>> you can see here a burning limo scene saturday night. investigators revealed it may take several weeks to determine the cause of the fire. five women died in the inferno, just minutes from a destination. a hotel when this limo caught fire. >> she was celebrating with her friends. the size of their party exceeded limo seating capacity by one. >> this vehicle listed as for carrying eight or fewer passenger ootz fire broke out in the westbound lanes. and crews raised to the scene. firefighters used a turn around to reach the burning car. we have live team coverage on the limo scene fire. nick smith talked to a

survivor. you spoke to the limo driver? >> right. he lives here in he took a step by step through what happened saturday night, an event he called horrific. >> i did not -- see smoke. >> or vil ricky brown told abc 7 news when the cry for help came from the back of the limo he was driving he misunderstood. >> i'm thinking she's saying she'd like to smoke. >> the 46-year-old ro brown told us he figured out what they're trying to say. >> no. no. smoke, pull over. >> and he looked back a couple times and see the grief on her face. >> brown says there are no

shoulders on the bridge it took him 90 seconds to figure out where, and when to pull over. the passenger started to crime through the partition window separating him from the main compartment. >> so as soon as i pull over there is a lady coming through the partition. another lady coming through. i'm on the phone, i'm on the phone trying to call 911. i can't. i'm shaking he says he helped two more women then someone managed to open the back passenger door. >> the door was opened, it was horrific. flames were high. and it seemed like they were just, i don't know how to explain it. but they -- they -- the car was engulfed. >> now, brown is a ware of the chp saying that that limo was only certified to carry eight passengers. he said before the fire he was not aware of that. he's only driven for the company two months. he's the driver not the one that books prtys and did not

know a party that have size, he says could ride in that stretch limo. he went on to tell us about what it's like to wait for the first truck to arrive. he thought it was a long wait. we'll have more for you on that tonight at 5:00. >> we're getting a firsthand account from a survivor of the fire. >> she. nick smith is live with the story. nick. >> you just heard laura mention that woman in her piece. that woman was a 36-year-old who is one of four women currently employed here at fruit veil health care center. all worked here at one time except for one. she tells me everything went wrong. >> i was sitting behind the

driver. he said it's -- the fire came out. i said there is a fire, stop the car, stop the car! and he stopped the car. and he just got out from the car. >> she says she crawled through the glass divider. she got stuck, and called out to the driver for help. >> let me get out from the car. he just opened the door that. is all he said. i asked him, help me, help me. bring out my head from the compartment. help me! i just squeezed over and slide myself. in the back. one of my friends came out.

and i heard someone yelling. they were stuck. i tried to pull her out from there she made two trips before a good samaritan stopped her. >> i need to go back and save them. but... the man said, you cannot go back anymore. >> speaking with her was gut wrenching. it's clear she's still shaken. coming up at 6:00 you'll hear more from the night that everything went wrong. >> nick, thank you. as you just heard she was the first to leave the hospital. >> and in anguish there after, we're talking to dave there, after the accident. she has just cuts and some bruising. she has been upgraded from critical to serious condition. another woman upgraded to

serious condition this afternoon z mary grace gardiano in stanford medical center. we believe she may have been released. the hospital has not confirm that had yet. >> coming up we'll take a look at the safety of the limo. looking inside of the vehicle you can see how hard for passengers to escape those flames. >> happening now, east palo alto police launching a targeted operation against street gangs. latest shooting took place yesterday afternoon. someone opened fire on stun smun in front of a mcdonalds. the chief says the shooter was targeting someone police will try to negotiate a cease fire. >> a volunteer firefighter in benicia has been arrested on suspension of setting two fires. investigators believe the 23-year-old set the fires.

the sheriff's office has identified two brother who's drowned in the lexington reservoir sunday afternoon. a 35-year-old from scott's valley and a 30-year-old died after the canoe cap sized. two other people managed to swim to safety. sky 7 hd over the scene yesterday. investigators say windy conditions could have been a factor in this accident and no one was wearing a life vest. >> victory today for san bruno city leaders. a state committee recommended the agency impose a $2.5 billion penalty because of the deadly 2010 pipeline explosion. the recommendation after the city and others called on the puc to take toughest action possible. >> pg&e said the penalties are extreme. eight people dead, 38 homes destroyed is extreme.

to the driver managed to crawl through the opening to safety. the other five were trapped in back and died. abc 7 news continues our team coverage now with insight from a man who owns another limo scene company. wayne? >> today, a person from p.u.c. when regulates limb scenes was he will cooperate with the investigation. we asked what it's like in that car, how people might have gotten out. >> when russell magillcutty heard about the fire, several scenarios came to mind. >> they might have overloaded the equipment.

>> the limb scene russell owns bears only a casual resemblance to the one that burned saturday night. >> if i'm hitting unlock while you're trying to pull a handle ill it will not allow the door to be opened. >> theoretically a fire in the back and a nonfunctioning door would have led passengers to the front. but there would only have been one way out. the opening looks large. by the time you factor in the seat cushion, maybe someone will hurry there is no getting through here for an average sized person. not for a large one. >> this would have been awful. filled with smoke, flames it was a night of fun, celebration turning to terror in less than the length of the bridge.

cal fire responded to 1100 wildfires this year. the dry winter paid conditions ripe for a long, devastating fire season. >> climate is changing. it's going to cost money and lives. >> they assured californians the state is ready. despite costs highering firefighters and tuning up equipment was done early when latest readings showed own 17% water content. leaders vow money will not be an issue if fires keep up. >> we'll do whatever it takes to fight the fires. >> locals are very concerned about whether they can fulfill a request for help.
