and they went missing as girls. today they were found years later as women.

live, this is abc 7 news. tonight we are getting the full, heart breaking story of what happened inside that limousine that caught fire on the san mateo bridge. >> here's what we learned so far. the limb/had nine passengers, one more than is allowed under state rules. the rear end of the limo was running very close to the ground as it was moving. >> the survivors had to crawl through a pash tigs dividing the driver's from the passenger's compartments. among the dead are nurses from

community hospital. >> and we received photos of two other women who were killed. all were on a girls night out to celebrate the bride's marriage. our reporter talked with a husband tonight. >> reporter: carolyn, he said he and his wife did almost everything together. they would even go grocery shopping with each other. bun on a rare occasion she went out on saturday night and left him alone with the children. >> it's almost that close to perfect. >> reporter: it was the life he shared with his wife jenny before she became trapped in a burning limo and died along with four friends. >> i can't believe that it happened. >> reporter: it happened on the same day they celebrated their oldest daughter's ten birthday. jenny's friend survived. she called in tears and told john that just before the fire

broke out smoke poured in from the cabin. >> she wasn't able to pull her out before the car was engulfed in flames. >> reporter: he had to tell his daughter the next day. >> i thought she going to take it when i say it. >> reporter: in an instant that almost perfect life that he had is gone, replaced by the sadness of watching his children grow up without will mother and the sight of his two year old son so hard to reach her. >> he said we have to call mommy. >> reporter: all of the women in that limo had worked or were working at the fruitville health center in oakland. john says they had regular get togethers and the husbands and

the children all knew each other well. reporting live, i'm alan wang. >> the 47 year old wife and mother of two was from san lorenzo. relatives gathered at the family home to pray. the young cousins called anna mama because she was like a second mother to them. >> always being really sweet and very loving. very supportive. like family. and just always there. >> anna leaves behind a husband, a 14 year old son and an 8 year old daughter. >> now at least one of the survivors has been released from the hospital. she had minor cuts. she is home. we believe another passenger may have been released as well.

two more are in santa clara medical center. >> the nine women were on their way to a hotel in foster city after enjoying a night out on the town in alameda. they were minutes from their destination when the vehicle caught fire. we have witness accounts from one of the surviving passengers as well as the driver. >> reporter: a witness who says she was riding behind and then alongside that limb/tells abc 7 news she noticed something strange about that vehicle before the fire. and tonight there seems to be a difference of opinion between the surviving passenger and the limo driver. >> i don't know what we could have done differently to save them. >> reporter: the driver is reflecting on saturday night when his limo went up in flames. >> the car was engulfed. completely engulfed. and i felt that nobody could have survived that. >> reporter: he says at first he

mistakenly thought his passengers were asking to smoke when they started knock on the partition next to the driver's seat. he says panic then filled the limo. >> there was smoke and then the fire came out. and red fire. and stop the car! stop the car! >> reporter: brown pulled over and within 90 seconds, flames devoured the lincoln town car. the survivors got out by squeezing through the partition leading to the front seat. the driver could have done more. >> he didnstop the car. he get out from the car. he just get out from the car. >> flames started bursting. i mean, they just -- everywhere. it happened so fast. >> reporter: the westbound limo had almost reached the foster city side before it stopped. before the fire another person riding on the bridge said she

noticed the rear of the limo sagging close to the ground. >> it was dragging about an inch off the ground. it wasn't on the ground, but it was very close to the ground. it was just about like that. >> reporter: she said she has contacted the chp about that. a decade ago that type of lincoln town car limo was the subject of a safety investigation after rear end collisions. and in 2004 a customer complained of an electrical circuit board problem. but the cause of this fire is unknown. >> stay with abc 7 news for updates. no so many questions that need answers. you'll get complete coverage on our website. turning our attention to the weather. some big changes, noticeably cooler with some showers. let's check in our

dunge dungeon. >> reporter: tears, cheers and jubilation erupt when three women have been found alive. the women were rescued from this house and a 5 it 2 year old suspect has now been taken into custody. one of the missing women called 911 after neighbors kicked open the door when they heard cries for help. >> i've been missing for ten years and i'm free now. >> reporter: amanda berry disappeared in april of 2003 when she called her sister to say she was getting a ride home from her job at burger king. it was the day before her 17th birthday. a year later, gina was 14 years old when she disappeared walking home from middle school. the teenagers were the subject of ha intense search. >> we're happy that they're safe

