clearly he doesn't hate all things american. other stories overseas, the health of a former south african president, talking about nelson mandela, 94-year-old mandela is at an undisclosed hospital for recurring lung infection said to be conscious and responding positively to the treatment. this is mandela's third hospital stay since last december. south africa's current president is asking for his nation's prayers. i a u.s. army stretch ran is under arrest for fighting along side a militant group. eric harroun bragged about downing a helicopter with a rocket-propelled grenade. he served in the u.s. army and discharged after an accident. he was arrested when he returned to the u.s. and charged with using a weapon of mass destruction. in connecticut they're releasing a chilling list of a young gunman that went on a deadly rampage at sandy hook. this comes on a national day of protest and jim avila has more.

>> reporter: these brutal facts were sealed by the court. gunman adam lanza was not a teenager, he was 20 years old. he fired 154 shots into three newtown classrooms. five search warrants revealed he did not wear a bulletproof vest, only military style clothing. his bushmaster semiautomatic rifle was accessorized with 30-round magazines giving him access to thousands of rounds. at home where lanza lived with his mother, the police search found two nra certificates in the names of nancy and adam lanza even though the nra vehemently denies they were members. nine knives, three swords and a bb gun, a holiday card from his mother containing an uncashed check to buy a new gun and also revealed testimony from an unknown neighbor that lanza spent lots of time in his basement playing violent video games. >> every detail that i hear about that day is painful, so i

prefer to focus less on what was found in the house and the car and more on what we can do to make changes so that this doesn't happen again in the future. >> reporter: new york mayor michael bloomberg releasing $12 million in new tv commercials calling for new gun laws. this time featuring newtown families. and at the white house, an emotional east room. tears and presidential hugs for victims of gun crimes from places like newtown, virginia tech, and chicago. president obama unusually passionate and appearing concerned that momentum for gun reform has stalled on capitol hill. the president promising to keep the pressure on congress to pass background checks and to at least take a vote on the assault weapons ban. the president urging congress not to "get squishy." jim avila, abc news, the white house. today the obama administration takes another step toward cutting air pollution from cars. no rules will be proposed restricting the amount of sulfur allowed in gasoline just as

california already does. the auto industry and environmentalists are in favor. the oil industry opposes it saying it would raise prices like it has in california. several homes on washington state's whidbey island are on the edge after wednesday's catastrophic landslide there. more than 20 of them now either under evacuation orders or inaccessible. geologists say it displaced the equivalent of 40,000 dump truck loads of dirt, likely the largest in washington state history and could be months before residents are allowed back home. pope francis attends two events on this good friday as christians commemorate the crucifixion of jesus. to mark holy thursday francis said a mass at a juvenile prison in which he washed and kissed the feet of 12 young inmates, two of them are females which is a break from current church law. he told them he is at their service. let's take a look at weather. at home mostly clear along the east coast. foggy morning in california and

stock markets are closed for good friday but not before another new trading record. the standard & poor's 500 index hit a new high after gaining six points. the previous high set in october 2007 just before the start of the recession. the s&p is considered a broader picture of the markets than the dow jones industrial average. all right. bank of america still having problems with mortgages. the consumer financial protection bureau, that is, says that the bank accounts for nearly a third of the complaints the bureau receives come from bank of america. bank of america claims nearly all of those complaints have been resolved. many stem from the acquisitions of countrywide, the top mortgage lender, until it went under. young adults finally starting to buy homes, something many put off during the recession. the oldest of these millennials as they are called are now entering their early 30s. survey finds they're not as interested in luxury as they are technology and flexible space. almost half say they'd like to turn living rooms into home theaters. it won't takeof a search to

wet from oklahoma to the interior southeast and expect some fog along california's freeways, wet afternoon commute mmute northwest. in the northwest. if you're flying you're also in luck for the second time this week. no major airport delays due to the weather to report. back to the news, public health investigators in oklahoma are urging 7,000 dental patients to be tested for serious illnesses including hiv and hepatitis. >> that's right. their dentist is under investigation in what may be an extraordinary betrayal of trust. abc's david wright has this story. >> reporter: dr. w. scott harrington has been practicing oral surgery for 36 years most recently in this tulsa, oklahoma, medical building. but authorities are now concerned he may have exposed thousands of his patients to potentially deadly infections. >> the instruments that came out of the autoclave were horrible. i wouldn't let my nephews play with them in the dirt. they were horrible. they had rust on them. >> reporter: authorities say letters will be sent to 7,000 patients recommending they be tested immediately for

