an eight-year-old murdered victim is remembered. a town came together to pray for the girl, her family and for the capture of her killer. good evening. i'm dan ashley. >> i'm carolyn johnson. leila fowler was stabbed to death in her home in valley springs east of stockton in calaveras county. tonight we hear from her heart broken family. john alston is live in valley springs for us. john? >> carolyn, more than a thousand people showed up here , 10 bus loads of people and others found other ways to arrive. the family of leila fowler was here and just about everywhere they turned they were met with hugs. leila fowler's family turned to each other for support and they felt the embrace of a thousand community members who turned out to celebrate the life of the eight-year-old girl. her older brother, justin, was the first family member to speak. >> i am not saying goodbye to leila. i will stacey you later.

i will say see you later. >> throughout the ceremony he comforted his 12-year-old brother, the one who was home on saturday and first reported the attack sistst his sister. leila's mother mustered the strength to speak briefly. >> i wanted to thank the community and our family and friends for the overwhelming amount of support they have given our family. it will never be forgotten. thank you. >> the crowd wore purple and pink, filling the courtyard of jennie lind elementary school where she was a third grader. after a ceremonial balloon released the girl's teacher and principal talked about how she brightened the whole school. >> leila was very smart. leila loved monkeys and wolves, earth and especially songs. >> it does not happen to a person you know much less a child you know. this cannot happen to a child in your very own class. >> the family home in valley

springs is a crime scene after the saturday stabbing. her 12-year-old brother says a man broke in and then ran off after the attack. the whole area has not been able to rest easy. >> we are a stropping community. we -- strong community, and we will get through it. we will be learning how because this is a first for us. >> counselors have been working with students here. students have been talking about the case and one 6th grader says they all agree and they have been saying that leila is in a better place. abc7 news. >> thank you. investigators are investigating whether this man is involved in someway in fowler's murder. police arrested him for trying to kidnap a 15-month-old child in placerville this morning. investigators say he forced his way into an apartment and tried to snatch the girl out of her mother's arms. she was able to fight him off. his dna is being tested to see if there is a match to fowler's killer. the calaveras county sheriff has said that he doubts that the man is involved, but they

need to follow-up on the lead. there is a high fire danger in parts of the bay area tonight. >> cal fire issued a red flag rn whatting because of windy -- flag warning because of the windy conditions. it will last through 6:00 p.m. tomorrow. >> firefighters posted signs warning against barbecues in affected parks. and now checking in with sandhya patel and live doppler 7hd. >> carolyn and dan, the winds are really starting to pick up. gusting 40 to 50 miles an hour. let's check out doppler 7hd. you will see clear skies across the entire bay area, and we have the wind advisory for the north bay mountains and east bay hills de -- diablo range. this is running until 11:00 a.m. wednesday. gusts in the range of 50 to 60 miles an hour with the low humidity creating the high fire danger. red flag warpings and the same area until wednesday at 6:00 p.m. we have the record dry fuels. we haven't had a lot of rain, so the fire season is coming early.

you can see how bouncy the camera is. wind gusts are 26 to 47 miles an hour in knoxville creek. mount diablo gusting to 51 miles an hour and other east by hill locations you can see 30 to 43 mile an hour wind gusts. we will have to hang on tight. these winds will be driving the temperatures up. i will be back to show you how hot in a few minutes. carolyn? >> we will see you shortly. firecrews in martinez quickly attacked a fire that was closing in on a church and grocery store. it spread across a quarter acre before the crews put it out. they got a handle on it because the winds were light in the area at the time. and just north of vacaville, moderate winds fueled a wildfire there. sky 7hd saw them on a charred backyard. the firefighters contained it before any buildings were damaged. we have news about what will happen to the dead boston bombing suspect. tamerlan tsarnaev's wife

cleared it to be released from the medical examiner. tamerlan's uncle says he will claim the body, but has not said where he will bury it. they are looking into tamerlan's terror connection. he met with a known terrorist recruiter in chechnya in one of his recent visits there befrn and fellow boxer who died fighting with chechen rebels against russian troops last year. meantime, one of the youngest victims of the bombing is back in the bay area. aaron hern who turns 12 tomorrow is back in martinez tonight. lisa amin gulezian is there and everyone is so glad he is back. >> that is true. aaron is a third generation 4* from martinez. and they str truly rallied -- they have truly rallied around the family. to say the city of martinez was happy to have the hern family home tonight would be an understatement. they arrived from boston just

today. >> they are tired. it isely absolutely gracious for all of the support they have gotten, but they need to rest. they want to keep it low key. >> it has been a whirlwind. aaron was in a crowd of people cheering on his mom who was running the marathon when the bombs went off. the 11-year-old was hit in the leg. he underwent two surming res in boston -- surgeries in boston. >> it is great to see he is back and helped in his way. >> the road to recovery is a long one. he has nearly 100 staples in his leg. his baseball coach knows he will bounce back. >> him being an athlete knows that there is nothing like being in your own bed. and being with family and friends again i'm sure that is great for him. >> it is not clear when he will return to classes at martinez junior high school. but this family is in the community's thoughts.

