good morning. we begin with something of a price tag stemming from the boston marathon bombing. >> a new estimate this morning says the attack did over $300 million in damage to the boston economy. that's when lost wages, retail sales and damage to infrastructure are taken into account. >> and there's also news on the investigation. for that we're joined from washington by abc's devin dwyer. good morning, devin. >> reporter: good morning, diana and john. authorities believe they've now identified a turning point when tamerlan tsarnaev, an american resident, allegedly became radicalized. this russian mosque, a known gathering spot for extremists, is the new focus of the bombing investigation. it's there u.s. officials believe that tamerlan tsarnaev met with this man, mansur nidal, a known chechen terror recruiter killed last year by russian authorities. >> my name is tamerlan tsarnaev. >> reporter: this video obtained by "entertainment tonight" is the first time we heard tamerlan's voice. the young american boxer who authorities now say had internet contact with william plotnikov,

the boxer in red, a canadian man who moved to russia and joined a terror group. the alleged connections offer new clues about what may have inspired him on a trip to russia last year. u.s. intelligence officials are now investigating how warning signs may have been missed. >> we want to leave no stone unturned. we want to see is there, in fact, additional protocols and procedures that could be put in place, and we won't know that until that review is completed. >> reporter: meanwhile, the hunt for possible accomplices continues. abc news has learned authorities identified almost a dozen persons of interest including tamerlan's widow, catherine russell, who has submitted dna samples to the fbi. tamerlan tsarnaev's body still remains in that boston morgue. an attorney for his widow says she's given permission to the tsarnaev family to claim the body for burial.

john. >> devin dwyer in washington, thank you. one final note about the boston bombings, the father of a wrongly accused teenager is considering a lawsuit against the new york tabloid stemming from the "new york post's" headline bagmen in the days after the attack. the father of the young men targeted by the article now may sue the paper. he claims his son is suffering trauma after appearing in that photo. after showing off his chops at the white house correspondents' dinner, president obama is back to serious business. in a wide-ranging news conference, the president said until there is, quote, hard, effective evidence that syria used chemical weapons against its citizens, he will not consider military action. the president also addressed guantanamo bay vowing to renew his push to close the detention facility. he also expressed concern about the dozens of terror suspects held there who are engaged in a hunger strike. investigators in mississippi say the man accused of sending ricin-laced letters to top officials ordered caster beans on ebay. ricin is derived from those beans. james everett dutschke is being held without bond in this case. officials say they found traces of ricin on a

dust mask that dut ki threw in a dumpster and in a martial arts studio he used to own. well, it's may 1st, and authorities in seattle are gearing up hoping to avoid a repeat of the violence during last year's may day march. there will be demonstrations there, as well as in los angeles where some 30,000 people are expected to call for immigration reform. here in new york the occupy wall street movement has a full day of protests scheduled. venezuela's post-election tensions erupted into a brawl in the national assembly overnight. at least one lawmaker was left badly bruised and bleeding. the punches started being thrown when opposition members unfurled a banner. there's been bad blood ever since the new president achieved a narrow victory last month. in her first television interview, amanda knox tells diane sawyer she only recently learned how she was being portrayed in the media, and as she faced charges for murdering her roommate,

she-devil, seductress, sphinx of perugia are only a few of the labels, but she says they're all wrong. here's brandi hitt. >> reporter: amanda knox released her memoir "waiting to be heard." in an exclusive interview with diane sawyer knox said she wants to clear her name. >> did you kill meredith kercher? >> no. >> were you there that night? >> no. >> do you know anything you have not told police that you have not said in this book, do you know anything? >> no. >> reporter: knox was an american college student studying abroad when she was arrested and tried for the 2007 murder of her roommate, british student meredith kercher. >> what happened to me hit me like a train, and there was nothing i could do to stop it. >> reporter: knox and her then boyfriend were both convicted in italy's highest criminal court. after serving four years of a 26-year sentence in a tiny room with only a small window, her conviction was overturned. >> did you think about suicide?

>> i did. >> reporter: in her book knox wrote about her panic attacks, losing her hair and finding out the results of a blood sample she had given. >> and the doctor told me that i had tested positive for hiv. i was stunned. i went back to my room with one of the prison officials telling me, well, you should have thought about it before you had sex with all those people. >> reporter: she listed the seven sexual partners she had in her life. >> and they leaked it. >> they leaked it to the media. >> reporter: later she was told it was all a mistake. she was not hiv positive. in march the italian court overturned knox's acquittal and ordered a new trial. brandi hitt, abc news, los angeles. >> and you will hear more from amanda knox when she sits down for her first live interview later on "good morning america." all right, time now to check the weather across the nation, it's not going to look at all

the housing market on a wild upswing right now being driven by a dwindling supply of home. and home prices have soared up 9.3% since february. that is the fastest monthly increase we've seen in seven years. now, among the hottest markets and homes is phoenix, that shot up 23%, san francisco, 19% and las vegas, 18%. there are 25% more buyers than last year. but few homes for sale. for the second day in a row the s&p 500 index opens trading this morning with a record high. now it's just a slight gain from yesterday. the s&p is now less than 3 points from the psychologically important 1600 level. some analysts say passing that mark is a signal that the current bull market has staying power. others would tell you, though, it's time to do some selling. well, apple is making the original iphone obsolete. those phones hit the market in june of 2007 but next month the company is declaring them obsolete in much of the world and vintage here in the u.s. and that basically means most people

