thanks for staying with us tonight. don't talk to strapgers. it's a cardinal rule for any child who wanders away from their parents' gaze. but a world that once sbum da intimidated suddenly seems a lot like dress. the three young cleveland women lured into a stranger's car that shows you how easily abductions like those can happen. >> reporter: it's the first friday night in cleveland nearly a decade someone, somewhere isn't wondering where amanda berry, gina dejesus and michelle knight are. and the first friday that ariel castro is in jail for kidnapping.

tests prove that he is the father of the little girl. the main questions remained, how these three young women were picked up without anyone noticing. >> cleveland police detectives and now 15 fbi agents aggressively working this case. >> reporter: their disappearance captivated this community, flyers, rallies, vigils. this reporter covered the kid p kidnappings from day one and was right there when the young women finally made it home. [ applause ] >> there's one thing on the tree that just gets me. the yellow ribbon with her missing photo. her mom said that was the hardest thing to look at it every time. >> how did it captivate the entire city here? >> well, i think, again, to see two teenage girls go missing

from the same general area right away just gave you chills. >> reporter: it was right here, 106th and lorraine on cleveland's west side back in 2002 when michelle knight was standing at this intersection and ariel castro allegedly offered her a ride. she got into the car and vanished. and four blocks away, amanda berry was here at this burger king when ariel castro allegedly asked her if she wanted a ride home. she got into the car with him. and it was here, just one block away from where michelle disappeared that gina dejesus was standing when ariel castro allegedly offered her a ride home. all three girls abducted within five blocks of each other. >> you know, for people who are not familiar with the area where they disappeared from, is that a friendly area? is that the area you kind of trust the epeople you're around? >> it's a busy area. so clearly, this wasn't a grab somebody and go.

this was, you know, do you and it breaks my heart how he tricked them. you know? because you could -- you could just picture it, you know? you could picture they must have trusted something about him to get into a car, especially poor gina, knowing he's the dad of a friend, that he drives a school bus in the area. >> reporter: abductions like these are all too common. teenagers are often the easiest targets and predators know it. >> hi, girls. my name is bob. how are you? >> good. >> abc news did its own hidden camera experiments back in 2006 to see how often a teen will get into a car in a predator. >> ladies, can i speak to you for a minute? this is a safety expert posing as a police officer. within 60 seconds, these teens will get in the car without asking a question. >> are you walking that way?

>> yeah. >> stand over there, we're making arrests right in front of that vanover there. the teens do exactly what he asked. >> the police dog is out. stand right here. if you see a german shepherd come up this street, jump in this car. >> just in, school over real fast. >> i can't believe this. >> her mom is watching her daughter kaitlyn in a nearby van and she is stunned than in less than a minute, her 14-year-old daughter has just climbed into this stranger's car. >> i can't believe it. >> kaitlyn, actually, this is not really a police incident and your mom is right up here in this van. this is for abc news. >> that's not funny. >> no it's not. >> try to be as honest as you can. what did you really think? >> i didn't think you were a cop. >> that's good. why did you go with me?

>> i don't know. >> reporter: what is it that makes this teen do everything she was taught not to do. >> if you don't know what to do, you're going to do what i tell you to do. i had you all the way in the car. >> reporter: police believe ariel castro lured all three of his victims into the car. next, bob plays a would-be kidnapper setting himself up as the hero. he lets the air out of this 1-year-old's stier when she's in the mall shopping. she doesn't even notice she's got a flat tire. >> you've got a flat tire. you've got a flat tire right here. he's using the good samaritan ploy where he appears to be the guy who's come to save the day. >> you want to use this? it will pump it up in about two minutes. >> thank you so much. >> no problem. i'm going to put it back here. my lighter it will work in, yours it won't. >> before she even thinks about it, she will get into his car. >> there's two lighter slots.

either one should work. and the keys, you may have to put the key in and turn the ignition. try just the lighter first. and tell me when it's in. >> it's in. >> bob now has his next victim. >> had i been a real predator, i would have gotten right behind you and i would have just moved you over. we would be out of this lot in just a matter of seconds. >> i was thinking the whole time, i shouldn't get in. but you did. >> that's the important thing. why do you think you did? >> because i didn't know what el to do. >> good news, half the teens we approached did not get into the stranger's car. >> i don't think so. >> you don't think so? >> i don't want to. >> no. >> but what's frooiightening ho many of them did, just like what happened here in cleveland. >> it's happened right in front of our nose.

this guy was a school bus driver. his daughter was in the same class as gina. it's all tragic, but we talk about stranger danger all the time. it's so frightening that these are people that a lot of people know as neighbors, as friends. >> tonight, the infamous house on seymour street is being boarded up, covered up this time to protect evidence that can be used to prosecute ariel castro, not to hide the secret horrors that amanda berry, gina dejesus and michelle knight endured behind these bawl walls. i'm alex perez in cleveland. coming up next, terrifying stories from two more ohio teens in a different town turned sex slaves. reality of life after begins. >> ma'am, where are you? >> i don't know! downing, downing, downing! >> downing? >> yes, yes! >> reporter: in 2005, she and her first cousin were rescued from their abduction in a dramatic 91 1 coup. >> she's upstairs. she's uptears. my niece is in the house! i need the cops. >> ma'am. >> reporter: we met the cousins in 2008 and disguised them in wigs for their own protection. their story began when they took a walk to the corner for a milk shake and a man and woman offered him a ride. >> i thought i knew the guy. i stupidly did it. they said we're going to get you some chinese food. i'm like okay. i started getting, like -- >> reporter: there would be no chinese food. no milk shake. the cousins were taken against their will to this house and held prisoner.

terrified, the girls were separated by two women who call themselves envy and cashmere. >> envy takes me down stairs and cashmere takes my cousin upstairs. she explained to me, you know, what i had to do, that i had to sleep with men for, like, money and stuff. >> did she use the word prostitute? >> yeah. she's like, you'll be a prostitute for daddy, what she called him. and she said you have to call him daddy, you know? >> daddy? you can't even look at his picture. >> no. >> reporter: he also goes by the machiavel machiavelli, after the legendary master of manipulation. the cousins were forced into a world where sex was bought and

sold. how long before you have to sleep with somebody for money? >> it was the next day that all four of us went to a hotel. the guy was going to pick one of us and he picked me. >> oral sex? vaginal sex? after nearly two weebs of being trafficked around the midwest, including at a truck stop, back in toledo comes that 911 call. >> ma'am, where are you? >> i don't know what's the name of the street? >> down, downing, downing. >> the nightmare over, the memories remained. sharon has spent years recovering. there have been troubles with the law, shoplifting and jail time. and depression, post traumatic stress. >> some days i just don't know how i'm going to get through this and i pray and say get me

through this day. i can't do it myself. >> reporter: she has two children now, and tonight, she has some hard earned words of wisdom for the survivors in cleveland. just beginning their long road to recovery. >> i know they don't want to talk about it because it's embarrassing what you've done. but it's not your fault. i just want to say that. no matter what happened, even if you were brain wshed to think you wanted to do it. you didn't want to do it and it's not your fault. but you need counseling, you need professional help and there's nothing wrong with that. use your support system, your family. it gets better, it does. >> for nightline, i'm sign thee yeah mcfadden in new york. >> those arrested in that ring served prison time and are free tonight. >> how the world's most famous sailing race turned into a scene of death and destruction. ♪ [ lighter flicking ]
