take a look at this house, this is where this all happened and it does not look that bad and it doesn't look like much from the outside but it is what firefighters discovered last night inside that is raising a lot of questions. this happened at 11:30 last night when novato fire district got a call from a neighbor about smoke coming from the abandoned home. they arrived and of course it was abandoned. no one was inside. but what they found was an extensive marijuana growing operation. that is why there will be a much larger investigation later this morning. they are not sure how large the operation is but firefighters do say the fire starts in the basement. how it started, that will be also part of the investigation. >> two-story house but it is terraced so you walk in on the second floor and the fire starts on the basement of the first floor downhill and it has been firing through the walls of the

house. it was quite an operation for firefighters to get through the house. >> if this home was abandoned, the big question is, who was inside? who has been inside? neighbors say the homeowners actually have nod been here and have not lived here in years. a lot of questions to be answered and investigators like we mentioned will be here. we are told when it is daylight they will move in and look at the scene and investigate further into this large marijuana-growing operation that firefighters found here last night. we are live in novato for abc7 news. in three hours the election to select a new leader for catholics around the world will begin in the vatican. our news reporter is live in the newsroom with a close are look at the process. >> the process began long before most of us were aware with 115 cardinals taking part in the

services alleges a former teacher bound a two-year old girl's wrists and ankles with tape and made her sit on a cot while she took a photograph because the bill refused to take a nap. no one knew of this incident until months later when the photo was then to other teachers a at social gathering. abc7 news reporter, amy hollyfield, will have more on the developing story in 30 minutes. >> an oakland man is out prison after serving 14 years for a sexual assault he did not commit. this is the 38-year-old johnny williams leaving a few role office after a judge threw out the conviction on attempted rain charges. new d.n.a. results proved his innocence. he was convicted for 1998 attack on a girl in oakland. her family identified williams, a former neighbor, as a possible suspect. he was later convicted. the northern california innocence project worked on the case for two years. the district attorney says that the victim is understandably

upset. >> this morning, an oakland woman's family is turning to the public for help in finding her. 391-year-old mask layers -- maskaleris was supposed to be on a flight to houston to visit her brother. oakland police are investigating the disappearance of the woman. >> a man speeding away from the scene of a hit-and-run caused a crash that killed three family members. the 28-year-old faces three counts of murder for saturday night's crash in daly city. he is accuses of hitting a car and then a second car with four people inside killing a 14 -year-old boy, his brother, and their mother. there is a street side tribute where the accident happened. >> the sonoma board will director a proposal to give cyclists and pedestrians more protection making it easier to

>> san rafael, south bay, pleasanton and all the bay area, this is abc7 news. >> this week the head of the transportation security administration plans to defend his decision to allow passengers to now carry small knives on planes again. the new t.s.a. policy would allow small foldable knives with blades up to 2.36" as carry on items. t.s.a. head will testify before a house homeland security committee on thursday laying out how the policy change will affect security lines and how a threat assessment determines small knives could not cause catastrophic damage. this has been criticized by airline employee groups.

wrists and the ankles when the 2-year-old refused to take a nap. she showed the group a picture of the girl bound and sitting on her cot. she told them about it at a social gathering after she had left the school. she no longer works here at center point christian pre-school. leaders here at the school say the girl was not hurt. they are working closely with her family. >> the private family member for them. we want to extend and we continue to extend care and are in dialogue with them. we doing everything we can in that regard. >> school officials say they are horrified this happened and they sent a detailed letter to all parents about what happened and scheduled a meeting with the parents for tuesday night and they plan to close down for five days starting on friday to retrain the staff. church leaders also reported the incident to the department of social services.

hall lane, c.h.p. is still on scene investigateing. >> a woman would pleaded get whys to abandoning her daughter during a supermarket rip-off has been sentenced to 60 days in jail. the 38-year-old admitted to leaving her daughter at a safeway in september after the two were spotted shoplifting, and she later blamed a male companion for leaving the ten-year-old girl behind. in addition to jail she must serve three years of probation and complete classes in theft prevention and parenting. >> the suspect in the aurora, colorado, shooting could enter a plea today. he is accused of killing 12 people in a shooting rampage in july. he is charged with 166 counts including murder and attempted murder. holmes is expected to plead not guilty by reason of insanity. a court document says that holme s was taken from jail to the psychiatric ward of a hospital because he was considered a danger to himself.
