>> good morning, everyone. it's 6:00 a.m. on saturday. i'm katie marzullo. here's a quick look at the weather. good morning, lisa. >> hi, katie. the sun coming up in just a few minutes. plenty of low clouds and fog. we are clear in our inland valleys. temperatures are in the 50s. a little bits warmer this morning. that will be the trend throughout the afternoon. it's 50 half moon bay and the visibilities have been reduced newspaper the north bay with about a half-mile and also along the central coast anywhere from a quarter to a half-mile from

watsonville to salinas. by about noontime we will clear out in downtown san francisco, but we aren't going to say good-bye to the clouds all together. we will have a few higher clouds throughout the bay and inland areas and the low clouds handling shoreline, keeping the temperatures just in the 50s there. so a wide range of temperatures with numbers in the upper 70s near oakland, with about 90 out toward brentwood and antioch. we will talk about the rest of the ticks for the south bay and the north bay and what's going to happen for mother's day. that's coming up in a few minutes. katie. >> thank you. we are following breaking news in antioch this hour. police are on the scene of a deadly shooting. it happened near buchanan road and barcelona circle just after 9:00 last night. kira klapper is live at the scene. >> katie, police tell me that the officers who fired the shots are concord police officers. they did kill the man they shot. no officers were injured in the shooting. as you can see behind me,

concord police and antioch police are still investigating because we are within the city limits of antioch. multiple cars are involved. they are still being scoped out for all sorts of information related to the shooting. this is all as a result of the shooting that happened just after 9:00 last night. we have video from the scene. you see concord and antioch police and they are putting down markers where multiple shell casings fell from multiple gunshots nine hours later, here we are and they remain overnight still investigating. i'm told there are these multiple agencies involved because concord police fired the shots, but it happened within antioch. it is protocol in any officer-involved shootings for the district attorney's office to take over the investigation. investigators tell me they do expect to be here in antioch for several more hours. again, buchanan road between mission and about two blocks

over is still closed. they expect to be here for a few more hours and after that they are headed to a home where they also need to investigate. reporting live in antioch, kira klapper, abc7 news. kira, thank you. a shooting in oakland is developing news this morning. police need help identifying the man who was found shot numerous times near a bus stop. it happened at 61st street and add line last night. police responded to reports of gunshots and found the man had been hit several times. he's at a local hospital now, last reported in grave condition. more than a dozen shell casings were found at the scene and police say bullets hit a nearby liquor store, some parked cars and a home but nobody else was injured. >> america's cup practice is on hold this morning. the america's cup training accident that killed a british olympic medalist is calling into question whether the risk of these cutting edge catamarans is too great and if the race itself should be called off. heather ishimaru reports. >> boats from the san francisco

police department's marine unit are docked at fisherman's war of. after the chase boat the police boat was the first to respond. the coast guard and fair department arrived soon a we asked the coast guard if the accident has changed their thinking about emergency response planning for the race. >> i think at this point it's just too early to tell. we really need to wait until all the investigations are completed so we can know exactly what happened. >> some say it's a dangerous sport and the sailors accept the risk, but that was before the 36-year-old olympic medalist, husband and father dade. -- died. andrew is a correspondent who is writing about how technology is changing sailing. >> these boats go faster, they are designed to be as light as possible. they will break. that was always part of the plan. the problem is do they go too fast and are they too big? >> the team artemis and oracle

boats is a new high-tech class of boats. they can foil or fly above water. in fact, the sail is called a wing. the sailing world saw in them the chance to lose the stuffy image for a more tv friendly exciting event. three years ago they were warned against the america's cup going with the new untested boats. >> it's a beautiful sports. it's got -- it's eloquent, and i don't think you need to push the technology side to gain more fans. >> nothing is off the table. we will look at what happens through the review process. >> at this point there has been no timeline announced for the review and investigation. in san francisco, heather ishimaru, abc7 news. >> police are investigating a physical confrontation between a san francisco health inspector and a restaurant owner. we will have that story that a

