>> in san francisco, protestors stood outside dianne feinstein's office. 100 rallieszv were held across the country today calling for action against gun violence. >> a distracted big rig driver was involved in a deadly crash that killed two people. it shut down interstate 80 most of the day. california patrol says the rig burst into flames after it hit two vehicles crossed over the center divide and hit yet another vehicle. the accident happened around 10:30 in the area of old davis road. abc 7 news joins us live, is the road reopened yet? >> let's show you what's happening now. they're about to reopen the westbound lanes i'm told. you can see they're picking up and driving away right now. caltrans did some preliminary repairs to the asphalt here, damaged in this fire. so they're going to open up for a few hours and get through rush hour until 8:00 they'll come back out to do

more repairs. in the meantime we've learned driver who was involved in this area told chp he was eating just before the accident and with a logs of life, two lives, actually investigators say he could face potential charges for driving while distracted. as shown in this video, the fiery crash happened just after 10:30. accord together chp a big rig was traveling he eastbound near uc davis. it suddenly veered off the road. >> while driving was eating z eating he started choking. he then lost consciousness. the vehicle drifted off the right hand shoulder and veered hard left. the tractor trailer collided with a bmw traveling westbound. upon impact both vehicles burs

td into flames. >> the driver was able to gelt out of the car before becoming engulfed but driver and passenger of the black bmw had no chance and both died at the scene. the interstate closed about three hours. the chp investigated and caltrans worked to repair the guard rai. all eastbound lanes were reopened. chp reminds drivers one doesn't have to be talking or texting to be distracted behind the wheel. >> this unfortunately leads right to distracted driving that. is the reason for the push to drive a vehicle. don't do things in the vehicle you shouldn't be doing. >> i drive to arrive alive. >> this big rig driver says he tries not to eat while driving but the job makes it tough. >> it's hard not to. i mean we can't make no money unless we're moving. so unfortunately we do have top eat while driving. everybody pretty much does

that. >> would you be concerned if they decided to crack down? >> no. i won't be. they'll allow us to stop and take a lunch break. >> and this is a live look here westbound. two vehicles getting ready to reopen all lanes temporarily. and then, caltrans will be back out here at 8:00 tonight to close lanes and do needed repairs. the driver involved in this accident along with several others is being is being treated for moderate injuries and of the chp says he could face vehicular manslaughter charges. they'd have to find a witness who saw him eating before this occurred. in davis abc 7 news. >> thank you very much. another news item with b.highway travel. california law enforcement groups are speaking out in support of state bill 289 setting a zero tolerance standard for drivers under the influence of illegal drugs.

right now the cases are tough to prosecute because no legal standard exists in california. one chp officer killed on the job by a driver high on marijuana. the driver failed all field sobriety tests but was not convicted. >> we had to try to convince the jury that there was a jents but he wo this be 289? the individual would have been found guilty. >> the new bill proposes the same standard all commercial drivers are currently subjected to. >> and california snow pack survey confirms what skiers have known all season. this is a look in tahoe. you can see that it's pretty patchy right there. department of water resources says it's only about 52% of normal. you can see very low with this

early childhood education. nancy pelosi called attention to the severe shortage of child care options in the bay area. leanne? >> well, near california there are 300,000 children on waiting lists to get into a quality center. the president started a destruction. and as soon as president obama turned to the spotlight on child care, women around the nation began a serious dialogue about raising children while trying to thrive in the work place, one of the women was facebook's cheryl sandberg continuing to encourage women to be more ambitious. that received criticism. she told fortune cheryl sandburg is both super human

we've seen showers around. scattered showers in the fblgt for this weekend as this area of low pressure crawls towards coastline. we'll see some changes developing heading into weekend. tonight, 7:00 p.m. clouds around. and maybe a isolated shower or two but it's winding down. but morning sun breaking through. for afternoon, it's going to

people urged to get tested for a host of serious diseases, including hiv, hepatitis. health officials say they may have been exposed by their veteran dentist, a trusted man in their community. how could it happen? abc's david wright has the details. >> reporter: dr. w. scott harrington has been practicing oral surgery for 36 years -- most recently in this tulsa, oklahoma, medical building. but authorities are now concerned that he may have exposed thousands of patients to potentially deadly infections. >> the instruments that came out of the autoclave were horrible. i wouldn't let my nephews play with them out in the dirt. they were horrible. they had rust on them. >> reporter: authorities say letters will be sent tomorrow to 7,000 patients, recommending they be tested immediately for hepatitis b, hepatitis c, and hiv. they started investigating after a patient with no other known risk factors tested positive for hiv and hepatitis c.
