rocket fire, kind of small potatoes on a normal day, obviously the president there, not small potatoes, but really a reminder of how far away the two sides are in a peace agreement. >> reporter: absolutely. not just between israelis and the palestinians but between the palestinians themselves. the president this morning is meeting with mahmoud abbas, the president of the palestinian authority, which runs the west bank. hamas, the militant group, runs the gaza strip, so there's an argument to be made as an analyst did to me earlier this morning that this is hamas' way of saying or gaza's way of saying we are here, why aren't you talking about us, why aren't you talking about gazans, why aren't you talking about israel's blockade of gaza, so there is a lot of work to be done to bring them both together but, of course, even more work to be done to get israel and the palestinians back to the negotiating table, let alone finding a final peace agreement. >> you're right. alex marquardt, and that work is just now beginning live from our jerusalem bureau, thank you. and our other main story

this morning. we learned overnight the identities of the seven marines killed in that training exercise. >> the shock of their death made worse by their youth and devin dwyer is joining us from washington with details. devin. >> reporter: that's right. what's so remarkable and horribly sad about the whole story is how young these men were. six of the marines who were killed were in their 20s, all were younger than 26. one of them, as you mentioned earlier, was just 19 years old, and even at those ages, six of the seven men had already served tours of duty in afghanistan. of course, as we reported this week, the men were killed monday night during a live fire training exercise at a military facility in nevada. they were all based at camp lejeune in north carolina. eight of the others involved in the training exercise were injured. the remains of those being killed are now being flown back to their families while the marines investigate just what went wrong. the mother of one of the victims told us, mason vanderwork, could hardly contain herself with grief.

>> he was truly my best friend, not only my son, but my best friend and my hero, and he could never be replaced. >> reporter: now the marines say they've suspended most use of the mortar system that caused the malfunction here and caused the explosion though they will continue to use it in afghanistan. diana and john. >> all right, devin. thank you. heroes to all of us from washington. we appreciate it this morning. and also in washington the house is expected to approve a huge budget today that will keep the government running for the next six months. the senate okayed the spending plan yesterday along party lines. it keeps intact those $85 billion worth of across-the-board cuts, and that means hundreds of thousands of government workers can expect to be furloughed. that cyberattack that paralyzed big banks and tv stations in south korea was traced to a chinese internet address. an initial investigation links it to at least one of the companies shut down by the computer crashes. north korea still the prime suspect. experts say hackers often launch attacks in other countries to hide their identities.

and back here at home two people are dead following a day-long standoff in ft. wayne, indiana. it started when a man pulled a woman off of a city bus and then fatally shot her. he then headed to a nearby house where he held a 3-year-old boy hostage for several hours. eventually a police sniper killed that man, and the child was taken away unharmed. five former council members from the small town of bell, california, have been found guilty of corruption. now, they were convicted of stealing taxpayer money by creating a scheme to boost their part-time pay to nearly $100,000 a year. the former mayor, who was facing trial still, was paid a staggering $800,000 a year in a city where one in four residents lives below the poverty line. and returning for a moment to the president's middle east trip now and a symbolic gesture gone bad. >> yeah, the magnolia tree planted by mr. obama in the israeli president's garden may have been uprooted or may have to be. agriculture officials warnt to

the economy is good but not good enough. the federal reserve sees steady improvement but isn't sure the growth is for real. chairman ben bernanke says the fed will continue its stimulus program to keep long-term interest rates low, but he hinted the fed might cut back if it sees more improvement in the job market. and one area where there is real improvement is the housing market. we're expecting good news this morning about existing home sales. there aren't many of them on the market apparently, and that's creating a sudden increase in demand for new homes taking builders quite by surprise. they're even having trouble finding construction workers. gas prices this morning averaged $3.70. they've been holding there for about a month but many feel they're still too high especially considering the boom we're having in domestic oil production. the oil industry is blaming the federal ethanol requirement, but the ethanol industry says the additive costs less than gasoline, so that's nonsense. the company that makes axe body spray is looking into an allergic reaction.

one pennsylvania school student had to be rushed to the hospital. the student is fine but not yet returned to class. he admits a no fragrance policy for the school would be tough to enforce. major shake-ups are apparently in the works for "the tonight show." patients and did not work in all of those cases. all right, the nation's top pediatrician's group endorsing gay marriage. the academy of american pediatrics say gay and lesbian parents should be allowed to marry because it is in the best interest of the children. the doctor's group reviewed studies for four years before they made that recommendation. critics say it is premature. tiger woods is speaking out about his relationship with skier lindsey vonn and why they decided to go public. earlier this week they posted studio photos and confirmed that they were dating on each other's facebook pages. woods says it's better to do that than for photographers to make money off of them. >> we basically devalued the first photos, and, unfortunately, that's just the way it is in our society right now, and we felt like it was the best thing to do and, you know, very happy about it. >> woods also said issuing the photos is a way of keeping his kids safe and away from paparazzi. tiger woods is learning. >> all right, well, woods plays in a tournament in orlando today.