new orleans, miami, denver and minneapolis. a major legal development now in the case against george zimmerman. the former neighborhood watch volunteer decided not to seek immunity under florida's stand your ground law. he appeared before a judge yesterday. >> defense attorneys say it was a tactical move so zimmerman can get a trial before a jury as opposed to a judge deciding the case. this trial is set to begin in six weeks. an emotional day for michael jackson's mother leaving a los angeles courtroom in tears after testimony in the wrongful death lawsuit against concert promoter aeg. a paramedic testified when he arrived at jackson's home the day he died, he didn't recognize the singer because he looked like someone at the end stage of a long disease. the detective also told jurors that jackson's doctor, conrad murray, may have been motivated by money. police in the d.c. area are trying to figure out if the series of high-end smash and grab robberies are linked. the latest at a cartier story in maryland. the suspect was buzzed in then detectives say he kept the door open for a group of aggressive

masked robbers who physically took control of the store. the entire robbery took less than one minute. and we're seeing new video from a massive brawl over the weekend at a fraternity party in tempe, arizona, involving students from arizona state. five students were hurt, five others were arrested. this incident and other recent violence has local lawmakers calling for a crackdown on disorderly conduct. a california couple reunited with their baby boy after losing custody following a hospital visit. it all started when anna and alex nikolayev took their 5-month-old son sammy to a sacramento hospital with with flu-like symptoms. now, against medical advice, they moved him to another hospital for a second opinion. the next day child protective services took sammy away citing neglect, but a judge stepped in giving the child back to his parents. >> we can walk in when we want. we can be with him. we can hold him in our arms. we don't have to be scared anymore. >> workers say the second hospital cleared their son to go

home. girls as young as 15 can now buy the morning after pill without a prescription, and it will be available on drugstore shelves no longer locked behind pharmacy counters. the fda lowered the age to buy the plan b one step emergency contraception from 15 to 17 or rather, yes, from 17 to 15, but the move falls short of a court order requiring the pill be made available to women of all ageses. and a big warning for people who eat ground turkey. new testing on several brands of meat show most of it is tainted with dangerous bacteria. "consumer reports" tested more than 250 samples of ground turkey and found 90% of it contained e. coli, staph, salmonella and other forms of infection causing germs. scientists strongly urge you to thoroughly cook the meat to avoid getting sick. a frightening incident from l.a.'s famous mulholland drive. a motorcyclist coming around a turn plows right into two guys on a bicycle. check that out.

the guy who got hit first spent some time in the hospital. he's already out. he did not suffer any broken bones. the other cyclist and the person on the motorcycle were not seriously hurt. >> ouch. now, while you take a look at that and ingest it, how about some sports for you. nba playoff highlights now from espn. with your "sportscenter" update, i'm chris hassel. last night two pivotal playoff games in the western conference. we start with steph curry and the red hot warriors trying to finish off the nuggets, but the nuggets weren't done with curry. physical in this game. javale mcgee with a hard screen and then watch kenneth faried, maybe a little trip on steph. curry not pleased. first curry with an opportunity to pull the warriors within two late missing. klay thompson missing. and the nuggets survive, 107-100. we'll have a game six. that fan probably won't be there. he's a nuggets fan, and he got under the skin of curry. curry, 15 points, 1 of 7 from

>> abc7 news starts right now with breaking news. >> the breaking news, fire is burning in the bay area right now on a red flag warning day. >> the fires broke out overnight in napa county. if you go outside around san francisco and the bay you may smell the smoke. it blew into san francisco because of gusting wind. the national weather service shows the heat signatures from two different fires burning. here are the specifics. cruise working on one blaze in oakville cross road at 15 acres in napa foothills in yontville area. the other is near highway 128

which is 25 to 30 acres. we have a crew headed that way. they will bring you the latest on the two fires burning. >> the three factors you need: dry condition, hot weather and winds. >> we could have them. we will check with mikeologist mike nicco. >> the fastest ends are 74 miles per hour. now here the fastest winds are 45 or 50 miles per hour. the wind advisory continuing in 11:00 possibly up to 60 miles per hour and dry winds are blowing out through so we have red fire warning. the gusts slowed down after 11:00 we will keep the red flag wanting, high fire danger until 6:00 today for the north bay mountains and east bay hills and diabolo range. the elevations above 1,000 feet.

we will have near record high temperatures, 84 to 92 inland. around the bay, 83 to 88 and the coast, 70's to 75. leyla? >> we have closures because of the fire. westbound highway 128 you will see both directions closed. on the other fire in napa county, near oakville cross road, c.h.p. is saying it does not appear there are closures but the fire burns. we have a high wind advisory issued through napa. and we have another high wind advisory for anyone driving high profile vehicles. >> developing news in the murder
