>> they now have a sketch of the man accused of trying to kidnap a two-year-old girl while she played in front of her house yesterday afternoon. the man was walking along snow flake way when he saw the girl driveway. he grabbed her and then took off running in this direction. the legislation girlmother screamed which started chasing him and he dropped the toddler. the suspect rap away but may have been driving a mid-90s maroon or burgandy explorer or similar size sports utility vehicle. >> it's scary to think that close somebody would do something like that. >> police canvassed the area immediately after the attempted kidnapping, and brought in specially trained dogs that can patrols patrols in thecent, and enabled -- neighborhood continues. >> it's tragic, we don't need that in our neighborhoods.

>> alameda county sheriff's deputies checking out a call shot four pit bulls when they began attacking a sheriff k-9. happened today near the hayward city line. who of the pit bulls died instantly. a third dog was shot in the paw and survived. the fourth dog was put down by deputies at the request of the dog0s roper, officers were looking for a drug and car theft suspect when the pit bulls charged. a neighbor said deputies could have respond differently. >> sloppy. and watching it, it was sloppy. pow, pow, pow. i couldn't believe what i was seeing, they were shooting dogs and having to watch the dogs die right there and then the one suffer. that was the worst part. >> deputies say they had no choice but to shoot the pit bulls when they began attacking their k-9. >> coast guard officials say an engine leak led to a boat fire that sent one man to the hospital.

the boat caught fire off candlestick point. you can see three men on the in. all four were rescued safety. the engyp was leaking gas when the owner tried to fire it up. >> i heard this zap, poof, and then flames. flames were too big for us to handle at that point. >> ama: our news camera hitched a right with the san francisco police to see the boat. it is a loss. three men were treated and a fourth was briefpitalized hospitalized for smoke inhalation and then releast. >> tonight a san francisco man is back in the united states after he and his sister nearly drowned. ben and kate's story is truly miraculous. they spent 14 hours swimming toward land after their fishing boat sank. in their first interview both described the grueling ordeal. >> very surreal. watching the boat turn down, and go underwater.

sunday afternoon and then 90s will return to much of the bay area tuesday, wednesday, and thursday of next week. lows with that -- low cloudiness and fog moving further inlan overnight. low 50s to mid-to-upper 40s across much of the bay area, and high pressure starting to build in. this is going to be our main weather feature for the next few days. going to keep the storm cut to the north. we have a little area of low pressure. this is just going to come up and over ridge of high pressure by tuesday and wednesday, and that may cool down temperatures one or two degrees. that's about it. it will set the stage for warm offshore winds to develop by tuesday night and wednesday and that's going to mean warmer temperatures near the coast. at least for tomorrow, look for warmer temperatures inland. still look for a little patchy fog at the coast but i think it will burn off sooner so have moon bay should experience temperatures a few degrees warmer. this is 8:00 tomorrow morning.

>> ama: a series of car burglaries across california have stumped police. michael finney jumped in and began investigating. >> some thought this was a brand new crime, and a crime isolated in southern california.

but my investigation found it's not. it isn't even what it appears to be. these cars aren't only being burglarized. they are being hacked. this surveillance camera video shows who car burglaries underway. on the right the thief presses a button on some sort of hand-held device, the dome light comes on, the alarm is silenced and the door unlocks. now the car to the left. another criminal, another hand-held device, another burglary. >> we long beach police department has reached out to numerous organizations, international organizations. they don't know what it is. >> why? this isn't supposed to be possible. modern car security systems are equipped with rolling codes similar to those used on garage doors. everytime the key fob button is pressed, a new code is set. so, even if a criminal, with sophisticated scanning equipment, detects and steals the code, it does them no good

because the code changes with every push of the button. >> shown this video to experts in the field. and everybody right now is -- they don't know what it is. >> it is this hand-held device. the crime, i find, has been seen internationally. this netherlands based security web site discusses rolly codes being thwarted. but on this site no one knows how. a search news abc news archives finds of similar incidents in chicago in august 2012. michael shen's home surveillance system catches the thief in action. >> he walks by the car, the dome light goes on. >> the bay area is not immune to this type of crime. a similar series of car burglaries were reported in oakland in early 2011. a couple of months later another series of burglaries of this time in palo alto.

so, the southern california burglaries are not the first. but they are the most notorious. >> in long beach, they're stuck. they have no idea what is going on. here in san francisco's mission district? they do. >> cars are mobile computer networks now. engine talks to yours to talks to your dashboard, talks to the rear lights in the back. everything is a huge network. eight has gone high-tech, including your vehicles. >> were these cars hacked? >> well in a literal term, yes. the cars were hacked. >> professional hacker and automobile trip knew says separating the cars that were hacked from those that weren't will allow me to figure out which locks have the vulnerability. >> jeeps, mazdas, one was a bmw. and the victims, when we talked to them, told us they were positive they locked their car

do urilnce video of the long beach thieves showed they were unable to unlock a ford escape and cadillac. so we asked automakers for the names of the company that provide their locks. they won't tell us. they insist the ball is in their court. >> the vehicle manufacturers can figure this out. it's like, they're going the at all the cars that did get broken into versus the one that didn't and say say, what's the piece of hardware in common? this is the thing they broke. >> i believe i found the supplier of the locks that have been hacked but without cooperation of the car manufacturers i cannot be certain so i'm passing this report along to long beach police and i'll let them take it from here. now, the takeaway for you is to never leave anything of value in your car until this is solved. these thieves weren't looking through car windows for items. they were simply opening the doors that unlocked. i'm michael finney, seven on your side.
