6:30 pm
6:31 pm
let's go back to breaking news this, is east san jose. you can see there is smoke coming from a fire. >> this is burning near hill view airport. we understand it's not affecting flights into, or out of, that small airport at this time. >> you can see that could change because this is and seems to be spreading. winds are gusting to roughly 16 miles per hour so not too bad. >> this is our sky 7 shot as the helicopter gets closer to the scene. >> this is a grass fire, winds not too bad but will be fanning flames somewhat.
6:32 pm
this does appear to be spreading. >> we've had problem was fires around the state. so this is an early fire season for us. >> all over the state. >> because of the heat it's been so hot here. but the good news is that it will be cooling off zs you look live keep in mind a grass fire is. >> r spreading. >> it appears we just saw a helicopter going through there. that is certainly an effort
6:33 pm
when you have grass fire like this is that if you can get choppers putting pulled here. >> you can see a line of fire on the screen. >> we can see just how close this is burning to homes in this area. >> that is right. you'll see firefighters making a defense line to try to keep it from homes. >> yes. so smoke being againer yaited. the airport is not being affected. >> you can telt it's still spreading. firefighters are starting to get a handle on what they're dealing with and responding to this. >> with wind and heat and homes just feet away there
6:34 pm
will be concern this could spread. >> yes. you can see the burn autos this is just one had a number of fires. terrible fires in southern california causing damage. this one will not spread too rapidly. looks like firefighters are pouncing on it. there, you can see fires ringed by houses. this is spencer christian. >> it's warm up there. so it's been warm and dry across the bay area, humidity low. we have not had an issue with
6:35 pm
winds down there so far today. now smoke seems to be drifting rather forcely about 16 miles per hour winds but that is nothing like gusts so it's hot, dry, and those factors contribute to fire danger. >> one of the neighborhoods is hidden glenn. it's one of the neighborhoods in this area. holy oak is another one. good news is that there is a water dropping helicopter in action right now. >> yes. this does seem they're making good headway.
6:36 pm
you know earlier today we saw 300 acres burn. that did indeed. >> this area into central valley has been warm. a couple days ago, it was windier. winds normalized a bit as you know, still this risk going to remain us with us. perhaps cooling by tomorrow, enough of inincrease to help firefighting efforts. >> yes. there the won't be heavy or wide spread but going to be about 20 degrees cooler. that is significant.
6:37 pm
skpf course with a chance of showers that will reduce rather dramatically the risk of fires. >> that is a perfect storm for nonfire conditions. we saw pictures of firefighters moving it away from the houses. and the winds aren't too bad. it doesn't look as though this is going cause too much problems. >> we have a neighbor on the phone now. how close are you to the fire? >> yes. about 500 feet away from the fire. >> what are you seeing now? from your perspective? >> now, helicopter and firefighters i think they can stop the fire. yes. a lot better than the road. >> which neighborhood are you
6:38 pm
in? >> i'm on quimby road. >> yes. >> we can see it's, i'm sure you're noticing smoke is diminishing. we understand 40 acres have burned. >> it's a very good sign at this point. you can see llt of charred ground. seems fairly clear. with luck this will not be a threat for longer but these houses are awfully close. >> yes. they are. sam mentioned he's just 500 yards from this. that is burning close. you've probably been able to see smoke from your shop sam smoo yes. i'm here. >> can you smell the smoke? >> about five minutes ago a
6:39 pm
lot of smoke coming close to open parking lot. and of a lot of people moving their car autos yes. please stay safe. we appreciate your coming on the phone with us. it doesn't look like it is getting worse. >> a lot of ground crews. you can see water dropping helicopters. >> so we'll move on from this. we're going to stay with us until it's out. they're getting close to it not being too much of a danger. there are still flames burning. you can see firefighters there with hoses spraying water pushing flames way from attacking flames first. >> sky 7 pulls out we can get
6:40 pm
the vantage point of neighbors who are close to this fire line. i'm not sure if you can see them going to wet their roofs down with garden dresses. when you're watching flames burning so close. >> homeowners, there, you can see residents clearly walking along the perimeter. you can see volunteers and neighbors walking and trying to help. >> interesting--considering how dry it is. it's clear there is not much vegetation in the area. you can see smoke rising in
6:41 pm
almost a vertical pattern indicates winds are not. strong but still, very dry, quite warm. >> seems like we're talking about this early for the year. we have an important resource for you on our web site abc 7 news.com all details of what you need to do. how far out that defensible space should go. >> it's a terrific thing to check out. normally we're not talking about fire danger around california last couple days for another month or two this, is early in the season. but it's been so dry, as you know. and last couple days perfect conditions for fire, windy, hot. humidity has been low. >> yes. >> we've been talking about
6:42 pm
over past months how little rainfall we've had. so grass here is just tinder dry. you can see more flames here. probably embers blowing but there are a number of fire crews out there. >> yes about 40 acres burned so far. there is no evacuation, sky 7 stay on this picture. >> this season produced very dry vegetation, dry ground. it's not just low relative humidity right now. it's been dry so long and across the area so long. now we've got heat and winds.
