good morning, everyone. gina dejesus, amanda berry and her little girl are all safe now returned to their families. >> one mom called it "the best mother's day present ever" as the families reunite, the suspect prepared for his first court appearance. we begin with abc's devin dwyer. [ cheers ] >> reporter: it's a storybook ending to a horrific ordeal. >> i still pinch myself. i know she's there and i know she's going to be there. but it's like a dream. >> reporter: gina dejesus and amanda berry today waking up at me for the first time in nearly a decade. authorities have charged this man, 52-year-old ariel castro with four counts of kidnapping and three counts of rape. today he weigh formally arraigned. >> the criminal complaints are first degree felonies. >> reporter: abc news learned amanda, gina and michele knight have revealed harrowing details of their captivity allegedly kidnapped by ariel castro who

offered each a ride home. then locked up in separate rooms with chains. a law enforcement source told abc station wews the oldest victim michele knight said she was pregnant five times, telling police that he punched her stomach repeatedly to force a miscarriage. knight is still in the hospital. the women were only allowed years in disguise until this moment on monday. >> we found 'em. we found 'em. >> reporter: police arrived on seymour street minutes after amanda berry b through that or. >> something must have clicked and she saw an opportunity and she took that opportunity. she is the true hero. >> reporter: now, investigators says from ariel castro is cooperating in custody. his two brothers will not face charges. police believe there are no additional victims in his scheme. john and diana. >> devin, let's talk about the other brothers. why they're being released and

how is it no one else in the castro family appears to have known what was going on. >> reporter: it's so hard to believe, isn't it? but police say there's no evidence that anyone else knew of these women who were never seen outside the home. castro family members told them ariel kept them at a distance and he put up quite a facade even helping to hand out missing flyers for gina dejesus whhe disappeared and played music at a fund-raiser for her family. >> sti so many questions. devin dwyer in washington for us this morning. thank. we will probably never forget that stunning 911 call amanda berry first made to authorities. >> you heard part of it in devin's report. here's more of what police are saying on their radios as they closed in on the scene. take a listen. >> might be for real. might be others in the house. gina dejesus might be in the house also. we found 'em. fnd 'em. >> all right, about a minute

late an officer is heard saying "we also have michele knight in the house." 32 years old. again, knight remains in the hospital. another important day in the cleveland case. a live report coming up on "good morning america.". our other big story, the jodi arias verdict. today the same jury that found her guilty of first degree murder will consider whether or not she lives or dies. >> she wasted no time telling people what she prefers. >> we found her first degree murder guilty. >> reporter: as jodi arias teared up at the verdict, loud gasps came from the family of travis alexander, the ex-boyfriend arias is convicted of killing. they are tears of relief were echoed. [ cheers ] >> reporter: by the cheering crowd outside the arizona courthouse. >> she couldn't kill the american justice system. >> reporter: after the verdict she gave this exclusive interview from jail and has been placed on suicide watch. >> the worst outcome for me would be natural fe.

i would much rather die sooner than later. longevity runs in nye family and i don't want to spend the rest of my natural life in one place. it was unexpected because there was no premeditation on my part. i can see how things look that way, but i didn't expect premeditation. >> reporter: 38 witnesses testified during the four-month trial including arias who spent an unbelievable 18 days on the stand. >> i don't remember. >> reporter: she tried convincing the jury she killed him in self-defense stabbing him 27 types and shoot ing him in te head. but ars told police three different versions of what happened back in 2008. >> i can't really explain why my mind did what it did. >> reporter: arias claims she was abused by alexander. >> she simply snapped. >> reporter: but the jury didn't buy it and neither did the victim's family. >> now that a verdict is renn dered i hope they can find

peace. >> reporter: she hopes it will bring peace to travis alexander's family. >> brandi hitt, thank you for that report. much more coming up on "gma." breaking news overnight from bangladesh. there's been a new and deadly fire in a garment factory. eight people died when an 11-story building containing a factory and apartments caught fire overnight. a factory director and police official were among the dead. also overnight crews discovered even more bodies in that building that housed five factories before it collapsed. now more than 900 people have died in what is the worst tragedy in history of the global garment manufacturing industry. well, an emotional hearing about what happened last september on an attack in benghazi, libya. three foreign service officers told congress yesterday that not enough was done to protect their colleagues. the attacks in benghazi killed ambassador chris stevens and three other americans. chris stevens said he wanted to send a special team of forces and was furious when ordered to

