5:00 am
the suspect one is dead, suspect two is on the run. we have an mbta officer who was seriously wounded and is in surgery right now. we have an m.i.t. security officer who has been killed. there is a massive manhunt under way. a lot of law enforcement involved in that. to assist that, we have suspended all service on the mbta, our public transit service and that will continue until we think it's safe to open all or some of that. we're asking people to shelter in place, in other words, to stay indoors with their doors locked and not to open the door for anyone other than a properly identified law enforcement officer and that applies here in watertown where we are right now, also cambridge, newton,
5:01 am
belmont and at this point, all of boston. all of boston. this is the serious situation. we're taking it seriously, we're asking the public to take it seriously, as well and to assist law enforcement by following those simple instructions. we've got every asset that we can possibly muster on the ground right now. they are doing a terrific job and working in concert with each other but we are going to need the public to help us help them stay safe. >> where are you? >> right behind you. thank you. as the governor said this is a rapidly developing situation. we've received information i communicated to mayor menino. the mayor asked moo he to come here and tell you that the shelter in place recommendation has been extended throughout the city of boston. there's a lot of information coming in. we're working very closely and
5:02 am
examining all databases. all potential leads and there are offices moving around the city right now. please be patient with us, work with us. if you see anything suspicious, let us know, we are trying to make this safe as quickly as possible. but this is an ongoing situation. i want to stress that. this is an ongoing situation. >> colonel timothy albin, first i want to say thank to each and every one of you. i have to ask you to continue to do that. our number one priority right now is with these neighborhoods here in watertown and making them safe and finding this individual. that's what we're committed to. we need more time. we're making significant progress up there but it may take hours to do this so please bear with us. i know there's a lot of questions and we'll have plenty of time to address those after this. but for right now, this is about public safety, this is about the watertown neighborhood. so please give us that leeway.
5:03 am
we'll be back shortly. thank you. >> law enforcement officials in massachusetts right there with an urgent alert. they are asking everyone, everyone in the city of boston and its surrounding suburbs to stay inside. it is an ongoing situation. a fast developing situation according to the police commissioner. i'm here with dan abrams, our "gma" legal analyst. what an extraordinary move right now, the entire town asking everyone in the city of boston to stay iide. can youimagine, american city, now being told that everyone should stay inside. it just shows you how seriously they're taking this. this is not just about a criminal suspect. this is about someone who is a danger to the entire community. and, again, the questions that still need to be answered are so voluminous including are there others out there who he's connected to and i think that's as much of a concern as anything. yes, they want to capture this guy. yes, they want to stop him but they know who he is. it's the unknowns that i think
5:04 am
for law enforcement here which are even more frightening. >> to pierre thomas on that. we heard the police commissioner say that they called mayor menino with this request to have everyone stay inside. >> reporter: george, extraordinary situation. they are confirming what we were telling our viewers a little while ago. that they don't yet know whether this man and his potential brother has support, does he have support? right now probably the investigation is aimed at looking at all of his associates, who knows this man. could there be other people out there. so the threat is not just to the suspect number two. in terms of what he might do and we've seen what they're capable of this morning. the concern is do they have kn til they know that they're aski. i can't think of anyingike this since 9/11 to shut down. stay inside. don't go outside is what police are telling people. >> never heard anything like it.
5:05 am
brian ross on the ground in watertown right now. thousands of police converging on that small town and the other surrounding suburbs of boston. >> reporter: george, i would say not since september 11th of 2001 has it been a sense of powerlessness by the people who live in america that they are at the mercy of unknown terrorists, they've been asked in boston to stay inside, lock their doors, not go out. it's an astounding situation. they haven't really seen in 12 years. >> and, brian, we just heard pierre tell us a few moments ago about one of the killers, the suspect now dead, just walking cooley towards police. do the police have any idea in which direction the suspect number two headed when he was in that mercedes suv? >> reporter: they thought he took off. they thought they had surrounded him in here, but there's been reports since then of spotting him elsewhere and we're just
5:06 am
about -- yeah. and we're about to get another announcement. le -- >> the chief the transit on his office.ent will brief you macllin. he will not take any statements. chief? >> good morning. i just wanted to release the name of the officer who was shot earlier. his name is richard h. donahue, donahue. he's 33 years of age and he abeen a transit police officer for three years. and he's currently at auburn hospital. >> where was he shot? >> we'll update for the latest. thank you. >> reporter: yeah, so this adds, of course, to the great concern as these are men or a man not
5:07 am
afraid to kill children, kill law enforcement officers, based on what we're seeing the message is going out that no one really is safe as long as this man and perhaps his associates are on the street. so, again, it is a sense of fear that pervades here, a real tension with the police, thousands of them, still unable to find this one man. >> and all 625,000 residents in the city of boston have to sy inside right now, s million in the surrounding suburbs are going to stay on to news and we'll return now to abc7 news starts right now with breaking news. >> the breaking news is abc7 news continuing to cover the news on the boston bombings.
