it happened last night during a practice run at marysville raceway park. witnesses say the driver, a 17-year-old senior at petaluma high school, failed to negotiate a curve going 90 miles an hour, ran offtrack and into pit row. >> we wanted the practice to stop and so a lot of frantically waving to the officials to stop the other cars to get the safety people over there. once that took place it got very silent, eerily silent, and there were immediately people on the scene, bystanders, mainly trying to help the injured. >> a 68-year-old man and a 14-year-old boy died. he was the driver's cousin. they were part of the race crew in the pit area.

>> larry chen was shot in the back of the head. the suspect climbed over him to steal the cash in ashkenaz's cafe. at the same time, the second suspect was stealing the money from edwin baxter's cash drawer at the door. >> the next thing i know my

friend jumped on me. >> he saw a suspect's gun on his friend and intervened. he was shot in the arm. it all reminds baxter of the day ashkenaz's owner was shot and killed in 1996. baxter was working the door that day, as well. >> a little shooken up. traumatized. >> berkeley police arrested one of the two suspects. they found him hiding just a few feet away from ashkenaz. in the meantime the shootings have shaken this entire dance and music community. classes were cancelled, but -- ♪ >> the beat was back. the dance community, the music community is just a lovely -- a lovely place. >> ashkenaz is celebrating its 40th anniversary. >> the people inside are signing a get well soon card for chin and ellis. both men are in stable condition. in berkeley, lisa amin gulezian, abc7 news.

and also some rehearsal time. if a contract isn't negotiated here very soon, that performance could also be affected. in san francisco, abc7 news. princess cruise line passengers are finally on their way to hawaii this morning after a delayed launch from the ship's new home port in san francisco. the grand princess departed from pier 35 about 9:45 last night. that was more than five hours behind schedule. frustrated passengers waited in long lines for hours as the coast guard conducted a last-minute inspection. >> the cruise line had done a really pathetic job of keeping the passengers informed as to what was going on. we've been in line for three hours. >> if this is how we are starting off, what is going to transpire on the cruise itself? >> the grand princess is headed for a two-week cruise to hawaii and mexico. >> yesterday's glitch marks the end of a bad week for the carnival corporation, which runs both princess and carnival cruz

lines. an emergency generator problem tripled the ship in san march -- san martin. it was slowed by a speed problem and technical issues forced the elation to be towed back to port. carnival calls these incidents all minor issues. >> pinole police released a sketch of a man who reportedly tried to abduct 12-year-old girl friday afternoon. police sketched this man who the victim said grab her by the wrist after offering her a ride. it happened as she walked home from school. that was along appian way. he's 19 to 20 years old, six feet tall with a thin build and brown goatee. he has a piercing in his right eyebrow. his car is a silver four door. if you have any information who that might be, you are urged to contact pinole police. it's been more than a year now since a morgan hill teenager who was headed to school and was never seen again. sierra lamar disappeared a year ago. march 16th.

university in pennsylvania is in mourning for a deadly bus crash that claimed the life of a beloved coach. what started off as a normal trip to an away game for the women's lacrosse team, turned deadly. the bus went off the pennsylvania turnpike, slamming into a tree. left front side sheared off. >> went through this grassy area and striking. >> the team's head coach, 30-year-old christina, later died at the hospital. authorities say she was about six months pregnant. her unborn child didn't make it. the bus driver, anthony, died on the scene. 21 of the 23 people on board were injured. victims were admitted to area hospitals. most of them have been released. one person is still in the hospital, listed in satisfactory condition. on the campus of seton hill, shock mixed with grief blankets the school. >> coming together, prayers for

the women's lacrosse team. it shows how close we can be. >> at this point investigators don't know what caused the accident. >> that was john reporting. students and faculty of seton hill will gather at the university tonight for a vigil. this morning nfl free agent. donte stallworth is recovering from severe burns he suffered when the hot-air balloon he was raiding in hit power lines in south florida. they say he will be okay and his injuries won't affect his ability to play next season. it's been quite an eventful year already for former 49er tight end delany walker and it's not always been in the best way. after helping the 49ers reach the super bowl last month, walker learned his aunt and uncle had been killed in new orleans by a person police say was driving drunk. yesterday walker made an appearance in san carlos with the team. he said he will now always be a

already. 47 half moon bay. we will be looking at more sunshine today. enjoy it. the clouds will be on the increase as soon as tomorrow. we are talking about clear and mild conditions to start out for most of you this sunday. st. patrick's day. sunny and breezy this afternoon with rain arriving. the bulk. you will see it tuesday night. some areas may be a little bat for the evening commute on tuesday. a broad northwesterly flows continues with higher pressure off our court and that will allow for breezy winds from time to time. more importantly, we are staying try as high pressure is still in command. eventually it will slide to the east. there's the system cueing up offshore from in the pacific. yet another one that's going to drop down from the north. that will allow a rainmaker to head our way on tuesday. so going through the rest of monday and tuesday, you will notice the cloud cover continuing to thicken and by, say, 5:00 in the afternoon on tuesday comes a little shot of rain in the east bay.

