>> katie: very good morning. i'm katie marzullo. it's 8:00 a.m. on this saturday. let's start with a quick first look at the weather. here is lisa argen. good morning. good morning. you can see the fog behind you. as a result we are looking at half mile visibility, santa rosa three-quarters around santa rosa and around the coast two miles. in oakland, rest of the afternoon we're going to feature more sunshine and warmer temperatures. numbers today will be as much as 5-10 degrees warmer than yesterday. that will put you anywhere from

70 to 80 degrees around the bay. the coast upper 50s to near 60. inland east bay will warm up to 90 around antioch and brentwood. livermore sudden should see the upper 80s. tomorrow will be fairly similar and talk about mother's day and cooler week ahead. >> katie: we're following breaking news in antioch. neighbors waking up to learn that a concord police officer shot and killed someone. it happened buchanan road last night. keira joins us live at the scene. you talked to the witness. >> reporter: i did the shooting happened right outside the window, the home she shares with three young daughters. he heard a rattling off of gunshots and saw a man lying in the middle of the street. we have video from right after the shooting about 9:00 last

night. police have confirmed that it was in fact concord police who shot and killed the man. you can see concord and antioch police working together and counting shell casings and placing markers late last night. witness said he saw a man run from a pickup truck right before he was shot. take a listen. >> i got up and looked out the wi. i saw the guy run out and i told my kids get down. i heard gunshots. i heard like seven gunshots. it felt like the bullets kept coming closer and closer. i came back to the window and the guy was laid out right there >> reporter: again, we're nearing the 12-hour mark since the shooting. they are still piecing together the chain of events. there are several cars that were involved in the shooting.

still here. the road remains closed between mission and san jose drive. they will be here for few more hours into the afternoon. then after that they tell me they are going to a nearby home where they will continue their investigation. reporting live, the "abc 7 news". >> katie: a shooting in oakland is developing news this morning. police need help in identifying a man that was shot numerous times near a bus stop. it happened on 61st street. police responded and found a man hit several times. the man is in grave condition this morning. more than a dozen shell casings were found at the scene and bullets hit a nearby liquor store and a home. america's cup practice so hold this morning. the training accident that killed a british person is

questioning the risk of the race may be too great. heather ishimaru reports. >> boats from the san francisco police department's marine unit are docked at admonisher man wharf. the police boat was first to respond. we asked the coastguard if the accident has changed their thinking about emergency response planning for the race. >> i think at this point it's too early to tell. we really need to wait until all the investigations are completed so we can know exactly what happened. >> some say it's a dangerous sport and sailors accept the risk but that was before 34-year-old andrew simpson, husband and father died. adam fischer is a correspondent who has been writing about how technology is changing sailing. >> the boats go faster. they are designed to be as light as possible. they will race but the problem

accusing a freshman of cyberbullying in front of hundreds of students. they report principal larry smith made the accusation in front of the freshmen class on may 1st saying the male first circulated a photo of female student. when was determined the student hadn't done anything wrong, he held another assembly to apologize for his mistake. he was out of the office and district would not tell us if he has been disciplined. >> police are investigating a physical confrontation between a san francisco health inspector and a restaurant owner. it happened yesterday at noon at a restaurant under construction at taylor and jackson. inspector told police he was -- they cited the owner for misdemeanor battery but he says he wasn't even there. the san francisco department of health saying they have increase

in aggression against inspectors. >> new this morning, protestors plan to occupy to move to land owned by u.c. berkeley to plant organic crops today. several members were arrested. that was to protest a planned super development at the site which was approved by the city but fell apart when whole foods decided to pull out of the deal. now there are plans for a smaller sprouts farmer market at the site. occupy the farm wants the land preserved for urban farming. the university says it will not allow a permanent encampment and will do what is necessary to protect its property rights. this morning, oakland has its third police chief in four days. anthony teribio was named on wednesday after chief howard jordan's unexpected departure stepped down yesterday morning.

>> katie: welcome back. so glad you are with us this morning. this is a live look from our exploratorium camera. that is the bay bridge you are looking at. pretty gray out there but we are going to see some sun later on today and it should warm up into mid and upper 60s. >> developing news from the white house this morning, the president and first family were not affected but the west wing of the white house had to be evacuated earlier this morning due to smoke from a faulty transformer.

it was around 4:00 this morning that smoke was seeing coming out of first floor closet. journalists were cleared from the west wing. secret service it was out of an abundance of caution. the fire department were called in and everybody was allowed back in about an hour later. a third woman held captive in a cleveland house is back at home this morning. michelle knight was the first of the three kidnapped in 2002. she was last to leave hospital yesterday afternoon. in a statement released on of her behalf. hospital says she is good spirits and grateful for the outpouring of gifts. dna tests confirm that ariel castro fathered one of the victim's berry's six-year-old daughter. >> i just can't really put it together still. i'm very happy and excited fore.