minute. we will start with the video you are looking at right now, this is about a high school where the principal is apologizing after wrongly accuse ago freshman of sign better bullying in front of hundreds of other students during an anti-bullying assembly. larry smith made accusation in front of the freshmen class on may 3rd saying the male student circulated an inappropriate photo of a female student on social media. when it was determined the student had done nothing wrong, the print practical held with the families of both students and held another assembly to apologize. he was out of the office yesterday and the district is not saying if he has been disciplined. now police are investigating a physical confrontation between a san francisco health inspect sore and a restaurant owner. it happened yesterday at noon at a restaurant under construction at taylor and jackson. the inspector told police he was slapped by the restaurant's owner. police sighted the owner for misdemeanor battery, but the

owner is saying he wasn't even there. the san francisco department of health says they have seen an increase in aggression against inspectors. knew this morning, occupy the farm protesters plan to move into land on albany owned by u.c. berkeley to plant organic crops today. they previously occupied the school's gill tract which led to several members being arrested. a planned supermarket dome at the site was approved by the city but it fell apart when whole foods decided to pull out of the deal. now there are plans for a smaller sprouts farmer's market at the site. occupy the farm wants the land reserved for urban farming. the university said it will not allow a permanent encampment and it will do what is necessary to protect property rights. this morning oakland has its third police chief in four days. anthony torrebeo was named interim chief thursday after one stepped down. deputy sean went will serve as

the new interim chief. he was previously in charge of the department's internal affairs unit. torrebeo has assumed the range of captain. officials say his decision to step aside is voluntary. lisa argen is keeping an eye on the forecast which is one thing now and it will be something different later. >> absolutely. we have the clouds behind us and they have overspread the bay. oakland is cloudy with 57 degrees. here's a look at emeryville. kind of mild there but upper 40s and fog in the north bay. it will be warmer today but it's foggy for most right now. and you are clear in the inland east bay. that's where you will warm up dig. we will talk about it coming up. >> speaking of weather, take a look at this amazing video. found out what city got pounded with baseball-size hail. and gun owners facing long waits for bullets. what happens when police officers can't get theirs. an abc7 news

from the coast. lisa argen will map it all out for you coming up in her full weather in just a little bit. >> a third woman held captive in a cleveland house is back at home this morning. michelle knight was the first of the three kidnapped in 2002. she left the hospital last yesterday afternoon. in a statement released on her behalf the hospital says she's in good spirits and grateful for the outpouring of gifts. also dna tests confirm that the suspect in the kidnappings, ariel castro, fathered amanda berry's six-year-old daughter. the abductions are still a shock to the suspect's neighbors. >> i can't believe it still. i'm very happy -- let me get that out. i'm very happy and excited for the girls. >> prosecutors say they may seek the death penalty against the 52-year-old castro. he's being held on $8 million bail and is currently on suicide watch. abc news reports massachusetts investigators now have mounting evidence that the

boston marathon bombers suspectsmay have been involved in a triple homicide. the murders took place on september 11, 2011 in a town west of boston. three men were found in a home with their throats slit and their bodies covered with marijuana. one victim was a former boxing partner of tamerlan tsarnaev, and officials tell abc news they have forensic evidence connecting tsarnaev and his brother dzhokhar to the crime. tamerlan was killed in a shootout after the bombings and has been buried at this islamic cemetery in rural virginia. as you well know, boston area cemeteries refused to accept his bodies and now people in virginia are complaining that they were not consulted. right now there is a nationwide ammunition shortage and it's not just hunters and recreational shooters impacted. your local police department may be paying more and waiting longer to get ammunition to train its officers. as abc7 news anchor eric thomas reports, some departments of

-- are trying to stretch their supplies with items you might have in your own home. [gunshots] >> some police officers take their weapons to the range to qualify three or four times a year. but richmond police ltd. louie, has his officers shoot monthly. he buys the department's ammo, which can now take twelve to nine months to get. >> we are having to alter our training to a certain degree in order to maintain the skill level that we expect of officers and that the community expects out of us. >> and the increase in prices was sudden and jarring after last fall's presidential election. he said a few years ago he could get this duty ammo for 200 bucks a case. now it's $800 or $900 a case. practice ammunition prices are also through the roof so his officers are doing more training without ammo. >> we will do five to ten repetitions without any ammunition. so they get the mechanics down and then we will get several

repetitions with live fire. >> the department is also making more use of what some of us may think of as toys. officers use this air soft pistol, just like the one you can buy in any sporting goods store, to learn to draw and shoot quickly. this one helps them to put the weapon on target. the training done this way shows no loss of skills. >> because we are trying to train smarter, the actual effectiveness is as high or even a little higher. >> he spends a lot of time on the internet looking for bargains and for now the department has just enough. but for the recreational shooter there are still shortages, some of it doing to panic buying after obama was re-elected. >> the fear i think drove people to say i have to get it now before it's gone. >> kevin anderson is president of the united sportsman shooting range in concord.

