nicco were talking about wins bringing downed power lines. we go back to abc7 news reporter cornell bernard. >> good morning. the high wins have done a lot of damage in san francisco this morning. look at this. city crews now are scrambling to remove this tree which snapped and fell on portrero avenue between 24th and 25th, the high wins fell on to a house and several cars here. in fact, they pretty much crushed a honda that was parked on the sidewalk, snapped a cable, as well, but buses are still running through here and not affected. also fell on to the house but no damage to the house and no one hurt. across town, a tree has fallen blocking 48th avenue and this

tree we estimate is between 70 and 80' tall and will likely be there for some time. and ocean beach got the full brunt of wind this morning and there is a lot of blowing sand. be very careful out there this morning. at portrero avenue we have a wood chipper and crews are doing a good job removing the tree that fell about 3:00 this morning. the folks inside were not hurt but if you are coming down, if you need portrero avenue to get to work, it is closed, northbound lanes are closed between 24th and 25th. we are live in san francisco this morning for abc7 news.

>> more to keep up with power outages have been a problem for many people with more than 20,000 customers in the dark across the bay area. the most affected area is the peninsula. with nearly 15,000 customers without power, 4,600 are without in san francisco and more than 3,200 in the north bay. 1,100 in the south bay and 850 in the east bay. >> in san francisco, homicide detectives are investigating the death of a man at a residential high-rise in pacific heights, the medical examiner deems the death of the 47-year-old man "suspicious i this is happening on vallejo street. police say they are also looking if a "person of interest" in the case. >> former british prime minister margaret thatcher has died at 87. she served as leader of the conservative party in the 1970's and 80's and called the "iron lady "go her personal and political toughness.

california wine. right now, france has the foothold in the chinese wine market. the governor will follow-up on a conversation he started with the chinese president in los angeles to help financial california's bullet train construction. in the south bay, there is a claim that a district attorney may have committed a serious civil violation and possible crime. the "san jose mercury news" reports an e-mail from a lawyer representing the government attorneys association accuses of lawyer of gigging supervising attorneys extra vacation time off to make up for a pay cut. they can save a portion of pay cut and cash it if later. the maneuver could cost the county the money he was trying to save when it negotiated a pay reduction with the union. he says he has the authority to grant the leave. others say it is a misuse of public funds. >> the trash company that provides service to hows of homes and businesses is vowing a

strike will not prevent garbage pickup. workers voted this week to go on a strike. they refused to stay if they would show up for work. waste management employees picketed after workers walked off the job. a dispute over workplace safety triggered that street. they object to the latest contract offer and the company says east bay customers will still get their trash picked up. >> a just-released poll shows geographic divisions in contra costa county, and our media partner reports that the new poll from oakland-baseed research if the county is going in the right direction. nearly half said yes but people in the san ramon valley portion were more likely to say yes than those in the western part. the new poll is funded by oil

the public eye, now, for at least a decade. her family told us in a statement she suffered a series of strokes and also suffered from dementia but that was chronicled in the recent film "the iron lady" which we remember from last year with meryl streep. it was not a surprise that she was in declining health. great britain has lost an icon and we got word from the queen she was sad upon hearing the news and sends condolences to the family. thank you from washington, dc, on the death of margaret thatcher at 87. >> new details of the death of risk warren's son, the evangelical pastor and his wife are coping with the suicide of their 27-year-old son matthew. warren said he suffered from emotional problems. he posted a message on twitter

faster through the morning hours. we have spring warmth above average for the better part of seven days and that will be mainly dry. with our winds, they gust up faster than 50 miles per hour along the coast and will sand will blow for the better part of the day around 30 to 40 at 7:00 and drop down by noon especially around santa rosa and 23-miles-per-hour gusts and met of us around 30 to 40 around the shore and mid-40's at the coast hanging out there for the better part of the afternoon and the evening and overnight we will see it tapering starting at noon and by tomorrow morning we will be down to around 10- to 15-miles per hour for the bay shore and oakland and san jose but still around 25 to 30 for the rest of us. with gusts tomorrow morning. the low pressure came through overnight and sinking to the south with a lot of wind.

the difference between this high pressure and the low, the distance is small and the pressure differences are high so it brings a tightening gradient. winds are fast in the santa clara valley and we will be in the upper 60's to low 70's. on the peninsula, we will have low-to-mid 60's and los altos hit the upper 60's and upper 50's with the blowing sand along the coast and low-to-mid 60's for downtown and south san francisco and sausalito with mid-to-upper 60's through most of the north bay valley and touching 70 in napa and along the east bay shore, mid-to-upper 60's for you with wind and slower breezes in the east bay valley and mid-to-upper 60's. the seven-day outlook shows in the 50's and 60's along the coast and 60's and 70's along the bay. tomorrow, wednesday and thursday will be the three warmest days in the forecast. have a great day. leyla gulen? >> sounds like we are paying our

dues before we enjoy our beautiful weather. as we look outside we have a look at the bay bridge toll plaza. the metering lights are officially on and we are looking at heavy backups coming away out of the oak. very busy conditions and the sun is rising and it looks like winds are kicking things up. well head down the peninsula along the coast with sand collecting on to highway one between santa cruz and toward half moon bay. as you and see we have light green yellow area so we have high winds that are affecting our traffic. be careful and avoid taking that particular area. as we led back to the east bay, we have debris floating around in lanes eastbound 24 as you come out of the tunnel it is impeding the traffic. >> 6:22. people across the bay area are waking up as we just discussed to downed tries and power outages and we will go live to