>> katie: prosecutors may can see the death penalty against the 50-year-old castro. he is beg held on $8 million bail. right now there is nationwide ammunition shortage. it's not just hunters and recreational shooters who are impacted. your local police department may be paying more and waiting longer to train its officers as eric thomas reports. some departments are trying to stretch their supplies with items you may have in your own home. >> reporter: some police officers take their weapons to the range to qualify three or four times a year. richmond police lieutenant has his officers shoot monthly. he buys the department's ammo which can now take nine to 12 months to get. >> we have to alter our training to maintain the skill level we expect of officers. as the community expects out of us. >> reporter: the increase in

prices was sudden and jarring. a few years ago he could get this ammo for $200 a case. now it's $800 or $900. practice ammunition prices are also through the roof. so his officers are doing more training without ammo. >> we'll do five to ten repetitions without any ammunition. they get the mechanics down. >> reporter: the department is making more use some of us may think of as toys. officers use this air pistol just like the one you can buy in any sporting store to learn how to draw and shoot quickly. this uses a laser to put the weapon on target. >> because we're trying to train smarter. actual effectiveness is as high or better. >> he spends a lot of time on internet looking for bargains. the departme has jus recreationr

there are still shortages, some of it due to panic buying after president obama was re-elected. >> the fear of luaz and regulations, people say hey, i need to get it now before it is gone. >> they try to smel sell ammo at 10% over cost. some competitors charge three times as much but limited availability means limiting customers to two boxes per day. they hope things will calm down over the next few months. >> katie: two crew members of the international space station are walking in space right now to try to bring the craft up to full power. we have live pictures but how amazing is this. this is actually the helmet cam of one of the astronauts. this is live on nasatv they are looking to repair an ammonia leak.

this walk started this morning and expected to last until noon. one of the station's solar systems has been shut down because of leaking ammonia. they are trying to fix that leak during this spacewalk. it's the 21st spacewalk by the u.s. last minute unplanned spacewalks > tucked away in los altosisky.> hills. they are trying to repop late endangered birds. in this assignment 7 report. dan ashley has your ticket in. >> walking into the i have a ear they are greeted with a chorus of hoops and coos.

they are surrounded by hills but this isn't just a bird sanctuary it is also michelle's home. >> we have two versions of how we got our name. first one is our official version is that pandemonium is but weed the name. >> michelle started her flock in 197wh7 she stopped to rescue an injured dove. >> i went over there and i picked it up and took to it vet. >> word spread quickly she was willing to help out injured or abandoned birds. >> they started coming. >> her countless rescues led to pandemonium i have a year. they maintain the facilities. >> this is this area because i say to my husband.

this is the last one. it's confusing. we have nine. >> they still care for the sick and injured animals they initially took in. they no longer accept rescued birds. >> today they are one of the largest bird sanctuaries in the united states. the facility is home to more than 360 birds and 70 endangered species. >> what we have here is this. we have more than any other conservation group. >> they are actively engaged in breeding several endangered species including the blue crown and victoria pigeons. >> dotto bird was a pigeon. >> maintaining this and caring

back to the week ahead. 60 in fairfield. you are going for 30 degrees of warming. 56 in livermore as well as union city. 54 in los gatos. a little bit of fog in the north bay but low cloud deck will continue to erode as it is compressed. sunny and mild throughout the afternoon. we are looking for warmer weekend today and tomorrow with mother's day featuring temperatures a little bit warmer than today. today we're coming up with us. half moon bay, santa rosa and higher pressure will continue to press down and compress the marine layer. we will have higher pressure built in the eastern pacific and golden state. sea breeze not really reaching far inland. we'll look at temperatures pretty warm from east bay valleys to central valleys. higher clouds from time to time

today and a little sunnier tomorrow will allow the temperatures to come up just a bit. here are the numbers statewide and notice how warm it will be. 98 in fresno, upper 60s in monterey and partial sunshine at the coast. it will be as much as 8-10 degrees warmer here today for our friends in the santa clara valley. 83 in san jose with upper 80s in morgan hill. upper 70s in redwood city. mid and upper 50s from half moon bay and pacifica. you venture to the eastern side of the city, highs from mid and upper 60s. sunny conditions. 82 in santa rosa. napa will be about 80 waiting for the fog to dissipated. 73 in oakland and 76 in newark. hayward, high of 80. look for 87 in pittsburg with 90

>> katie: medical emergency involving a apology teenager has a warning about website barbecue grills. during the procedure sure enough doctors spotted a piece of metal in his small intest tin and it turned out wire bristle from a grill brush that came off and stuck to the chicken that he ate at a family barbecue. >> just one in a million chance