they try to sell ammo at 10% over cost when they can find it. some competitors charge three times as much. but it means limiting customers to two box as day. they both hope things will calm down over the next few months. eric thomas, abc7 news. >> some remarkable new weather video out of texas. take a look and listen to this. all right. we will get back to the hail in just a minute. this is just as exciting. this is actually a live picture from outerspace of nasa astronauts conducting a space watch. two crewmembers working to try to bring the craft to full power. they have to mix an ammonia leak in order to do that. in this view that you are looking at right now is actually electric one of the astronaut's helmet cams. how incredible is this. a live look from outerspace. this last minute kind of hastily planned walk to fix the leak officially began at 5:44 this morning our time, and it's

expected to last until about noon. one of the station's solar powered electrical systems has been shut down because of leaking pneumonia, and the astronauts are trying to fix the leak during the spacewalk. we are told it is a serious situation, but not necessarily a dangerous one. however, unplanned kind of last-minute spacewalks like this, nasa says, are especially risky. they are outside the space station working to fix an ammonia leak as we speak. they should be doing it until about noon today. we will keep you posted on it as the morning goes on. so incredible to watch. more incredible video, now to the hailstorm in texas. >> not just any hail, hail as big as baseballs pelted the antonio area yesterday afternoon. a resident reported this incredible video of the

hailstorm has it passed over her backyard. several residents living nearby said it caused major problems, major damage, shattering windows k in homes and in cars. how could it not. it's like the sky is falling. >> busy insurance companies today. >> no kidding. as usual, we are counting our blessings here. >> yeah, very stable atmosphere and a good indicator that the low clouds and fog of that spread over the bay in most areas, concord and livermore are clear. dense fog down along the central coast from watsonville and salinas. visibility an issue in the north bay where it has been reduced around santa rosa. most neighborhood are a little warmer this morning. low clouds and fog will be banked up along the coast today. it will be kind of gray at our coast. take a look at the marine layer. this is our sutro camera. we will enjoy plenty of sunshine today. mid-and upper 50s are the numbers throughout most east and south bay neighborhoods.

even our coast at 50 right now. 57 in oakland leading the pack. and mountain view 57 and 54 in san francisco. we are looking at the low cloud deck here from emeryville. this will burn back before the noon hour. i think 10:00, 11:00 parts of the east bay. you will be left with the mostly sunny sky. 53 around the delta. very little in the way of a sea breeze today here. so some of our warmest numbers out toward antioch and brentwood. 55 in union city, as well as fremont with los gatos coming in at 53. so the forecast highlights allowing for the low clouds and fog this morning. then burning back across the bay quicker. we will look for sunny and mild conditions for most, but getting warm inland and cool right at our beaches and for mother's day very little change. so if you like it a little bit warmer with less of an onshore breeze, that's in the forecast for today and tomorrow. a mile-and-a-half visibility from half moon bay. less than that up in novato and santa rosa. be careful out there.

some morning bike riders or joggers and always use your low beams with that dense fog. so we are looking at higher pressure pushing this cloud deck, for the most part, to the north. but a few higher clouds will drift over the sky today. we will still call it mostly sunny. but at times the sky may be a little bit opaque. we will look for the numbers to warm quicker. so as a result, we are talking about these mid-90s from sacramento and chico, upper 90s in fresno. 80 los angeles this afternoon. 103 in palm springs. back home in the south bay look for lower 80s in milpitas. nice warm afternoon. 82 in cupertino. a little sun for santa cruz. it's 75. look for mid-70s menlo park and upper 50s with the clouds from half moon bay and pacifica. palo alto should warm to about 77. san francisco holding on to the cloud cover throughout much of the morning hours. then sunny, mid-60s to the upper 60s, depending on where you are downtown for the music

