yesterday. showers continue this evening as we drop into the 60s but i want to show you the latest forecast model showing more breaks from the rain through the day. thank you. hundreds of people started this easter sunday gathering at san francisco's highest peak for a sunrise service. we're live on mount davidson with more. >> reporter: good morning, carolyn. that sunrise service here ended just about an hour ago. now we have mount davidson to ourselves. the ceremony was majestic. we're at the canopy of trees and it was at the base of this cross, san francisco's highest peak. it began with bagpipers. take a listen. ♪ hundreds of people, families,

friends, religious and spiritual made the pilgrimage through the woods and rugged terrain to begin their southeast sunday in prayer and celebration. they started coming about 5:00 this morning. the morning's sunrise service was the 91st anniversary of the early morning tradition. for many, it's an annual journey to mount davidson. the area residents and a family from san diego came here to take in the splendor. >> a wonderful time of worship with everyone coming together with other churches to celebrate jesus christ risen, it's amazing. i'm grateful to be here. >> coming here is going to be a great experience because we're close to nature, plus the big lady cross and the service that's happening here. >> reporter: early this morning, look at this, before the sunrise, the mount davidson cross was illuminated by

spotlights and lit last night. it's only lit twice a year. the cross is illuminated on armenian martyr day and easter eve. it was just a really lovely morning here. i wish you could have been with us. as francis said, the rain stayed away. about 300 people came to mount davidson this morning. a nondenominational service, too. something for everyone. >> a quarter million turned out to see pope francis celebrate easter mass and receive his blessing. he greeted the crowd, waving from the popemobile and reaching out to some. alex perez says many of the faithful traveled from south america to see their first latin american pope. >> the crowd filled with people

from around the world, packing st. peter's square this morning. the anticipation and excitement is in the air. mary constable traveled from las vegas. >> i never imagined i would be easter sunday with a new pope. i'm so happy to be part of it. >> reporter: pope francis started the day with a tweet, accept the risen jesus into your life, even if you have been far away. take a small step towards him. he awaits you with open arms. with a solemn entrance, francis begins easter mass as pope. setting a new tone, choosing to wear simple white and shake hands with the public. this is. >> he's the first pope that isn't european and a new vibe is coming into the vatican. so it's a pretty big deal.

>> you could see him walking through the streets. a lot of emotion and even enthusiasm for this. i came here to experience this. >> reporter: the pope ended the celebration with his urbi et orbi address. continuing his style of breaking with tradition, pope francis joined the crowd, waving, blessing babies and he embraced and kissed a disabled child. >> that was alex perez reporting from the vatican. the pope's simple style and ability to connect with the congregation is setting a new tone for the church. the archbishop of new york heard on this week with george stephanopolos and acknowledge american catholics feel disconnected from church. a poll shows 60% shows the church is out of touch with the views of american catholics.

cardinal dough land things the pope can recorrect. >> the biggest challenge is reconnect jesus with his church. people say i don't have a problem with jesus, i have problems with the church. >> cardinal dolan was nervous attending the conclave and electing the pope. each cardinal was to enter the conclave with three nominees in mind. he's not revealing his choices but he's very happy with the selection of francis to lead the church. developing news out of the east bay, an officer-involved shooting in alameda county left the suspect dead. sheriff's deputies pulled over a driver around 9:30 last night at 33 avenue. a passenger was arrested for drug possession. according to authorities.

the driver drove away dragging a deputy. other officers opened fire, hitting the driver several times. his name has not been released. one deputy was shot in the foot and is recovering this morning. new details on a shooting yesterday morning in san francisco. police are searching for the person who shot and killed a college student near bryant and 24th street. the 19-year-old victim was home for spring break visiting family members. abc7's lilian kim has the latest. >> carlos is living a parent's worst nightmare. his 16-year-old son, jacob, was shot and killed in front the their apartment. he heard the gunshots and walked outside to find his son on the ground. >> [ speaking foreign language ] >> it hurts, it -- it hurts. mom and dad hurt. >> the shooting happened just before 3:00 a.m. when jacob was walking home with a friend after a night out.