stand down. the push for immigration reform is getting major backing from dozens of top conservatives. they're calling legislation pending in the senate an important starting point. it comes -- this comes as a senate committee begins debating amendments to that legislation. vice president biden said overnight he's optimistic the entire bill can be wrapped up by the end of the summer. prince harry is coming to america but las vegas is not on itinerary. no, >>six-day visit will begin in washington today. he will tour an eibit on land mine clearance. the cause close to his mother's heart and visit wounded troops at walter reed hospital. harry will also visit denver and finish up in connecticut. strong to severe storms threaten the middle of the nation. strong wind, tornadoes and hail all possible from texas to the great lakes. scattered showers in the heast of the west. something of a may heat wave heats the pacific northwest. seattle and portland ten degrees

analysts who think they will say investor and ceo confidence is up. the housing market is recovering, and interest rates are still at historic lows. the coca-cola company trying to get ahead of mike bloomberg. the soft drink giant is expanding distribution of its low calorie drinks, posting calorie counts on the front of all its products and halting advertising aimed at children under 12. critics have claimed that the company promotes obesity. wrigley's is pulling its new caffeinated chewing gum off the market and halting production for awhile. the move comes as the fda investigates the safety of foods that add caffeine, especially its effects on children and teens. one stick of wrigley's alert gum has the caffeine equivalent of about a half cup of coffee. a company in massachusetts will put the first flying cars on sale in less than two years. finally john's dream has come true. the car is part sedan, part private jet, two seats, four wheels and wings that fold up so it can be driven but comes

shooting deaths yet, but they did answer a domestic violence call from the family's home last month. it is believed that miller may be driving a gold-colored pickup truck. the first congressional hearing into the boston marathon bombing gets under way today. the city's police commissioner will be among those witnesses. meantime, we have learned that the widow of suspect tamerlan tsarnaev was now hired -- or has now hired a criminal defense attorney. and still no resolution to the issue of where to bury tsarnaev. cemeteries are refusing to accept his body. his parents are worried even if they have him cremated and returned to russia, that the russian government may seize the ashes. breaking overnight, the search for two passengers missing from the carnival cruise ship "spirit." the disappearance was discovered when the ship docked in sydney, australia, this morning. the passenrs are said to be a 30-year-old man and a 24-year-old woman. we don't yet know what country they're from. we will, of course, stay on this breaking story and bring you the very latest. and the troubled carnival ship "triumph" is back in the

ocean for the first time since the engine fire left passengers stranded for five days. the ship left alabama en route to the bahamas for more repairs. it's expected to be ready for passengers again next month. also at sea a dramatic rescue off of north carolina. a coast guard crew helpeds pull a 72-year-old british man from a sailboat into a basket dangling from a helicopter. the man said he had fallen down, hit his head and was unconscious for about seven hours. chaotic scene on a crowded honolulu street where a small helicopter came crashing down. the pilot was on a photography flight when the brand-new chopper lost power. she was forced to make a crash landing. amazingly, no one hurt in that incident. time for playoff update. highlights from the hardwood. we get those from espn. good morning. i'm jaymee sire with your "sportscenter" update. and we take you to the nba where the bulls and the heat were in game two of the eastern conference semifinals. first four, heat up two. james in transition

driving and finishing with the one-handed slam. under five seconds left in the first. lebron james again, splitting the defense and heat led 5-5 after one. dwyane wade got it going in the second quarter. the back door cut for the dunk and then the reverse layup. he had 15 points on 7 of 11 shooting.second q then the fourth quarter, heat up 91-56. and take a look at the bulls bench. joakim noah on the bench yelling at the ref. he would get caught. tempers still running high. taj gibson has a few words. he gets caught too as the heat win, 115-78.taj steph curry and the warriors getting ready for game two at the spurs. the first half was all about klay thompson. he gets it back and knocks down the three off the inbounds. he had 29 points in the first half. the spurs would come back. gary neal knocking down a three as the warriors up just 7.

rate. business as usual today. yesterday was quite a surprise when chief jordan announce the he would be stepping down as chief oakland's police department. the announcement came a week after a federal overseer issued a report critical of the department leadership but jordan said this has nothing to do with the report but is stepping down because of a health issue. >> i was never forced out. i was talking to my physician for quite some time. >> i hope you hear my true affection for the chief and best wishes. >> the mayor announced the temporary successor as a press conference yesterday, a veteran at the oakland police department. he is the interim chief and she will launch a national search for the new chief.
