as they're clutching so sadly ♪ tonight on ""nightline."" crime and punishment. should jodi arias die for brutally killing her ex-boyfriend? go danica. surrounded by men, danica is in a lane all her own. millions of dollars and superstar looks. oh, yeah? she may be nascar's most popular driver, but is it about skill or sex appeal? don't do it. one critic says it's arguably the most racist commercial in history. tonight, the controversial ad that has mountain dew tweeting fail.

good evening. her name is jodi arias. after four months on trial, tonight her fate now lies in the hands of a jury. she claims her motive for killing her boyfriend wasn't malice. it was self-defense. now facing the death penalty, arias waits as the final seconds of her roller coaster trial tick away. here's our series, crime and punishment. >> he's trying to get away. >> she is jodi arias, a 32-year-old on trial for her life after the brutal murder of her ex-boyfriend.

for the last four months she's been trying to convince an arizona jury she killed in self-defense. today, juan martinez known for his courtroom theatrics gave his fiery closing arguments. >> even after stabbing him over and over again and after slashing his throat from ear to ear and then even after taking a gun and shooting him in the face she will not let him rest in peace. >> martinez repeatedly called the admitted kill a liar. absolutely without a shadow of the doubt, she's a liar. >> and told the jury that arias looked directly in their eyes and lied on the witness stand. >> it's a field of lies as she sat on the witness stand. >> martinez ended the argument by showing the jury the bloody crime scene photos, three rows of his family and friends shielded their eyes from what jodi arias admitted she did to

the 32-year-old mormon businessman. >> she killed him three times over. >> reporter: today's closing arguments comes for mounts to the day it all started. they've heard from a parade of witnesses, 38 in total from medical examiners. >> i have to conclude that the brain was perforated. to rental car clerks. >> that person who rented the car, is she in court today? >> yes, sir. >> way back in january, it looked like the trial could be quick. >> this is not a case of who done it. the person who done it, the person who committed to committed the killing is in court today. >> reporter: the veteran prar whipping through his case in a plaert of weeks. first taking the jury through a gruesome crime scene. >> there's different coloration on the shirt, but i don't know the cause. >> reporter: and a killing so heinous he believes arias deserves the ultimate punishment, death. >> his throat was slit from ear

to ear. >> then graphic photos of a different kind. nude s s of jodi and travis taken in 2008. and these photos snapped during the killing itself. just as stunning as the brutal crime, arias' actions after she left travis' house, spending time with a new interest, cuddling and kissing. >> every time we started kissing, it got more escalated. >> exboyfriends and exgirlfriends, too, used to create duelling portraits of jodi and travis. >> did he treat you with dignity? >> yes. >> tell us about who jodi was. >> he told us that he had a stalker. >> reporter: but the most

anticipate anticipated testimony of all a jodi herself. her story of self-defense was her third version. and she took 18 days on the stand to tell it. >> we were in the red house right on highway 1. >> sexually explicit at times. >> there have been a few times when i would just pull you on the bed and start. he kicked me in the ribs. >> reporter: but when it came double play to the moment she drove a knife into travis alexander and slit his throat? >> almost nothing for a long time. >> reporter: the jury also heard jo jodi's other two stories on these interrogation tapes in court. >> if travis was here today, he would tell you it wasn't me. >> reporter: when confronted with the pictures and a mountain of forensic evidence -- >> that was not my foot. >> reporter: jod icon cobbed a

new tale that she was at the house when two masked intruders broke in and slaughtered him but spared her. she even acted out the dramatic scene for the detectives. >> and i was just going through t the pictures. >> reporter: the detective didn't buy it at the point she flashed this smile in her mug shot. she's made quite a name for herself, winning jailhouse singing competitions and granting national television interviews like this one where she made this bold prediction. >> no jury is going to convict me? >> because i'm innocent. and you can mark my words on that one. no jury can convict me. >> reporter: if she's wrong, jodi arias may gain notoriety for something else. she could become just the fourth woman on arizona's death row. her defense will try to prevent that with their closing argument
