>> good morning, everyone. i'm carolyn tyler. let's start with a quick first look at the weather with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> good morning. >> we are on our way to a much warmer day. around the bay, mid-to upper 10s around oakland and berkeley, castro valley. along the coast, stinson beach mid-and upper 60s. the inland east bay, low to mid-80s to near 90s.

that's the beginning of a heat wave coming our way. we could see a few records for the week ahead coming up midweek but i'll let you know about your forecast numbers today and all week long. that's coming up in a few minutes. carolyn. >> lisa, thank you. there is a major new development in the boston bombing investigation. russian authorities intercepted troubling phone conversations between one of the suspects and his mother two years ago. but u.s. officials weren't told until after it was too late. we go the latest now from abc news reporter gio in boston. >> overnight abc news learning the recorded phone conversation between tamerlan tsarnaev and his mom in 2011 worried the russians so much they asked the u.s. to investigate tamerlan. u.s. officials said they learned of the wiretap within the last week. >> these take place of potentially important if there's more to them than what has been publicly released. >> it's critical new information as investigators try to piece

together the life of the now dead tamerlan and his younger brother, dzhokhar. while they don't know if the officials were able to find tamerlan's laptop in a landfill we were told they found his cell phone in a nearby apartment. who is the mysterious man named misha that influenced tamerlan or may have radicalized im? his mom calls him a friend. >> a friend, like a real, the one he could share his life with. >> reports say investigators may have identified misha but it's not clear if there's any connection to the boston bombing. on the streets of boston things are going back to normal for people and businesses. >> people walking by smiling, looking at the flowers you have just planted. what's that like for you? >> it gives you goosebumps. >> and what would have been little 8-year-old's martin

richards first little league game of the season, people woreger sis with his name to remember the youngest victim. >> while things appear to be going back to normal here in boston on boylston street. still we don't know what was said in that conversation or why the russian even recorded that phone call in the first place. gio benitez, boston. happening now, the bay area continues to support the 11-year-old from martinez who was injured in the bombings. aaron hern is recovering, and donations are helping his family get back on track financially. abc7 news reporter kira klapper joins us live from martinez. kira, a fun run is going to be happening later this morning? >> that's right, a fun run fundraiseler start about an hour and a half from now at alhambra high school in martinez. a family friend who put together the event said 500 people

already rsvps for it. they are hoping more people will come. anyone who comes can run or walk alone or with a team. it's ten dollars a person to enter, five dollars for teens and you get a deal if you bringing a big group. all the money will go to helping the hern family with their unexpected and expensive medical expenses their son was near the finish line waiting for his mom to cross when the second bomb hit and sending shrapnel into his legs. he has taken his first steps. he is undergoing treatment for the severe wounds he had. but that is a testament to their strength as a hole. >> so strong, so driven. katheryn qualified from boston from her first marathon she had ever run. when they have a goal, they will find t they are a strong family

and they will work together to get through this, and i'm hoping what we do as a community helps them through that, as well. >> this is the latest of several fundraisers to help the hern family. many shops and restaurants have already donated a percentage of their sales to help the family. the fundraiser starts at 9:45 at the upper track at alhambra high school. the event officially starts at 10:40. that's when the biggest group of runners started running in the boston marathon. they will also do a moment of silence at 2:50 when the bombs went off f you can't make it, if you would like to support the hern family, you can find more information on our website, abc7news.com, and look under "see it on tv." kira klapper, abc7 news. >> nice to see aaron doing so well. thank you, kira. a manhunt continues in the sierra foothills east of stockton for a man who broke into a home and stabbed a 9-year-old girl. she died of her injuries at the hospital. the girl was at home in valley

springs with her 12-year-old brother. the parents were nearby but the children were home alone. a boy saw a man in the house. they called his parents, and they called 11 but the intruder left before any adults could get there. there has been a massive search launched for the suspect and they have been talking to several witnesses. >> state and federal place agencies have been called in to help in the ongoing hunt for the girls killer. >> alameda county sheriffs deputies check out a call in shot four pit bulls close to the hayward city line. two of the the pit bulls died in be stanley. a third was shot in the paw and survived. the fourth was later put down by

deputies they say at the request of the dog's owner. they say they were look fog for a drug and car theft suspect at the house when the pit bulls charged. neighbors say they could have responded differently. >> slopty. >> sloppy. i just think it was sloppy and watching it it was sloppy. pow, pow, pow. i couldn't believe what i was seeing, the way they were shooting the dogs and watching them die there and the one suffer. that was the worst part. >> deputies say they had no choice but to shoot the pit bulls when they began attacking their k-9. >> coming up next, apple picking. how officials are cracking down on the black market for stolen i-phones and ipads. >> i look in the mirror or and i have to admit i'm not the strapping young muslim socialist i used to be. >> the president showing off his lighter side. a look inside

accuweather forecast. thanks for joining us this morning. >> san francisco is one of the cities where smartphone thefts are happening. they are talking about ways to fight the crime. if you are a victim, don't even think about chasing down the thief who just ran off with all your personal information, pictures and videos. >> a number of victims are being subjected to a robbery. often they getting hurt physically. they are almost always getting hurt emotionally. >> police are now cracking down on overseas black markets where stolen smartphones can fetch as much as $1,000. in new york and chicago undercover cops even pose at smartphones selltories arrest buyers who take the bait. giving new meaning to the term

