"nightline" is next. thanks for watching. good night! tonight on "nightline," is this the face of evil? ariel castro, charged with operating a torture chamber in the heart of cleveland. tonight, new evidence from inside his private prison. could castro be sentenced to death? charles ramsey sharing new details about the rescue of amanda berry. he says his life will never be the same. >> that scream is etched in my head forever. >> and coming to america. prince harry has landed. tonight from a surprise visit with military mom, to wowing the women of capitol hill, harry's first trip to the states since his controversial vegas romp.

good evening. when ariel castro appeared in court today, he seemed meek, scared. he tried to hide his face in his collar. that image at odds with the monstrous fixture prosecutors are painting. tonight, we're learning about how castro allegedly kidnapped these three young women and why. we're also hearing how the young women lived, sometimes in chains, always in fear. but perhaps the most disturbing detail comes from the mother of one of the victims. and abc's david muir spoke with her directly. >> reporter: tonight the first glimpse of what an entire city now sees as the fas of unspeakable evil. ariel castro, now the one held captive, handcuffed in a blue

jump suit, charged with several counts of kidnapping and rape. while his alleged motives remain a mystery, the prosecutor did not hold back. >> this child kidnapper operated a torture chamber and private prison in the heart of our city. >> reporter: the prosecutor saying the law of ohio allows the death penalty if it's true he caused miscarriages in that house of horrors. >> i fully intend to seek charges for each and every act of sexual violence, rape, each day of kidnapping, every felonious assault, all his attempted murders, and each act of aggravated murder he committed by terminating pregnancies. >> reporter: those words delivered just 24 hours after the homecomings here, a decade in the making. we learned that inside that van gi in ta dejesus was overcome, overwhelmed by the crowd, but she hugged her mother, telling her you could do it. give them a thumb's up. and she did.

her mother helping her daughter. she's still that 14-year-old girl? >> in my heart, she is. >> reporter: so much lost time. >> yes. it's awesome, though. no matter how hard it is for me, it's awesome. >> reporter: you got her back. >> yes. that's the most important thing right now. >> reporter: and once inside, gina told her parent, she didn't want to sleep uptear upstairs i room like she had been forced to for a decade. >> she said i don't want to stay in her room. i said you don't have to anymore. so that's part of the process. part of her healing in knowing that she now can do what she wants. >> reporter: she said she doesn't want to stay in her room. >> reporter: the family is sleeping on inflatable mattresses in the living room, her wish granted. we also learned that gina's mother nancy knew ariel castro for years after growing up in the same community and that castro spoke to her on several occasions, even after he

daughter had disappeared. most recently this past year, asking her how are you doing? so you would see him and he would say how are you doing? >> yes. >> reporter: like nothing was wrong. >> yes. >> reporter: that's chilling. >> it is. >> reporter: all the while he had your daughter. >> yes. do you know how many times i've been through the streets? i passed by that street. two blocks and a half away from there. >> reporter: abc news has learned that inside the house on seymour avenue, the young women were locked up and chained in the basement early on in their cap pifty and removed upstairs in later years, divided into two rooms. gina and michele knight often in one bedroom, amanda berry and her daughter in another. the young women were warned there was an alarm system and it would go off if they tried to

escape. it's believed castro would bring home food and the young women would cook it. sometimes he would bring home mcdonald's. and then there's the little girl, amanda berry's daughter. we now learned she was never told the real names of the other women in that house, because of fear she might reveal those names in public. she was the only one castro would take out to a park and it's now believed to church as well. and now ariel's family and friends trying to make sense of a man they thought they knew. his own daughter arlene who was friends with one of the victims, gina. in fact, she was believed the last person to see her on that walk home from school. she once told america's most wanted -- >> my mom said no, that i can't go over to her house. and so i told her i couldn't. and she said okay, well, i'll talk to you later pep. >> reporter: now her father, the one accused of stealing her friend. when she spoke on "good morning america." >> what would you like to say to

gina, her family, and the other women now. >> i would like to say i'm absolutely so, so sorry. i really want to see you, gina. and i want you to meet my kids. i'm so sorry for everything. >> he never mentioned anything about it. the best actor in the world. >> reporter: and we're now hearing from ricky sanchez, a musician who played with castro, a long-time friend who said he visited the home too many times to count, offering this chilly detail. >> when i was about to leave, i try to open the door, i couldn't even because there was so many locks. i can't get out of here. could you please help me? i got it for you. then he opened it for me. >> he said he was there just last week and he met the little girl. >> he brought her by the hands. he introduce eder to me as her