take a look at this wild video from los angeles. the driver of the stolen white van leads police on an intense chase on freeways and city streets and sometimes going the wrong way altogether. he hit several cars and two police cars. it took off running like this. he sliped on some wet cement and there he goes down in a minute. the police pounce on him.

the cops jump on him and swoop in for the big arrest over a stolen van. investigators say those in union city think they know why racist graffiti is around town. we sent alan wang to look into it and he is there live with more. alan? >> carolyn, investigators think this stems from a controversy surrounding the renaming of a local middle school. this sign is all cleaned up, but let me show you what it and two other ocations looked like. the messages written over the weekend are similar at all three locations. they use an explative aimed at filipinos as seen on the side of the building owned by the filipino community center. >> this racist thing shouldn't be a part of our lives anymore. we are in america living as americans. >> a filipino restaurant across the street was tagged as well as the office of the filipino advocates for justice. they are treating it as a hate crime. >> we have a different take on

it. we see it as a message that we need to do quite a bit more community building. >> police believe the initials ams stand for alvarado middle school, and it stems from the controversial renaming of the school in honor of two filipino-american farm workers. >> they were the ones. they worked with caesar chavez councilme city councilmember points out the irony in the word mexico or mex used to cross out the word filipino. she says they merged their union with caesar chavez and other mexican farm workers to form the united farm workers union. >> and then seizure -- caesar chavez was a more well known united farm worker leader. >> and that's why renaming the middle school is so important to so many filipino-americans here. the search for a suspect in this hate crime investigation

administration announced that customers will no longer have to ask a pharmacist for the plan b morning after pill. it can be sold over the counter. the fda also lowered the purchase age. but buyers of the emergency contraception will have to show proof of their age. mcdonalds has pulled an ad from east coast billboards. it shows a depressed woman and says "you are not alone." million love the big mac. some say the billboards mo the ads. mcdonalds apologized and said it was not properly approved. the advertising firm that ran the ad said it was an unintended error. >> as the temperatures climb out there so does the risk of fire. >> and that will continue for a little while longer. meteorologist sandhya patel is here with live doppler 7hd. >> the high fire danger is remaining in affect. you can see the skies are clear across the entire bay area from the high definition

sue trough camera. you can see the bouncy camera and it is 59 in san francisco and 63 in san jose. as we check out other locations this is the port of oakland. you can see it is sparkling tonight and clear skies. santa rosa, it is warm right now. 73 degrees and napa 74 and fairfield 75. we are hanging on to some of the daytime warmth. it is the wind direction that is keeping us warm. the temperatures fell upper 50s to the upper 80s this afternoon. here is what is coming, clear tonight and windy in the hills. a high fire danger. the highs are wednesday and thursday and tomorrow we are only expecting one or two record highs, but thursday we can see more. here is the area of respect that is building in quickly behind the area of low pressure, and that's why we are seeing the dry and gusty winds. this is going to remain in the gusty mode for at least the early morning hours before we see the winds taper. right now we are looking at 11 uke p.m. winds are strongest around

faff field and napa. around 40, 50 miles an hour certainly possible in the overnight hours. at 5:00 a.m. when you head out the door fairfield will be gusty. if your travels take you through the area, 44 miles an hour at 5:00 a.m. 38 mile an hour wind gusts around napa. 34 around point reyes. thehe atmosphere. the hilltop winds are in the 40 to 50 mile an hour range. the humidity is 8 to 10%. that's how dry it is getting. winds by 3:00 p.m. are dropping off under 30 miles an hour across the entire bay area. especially the higher terrain in the fairfield area. tomorrow morning a wide variety of morning temperatures and you can see mostly 50s, but we will see some 60s around antioch, fairfield, upper 40s around half moon bay and santa cruz and morgan hill. you will need to hang on tight. 87 in santa clara for the south bay. 72 santa cruz. redwood city, palo alto, half moon bay 70 degrees.
