, exhibit is finally in the proper position. now, they have to get the tornado to form. the vapor is created by an ultrasonic tranducer in the bottom of the exhibit. >> it's tiny that suspends like a gas. >> the vapor is not hot. once it is rising the team has to figure out where to big the panels to force the air currents to form a tornado shape. >> this could be hours of tweaking and testing. >> pretty quickly they know it is going to work but it will take more time to make the tornado consistent. >> that is good one. >> dan ashley, "abc 7 news". >> ama: now that the old exhibit are in place, the attention is to focus to creating new exhibits. they are making a free open festival and special exhibits in trucks in special spots around san francisco and big finale at