granddaughter. she was shy. never spoke a word. >> reporter: his head buried, wondering what plays in the mind of a man accused of so much evil. abc station wews reporting on a letter found in his home, remorseful, saying he's a sex addict. >> he has no remorse in my view for the victims for his own family. he only has remorse for himself, because people who will do the depraved things that he has done or alleged to the done for the past ten years has not one caring or feeling bone in his body about humanity. >> reporter: his family now ruined by his alleged secrets. as three other families tonight celebrate their daughters, smiling again. >> they can smile, which is the most beautiful thing that they can actually smile now. >> reporter: and they are smiling? >> yes, they are. every second. every second.

>> there is no resume, no formula for heroism. so sometimes the most unlikely heroes step up. such was the case in cleveland. his name is charles ramsey. he is a dishwasher turned icon who has a special way with words as "nightline" anchor cynthia mcfadden learned firsthand. >> reporter: at the beginning of the week, charles ramsey was a guy who worked in the kitchen at the local hodges restaurant in cleveland. >> have you heard from them? >> yes, about every ten minutes. >> reporter: what are they saying? >> you crazy s.o.b. >> they must be real proud of you? >> so to speak. >> reporter: in fact, his co-workers had t-shirts made. >> the phone here is nonstop

ringing. they are doing t-shirts. there are people calling to donate money. there are women calling to ask him if he's married. >> reporter: he stopped in to get his paycheck, saw everyone. still got my job, right? >> of course you still have a job. looking forward to getting back to work. >> reporter: on monday afternoon, charles ramsey said when he heard a woman springing, he broke down the door to his neighbor ariel castro's home. the rest, as they say, is history. even the cleveland police chief weighed in. >> mr. ramsey does deserve a lot of credit. and he is the true key to this case. >> reporter: as did the mother of one of the rescues girls. >> it was awesome what he he did. he could have turned his back and he chose not to. he chose to help her. >> reporter: and they're not the only ones. >> where is she going? >> i looking at her right here. she calling you. she on the other phone. >> reporter: when he placed that call saying he needed to help a woman who was amanda berry.

he gave his cell phone number. it hasn't stopped ringing since. >> there are numbers in this phone that start off with 945, 65, 0000-something, something, something, hyphen. so i'm just guessing that's denmark. i ain't got no friends with no numbers with hyphens. i don't even have friends that could spell the word hyphen. >> reporter: message after message from around the world. praising him as a hero. >> so at 4:00, 10, 15th call, you're a hero, man. greetings from malaysia. what does that feel like, charlotte? >> that feels like the mobile company is going to charge me more than $50 million. i need to change that plan dramatically. >> reporter: a lot of people are calling you a hire roe. is that how you think of yourself? >> of course not, sugar.

i hear to do what to do. >> reporter: there's a reward for amanda berry's safe return. >> all you have to do is make it out to amanda berry. another reward, give that to gina dejesus. >> reporter: so you're not going to collect any money for this? >> if i could do this all over again and come out with the same happy ending, keep the money. >> reporter: there can be a dissenting voice raised over the past 24 hours. angel cadero who also lives on the street says it was he, not ramsey, who broke down the door. >> ramsey arrived after he was outside with the girl. but the truth of who arrived here, who crossed the street, who broke the door, it was me. >> reporter: ramsey says cadero's version is not true. he says cadero was the first to run over to ariel castro's house, but then he ran away.

in this exchange, he refers to cadero as the dminl cominican. >> i didn't recognize her. i saw a white girl. what's your problem? keep in mind the dominican, as i'm saying this, what's your problem runs back over there behind me. i was goinglooking across the s saying she needs to get out of there. he said i'm not getting involved in here. >> reporter: ramsey is the first to say he has not lived a perfect life. you have been in jail? >> you got that right, sugar. >> reporter: domestic violence. >> oh, yeah. >> reporter: what happened? >> i was [ bleep ] and she deserved better. >> reporter: you kept yourself out of trouble since 2003, though? >> oh, yeah, oh, yeah. oh, yeah, oh, yeah.
