jesuit. and we're live tonight at santa clara university. we've had the opportunity to talk to two people, both fellow jesuit priests who have known him most of their lives. saying he is a humble man and the fact is he hispanic resonates here in san jose. >> this is the almost the end of the universe. i know the pope. >> he met the future pope in the 1908s. he knew that he was a man of the people with a deep seated concern for the poor. >> it's a poor neighborhood. and he had them deal -- work with the poor they established a chain of schools serving really wandering people from that part of latin america so. he is quietly authentic.

here is the end of a police chase in the east bay hills, it ended with a sheriff's dog biting the suspect. sky 7 over the scene. deputies say she the showed up with a warrant and he took off, running. they chased him. and the dog caught up with him first. >> the fourth bore project is on track to open to traffic later this year. construction just started on the roadway in the tunnel connecting oakland and or yinda. today, abc 7 news got a look

inside of the new tunnel and joins us live from oakland. heather? >> hi, ama. 1937 is a very big year for bay area transportation. that is when the golden gate bridge opened and the first two caldecott tunnels. 2013 is going to be bigger, one for the record books. we have the opening of devil's slide tunnel followed by the opening of the bay bridge by the caldecott fourth floor. but today, elbow grease and shovels were still a preferred method for the work. at the same time, work has just begun on a major milestone, putting in a roadway. this rocky material is the subbase loose, rocky for drainage. layers of material will fill two to three feet reach together shoulder curve and to just below pedestrian walkway

way. lots of sunshine mild conditions continue. overnight looking for fog at the koflt becoming dense in skpaerz push locally across the bay into parts of the east bay and north bay valleys. it will be mild overnight but visibility could be reduced in the morning at 5:00. be on the lookout for that. notice as the day goes on, following a time line, we'll see fog burning away skb back to the coastline we'll be left with high temperatures on the coast upper 50s, 60s 70s around the bay. 70s, maybe no 80s tomorrow. let's start in the south bay. 72 in redwood city. upper 50s on the coast. downtown 65 degrees tomorrow, up in the north bay, mid-70s in many locations. east bay highs 69 in oakland.

state lawmakers hope to make it easier to get into classes at all of california's public colleges a bill would set up a system to complement classroom teaching. a faculty would approve a course list of the 50 most overcrowded classes in the state. students would be then able to take them when full. >> no college student should

be denied the right to complete their education because they could not get a seat on the course they needed in order to graduate. >> he thinks it would take about $10 million to launch the program, paid for with money he says the governor set aside for higher ed technology in his proposed budgite bart's big bike experiment about to shift into gear. bart officials announced they will hold a second pilot program allowing bicycles on trains during hours off limits. this test will go from monday through friday of next week. bikes will be allowed on all bart trains all the time. however, they can't be taken into first three cars during peak commute hours. >> we're going see hue some changes are working. we've been working hard to create more bike space on trains so more space near doors than in august.

army. we're live with more. laura? >> two rape cases dropped against jeremy goulet while he was in the army. you can count barbara boxer, jackie speier and a top official adding voices about how the military handles it's accused sex offenders including jeremy goulet. >> the deputy police chief is asking for more accountability in the way the military punishes sex offenders. >> there is a strong possibility had there been follow through that this individual would have been in custody and would not have had the ability to carry out the crimes. >> detectives butler and baker were gunned down by jeremy goulet, an army veteran with a history of sex offense accusations. after the tragedy it came to light he was twice accused of

rape serving in the army n neither case was he put on trial. he served in the military jail before being granted a less than honorable discharge. >> too many military sex offender goes unpunished. >> how now, others are calling on the military to impose stricter penalties. >> what is it going to take? those capable are capable of other crimes, yes. murder. former defense secretary leon panetta is calling for greater transparency from the military. some say it wasn't just the military in, 2007 a jury convicted him of two misdemeanors but dismissed four fell knees he was charged with for peeping on a woman and firing a gun at the victim's boyfriend. >> it's not just the military

volunteers. >> a judge ruled the parents accused of killing a pimp prostituting their daughter will stand trial for murder. the decision after a preliminary hearing that lasted almost a month. abc 7 news reporter vic lee has the story. 22-year-old calvin snead is a victim. the man reportedly pimping the 17-year-old daughter two of defendants. police say he had just brought the girl back to their home in the bay view on june 3. the next day snead was shot to death in his car. he waited to bring the girl back to los angeles. >> this is a case where people really thought about this carefully. they put a plan together. >> prosecutors had surveillance video staking out another case. they say it shows the father meeting on grove street.

and that the video shows all three men getting into the car. the da says it's damning. >> you can see the weapon and vehicle, leaving. you see the vehicle coming back after the shooting. >> prosecutors will argue three men drove to the bay view and guilton shot and killed snead. >> when ever you have parents that have a minor daughter being pimped and prostituted there is just going to be a lot of emotions but that doesn't necessarily mean it's leading to murder. >> gascone says the defendants have a violent past. >> these people have been involved in criminal activity and in gangs. have prior history of violence. >> defense lawyers say there are plenty of other people who wanted snead dead. police never did recover the gun used in this case. so video will play an