>> katie: welcome back. it's 8:30 and we're starting with a quick look at the weather. here a lisa argen. >> good morning to you. here is a look at lake tahoe. 49 degrees. they are going for a high in the low 70s. should be another beautiful day there. no rain over the past couple of days. 56 in livermore and 57 in union city. it's a little warmer around the bay but we are waiting for the fog to burn back across the bay. it's been sunny in the east bay. warmer temperatures as much as 5-10 degrees warming. south bay is staying cool at the coast. how highs nice it will be for mother's day for mother's day.

connecticut school where one of the deadliest school shootings played out is a step closer to being demolished. late last night a committee in newtown, connecticut voted in favor of tearing down sandy hook elementary school and building a new school in its place. the state and federal government is expected to cover the $45 million cost of building a new school where the shooting rampage took the lives of 26 students and teachers. the planning director calls the decision opening the door to a healing. concession workers at at&t park could soon walk off the job. union has called for a strike authorization vote today voting begin about 30 minutes ago. 800 employees that worked for an outside company said they haven't had a raise in more than

four years. in if the workers do approve the strike, managers claim that giants fans will not see a disruption on service on game day. >> u.c. berkeley graduation ceremonies begin this morning at 10:00 and continue through next monday and some big name speakers are expected to address the graduates. eric holder will speak for the u.c. berkeley school of law at the greek theater today. protestors are expected to greet him over the detention of prisoners at guantanamo bay. this is video of last year's commencement. next saturday steve wozniak will be a speaker and following monday, there will be a address by governor brown. >> imagine this, you have been just named as berkeley's top graduating senior and you are only 18 years old. the winner has won more than 40 awards totaling more than $300,000.

it's frustrating and it's expensive and usually not your fault. nannette miranda on the move to protect you and your wallet. she is frustrated after finding a spot that allows her to park for four hours, the meter won't let her pay for any more time than 48 minutes. >> i have to go to a doctor's appointment right now. it shouldn't take one hour or one schaf and 38 minutes i could get penalized. >> it allows you to park at broken meters but they are passing their own ordinances togd and ticket. they are definitely a cash cow. an assemblyman wants to that i can taik local authority away and allow drivers to park there for the maximum amount of time. >> if they want the money from the parking meters they should get it correct way. sure they sd

live from emeryville, back at oakland, you got the maze and no traffic trouble on saturday morning. gray clouds as you might also expect. not the case everywhere and it is going to change. lisa argen is in with a look at your forecast. we'll get some sun, right? >> it's going to spread all across the bay and some parts of the coast is coast we'll see some sunshine. live doppler picking up the high cloud cover to the north and west of us. low clouds banked up along the shoreline. with the cloud cover, upper 50s at some of our beaches but manage a couple 60s and mid 70s down around santa cruz. here is a look at foggy golden gate bridge where temperatures have been mainly in the mid and upper 50s around the bay. 50 half moon bay. 59 in san jose with sunshine. 54 in san francisco. still gray here and mountain view at 57. a look at sutro camera and mount

diablo where temperatures have been in the mid and upper 50s in east bay valleys. it's been sunny all morning long. fairfield looking at very weak sea breeze and temperatures right now at 60 going for a high of 90. 51 with fog in santa rosa. hayward in the upper 50s. highlights, low clouds this morning for most of you but sunny and warmer today for everyone, five to ten degrees of warming. few degrees warmer on mother's day. two to three degrees in some spots around the bay. here look at visibility. from three-quarters of a mile at our coast. to just about a mile santa rosa. it's been improving in novato. you'll notice clear conditions looking good in inland east bay. we're beginning to clear out in the south bay. we will have a mostly sunny sky. at we go through the rest. afternoon. high clouds and from time to time we will have the

bay. it will allow for temperatures to continue to warm but maybe not quite as sunny with a few high clouds visiting here and there. it won't be all day. we are featuring warmer temperatures especially in the south bay with 82 in santa clara. 87 in los gatos. 75 returning for santa cruz. numbers here on the peninsula will be warmer. 76 in redwood city. down in the hills, 80s and 60s around the coast. south city a few peeks of sun. 82 in sonoma and santa rosa. music festival in napa, around 80. nice afternoon. near east bay low 70s. weak sea breeze in oakland but you head further east, union city and castro valley, upper 70s. warming continues down through fremont and inland east bay with mid-80s for walnut creek.

pleasanton, 88 and look at 90 for antioch and brentwood. we'll be looking at temperatures with a wide range today. if you are headed to the giants game, look for partly cloudy conditions. mid 60s at about 1:00 and temperatures just a few degrees cooler at 4:00. accu-weather seven-day forecast we're talking about temperatures in the upper 50s to near 90 inland. then a cooling trend with breezy conditions with a stronger onshore flow. that includes each and every day next week. >> just in time for mother's day. take your mom out for a picnic. >> sure. >> katie: in sports, tomorrow afternoon the pressure will be on the warriors to even their playoff series against the spurs here is sports director larry beil with the highlights. >> good morning. there is a reason the spurs have
