eye after syria threatens to retaliate after two air strikes. >> there are fears that the syrian civil war could spread beyond its borders and beyond the middle east. devin dwyer is joining us from washington with the latest. >> reporter: good morning, linzie, good morning, john. syria's government says the air strikes have opened the door to all possibilities, including direct attacks on israel. the weekend air strikes obliterated syrian military targets. the rockets dropping from the night sky in what syrian officials called, a declaration of war. the israeli invaders committed a blatant act of aggression, this man says. israel has not claimed responsibility for the attacks. but this morning, put two iron dome missile defense batteries on alert for a counterstrike. u.s. officials are now concerned

the situation could spiral out of control. worried that syria's stock piles of weapons could fall into the wrong hands or that syria's civil war could turn into a regional war. some lawmakers want the u.s. to put into effect a no-fly zone. and arm some of the rebels fighting syria's president bashar assad. >> we don't want to be the sheriff. we want to be the coach. that's where we can bring the most impact. >> reporter: the president is weighing all the options. >> i don't take any options off the table as commander in chief. but what i do know is that i cannot see a scenario right now in which american boots are the ground would make any sense. >> reporter: now the white house won't directly comment on the air strikes. but president obama says israel is justified in taking preemptive military action to protect its people. john and linzie? >> all right, devin dwyer in washington. thank you. there are new developments from boston this morning. the uncle of tamerlan tsarnaev

has arrived in massachusetts to arrange for his nephew's burl. ruslan tsarni and three friends arrived in boston to take care of tamerlan's funeral. his final resting place still unresolved since cemeteries in three states have refused the body. investigators in california are hoping the survivors of a deadly limousine accident will help them know what went wrong. the limo was taking a newly wed bride and her friends out to celebrate when the car burst into flames. five women, including the new bride, died. with more, he's abc's clayton sandell. >> reporter: the pictures are terrifying. a stretch limousine burst into flames. nine women were passengers inside celebrating the friend's upcoming marriage. as the limo crossed the bridge over san francisco bay on saturday night, fire erupted. >> the driver was able to get out. some people stopped to try to pull people from the fire. an unfortunate situation. >> reporter: four of the women suffering burns and breathing

smoke escaped. but five of their friends, including the bride, were killed. investigators are trying to figure out why the limo, a 1999 lincoln caught fire. the company, san francisco-based limo stop did not return our calls. the national limousine association weighed in saying -- the 110,000 professionally chauffeured cars are safe and incidents like this are truly an anomaly. investigators are putting together the pieces to figure out how a night that should have been a celebration turned so deadly. clayton sandell, and, los angeles. >> our thanks to clayton. an avid gun rights lawyer from alabama takes over today as the president of the national rifle association. his name is james porter, a partner in a specialized firm. that defends gun manufacturers. this weekend, he left no doubt where he stands, calling on every u.s. citizen to train in the use of standard military firearms in order to quote,

fight tyranny. the new leader steps in just as the teachers who gave their lives in sandy hook are being remembered. the congressional medal of honor society will give its highest award to the six teachers and administrators that were killed in newtown. gabby giffords has been awarded the profiles in courage award for her efforts against gun violence. in presenting the award, caroline kennedy said giffords turned personal tragedy into change. an outpouring of grief this morning for a utah soccer referee who died after he was punched in the face by a 17-year-old goalie. the family and friends of the ref are calling for better sportsmanship and self-control from players. he spent a week in a coma after being struck by the teen for giving him a penalty in a game. his daughter said he had been attacked by players twice before. and a frantic search is under way in washington for an elderly woman who vanished from

reagan national airport friday night after flying in from barbados. victoria kong was first shown in a taxi line at the arrivals curb and then walking away on a bike trail. the 82-year-old has been showing signs of dementia. the massive fire that scorched 44 square miles of coastal california is nearly out. firefighters got a break from hot, dry conditions over the weekend. at its peak, the fire threatened nearly 4,000 homes. only 15 were damaged. investigators have ruled out arson as a cause saying it was started by accident. accuweather's jim dickey a key player on our extreme weather team, tracking fire d s conditions and flooding in the midwest. >> good morning, john and linzie. we're keeping rain in place. a slow-moving upper low that's been here all weekend, all last week. the heaviest rain in virginia

tragic crash at an air show in spain. >> a vintage jet built in the 1950s crashing into a hangar then exploding into a massive fireball. the trapped pilot was initially rescued. he later died at the hospital. officials say he was an experienced pilot. they're trying to figure out what caused the crash. overseas, a security scare for justin bieber. caught on video. a 19-year-old fan in dubai somehow able to rush the stage, briefly grabbing the singer who was seated at the piano. bieber escaped. the body guards rushed in. the piano was overturned in the mel erk ee. the concert had gotten off to a bad start when bieber showed up two hours late. a ft. lauderdale teenager says he can't wait to get back on the surfboard. it may take awhile. because the last time he was out there, a shark took a chunk out of his leg. mike adler is recovering in a florida hospital. the 16-year-old was fending off a shark attack. >> his whole jaw cramped down on my leg. from there, i knew it was a shark attack. so then, i was paddling in as

fast as i could. >> reporter: the ft. lauderdale teen and his four friends were surfing at this central florida beach known for bull sharks. >> it starts limping and jumping around. i rushed towards him. >> reporter: mike didn't see the shark that bit him. the wounds reveal enough. >> the doctors told me i was lucky that it didn't hit, like, a major artery. that would have been a lot more bleeding. >> reporter: if not for a mysterious stranger, he may have lost his foot. >> i'm so glad he was there. >> reporter: according to friends, a man who had military training rushed to his aid, using his surfboard leash as a tourniquet.:;.mñ because of him, doctors say they were able to repair four tendons. mike is expected to make a full recovery. despite the pain, mike tweeted these messages. i just got bit by a shark in sebastian. and i better be on "shark week," referring to the popular discovery channel series. will it be once bitten, twice

>> we start off along the san mateo bridge and everything is open after the deadly limo fire. it doesn't look to be causing any damage to the bridge and traffic is free flowing here. in san jose, the drive along 280 away from 17, traffic can barely be seen. there is no construction and no crashes. we do have construction in oakland if you are traveling along northbound 880 from 66, to 29th avenue that is where we have one lane out until 5:00 a.m. >> speaking of the tragic fire on the bridge we have developing news about it and we expect to find out more on the fire on the san mateo-hayward bridge later this morning. the limo driver is describing what happened. >> we hope to find more about the tell accident later this

morning and c.h.p. scheduled a briefing. we hear from orville brown the driver of the white stretch limousine that caught fire on san mateo-hayward bridge killing five female passengers selling the san francisco congress -- chronicle that there were so many flames in 90 seconds the car was fully engulfed. the cell phone video shows the terrible scene of the limo on fire. live doppler 7 hd was overhead with four women including the driver escaped the burning car. the survivors climbed through the partition in the front of the limousine. the celebration was for the wedding of a friend, and her co-worker told us this.
