create a fix for the problem they had with failing bolts or roads on the bay bridge. you're looking at the ongoing construction work. caltrans says they're on track to open labor day. >> abc 7 news joins us live from treasure island a look at what's happening now. >> that is right. now, they have faulty rods or bolts and have to come up with a design a way to shore up an area where hundreds of bolts were installed months ago. >> these things happen. >> this professor at uc berkeley is often a critic of caltrans but today says the problem with replacing bolts or rods should not be a huge concern. >> there is no problem that zrnt a solution. splugs is this. >> cal transsays there is a

solution, this is a piece of one of the 288 bolts or rods in question. some up to 17 feet in length. caltrans spokesperson andrew gordon says replacing bolts won't be a problem but a new engineering design has to be created to shore up a section where bolts can't be removed because they're encased inside of the support pillar. those bolts on the right of the scene. -- screen. >> one option to put a collar around the devices that will do this job, holding these in place. >> that is one of the few options being considered. the cost is about $1 million. caltrans won't know until they start process of designing the collar. 96 of the rods were tightened and later a third found to have failed or snapped. professor stanny believes work to correct the problem will not delay the opening of the bridge. >> this is not a critical task. what happens is while you're doing other things on the

a short time ago. oakland police are still in the preliminary stages of the investigation. initial call is they believe the driver of one vehicle exited and began firing shots at the second vehicle. take a look at this video from sky 7. according to police, the victim vehicle, blue honda you can see on the screen was stopped at intersection of keller avenue and coach drive. police sate driver tried to speed away and hit the median. police are canvassing the neighborhood for witnesses. >> initial call is that it's multiple gunshot wounds. we don't know. koit have been a robbery or road rage. koit have been a drug deal. we just don't know. >> we're frightened and concerned. and are going to do anything