san francisco police say a man got out of a car, asked jacob if he was in a gang, then shot him several times. a neighbor saw the whole thing from a distance. >> he only went for one person and just let it role. shot him and took off. >> friends and family are shocked saying he wasn't part of a gang and have no idea why anyone would shoot him. >> he wasn't affiliated with gangs. >> jacob was a sophomore at louis and clark college in portland, a wife receiver on the football team and graduate of archbishop high school in france where he graduated with honors. his former pe teacher came to the sight of the shooting to pay his respects. he brought a basketball in jacob's memory. he says, in addition to a star athlete and great student, jacob was a good person. >> he and his little best friend were the ones that would stick

up for kids getting picked on. made sure everybody had enough of whatever. he was a great little guy. >> at this point there's no description of the gunman or the person who drove the car, but neighbors described the vehicle has a gray four-door sedan. anyone with information is urged to call the san francisco police department. a 7-year-old boy visiting an antioch home is recovering after being shot yesterday on william reed drive. nick smith has the details. >> stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries. >> the department is investigating the shooting of a 7-year-old boy. >> at this point it's -- it appears that this is not random. >> the 7-year-old and his family were visitors to this home. >> several shots were fired and unfortunately the 7-year-old child was the person struck.

>> investigators believe the gunman took a position here and fired at unsuspecting crowd gathered below. >> at this point it appears it was -- it was not the intended target. the backyard had several people in it. >> the boy was hit by a single bullet and air listed to children's hospital. this is the most recent spat of gun violence in the neighborhood: last weekend nicholas chavez was gowned down. a memorial stands where he was killed. police say chavez died in a hale of gunfire just after noon. police have not identified suspects in that shooting and wouldn't say if it was gang-related. chavez's murder was antioch's second homicide this year. investigators are working to i.d. the shooters. >> at this time we don't believe they're related. >> police ask anyone with information contact the antioch police department.

new details this morning in a shootout outside a bart station that left a 50-year-old man dead. police say this 18-year-old was arrested for the shooting in january. police say it appears two rival groups ran into each other. words were exchanged, shooting started and the victim was a bystander. a woman was injured. it's been a busy day for frances, first widespread showers, now not so much. >> fewer showers in the forecast so i want to show you that. that means a bit of a break right now so you can see the clouds. we're experiencing showers around the bay area. i'll show you where. if you have outdoor plans, you might be able to get away with it. >> thank you. also, why so many drivers have not gotten the messages about the changes on the golden gate bridge. >> it will cost more to do shopping in parts of the bay

symphony musicians drags on but the music is hitting the right note with fans. ♪ last night an ensemble with strings, brass and wind gave a concert on california street. the musicians have been on strike since march 13 over cuts in wages and benefits. the symphony is financially sound and the cuts would not allow musicians to keep up with the high cost of living in the bay area. this is the end of an era. tommy toy's, a san francisco institution, closed for good last night after 27 years. clint eastwood and frances ford coppola were regulars at the restaurant. it attracted politicians like senator feinstein and mayor willie brown, changing demographics and lease issues

beautiful skies, so enjoy the break. good news for folks doing outdoor plans with easter egg hunts. 56 in san francisco, 57 in san carlos. temperatures on the mild side. blue skies over san owe say. we're seeing a bigger break than we originally expected. napa 56, livermore 57. today, still a possibility of a thunderstorm. more likely in the afternoons. rain and showers expected but i'll show you the timing. that has changed a little bit for the day and into tomorrow. unsettled whether through the week, so more rain on its way. here's a look at pacific satellite image. this area of low pressure still slowly moving inland towards san francisco. it's just falling apart as we show you the forecast model. so lunchtime, a lot of cloud cover. the areas of green showing more spotty scattered showers as opposed to widespread showers.

so even around 1:00, 2:00, the rain hitting parts of the north bay, santa rosa, cloverdale. some of us will be dry. into the afternoon as well. so it looks like rain totals won't be much. the thing that's changed is we thought the rain would taper off into the early morning hours of monday, but now it looks like they'll hang out longer. monday, the commute looks a little bit wetter. the timing of the moisture is more overnight, which is great for us, especially for easter sunday. rain totals, anywhere from a tenth to .75 of an inch in the north and south bay. today, look for highs very comfortable and mild in the upper 60s in the south bay, 63 in santa cruz. san francisco, 62. more mid 60s in the north bay, nevadao 65.

