morning. abc7 news reporter, katie marzullo, joins us. >> the vatican is holding a news conference for the last hour and it is going on right now. a spokesman was surprised at how many people came out for the first smoke want. they suspect the numbers will only grow. we will take a look at what everyone is watching, the not wanted chimney in the world is small and yet, it will signal if and when the catholic church has a new leader. so far, we have only seen this, from around 3:40 this morning, black smoke. that means no cardinal received 77 of the 115 votes needed. the vatican spokesman says they did not expect success last night or this morning. >> perfectly normal. do not interpret this as being division among the cardinals.

crews are trying to remove a green pickup that overturned around 2:00 this morning and investigators say the driver died at the scene and three passengers were taken to the hospital with serious injuries. in the south bay a former teacher accused of trying to drug the young children she was hired to take care of is expected in court. abc7 news reporter, cornell bernard, joins us. >> unbelievable story, the preschool teacher is facing child endangerment charges and will be in court later today here in san jose. parents of kids of the preschool are absolutely stunned by the news. police say this woman, 59 -year-old would lives here has worked on-and-off at the academy in morgan for five years but 20 years in child care. authorities believe she spiked a sippy cup of the children that

were one and two. she was fired on-the-spot. >> she was preparing water and the co-worker witnessed her putting something in the water, in the sippy cups. >> i was sick to my stomach. i want to throw up. i am...sad. it is disturbing. >> the owner of the academy said in a statement the safety and welfare of children is the a top priority. our staff have chosen early childhood education because of their love of working with children. we do not know how many children may have been given the pills but all are okay. police have no motive for the crime other than wanting to get kids to go to sleep. we are live in san jose this morning for abc7 news. >> happening now, extra police officers will be at foothill high school this morning after a

violent threat was found on the wall of a girls' bathroom. principal alerted families of graffiti that threatened a mass shooting. he assures cautions were taken to assure student safety and security will be there all week. abc7 news reporter, amy hollyfield, value a live report next half hour. >> police are searching for a bank robber. this surveillance video was released and they hope someone will recognize the man. he gave the bank teller a note yesterday demanding cab. he did not show a weapon. the man spoke with a caribbean accent. the bank robber is described at 30 to 40 years of age and weighing 160 to 175 with black hair and brown eyes. >> a new survey reveals the real reason why americans keep guns in their homes.

>> fremont, palo alto, north bay, all the bay area, this is abc7 news. >> this is the golden gate bridge you can see the headlight s south into san francisco. it is foggy with a lot of bay areas along the shoreline. temperatures by the afternoon hours are above average and warmer than yesterday by three degrees in concord and fremont and san francisco and santa rosa . oakland is five degrees warmer-than-average. we start off with fog but we hit the mid-to-upper 60's by noon away from the coast and near 60 at the coast for the afternoon and low-to-mid 70's dominating bay and inland neighborhoods with hazy sunshine. kristen and eric? >> 6:14. here is a twist on taking your work home with you. new video this morning from new

york shows a house on fire after a truck crashed into it. this house belongs to a firefighter. they were home at the time so, naturally, he went right-to-work to put it out. fellow firefighters responded and knocked it down and the driver of the truck faces d.w.i. charges. >> more americans are keeping guns in their homes for protection rather than hunting. a just-released poll fines that 48 percent of gun owners keep weapons for protection. 32 percent own a firearm for hunting purposes. that is a change from 1999 when washington post/abc news poll found that 26 percent of gun owners kept the gun for protection. back then 49 percent say they used the weapon mostly for hunting. >> rebound is back on -- president obama is back on capitol hill but, first, he talks with george stephanopolis speaking of the negotiations with congressional republicans over how to reach a balanced budget.

school. >> i just spoke with the principal. he points out the let is not directed specifically at a person on campus just to the campus in general. he says he does want families to know that the school is prepared. the principal tells me that he sent out an e-mail last night to parents telling them of the threat and his response. it was written on a girl's bathroom wall and it says a provide length act is carried out tomorrow. extra police will be at campus for the week and he instructed teachers how to talk about this and he says they will check with consulars to see if kids have been feeling depressed or emotional. whoever wrote this, obviously, needs some support he will have a meeting with teachers along with district officials at 8:00 this morning here on campus. there are students staying on twitter they will not come to

school no matter how many police officers are on campus, the priors palisades he would rather have students here at school but says the campus is safe. he cannot force them to come. he hopes someone will come forward with information on who wrote this. he said they can do so anonymous ly. despite all of this, he will try to get a normal day going here, and keep the day on track as soon as he can. >> this morning, parents now know the name of the preschool teacher accused of tying up a toddler who refused to take a nap but are not satisfied with the explanation they get from the school officials. parents drove off after last night's 90-minute meeting with officials at the church in pleasanton. the elders provide add letter from the state revealing the name of the former teacher. she resigned in january. it is now the subject of a police investigation. the incident came to lighted when she showed a photo of the

morning. it is fog, now marine layer clouds. it is so thick this is a dense fog advisory for the coast, the bayshore and the east bay valley with visibility down to eighth of an mile through 9:00 this morning. from mount tamalpais this morning, you can see when we get rid of this we will have a lot of sunshine, temperatures, dress for 48 in oakland, and palo alto at 43 and mill valley at 41. from the east bay hills across 24 toward mound diabolo, santa rosa is 41 and napa and gilroy mid-40's. union city is milder at 47 degrees. today, we will see the fog fade to hazy sunshine and it will be warm throughout the bay area into and through the weekend with the exception the coast and a winter storm for next week with rain here in the bay area and possibly good snow in the

sierra but it is a week away. we will keep an eye on it. the fog this morning, you can notice by 11:00 it has lifted and by noon it is hanging tough out of the coast so you are in the 60's and while we have 70's and 80's around inland neighborhood we will be near 80 in gilroy and los gatos and 75 in san jose. 68 in millbrae and san mateo south, low-to-mid 70's. more sunshine downtown south san francisco and sausalito and mid-to-upper 60's for you and up to the 70's through the north bay valley but the benches beep0 degrees cooler. we could be up to 80 in pleasant done and live more and 79 in brentwood and 78 in walnut creek look for patchy fog tonight and mid-40's to possibly 50 at richmond or san francisco and san jose. the seven-day outlook shows the warmer-than-average temperatures away from the coast all seven
