>> good morning, everyone. happy mother's day. thanks nor joining us on this sunday, may 12th. i'm carolyn tyler. let's start with a quick first look at the weather with lisa argen. >> good morning. here's the view from mt. tam. once again the marine layer is pretty shallow where we have it. it is creating a little built of fog and low visibility in the north bay. san francisco in the mid-50s.

mountain view upper good morning half moon bay, 52 for you. so the fog will clear quickly this morning by about 9:00, 10:00. we will be left with cool conditions at the coast. numbers near 60 degrees. some mid-and upper 70s around the bay and the warmest weather once again our inland east bay and down through the southern salinas valley. we are talking about temperatures into the 90s. if you like the warmth, enjoy it today. the sea breeze kicks up this afternoon. that will be a significant element in our cool down for the week ahead. we will talk about that a little later. carolyn. >> thank you, lisa. >> developing news. the foothills town of valley springs is in shock this morning after the investigation of the death of leila fowler has led to her brother's arrest. he's just 12 years old, accused of stabbing her to death. the calaveras county sheriff announced the arrest three weeks after the boy told authorities he saw an intruder in the family's home.

abc7 news reporter john alston has details on this stunning development. >> calaveras county can sleep a little better. stunning news outside of the office. only two hours earlier his deputies arrter of leila fowler. >> at a 5:10 p.m. detectives arrested leila's 12-year-old brother at the vacley springs substation and on charges of homicide. >> several days after the killing, leila's 12-year-old brother, now the accused killer, joined family members at a vigil. we are blurring his face because he is a minor. more than 1,000 people gathered at jenny lind elementary school where leila was a third grader. her mother spoke briefly to the crowd. >> i just want to thank the community for the overly amount of support you have given my family. it will never be forgotten. the 8-year-old girl was stabbed

inside the hom her brother told investigators he encountered a tall man with long, gray hair who then ran off. authorities say they collected dna at the scene, collected household knives and searched a nearby pond for evidence. it put the entire community in a state of fear as authorities conducted a door-to-door manhunt that gradually tapered off. a neighbor who claimed seeing a man run away from the fowler home later recanted the story. >> we have put in over 2,000 hours into this investigation to provide leila fowler's family with answers in her death. >> the sheriff did not address some obvious questions, such as a motive or whether the weapon has been found. he says the investigation is not over yet. john alston, abc7 news. the brother cannot be charged as an adult because he's under 14 years old. legal analyst jim hammer tells us the process will be private. >> the focus in juvenile court is going to be on figuring out

who this kid is, what is his family situation like, is he appropriate to be in the family setting or taken out of the family setting, either foster care or some kind of custodial setting. but the focus is on how to rehabilitate this kid at 12-year-old. radically different than an adult criminal proceeding. stay with abc7 news as we continue to follow this story. you can also find breaking news updates on our facebook page and our twitter feed. abc7 news bay area. developing news, another northern california manhunt is expanding with federal agents and four swat teams joining the search for a wanted killer in humboldt county. authorities believe 45-year-old shane miller killed his wife and two young daughters tuesday night in shasta county. he has prior convictions for drugs, weapons and a parole violation. he is considered armed and dangerous. there's been no sign of him since wednesday night when his pickup truck was found abandoned near the town of petrolea.

these photos show federal and state s.w.a.t. teams from three departments heading out to conduct search operations in the thick backwoods. haywood police are investigating what caused a crash that injured two people and damaged a house last night on mannon avenue. two people are seriously injured after an accident that closed the road between ranker place and schaefer road. two to three cars was smashed, a house was damaged in the accident. we will let you know just what happened as soon as retails are -- details are released later this morning. disappointment in vallejo as little league players learned games were cancelled because of yet another shooting near one of their fields. it's the second time shots were fired near the ballpark. that happened yesterday. abc7 news reporter lisa has more. >> sebastian kern should be

pitching against the giants. instead he's practicing with his eight-year-old brother. it's because north vallejo little league has cancelled all of their saturday games. >> it's getting kind of frequent. for the second time in three weeks gunshots have been fired near one of the games. this 12-year-old heard the gunshots that rang out thursday. police say someone in one car fired into another car at around 6:00 p.m. no one from the league was involved or hurt. >> to have someone just be as callous as that, and to not think about the lives that they are putting in danger is just incomprehensible. >> but this isn't the first time young players have been near gunfire. on april 17th shots were fired after a tee-ballgame at john williams field. no one was hurt then either but the league briefly suspended the season. games resumed a few days later. >> the first one i wasn't so