but it will continue on and off throughout the overnight hours on tuesday and wednesday. still we have rain. in fact heavier rain looking for our friends up to the north in sonoma county. that's where we could receive anywhere from about half-inch of rain through the tuesday-wednesday time period. elsewhere today with sunshine and high clouds, we are up in the upper 70s for fresno. upper 60s los angeles and mid-60s in the southern sierra. back home temperatures very similar with lower 60s san francisco, upper 50s to near 06 around our coast. 307 in san jose. here's the look ahead. still mild increase cloud cover tomorrow. then we look for the rain maybe midday tuesday for some. more likely tuesday night into wednesday. then you notice the temperatures rebounding quickly after that system passes us. it's good. we need it. but also maybe you need another great weather resource. we have that for you from abc7. that's live doppler 7hd.

inside a home on 25th avenue. the shooting occurred just before 1:30 this morning. the victims were able to drive themselves to a hospital, but one of them died. the other is said to be in serious condition. california is moving to expend medical coverage under president obama's healthcare reform, but apparently there's a dilemma. not enough doctors to treat the newly insured patients. here's capital correspondent nannette miranda in sacramento to explain.

>> if insurance is extended to millions often the afford angle care act next year, the state won't have enough doctors to treat the influx of patients. this man, also an open tom again open tom terrorist. points to a map that highlights in dollars where the shortage is most severe. only 16 of the 58 counties can meet the federal recommended supply of primary physicians. >> if we are going to mandate every person in this country to buy health insurance, we have to make sure that care is available for them. >> they need professionals in all area. most agree they have more training than they are allowed to as you. nurse practicers would even be able to set up their own practice. >> calibration without patient danger. >> but the proposed shake-up in the medical establishment is ruffling some feathers at the california medical association. doctors have long been the gate keepers of medical care and worry about patients' safety under the plan. >> the concern is that they have adequate training and adequate experience for exactly the kind of patients they are seeing and they are not adequately trained, they may miss something. >> this woman liked being treated by a nurse practicer after her back injury and supports the idea of giving other staff more responsibilities. >> i really, really like them. they were very, you know, just like having a doctor, but they would talk a lot about my pain and i had many epidurals. >> the california medical

association would rather see the state give more money to uc riverside's medical school so it can accept more students and expand the lone repayment program for graduates who take jobs in rural areas. but neither will produce more doctors by january when federal healthcare reform takes effect. in sacramento, nannette miranda, abc7 news. tomorrow former santa clara county supervisor george shirakawa. >> reporter: is expect to plead guilty to lying to investigators. prosecutors say the veteran politicians engaged in a persistent pattern of misusing public money and campaign funds for things like parties, golf outings and gambling. shirakawa was agreed to sign documents admitting to ten

abc's "this week" the republican leader made it clear he intends to hold the line against any new stacks. he tells abcs martha raditz that the key issue is spending. >> when you get down to the bottom line, the president believes that we have to have more taxes from the american people. we aren't going to get very far on that. if the president doesn't believe that there needs to be a balance of the budget over the next ten years, i'm not sure we are going to get very far. and this is the whole issue. we have a spending problem here in washington. it's time to solve the problem. >> house budget committee chairman paul ryan released a budget last week to balance the budget in ten years but a main tenant of the plan calls for repealing the president's affordable care act. here in the bay area the fourth bore project of the caldecott tunnell is going to open to traffic later this year.