there are a lot of dangerous conditions including downed trees, downed power lines. a lot of people are without power. our meteorologist, mike nicco, will have the latest coming up with traffic anchor, leyla gulen. i am kira klapper here for kristen sze. >> the winds could make flying interesting this morning. we saw a container ship coming in on the bay. you could bounce around there, too, right? >> wherever the ground is fairly flat you will find the fastest wind and over the ocean and bay waters with coe have gusts from 50 to 55 miles per hour. let me show you what is going on right now with an idea of what to expect headed through today. gusty to 23 miles per hour in oakland and 22 in san carlos and near 30 miles per hour in mountain view and 30 in napa and concord. at half moon bay there is blowing sand. clouds are linger around the bay

loosens up in concord. a curious thing, sounds like a cable is dangling along eastbound 580 and we will keep our eye on this all morning. >> as mike and leyla gulen were saying if you have not gone out yet be prepared. high wins kick up overnight bringing down trees and power lines. cornell bernard is on damage patrol. what do you have? >> high winds have done a lot of damage across san francisco this morning. crews are scrambling to remove this tree that snapped on portrero avenue between 24th and 25th street. the high winds to blame for it and fell on a house with several cars and crushed a honda parked on the street and snapped a port cable for muni lines.

buses are not affected with no damage to the house and no one hurt inside. across town, a tree has fallen blocking 48th avenue at geary boulevard. the tree will likely be there for some time because it is about 70' tall. it missed an apartment house by 10'. miss have had a tough time keeping up with all of this. >> the garbage cans are all over and a lot of debris and trees and light poles. a dozen trees i know of. >> in ocean beach, the great highway is closed this morning because of the high winds which have blown down a lot of orange traffic markers on the great highway making driving had -- hazardous with a lot of blowing

sand. there is a lot of sand on the highway which is why the highway is closed. on portrero avenue the northbound lanes are closed. if you take this route to work you need to find a detour. it will be closed at least the next 45 minutes according to san francisco police. this tree fell at 3:00 a.m. and they have done a job of clearing it. they have cleared a pathway of folk living in this house because they could not get out because the tree was blocking their front door. a lot of damage here, a lot of very high wind in san francisco this morning. live in san francisco this morning for abc7 news. >> the wind created headaches for people in the east bay in pleasant hill downed trees toppleed vehicles and ripped plants from their pots. in san francisco, homicide

investigators are investigating the death of a man in a residential high-rise in pacific heights. the death has been deemed "suspicious" and police are looking for a "person of interest" in this case. >> we have more breaking news from san francisco, a doughnut shop worker is in the hospital after being shot during a robbery attempt after 3:00 this morning at happy doughnut at sunnydale avenue. the worker was shot managed to stand the suspect. police are looking for a 40 to 45-year-old black male, 5' 6" to 5' 10" up to 200 pounds with a black hoodie. >> new this morning on the peninsula, firefighters are mopping up after an early morning fire torched a home and several cars that broke out in east palo alto near illinois street after 3:00 a.m. five

>> we are back. let me show you the wind gusts. by 7:00 we could get gusts up to 50 miles per hour along the coast and 30 to 44 for the rest of us. at noon, 25 to 35 is the rule for bay and inland and around 40 to 45 at the coast. that is where we will hang out for the afternoon and early evening hours. as we head toward midnight we will be around 25 to 30 at the coast, rather, around the bay and inland and down to 20 miles per hour in san jose. the slowest winds are tomorrow morning at 15- to 25-miles per hour but around 30 at the coast. it will be breezy through 8:00 this evening. >> in the santa cruz mountains a sig-alert is in effect blocking highway 84. c.h.p. has one lane traffic control to affect between skyline boulevard due to down power lines in the area. as we look at the drive in the east bay, southbound 880, we

redwood city you can see where the branch of a tree came down and lit a power line that knocked the power out. a woman heard the noise last night at 1:30. she knew, there goes the power. it is out for 1,900 customers in redwood city. the pg&e worker thinks he can get most power on in ten or 15 minutes but this side will not have power for half the day. that is the best he can do. they are extremely busy. there are problems all over. he received 50 calls he and seven other employees need to respond to. pg&e is very busy. one crew member focused in redwood city and they have been fanned out all over the peninsula. >> concession workers who serve

food at at&t park are getting frustrated over working without a contract and are threatening to strike. "san francisco chronicle" reports the 750 union concession workers have had no contract for three years and are in talks with the south carolina-based employer. but the union here says the weekly talks have been slow going. the union is looking at the giants may home game against the codgers at a strategic time to walk off the job. >> a new report says that airline passenger complains are skyrocketing. researchers say airlines are doing a better job but consumer complaints and the transportation department surged 20 percent. airlines have shifted to larger planes to carry more people and that hasn't been enough to make up for an overall reduction in flights. the bigger things passengers complain about? smaller seat size. overbooked flights. mishandled baggage.