angry but i was more angry at the second one. >> both of her boys play in the league. >> mainly sad. started wondering if i was going to let them play. >> she's decided only to let them play in games she can attend. explaining that to these boys isn't easy. what do you want to do? >> i would rather play. i would rather be playing right now, i guess. >> starting monday games will be played at dan foley park. league officials are sure their players will be safer here. league officials are also calling on city leaders to make the neighborhood around williams and thurman fields a priority. they say more officers are needed now. in vallejo, abc7 news. developing news, a lake county neighborhood is sinking into a hilltop. it's happening in a neighborhood in lake port. that's a city on the west side of clear lake. as abc news reporter cla

sandell reports, homes of that have been standing for 30 years are now falling apart. >> in this neighborhood in the northern california town of lake port, the hillside underneath is collapsing, taking with it trees, streets and homes. >> the whole subdivision may have to move out. >> mike and jenna were warned to empty the home they lived in for 16 years and get out. >> we love it up here. we've always loved it up here. it just is devastating because all of this has happened within two months. we're just -- we are trying to stay optimistic. >> the entire subdivision of 29 homes is in danger. this house dangling on the edge. the floor swallowed up. >> you look at the slope of the driveway. that home was sitting up above there. >> engineers are desperately trying to find out why the hillside has become so unstable but so far there is no smoking gun. it's not the first time this landslide earlier this year on

>> welcome back, everyone. a meeting is scheduled for tuesday with the teams in the america's cup to discuss thursday's tragedy on san francisco's bay. teams from the u.s., italy, sweden and new zealand will be in san francisco this week. they will decide what steps, if any, to take in the wake of that catamaran accident that killed a british medalist.

andruw simpson. the skipper's father tells a newspaper his son heard a sharp crack moments before the boat tumble forward. the "newcastle harold" reports the racing yacht folded like a taco shell, according to crewmembers. one enthusiasts believes the cup will go on. >> i don't think anything will deter us from hosting, let alone attending, any of the events. there's more public awareness now that an accident has occurred. salo lore andruw bart simpson died after being trapped beneath the wreckage for ten minutes. a tour in california kicks off today with this year's course starting in southern california and heading north. the eight-day, 750-mile race ends in santa rosa, bringing the climax of the race to our region. cycling fans say the bay area stages should determine this

year's winner from among the world's elite cyclists. individual time trials come to san jose friday with a grueling climb to the top of 3800-foot mount diablo next saturday. those trials are expected to draw tens of thousands of fans to san jose and have the cycling world's attention for a full day. the final scenic stage runs from san francisco to santa rosa. concession workers at at&t park have authorized a strike. they voted at the ballpark yesterday. they want their first raise in three years. now the vote doesn't mean a walkout is imminent. there are negotiations between the union and management wednesday and thursday. management calls yesterday's vote unfortunate. three young women are savoring freedom in cleveland this weekend. new video shows their moment of freedom last week. at the same time new questions

are being raised about the investigations into their abductions. chuck sievertson has the latest. >> they marched in honor of michelle knight, amanda berry and gina dejesus. the three cleveland women will celebrate mother's day in freedom for the first time in a long time. for the first time we see the moment of liberation, police officers knocking down the front door of their prison and amanda berry hugging her daughter moments after she was freed after help from the neighbor charles ramsay. a moment relived by a police officer who investigated their disappearance for a decade. >> it was a surreal experience hugging them and talking to them. >> that jubilation is tempered by some. some say he saw her right before they were kidnapped. >> i thought it was weird, but i didn't think anything was wrong

some parts of the bay area. we will pick up the low fog clouds part of the morning hours but otherwise it will be warm again. inland east bay and dry in the hills. we have the steady onshore flow. in fact it will be kicking up throughout the afternoon, bringing a cooling sea breeze. in fact that's what is on tap for much of the upcoming work week. here's a look right now at the quiet conditions. we aren't expecting any rain in the week ahead. mt. tam this morning you see the fog and breeze. 54 in san francisco, as well as oakland. good morning half moon bay. san jose at 56. a look from our sutro camera where the sun was up just about 15 minutes ago. a beautiful shot at the low clouds and fog. that will dissipate and we will look for the john show flow not to return until the early afternoon hours. pretty strong, though. it will be cool once again. in the 50s at the coast, 56 livermore, 53 union city, los gatos in the low 50s. the forecast highlights calling for partly cloudy skies this