construction has just started on road way that connects oakland and orinda. our transportation reporter got a look inside. >> there will be plenty of high-tech features in the new fourth bore, but elbow grease and shovels were still the preferred method for work on a groundwater drainage system. at the same time work has just gun on one major milestone, putting in the roadway. this rocky material is the sub-sub base, lose and rocky for drainage. eventually layers of materials capped with pavement will fill two to three feet from where the surface is now, reaching to the shoulder curb on one side and to just below the pedestrian walkway on the other. when finished, this fourth bore will carry westbound traffic only. >> with the construction of the fourth bore, there will be two tunnels permanently dedicated to eastbound traffic, two tunnels permanently dedicated to westbound traffic that will eliminate the twice a day traffic shifts and the pop-ups. >> the fourth bore has a number of safety features, including

nineteen 200-horsepower jet fans to be hung yet from above. they will help in firefighting and air quality. >> they can actually reverse the direction of airflow. some of the 19 jet fans can direct air in one direction and the other set can direct air in the opposite direction. just depending on where the fire is and what the air quality issues are in the tunnel. >> there will be seven pedestrian crossovers with electronic motion sensor doors. there will be a p.a. system and security cameras. much of the work to complete the tunnel will be the sophisticated behind-the-scenes system. >> the installation of the ventilation systems and the fire systems, the air quality monitoring systems that not only need to be installed, they need to be integrated with the existing systems and with the new operations maintenance building and also tested before the tunnel can open to traffic. >> the new tunnel is on track to come in on budget, which is

$402.1 million. in oakland, abc7 news. new this morning, the california highway patrol plans to step up enforcement today along highway 1 in marin county during the traditional sunday morning ride. the chp said there have been complaints about large groups of motorcyclists and bicyclists not sharing the road along that curvey stretch 2010 damage junction and point raise. officers in aircraft will be looking for riders who will cross over double yellow lines or pass unsafely. they also will be watching for speeders or anyone who runs a stop sign. next month thousands of police statewide will be cracking down on drivers who text or talk on hand-held cell phones. it's been five years since the state first passed distracted driving laws that ban that activity. our media partner, the san jose mercury news, reports more than 425,000 citations were issued to violators statewide last year alone.

radar sweep on top of mount st. helena. we will pick up a few rain drops perhaps tuesday afternoon. sunny out there san francisco. temperatures on the mild side in spots but with some gusty winds around the bay and higher clouds. subtle changes in store for today. 47 in the north bay. 350 hayward, 48 los gatos. another view you can see some of the low clouds and high clouds from mt. tam this morning. the high clouds will be passing by so we will see mostly sunny conditions. 52 san carlos. it's 50 san jose. we are looking at 44 in santa cruz. most areas will be above normal once again today. we will look for more sunshine. a northwest wind. the rain arriving for some in the later afternoon on tuesday. for most tuesday night right on through wednesday morning. so it's a couple of systems coming together in the pacific northwest. but first we still have high

pressure firmly in control. with it off the coast it is allowing for the northwesterly wind. but it will eventually fade to the east. as it does, we will see the increase in high cloud cover tomorrow. then by tuesday these two storms merge. with that that will bring us some rain. going into the day on monday, you will notice we increase the clouds. we will have some sunny periods, as well. but by later on in the day we will be looking at a little bit of that green. in fact, in the east bay and the north bay, perhaps part of your tuesday evening commute will be wet for some of you and then through the overnight hours we could see a little heavier rain up in the north bay. that's where we could see upwards of a half-inch. back home today dry and sunny with temperatures above average in san jose at 70. 69 cupertino. more upper 60s, a few low 70s but upper 50s to near 60 at the coast. breezy, 63 downtown. in the north bay you notice morph the low 70s. the 7 is 11 at sonoma, 69 by the water in vallejo.

near east bay in the mid-60s. a little breezy. today much the same with 66 san leandro. out over the hills maybe a degree or two cooler but overall about a spread of about 69 pleasanton. the accuweather forecast very nice. a little breezy at times. some high clouds. more clouds tomorrow and some rain on tuesday into wednesday. but when the ridge builds behind the next system, it builds strong and we will be even warmer. so it's kind of a little forecast with everything. >> yeah, everything. i know we need the rain but i'm going to love that sunshine. >> yeah. >> thank you, lisa. we are updating breaking news from oakland where police have been involved in a s.w.a.t. team with a shooting suspect. the shooting early this morning left one man dead and another wounded. in the past few moments people retained several people at the scene. this shows some of them being placed in police cars wearing

handcuffs. we are waiting for word from police to update us on just who these people are and whether anyone has been arrested. the shoot owing curd just before 1:30 this morning. the victims were able to drive themselves to the hospital. again, one of them died. the other is said to be in serious condition. switching gears now, coming up next, a st. patrick's day royal tradition. what the dutches of cambridge told an irish guards man about the gender of the royal baby due in just a few months