"buyer beware." today is the day some 400,000 unemployed california workers have been dreading. their unemployment gets cut we 18% starting today. it's due to the spending cuts that congress allowed to automatically kick in to reduce the deficit. state employment development department sent out notices earlier this month to people receiving unemployment checks, telling them the state will be getting $250 million less from the federal government. the average unemployed worker will now lose $52 per week in benefits. >> the federal spending cuts had caused flight delays because the faa air controllers were furloughed. that will end. this after congress passed an emergency bill last week to stop the staffing cuts. if you saw a bit of last night's correspondence dinner you might still be chuckling this morning.

annual event brings together stars, politicians and journalists for what's called the prom for nerds. we have some of the highlights. >> it's unbelievable. i have 99 problems and now jay-z is one of them. >> president obama got to deliver jokes and jabs at some of the people and issues of that rubbed him the wrong way, including that imfamous comment about california attorney general camilla harris. >> out in california, a fundraiser, having a nice time and i happened to mention camilla harris is the best looking attorney general in the country. as you might imagine, i got in trouble when i got back home. [laughter] who knew eric holder was so sensitive! >> i recognize this job can take a toll on you. i understand second term you need a burst of new energy, try some new things, and then my team and i talked about it. we were willing to try anything so we borrowed one of michelle's tricks. >> it wasn't just the capitol hill crowd who attended the annual affair. that's san francisco mayor ed lee right there. he's back east making good on a super bowl bet with baltimore, and it appears he decided to make a stop in dc to hear what this year's host, conan o'brien, had to say. >> it's amazing to think how much our country has changed in 18 years. think about it. if in 1995 you told me wield that in 2012 we an african-american president with the middle name hussein who was just re-elected to a second term in a sluggish economy, i would have said, oh, he must have run against mitt romney. >> happening now, severe weather warnings are in place for huston through tonight after the texas city got pounded overnight with 3 to 7 inches of rain. some lakes and bayous are spilling over their banks. strong storms yesterday caused flooding that shut down a major huston tollway to the airport. fortunately that artery has since reopened. yesterday the fire department helped dozens of cars that got stuck in that flooding. nothing like that here. this is now a 96-year tradition. opening day on the bay. a day celebrating boating season. more than 100 yacht clubs get together every year for the festivities. there will be a parade on the bay from noon to three with over 120 historic vessels, classic and contemporary boats. there should be great picture taking opportunities as anything that floats is likely to be out there on the bay today. and the 150 year tradition sell are brace the port of

san francisco. it's contributions to the city's past, present and future, there's a big 150 birthday bash at pier 39 starting at 11:00 this morning and tonight at six there will be a gala reception at the historic ferry building. and not to be overlooked, the oakland yacht club is celebrating 100 years today, making it one of the oldest yacht clubs in the bay area. so many things going on today. there's a bike ride also. and good weather. >> yeah, the winds are backing up. sometimes we get in the wind tunnel. not a great idea. today, though, temperatures will be above normal in san francisco. yesterday it was below normal. afternoon highs in the cities should be about 64. yesterday you didn't manage that. today going for a high of 71. santa rosa should be 71. so start out the week with temperatures well above normal. now yesterday we had some areas in the 80s. here's a look from mt. tam and a little fog left over. richardson bay, also in napa.

it's quickly evaporating. with the sun we are warming up. 56 in oakland. most of these neighborhoods, five to seven degrees warmer this time than yesterday. 53 downtown and 53 santa cruz. in the south bay, nice and sunny. you will climb another 30 degrees or so. so senior farm numbers today in san jose. los gatos 54. 56 in santa rosa. really all of these neighborhoods will be in the 80s. close to 90s in some spots today. big jump. we will hold on to that warmth. here's a look at livermore for the week ahead in a moment. but right now earlier clearing, obviously we aren't seeing much fog out there. sunny and warm we're the warmest days of the week in some neighborhoods wednesday and thursday. right through the middle of the week in livermore you will notice that we've got the 90s on thursday. still holding on to the 90s on friday. today and tomorrow not much change. upper 80s to near 90. and the cooling trend not until the end of next weekend. so a prolonged area of warmth,

and this bubble of high pressure over us, allowing for the sea breeze to just be confined in the coast. look at all the 80s in the south bay. 82 s it above your averag peninsula a big warmup for menlo park to redwood city. look at the coast. some of the cooler temperatures still pleasant from pacifica to the sunset district. low 60s south city. still airport delays but it's not due to the weather. in the north bay numbers ranging from the mid-70s sausalito. so right by the water it will be mild. take a look at stinson, bodega bay. not often in the upper 60s. and mid-80s calistoga. east bay, pleasant in berkeley to oakland. but here low 80s. over the else we could see 90s here. 84 pleasanton, 88 antioch f you are headed to oakland, a very

>> tonight the warriors will try to take a commanding three games to one lead in their playoff series against denver. friday night the warriors held on for 110 to 108 victory over the nuggets with steph curry leading the way even though he had the sprained ankle. tipoff 6:30 tonight. a's are playing next door at the coliseum, so warriors fans should expect extra traffic and congestion because the a's game should be ending just as warriors fans arrive.