morning. less this the way of fog than we had yesterday morning. we will burn back quicker. that will mean more sunshine by about 9:00. a cool coast, warm inland. so that 30-degree temperature span on tap once again. we will look for cooler conditions tomorrow in advance of an area of low pressure. a weak weather system but that will provide a generous west wind off the motion and across the bay all week long. this morning we are cooler. santa rosa, novato and napa with visibility reduced to about half a mile. about nothing up in novato with three miles at our coast. so be careful out there. we will look for more sunshine this afternoon in the warmest day of the week. that's today as high pressure continues its hold over the eastern pacific. but it's this system here. you can see it. a few high clouds drifting in from time to time this afternoon. this will allow for more sunshine, but still we will look for the warmest weather only in our inland east bay. everyone else will feel the sea

breeze. it should be comfortable out there. take a look inland. we have high fire danger southwest earn california. you see the reds here. we remain temperate with 65 monterey. low 80s cupertino, 82 sunnyvale.ula numbers, 50s at te coast, mid-7 0s san mateo. san francisco reaching the high temperature early on and then sea breeze, over 20 miles an hour at times. look to the north bay to warm into the mid-80s today. a few degrees of warming. 84 sonoma, 83 for vallejo and near east bay plenty of low and mid-70s. that's warmer yesterday. 69 in richmond yesterday. you head inland and you see the low 90s. very similar to yesterday with 92 pleasanton. here's the look ahead. notice 80s and 90s around the bay today, keeping the 50s at the coast. cooler tomorrow. breezy averages not only

>> welcome back, everyone. happy mother's day. let's start this half-hour with a quick look at the weather with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> heyward, carolyn, sunrise was a half-hour ago and you can see a few holes in the low clouds this morning. it is slightly shallower. we will get into some sunshine. it should be another nice day around the bay. getting warm inland, temperatures in the mid-50s for our inland east bay with the upper 40s. fog in the north bay with visibility down to nothing in novato. a quarter mile around santa rosa and a little bit, about three mile visibility at our coast.

later on today we will see numbers once again in the 70s and 80s around the bay with mostly sunny skies. a few high clouds, still keeping it cool at the coast with the fog pulling back. then the sea breeze kicking in after 1:00. upper 50s to the lower 60s. inland, here's where we are heating up. 80s and 90s. seasonal temperatures for the week ahead. i'll explain in a few minutes. carolyn. >> thank you, lisa. you know the golden state warriors playoff series against the san antonio spurs continues today at oracle arena. it's also known as roaracle arena once the crowd gets going. kira is joining us live from oakland. kira, the warriors really need that enthusiasm so they can try to even the series. >> they sure do, carolyn. and i know you will be one of the fans giving it to them. they will be down 2-1 in the semifinal series, and they need to tie it up today. well, it's not a need to tie it

up, but we definitely want them to be 2-2 instead of 3-1. take a look at the video of the last game, game three, when the warriors lost to the spurs 101-92. like i said, today is not a must-win in game four, but the warriors head back to san antonioor for game five and it would be very good to be tied at 2-2 rather than down 3-1. for game four today, gates at oracle arena open at 10:00 this morning. doors to the actual arena open at 10:30. tipoff at 12:30 but coverage starts at noon right here on abc7. get this, if there is a game six, tickets already go on sale tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. to the public, at 9:00 a.m. for season ticket holders in an exclusive presale. then that game six will be thursday, may 16th right back here at home. of course, you have to wait to see if we get to a game six and then the nba will determine tip off time. reporting live, abc7 news.

the nba finance committee meets by phone tomorrow to discuss that, with a final discussion expected wednesday when the nba board of directors meets in dallas. o.j. simpson will be back in a las vegas courtroom tomorrow seeking to reverse the conviction in the 2008 armed robbery of sports memorabilia dealers. simpson claims his lawyers were incompetent and he should get a new trial. legal experts call it a hail mary final appeal as he tries to avoid what amounts to a life sentence for the 65 year old. he was sentenced to 33 years in prison. he must serve at least nine years, meaning he would not be eligible for parole until he's 70. silicon valley is famous for start-ups launched in garages. hewlett-packard and apple to name the most prominent ones. now some young men are using their garage to build a satellite and launch it into space.

