this hour. the few cars that come through this early in the morning are just zipping right on through, no one needing to stop to pay cash and certainly no traffic to speak of and no confusion. but this morning's commute could get weird later, it is the first one without human toll takers. since the bridge first opened, and that made for a sentimental scene. look at this video, this was midnight, a vintage packard was the last to pay cash, the same car, notice the unique license plate, crossed the bridge on the day it opened, that was in 1937. also last night workers revealed signs that read "do now stop" and the speed limit, also, has been upped to 25 miles per hour. the last toll taker, marilyn, talked with us after she took the last cash toll after 29 1/2 years, she said she is lucky she is retiring and is doing so comfortably because she got an enhanced separation package.

>> i have feelings of ambivalence, sometimes happy and sometimes sad but this is advanced technology and it is something that is time to occur but i believe people who are replaced by jobs because of advanced technology or automation. they usually are able to reinvent or transform themselves into something even better. >> that is good news for the humans. as for the technology, drivers who now have four ways to pay the toll when you cross the golden gate bridge, a fast track account, you can pay by plate which means registering your license plate and have an account that way, you can make a one time payment online and if you do none those you get a bill. the 28 toll takers that have been laid off are expected to save the bridge district $16 million over the next eight years so it will be a money safer but this morning we will

see if it makes for a confusing commute when the drivers who think they may still need to pay cash slow down if there is trouble but we will be here and let you know how it is going, half hour by half hour. >> we will keep a close eye, thank you so much. >> a new problem on the new eastern span of the bay bridge, caltran and bay area transportation officials will meet to figure out what to do, at least 30 of the giant bolts holding the span have snapped and the chronicle reports that caltran is considering replacing all 288 bolts on the new eastern span, the bolts also known as rods were made in the united states and they measure 2.5" in dam december and run from 9' to 17' long and it is unclear how much it would cost or how long the work will take. the bridge will be safe according to caltran and will open on time on labor day weekend. >> a contra costa county sheriff is recovering after the patrol

car crashed while responding to a call, the car ended up on its side. the crash happened just before midnight on richmond parkway in unincorporated san pedro, hitting the center divide and suffered minor injuries but is expected to be okay. >> happening now, day two in the historic battle for gay rights before the nation's highest court. we will have a live look from outside the u.s. supreme court at 7:00 our time, the justices will take up the federal defense of marriage act known as doma, defining marriage as between a man and a woman. the 1996 law prevents same-sex couples even those legally married in states that allow from collecting federal benefits. today's case involves an 83-year-old woman from new york who was denied the benefits of marriage following a 42-year partnership. >> today's landmark marriage case come as day after the justices considered a california case on whether gays and

lesbians have a fundamental right to marry. the supreme court is expected to issue a ruling in both cases by june. huge crowds rally outside the high court yesterday. inside they had hard-hitting questions for prop 8, and beside the merits, the justices must decide if backers have the right to be in court since the state is not defending the voter-approved ban. >> in the bay area many same-sex couples feel cautiously optimistic about the supreme court taking on same sex marriage. brian and duke are keeping a close eye on what is happening in washington, dc. the couple is getting ready to adopt their first child despite the fact that they cannot legally marry in california right now. >> what i want will probably not happen any time soonestly but -- necessarily. >> it is important for a child to say that "my parents are