hepatitis-b, hepatitis-c and hiv. they started investigating after a patient with no other known risk factors tested positive for hiv and hepatitis-c. an investigation determined his outdated procedures may have increased the risk of cross contamination among his patients. for one thing they say he didn't clean his instruments properly. authorities say he bleached some instruments, which over time can cause them to become porous. some of the equipment was rusty. and authorities say he routinely reused need thes and vials and some of his medications were 20 years past his expiration date. we reached out to dr. harrington, but his office was closed. he did not return calls. while state officials are stressing it is unlikely the infection has spread widely, they want to be sure. the federal centers for disease control are assisting in the investigation. david wright, abc news, los angeles. a man charged with causing an explosion that killed two people and destroyed dozens of

homes in indianapolis is now facing new charges. prosecutors say he offered to pay a hit man to kill a key witness in his case. unfortunately for him he made the offer from a jail house phone even though inmates are told all those calls are recorded. a teacher in virginia says she is shocked that two of her students have admitted to trying to poison her. police say the 13-year-olds confessed to putting hand sanitizer in jane miller's teacups at least twice. miller says she didn't taste it but she presumes that it led to a fever, stomach aches and exhaustion. the students are facing felony attempted poisoning charges. all right, to a man in philadelphia. six months ago, he's being honored for his showing brotherly love. watch this as one man strangely walks right off the subway platform. here it comes then chris konopple swings into action jumping on to the tracks -- >> he didn't think twice. >> he walked off. but the other guy, the good xhar

when i first got back from afghanistan i knew i wanted to be involved in television and film but i didn't know how i would get there so when abc news introduced a mentorship program to me, i was thrilled. >> oh. >> meeting tom hanks was surreal. it made me realize when you're serving your country you don't think about having civilians serve you. >> you are right. live doppler 7 hd not picking up anything in the form of rain drops but we have dense fog in the north bay and santa rosa. napa has dropped to the upper 40's. low 50's, though, for livermore and union difficult and 55 in los gatos. with the coastal forth and areas of fog around the bay, visibility could be reduced to less than quarter of a mile. take your time this afternoon, temperatures will slowly climb through the 60's and it should be a beautiful afternoon with mid-60's from the shoreline to the upper 60's from the inland east bay but the fog comes back tonight another ballgame and holiday weekend ahead. i will let you know when the rain is coming and how long it will last. hopefully, we have friday morning lite commute. >> little, but a bit foggy on the bay bridge.

it look like the 15 and 17 number tolls are shut down so there is a backup westbound along 80. through oakland, we have construction. we are looking at the northbound 80 highway 66, looking at three lanes blocked until 5:00 a.m. >> new overnight a gun battle left one person injured at a san francisco intersection of oak and scott street. police say two vehicles were shooting at each other. one of the cars ended up to front of san francisco general hospital. a man inside the car was taken to the hospital and he was shot in the arm. police are looking for the other involved car. >> three people are in critical condition after a violent head on collision in richmond. at 8:00 on 37th street a car

crashed into a pickup truck. the truck flipped. at left one driver was speeding. a woman was ejected from the sports car and is clinging to life. one of three in the pickup is in critical condition. police are investigating whether speed was a major factor. >> 23-year-old man is accused of robbing the same bang -- bank for a second time in two months. an employee recognized the suspect when he walked in. high is suspected of robbing the same branch in february the he was arrested on highway 101. >> law enforcement agencies have help in alameda testing rape kits that can sit for too long. a rape victim who started a nonprofit organization has donated $500,000 to the county to eliminate the backlog of

untested rain kit -- rape kits and pledging to raise $1 million for, the county has 2,000 untested kits sitting on shelves that will be sent to an independent laboratory for testing. the oakland police department and the sheriff will review the results. >> the east bay drug sniffing dogs return to dublin high schools to discourage students from bringing drugs, alcohol or weapons to campus after cutting them out in 2007 because of budget cuts. but school officials decided to bring the program back. the "contra costa times" reports the first dog began sniffing last week. >> berkeley's world famous chose will not be in business until june the latest word. it has been closed since an early morning fire damaged the stunt on march 8. the owner post add message on the company website state she is confident the restaurant will be ready for customers the first week of june. the building is