>> thank you. speaking of food, a medical emergency involving a seattle teenage prompting the caution about the use of wire brushes. ser is they are used to clean barbecue grills. exploratory surgery was performed on the teen after complaining of stomach pain for several days. during the surgery they spotted a piece of metal in his small intestine. turned out it was a wire bristle like that one you see there from a grill brush that came off and stuck to the chicken that he ate at a family barbecue. >> i have really bad luck just because of this one in a million chance happening to me, but good luck because they found it early and doctors put me into the o.r. and got it out. >> strange as it sounds, it happens. in fact, the center for disease control recently put out a warning about old barbecue brushes and the tiny metal bristles that rub off. >> coming up next, the inaugural bottle rock music festival. it's delighting fans in napa valley this weekend, but some

>> welcome back, it's 6:30 and we are starting this half-hour with a quick look at the weather. here's meet heat arrange. >> good morning. we have visibility in the north bay and at our coast. half-mile santa rosa and mile-and-a-half here. you see a mile-and-a-half half moon bay. elsewhere it is clear. concord and livermore. temperatures a little milder out in oakland with 57 right now. later on today most will be warmer, starting out with a the low clouds and fog except for the friends in the east bay where you are clear. around the bay today, 70 to 80. so numbers will feel warmer as that warmer air spreads across the bay. but not at our coast. upper 50s to near 60 with the clouds hanging there. inland talking temperatures near 80 to 90 today.

this will take us up above normal for the first part of the weekend. we have mother's day to end out the weekend. we will let you know how nice that will be and a look at cooler temperatures for next week. katie. >> lisa, thank you. we have breaking news in antioch right now. there's been an officer-involved shooting last night near buchanan road and barcelona circle but it was not an antioch police office who are fired the bullets. kira klapper is live at the scene. what's the latest out there? >> well, katie, as you said, the shooting happened here in antioch. it was actually a concord police office who are shot and killed the man. no officers were injured in the shooting. everything is still heavily still under investigation. multiple cars are being looked at right now and the road is still blocked off about nine hours after the shooting happened. let's get you to the video just after 9:00 last night. here in antioch, you can see concord and antioch police officers putting down markers

where there were shells from the gunshots the case is being handed over to the district attorney's office to take over the investigation because of the complexities of it being an officer-involved shooting. but again, with multiple agencies involved and so much still to uncover, i'm told that the road here, buchanan between mission and san jose drive in antioch will be closed for many more hours throughout the day today. police tell me that after this they are headed to a home where they also will be gathering evidence. reporting live in antioch, kira klapper, abc7 news. >> kira, thank you. construction workers at at&t park could soon walk off the job. union has called for a strike authorization vote today. nearly 800 employees who work for an outside company called center plate said they haven't had a raise in more than four years. if the workers approve the strike, management claims giants fans will not see any disruption in service on game day. u.c. berkeley graduation ceremonies begin this morning at 10:00. two political heavyweights are among the speakers.

u.s. attorney general eric holder will address the u.c. berkeley school of law commencement at the greek theaters, and protesters are expected to greet him for the detention of prisoners at guantanamo bay. here you see last year's commencement. next saturday, apple cofounder steve wozinak will be there as the keynote speaker and then grads will get a tiki note address from governor brown. imagine this, you have been named the u.c. berkeley's top graduating senior and you are only 18 years old. the medal winner has won more than 40 awards totaling more than $300,000. education reporter lyanne melendez has the story. >> congratulations. >> thank you. >> that's great news. >> ritankar das is one of cal's brightest seniors. as you would expect, his grade point average is high. >> it's 3.99.