6:43 pm
but good news is that sharp change in weather pattern will be cooler tomorrow. temperatures about 20 degrees lower in this area. humidity will be up and there is a chance of showers. weather conditions are going to be more favorable. >> we can see traffic here, you can see traffic is creeping along here. this is capitol expressway. we're seeing a dark smoke coming on to this area here. you can see cars that are coming backed up and stopping. this is capitol expressway. >> yes. >> and the amount of smoke
6:44 pm
seems to be diminishing somewhat. but it is in a busy area and there will be people slowing down. and of course the neighborhood streets as well. there is a good drop of water from a helicopter. >> on that area just sort of erupted again. and we did see neighbors out in that defensible space area checking out this situation. it's heading up this hillside a bit. >> you can imagine with every passing minute they get more organized and get strategize
6:45 pm
on how they're going to get this under control. we've seen hot spots ask all it takes is another ember. and you can see how close this is burning as well. this is a busy shopping area, too. >> keep pulling back if you can. it gives us a broader view of where we are now and looks encouraging. you can see one right there. it's surrounded by burned out
6:46 pm
grass they still have work, to do. all of the grass could catch fire. >> eastridge mall officials say it's burn together south and that it does not pose risks to that mall. so people paying attention to this. we've been told about 30 acres perhaps more now. in this area, it's all every this one as well. >> wind can kick up a little bit. this is still the time of the day it would be windy out. >> so it could generate a breeze that may become
6:47 pm
stronger in that area. and yes. you know sl tl is just a fire yesterday at a recycling center. this is something everybody has been dealing with. >> and good news is that this does not look like it's going to pose a danger this evening. >> we watch cal fire crews drop a lot of water. >> going back to get back here and pick up more water dump it on the fire. around the state again we've had fires in wine country and terrible fires burning in southern california. cuts caused real damage down there.
6:48 pm
so these live pictures we normally won't see this time of the year. we're off to an early start for fire soone one challenge is that when these flames spread like this, so much fuel here, you can see flames just jumping in the air, you can see crews there in just behind this line of trees knocking this view. >> this tree may not be longed for this world. this is the kind of fuel these fires just devour, dry grass just racing into tree autos yes. >> sometimes it can be oily. or have burns easily. >> yes. typically this is the time of the year they're coming out of the rainy season. so we would have had rain to produce the moisture we're expecting at the time of the year, everybody is at record
6:49 pm
dry levels. veg station right for fires to provide fuel. >> as you see from that live picture look how many houses this is hidden glenn neighborhoods in and around the fire. you can see the densely populated area there. there is so much concern. all of these hoses in this heat can burn quickly. >> sky 7 pulls out for us we can see just how much progress has been made here. it seems as though. >> yes. >> and hot spots here and there. >> and nothing of significant r cans looks like. >> and we talked about defensible space eshllyer and making sure you have proper
6:50 pm
zones 30 feet from your house and keeping that line from your home this takes you to 100 feet so what do you do? cut down vegetation and remove things from underneath your deck where there is grass growing. that is 30 feet. make sure shrubs and reez aren't too close together. >> we're hearing from fire officials they're not too concerned about this fire because there is a small cluster of trees here. and and 40 acres. >> great news here.