jonathan bloom pays a visit to the teen behind sky cube. >> hunched over a small table in a cluttered garage they are feverishly working toward a tight deadline. >> they are replacing the batteries. these ones are not charged and we are not sure they hold enough charge for us. >> there are countless variables in play. >> what bothers me is the radio shifted mode. >> and they have only one chance to get it right. >> we are building a cube set. it's a satellite that will launch into orbit in october of 2013. >> this science project will blast off an rocket and fly high above the earth. it's powered by sun, packs a tiny radio and three cameras. >> you will be able to request a picture of the earth and the next time the satellite goes over this part of the earth it will take a picture and send it back to your phone. >> he's an app developer and a space nerd. when his app last time did so well he quit his day job and

decided to go where no one has gone before. >> it's about doing something only big governments could do. >> tim rounded up a team and created sky cube. the tiny satellite will orbit the earth sending pack tweets and pictures for people willing to pay a dollar for the privilege. >> this is code for "high world" so that's what i'm transmitting right now. >> they had to build a lot of things themselves like the solar panel that they built from scraps to save tens of thousands of dollars. >> we had to pick the best ones. >> he pieced together the little leftover solar cell triangles that cost a mere $1.50 each and when the satellite a deployed the panels unfold to charge the batteries and reveal the cameras. then comes the tricky part. >> the physics come later when it's tumbling through space and we have to predict the tumble but we can't do that until it is up there.

>> the team will have to write the code to take the perfect picture and then they have to get the pictures back. >> cost about $40. pretty cheap. >> he showed us what they build to listen to the satellite. thanks to a deal with the navy, they can post all their transmig toss the internet. but all good things must come to an end, including this one. >> this is the grand tie -- finale. >> after the six month term in space the giant satellite will pop out this giant paw loan. it will trying it out of orbit and send it hurdling back into the atmosphere and that's when you might catch a glimpse of it as a fast moving star in the night sky. >> if you are a kid who contributed, that's a wild moment at the end of the thing. >> the end is only the beginning. they raised $117,000 on kick starter, enough to build a second saltalamacchia. >> if this works and we pull it off, it won't be the aft satellite we will do but we will talk about that one when the time comes. >> jonathan bloom, abc7 news.

>> there is a move in sacramento to penalize companies who cut back on workers hours to avoid providing them health insurance next year when health insurance laws kick in. abc7 capitol correspondent nannette miranda reports on the benefits and the potential risks of closing the so-called wal-mart loophole. >> my hours are being cut. >> with her schedule being reduced, full time retail associate barbara couldn't afford to buy her own healthcare anymore so she enrolled her son in a government program. >> he's on med-i-cal and i will have to enroll myself. >> critics say that's a growing trend. beginning next year the federal

affordable care act requires employers to provide coverage to anyone work more than 30 hours or more a week. to avoid the mandate, hours are reduced. it's forcing many low wage workers to go on taxpayer paid state programs like med-i-cal. >> i don't think that's right. >> jimmy gomez has a measure, a proposal to close out anyone who is trying to take advantage of the so-called wal-mart loophole. the money will go to med-i-cal. if the problem isn't fixed, he estimates the taxpayers will have to pick up the tab of over 400,000 californians. >> if it grows, it will agrees out all other programs. education, public safety, you name the program, it will be squeezed out. >> company deny hours are being reduced to circumvent the law. opponents, including wal-mart, are teaming up to fight the proposed penalty. they say there's already a federal penalty in place and the state fine could be up to six times that or up to $15,000 per employee.

or -- >> you know, we are looking at a differential between the warm air above and the cooler ocean air. >> i knew you had the answer. >> a short answer. with that difference we are looking at, you know, the atmosphere trying to equal itself out and that creates a sea breeze in the afternoon. that will get going after about 1:00 today. so you will feel that certainly, but this morning we are talking about low clouds and fog widespread in the north bay and just patchy in san francisco. we saw 90s yesterday from gilroy to morgan hill. concord airport at 91. a few records around the lake tahoe airport, upper 70s to upper 80s some spots. we have the sea breeze with the west winds and the water, temperature only in the 50s. so the air coming off of the water there allowing for that cool effect of the sea breeze. take a look right now. isn't this a nice shot from mt. tam where you can see the sea breeze -- not the sea breeze,

>> with nearly 100,000 military members serving in iraq and afghanistan, there are a lot of moms that won't see their kids this mother's day. to show them support, a group in san jose hosted their adopt a military mom for mother's day luncheon yesterday. it included food, gifts and special guest speakers. organizers say it's important to recognize that going to war affects not just the troops, but their families back here at home. the event was paid for by people and businesses. very nice event there. a lot of moms getting out today. what will the weather be like?