and in good condition. and we'll get to the bottom of it. >> reporter: the third woman was identified as michelle knight. she disappeared in 2002. >> police have identified a school bus driver who had the girls. we will get more information from them and they do intend to hold a news conference. >>. a sinkhole opened up. a public sewer pipe is believed to are caused this hole in the middle of the intersection. new at 11:00 a sewage spill forces safe way to close. this cell phone video shows raw sewage covering the safe way on jackson street, not pleasant, obviously. the store sits beneath a large apartment complex.

only foie gras farm. a worker shoved a metal pump down a duck's throat and a pump shot up to a pound of corn into a duck. >> we didn't know as we walked in we were going to encounter sick birds, dead birds, birds with open, festering wounds. >> reporter: in addition to the dead and dying ducks, activists found others whose livers were so large they couldn't move, couldn't defend themselves against rats that were eating them alive. a person may not force-feed a bird for the purpose of enlarging the bird's liver beyond normal size. a product may not be sold in california, if it is the result of force-feeding to create a

bigger size. the chef said he and a group of chefs are working to overturn the ban. >> the chef told me i'm definitely on board with fighting it, but it's going to take a while. >> reporter: when i contacted the chef, he agreed to the interview, setting a time and place, but then backed out. >> he told me he knows he's breaking the law, but floie gra is part of the french cuisine. >> reporter: they now get their foie gras from hudson valley. we showed how they used isolation cams. the ducks couldn't move during the weeks of force-feeding. the workers now use a gentler method. the chef told our producers how he sells hudson valley foie gras

by using code woords. >> he said we chose golden apple when it was the apple season. soon it will be cherry jubilee. >> reporter: john is the lawyer for the animal legal defense fund who is suing la toque. >> the way it worked was that he would not have received the foie gras had he not paid for this expensive meal. nonetheless, it was framed and described as a gift from the chef. >> reporter: the chef says this is his personal boston tea party, that he's working a loophole in the law as a way of protest. >> we serve it to customers that purchase nothing at all. that just stop by the bar to say hi. and encourage my efforts. >> reporter: the activists

couldn't get the police to cite him for serving foie gras. we couldn't find a sincele incident of the law coming down on it. they say it costs too much to send investigators into high-priced restaurants with the possibility of finding a flaw gras infraction. we showed them what we found at la folie. >> we will send an officer out there. if these people order this dish. it was served. they paid for it. and that's a direct violation of the law as it was written. >> reporter: hundreds of restaurants stopped selling foie gras. so the act vests are the only threat the chefs face. the activists would say it's not

humane at all. the ski lifts are closed, but there was fresh snow in the sierra today. this is what it looked like at heavenly earlier this afternoon. >> up to 6 inches fell this morning. abc 7 news is here with a look at live doppler. >> yeah. it was raping at lake tahoe, but above 8400 foot elevation it was snowing indeed. so pretty late in the season. as you look at live doppler you can see it has quieted down quite a bit from earlier today when we had heavy thunderstorms. a few sprinkles showing up around the parkway. you're looking at downtown san francisco. we certainly have cloud cover out there. temperatures are pretty comfortable. 64 in oakland. and currently 59 degrees in santa cruz. here are the highlights. we're looking at isolated

showers overnight. showers will end by afternoon, early evening hours. and it is going to be warmer by the end of the week heading into the weekend. satellite showing you the area of low pressure that brought the instability, brought the moisture that wrapped around and created the showery activity. the unsettled pattern will be with us through tuesday as the area of low pressure continues to move down through southern california. as it moves out of the picture, things will quiet down. overnight tonight could be a shower or two. 5:00 tomorrow you're looking at cloud cover. by 6:00 for the morning commute, you can see some spotty showers showing up at 6:00. very isolated in nature. we see a little bit of return up toward north hamilton. and by 5:00 it is all over. tomorrow morning, temperatures on the mild side. we're looking at 50s across the entire bay area. certainly cloud cover.