>> i've been there before and you're right, it's breathtaking. thank you. glide memorial church and san francisco tenderloin is celebrating easter with free dinner. the second of three easter sunrise services began 30 minutes ago. another musical celebration in the sanctuary at 11:00. a free fried chicken dinner will be served 11:00 to 2:30. >> 65 people in california will remember this weekend as the time they were pardoned by governor robert phillip brown. among those, a murderer paroled in 1996 after civic 16 years. most of the pardons included people convicted of selling or possessing drugs a spokesperson says everyone receiving pardons has been out of prison more than ten years and hasn't been in trouble since.

38 new police officers fresh out of the camden wil -- academn the streets of oakland. they'll patrolling streets tomorrow with their field training officers. they graduated just last week from oakland's first police academy in nearly 5 years. they've been meeting with community groups and learning about court mandated reforms. a new police academy started last monday with 51 recruits. tomorrow's april 1est. but police aren't fooling when they say they'll crack down on drivers who text or use handheld cell phones. it's an operation supported by federal highway safety dollars, 28% of all crashes each year now involve drivers using cell phones or texting. a study shows adults are more me likely to be distracted than

teens. nearly half of all adults, 49%, text and drive even though they know it's dangerous. the california condor is preserved on the edge of recovery. two decades ago it was nearly extinct but now it's growing. a new threat is emerging. dan ashley shows us the single largest killer of condors and how it can be stopped. >> the california condor, the largest land bird in north america. an adult can weigh 31 pounds, stand 4.5 feet with a wingspan of 10 feet. thousands of these great birds once called california home. but a now banned pesticide, ddt, destroyed condor eggs and the birds almost disappeared. >> the population all-time low is 22 birds in 1982. >> selle sorenson is with the wild life society and they've

been working to return the california condor to the wild. in 2011, the society bought 80 acres to provide a safe home for the condors. the birds come from captive breeding programs at the los angeles and san diego zoos. >> we ready captive-bred condors raised in zoos for the wild. >> reporter: it's a slow process. condors don't lay eggs until they're five. if they live to 25, they may only lay 6 eggs. there are 70 in the reserve and the pinnacle national park. that's out of a total of 404 birds across the southwest. the success is not without challenges. not every bird lives. >> it's hard to lose any bird after spending all this time getting them established in the wild, but especially a breeder. because they live a long time and reproduce slowsly, it's hard on the population to lose an

adult. >> reporter: in november, condor 318 died. the u.s. fish and wildlife department investigated. >> a bird came in with led poisoning and died. it had a 22 round. >> the condor was not shot by the bullet, he ate it. >> that bird died from that effect. >> this is the item that was removed from condor 318. >> in a lab, microbiologist mira finkelstein has been studying effects of lead. >> california condors are exposed to harmful levels of lead annually and half of the condors in california now have lead levels warrant needing hospitalization and treatment. >> led poisoning is the leading cause of death of california condors, caused by ranchers had to who use the bullets to kill animals and hunters.

san jose is winning a battle with texas and other states luring high-tech companies. a reason may be resurgence in manufacturing. business and technology reporter david louie shows us a prime example. >> electronic manufacturing jobs have been on a steady decline, down almost 20% but a turnaround is in the works. besttronics is a contract manufacturing for a variety of companies and based on demand for assembly, they've moved to a facility three times larger.

they plan to go 200 employees. >> more jobs on the horizon. samsung received money to build a headquarters on north 1s 1st street and another is close to taking over the sctc manufacturing complex. san jose's economic director says companies are sold on locating here. >> the biggest incentive to locating in san jose is access to the technical workforce, the best public transportation in the silicon valley region and the many amenities from being part of a big city. >> the resurgence won't be lost on college students. some may shift from developing software to working on advanced manufacturing processes. local companies are recognizing they can keep tabs on quality and speed developmentally manufacturing here. >> each of them is making a

every year. you've got a new theme this year and an unusual title. >> genderation. and, in fact, it has been a generation or even two now when you think back at the beginning of the woman's movement, women becoming more involved in business, and we're going to talk about where we've come from, and where we are going. >> and what are your thoughts on that? because that was many years ago, a couple of decades ago. >> well, you know, for all that we have tried so hard to achieve, we still have a long way to go. if you look at the number of women who are ceos of companies like the coo of facebook and one of our keynote speakers, it's less than 5%. look at the number of women in congress, 20% in the u.s. senate, 18% in the houpts. we're not anywhere near parity yet. so we need to redouble our efforts to see that women have a fair shot. >> now, during the conference, what can we expect to see? i know it's supposed to be