6:51 pm
>> and in and around this area great news is that we did not see sparks moving into neighborhoodses and landing and causing problems in individual yards which is where it can get tricky. >> from several years back there was a fire at santana row. >> right. >> many homes burned because of that. >> hi. >> spencer again you're telling us winds are not a factor here. >> just checked latest information here. this is considered calm so they're not a factor so far. let's hope they'll the don't pick up any time soon. you can see that is an
6:52 pm
indication for the winds. it's dwg to be cool. they found water and they'll have to drain swimming pools if they have. just pulling up enough water who knows maybe thousands of gallons. it's an enormous amount of water. >> that is where lake cunningham is. that is where helicopters are going and filling up. helping to put out the fire. >> they're daring. safety is first and foremost but they have to carry large amounts of water and supply low in populated areas and have to deal with the smoke
6:53 pm
and heat and nermals coming off of the fire. it's challenging and impressive. >> and i think we're getting rdz to watch another drop in this area. >> what you do not want is an amount of water. it's serious. it could hurt if you they drop it on you. so they have to be careful. they're on the phone and radio communicating trying to figure out what the best spot is. what they see ground crew telling where they might want water zpropd trying to make sure folks are out of the way and make sure they use this efficiency. -- efficiently as possible. >> there we go. >> so after debate to make ts
6:54 pm
decision down it goes z then we'll head back to lake cunningham park. >> just to clarify here to the right is what the fire looks like. you can see, we have notice fire crews getting in, knocking this down. >> so on the left, what it was like it was much bigger fire at that time. they did do a good job of getting control of this pushing it away from the houses. it and looked like from where smoke was blowing it looked like the wind was really pushing away from.
6:55 pm
>> on the phone with us is a young woman named chanel ramirez. are you there? >> yes. >> thanks for joining us. tell whaus you saw? >> i am home but i was driving home and there is a big field there. we started to drive by i was at the corner. there is one firefighting there. flames were to the sidewalk and my window was up and i can feel the heat. >> that is incredible. >> you can hear me yelling at my husband, go, go, i can feel it. >> there is one fire fighter that looked puzzled.
6:56 pm
he looked nervous, too. this is coming full force, just so long. >> that must have been scarey. were you on capitol expressway? >> yes. we're seeing cars going slow right now. there is a lot of smoke in the area. >> it was scary, fully going quickly. we can feel the heat. >> chanel you're so noise t to -- nice to come on. thank you very much. now, crystal martinez is on the phone with us. you work in a restaurant don't you?. >> yes. doi. >> tell us what you're seeing. >> they vit somewhat controlled. it we're pretty big.
6:57 pm
it was smoky, pretty bad. our lot is filled with a lot of people with cameras and people just watching to make sure everything is okay. >> but businesses are open in this area? >> yes. we're still open and running. >> what are the specials snoont. >> two for 20s godsing on. -- for $20 going on. >> businesses up in the area. there are no evacuations. clearly it's well in hand but that is good news with all of these houses and such a busy area of east san jose. in one had to be put out of homes tonight. we did see a lot of neighbors walking the perimeter of the field looking for sparks and just protecting homes. >> yes from. this vantage point you can see some of the defensible space dan has been talking about. so important to have that.
6:58 pm
>> yes. we remind ourselves, this is the time for all of us, myself included, all of us want to could it as well make sure our homes are protected. we do what we can to protect our neighborhoods. it's not that hard to do. it's easy to ignore, i know, it's a great reminder. it's an early fire season to do that. >> yes. this is early. >> not a good sign. looking at warmer months ahaechld such a dry rainy condition. and that doesn't help things. we've had an early heat wave.
6:59 pm
very very low relative humidity if this pattern continues we'll look at fire danger for a long time. >> we want to share with you pictures received via twitter. sorry. but remember you can follow us on twitter. we'll share picture there's for you. >> thanks for joining us here on abc 7 news at 6:00 we follow this breaking news. grass fire looks well in hand in east san jose. in east san jose. thanks for watching.