>> and you did it in three years? >> that's right. >> he doubled majored in chemical biology and bioengineering, at 18 he's the youngest recipient of the medal. it's a prize hundreds of students qualify for as long as they have a near perfect gpa. here is one of his professors. >> a 4.0, just sort of crazy gpa at that point, but what matters afterwards is what actually they did with all the talents that they have. >> das was born in india. his family settled in milwaukee when he was only seven. the family moved to fremont just about as he was about to enter u.c. berkeley. while at cal he has won 40 academic and community service awards. two years ago he founded "see your future" an outreach program for all students, but especially those living in underserved communities. >> every young person can change the world.

but as a society we have to acknowledge that and we have to give them ways to show that. >> do you have time to date? >> yes, but it's not something i pursue. i love to play basketball, and i'm an outside shooter. >> das said he wants to focus on helping others less fortunate than him. >> how that is going to happen, i can't tell you. but as long as i find myself working on that, i'll be happy. >> at u.c. berkeley, lyanne melendez, abc7 news. >> we have breaking news from the white house this morning. the president and first family were not affected but the west wing of the white house had to be evacuated early this morning due to smoke from a faulty piece of equipment. it was around 4:00 this morning our time that smoke was seen coming out of a first floor closet in a mechanical room. journalists and others were made to evacuate the west wing. the secret service calls it an abundance of caution. the washington d.c. fire

department was called in to check on things and everyone was allowed back in after about an hour. well, wine country is rocking this weekend. it's the first-ever bottle rock festival. it's all about great music, wine and food at the fairgrounds in napa. while most folks love the idea, some are not so happy about the crowds and traffic it's bringing. abc news reporter laura anthony has the story. >> oh, my gosh. >> what could be better than a little gourmet food and wine and a lot of music? ♪ >> what's with the earplugs? >> it's loud. just trying to save my ears for the long run. i go to a lot of shows. but i can still hear it. it sounds great, but it's loud. >> earplugs are not the first ever bottle rock festival seems to be a hit. at least for those on the inside

of the bottle rock expo. >> let her rock, baby. ♪ >> when not grooving to the likes of frankie and the country line, there's plenty to eat and drink and the local winery figures this is a great showcase for their effort. >> yesterday was just a real rockin' day. a good crowd. expecting a bigger crowd today. very enthusiastic people and fantastic music. >> of course, the napa valley is also known for its restaurants. >> there is a good variety of local restaurants here, and i think it will bring people in from out of town. >> some of the neighbors have set up shop in their front yards. >> i like what they are doing here. >> others, though, not festival haters, say the five-day affair has created some hardships for them. >> it's like you asked for it, you said, okay, your buddies talked you into it, you went in and did it and it hurt like heck and you have to live with it. >> that neighbor and others will

have to live with this for a couple more days. the festival runs through sunday night. tonight and tomorrow night are nearly sold out. besides offering good music, good food, good wine, organizers are hoping also to raise about $1 million for 20 local charities. in napa, laura anthony, abc7 news. >> thousands of cat lovers will be in the east bay today for the first ever oakland cat festival. ice a video cat festival. dusty the kitty will be there. this real life cat burglary became nationally known in 2011 for stealing objects in his san mateo neighborhood and dusty's owner said he's still at it. >> he's still trying to bring things back. he goes out at night and looks around. but the most of -- most of the things he brings back now are rubber bands. he can't seem to find got stuff -- the good stuff anymore. >> if you would like to see

odds are you have parked at a broken parking meter and have come back to find a ticket on your car. it's expensive and it's usually not your fault. capitol correspondent nannette miranda reports on a move to protect you and your wallet. >> she is frustrated. after finally finding a spot that allows her to find a spot for four hours, the meter won't let her pay for any more time than 48 minutes. >> i'm going to a doctor's appointment right now, and the event should take more than 1 1/2 hours and this meter has stopped at 48 minutes. now i could get penalized. >> california law already allows drivers to park at broken meters, but local cities are passing their own ordinances, giving the authority to ticket. it varies widely, but it is

definitely a cash cow. one legislator wants to take the local authority away and allow drivers to park at a broken meter for the maximum time posted. >> if the cities want to get the money from the parking meters, they should get it the correct way, by making sure they stay in good repair and making sure motorists can pay. >> his own district, los angeles, issued more than 17,000 tickets at broken meters in one year. opponents like the california public parking organization say local jurisdictions develop their own policy when is it comes to broken meters and pay stations. they want those decisions to stay local. >> if i find a broken meter i figure it's fair game. >> she's standing by with quarters because she knows how ticket happy meter readers can be. consumer groups have noted there's no incentives for cities to fix meter when a fix-it ticket gets them more money. >> fix the meters and i'll pay but if you are going to sit there and get $52 instead of a dollar, that's wrong. >> she decided to take a chance and go to the doctor's
