orleans. but the fbi is calling that mother's day shooting not far from the french quarter street violence and not an act of terrorism. >> 19 people were hurt, 3 of them seriously. the mayor is calling on witnesses to help solve the crime. here's abc's linzie janis. >> reporter: marchers in new orleans rushed to help victims of a mass shooting. a gunman opened fire on the mother's day parade, wounding at least 12 people. police say a 10-year-old girl grazed by a bullet is among the injured. >> innocent people was hurt. half of them didn't even know they were shot. you know? it was amazing on mother's day, they had kids to be involved in this. >> reporter: they say up to four people are in surgery. their conditions not yet known. somehow, no one was killed. >> it appears these two or three people, just for a reason unknown to us, started shooting at, towards, or in the crowd. it was over in just a couple of seconds. >> reporter: the shooting occurred at the corner of frenchman and villery.

in the city's seventh ward. the victims were part of a second line parade, a group of people following the actual parade's brass marching band. a celebration of mothers turned into a nightmare. linzie janis, abc news, new york. >> we'll stay on top of that story throughout the morning. now to cleveland. ariel castro's brothers are speaking out for the first time. onil and pedro castro say they would have called police if they knew what was going on in their brother's home. they're now hiding out, unable to go home because of death threats. >> we're seeing new pictures this morning. from the first moment the young women found their freedom. here's abc's devin dwyer. >> reporter: caught on camera, police rushed to the scene on seymour street one week ago. >> police detectives, ambulances, came out of in where. >> reporter: inside, officers found gina dejesus and michele knight, held captive for a decade.

amanda berry, who first escaped and called 911, clutched her 6-year-old daughter in the street as they looked on. >> she kept holding the cop with her daughter like this. she kept telling them, keep me safe. keep me protected. >> reporter: ariel castro, the alleged rapist and kidnapper, is now behind bars. his brothers, initially thought to be accomplices, have been cleared. they spoke for the first time since their arrest to cnn. >> i could never think of doing anything like that. if i knew, i would have reported it, brother or no brother. >> reporter: the victims are speaking out, thanking their rescuers in the community in statements through their attorney. i just want time now to be with my family. says dejesus. knight writes, i'm happy, healthy, and safe. berry says i'm so happy to be home with my family. none of the women plan to speak publicly until the criminal case against castro is over. >> give them the time, the space, and the privacy, so that they can continue to get stronger. >> reporter: donations for the women have been pouring in from

around the world. nearly $100,000 so far. officials hope the new trust funds will help the women rebuild their lives. diana? >> devin dwyer, thank you. a couple of stories likely to get attention in washington this week. beginning with the investigation of last year's deadly attack on a u.s. facility in benghazi, libya. the top hour republican looking into the attacks says he's going to request depositions today from the authors of a scathing report about it. that report absolved then secretary of state hillary clinton. senator john mccain spoke bluntly yesterday on abc's "this week." >> i would call it a coverup. a coverup in the extent there was willful removal of information which was obvious. it was obvious. >> mccain referring to exclusive reporting from abc news. our report last week showed the state department was involved in editing the cia's talking points about benghazi in the days after the attack. four americans were killed including ambassador chris stevens.

and there's more outrage than usual directed at the irs this morning after its targeted of the tea party. the agency is apologizing for heightened scrutiny of certain groups during last year's elections. it is blaming three lower level employees. a report coming out this week claims senior irs officials knew about the targeting as early as 2011. several congressional committees are promising to investigate. the united states and south korea have begun joint naval exercises despite objections from the north. the trillions got under way this morning with an american strike group led by the "uss nimitz." the strike group has guided missile destroyers and a missile cruiser. exercises could push the peninsula to the brink of war, says north korea. minnesota takes another step toward legalizing gay marriage this week. minnesota's how approved a

bill to legalize gay marriage last week. the governor says he would sign it. that would make minnesota the 12th state to allow gave gay marriages. the major announcement here this morning on abc. this one's a big one. after a lifetime of ground-breaking interviews, legendary journalist barbara walters is stepping down. >> barbara made her mark posing tough questions to everyone, from pop stars to politicians. as marci gonzalez reports, the trail that she's blazed has been for generations. >> reporter: abc news legend barbara walters is retiring. walters will make the announcement monday on "the view." she'll continue how "the view" and abc news specials throughout the next year and will retire in the summer of 2014. barbara walters has arguably interviewed more statesmen and stars than any other journalist in history, including every american president and first lady since richard nixon. >> are you sorry you didn't burn the tapes? >> yes, i think so. >> reporter: through the years, she's interviewed countless world figures, including fidel castro, moammar gadhafi, and saddam hussein.

in december, she conducted an exclusive interview with syria's embattled president, bashar al assad. in 1999, the first interview with monica lewinsky. the highest rated news program ever broadcast by a single network. walters is the creator and co-host of abc's daytime show, "the view." she hosted "20/20" for 25 years. she joined abc news in 1976 as the first woman to co-host a network news program. marci gonzalez, abc news, new york. >> her resume is unbelievable. >> we still get her for another year. not retiring until the summer of 2014. she'll still stay on as the executive producer. so we might see glimpses of at least her spirit through the show. >> absolutely right. what a pioneer. >> that's true. we're going to have much more on barbara's plans on "good morning america." and tune in later on this morning to hear from barbara on "the view." time now for weather across the nation. a quiet start to the work week for most of us. there's going to be some much-needed rain in the pacific

it's already a strong start to the week for the stock markets.

stocks in japan soared overnight. the nikkei rocketed to a high. it's riding a wave that started last week. when it gained 7%. despite the news, dow futures were down overnight. still, it opens at an all-time high. gaining 145 points last week alone. in bangladesh, the government planning to raise the minimum wage for garment workers. as the death toll from last month's factory collapse tops 1100 workers. they're paid as little at $38 a month. they're clearing the way for workers to form unions. chrysler has announced a major recall including nearly 500,000 jeep cherokees and jeep commanders. built between 2005 and 2010. cracks in a circuit board can cause the suvs to shift into gear without warning. the problem is being blamed for at least 26 crashes. at the box office, it was the superhero versus the great gatsby. that superhero, of course, was

robert downey jr.'s iron man. "iron man 3" taking over the top spot. "the great gatsby" surprisingly strong. "pain & gain" a far distant third. nbc's announced its latest succession plan. overnight, they announced that seth myers will now be getting his own show. he'll take over "late night" when jimmy fallon moves to "the tonight show" next year. if you're looking to improve your love life, listen up. a new survey says you should take a vacation. 88% of us are likely to be intimate with a partner or spouse while taking a vacation. but get this. the survey finds that of all places, atlantic city, new jersey, is the current top spot for intimate vacations. >> not far from the big apple. how about that. >> there you go. when we come back, people that live in minnesota see a lot of extreme weather. nothing quite like this. there's a lake creeping onshore. it's very strange. a solid wall of ice. also ahead, o.j. simpson says he wants a second chance.

the ice was blown off the lake right on to the land like a tsunami. property oewners were shocked. >> bang, the ice came right through the living room here. he said, grab your purse, grab whatever you can, get the keys. we go the get out of here. i saw the ice just coming. just moving so quickly. >> and it was a similar scene hundreds of miles away in minnesota. where gusty winds pushed ice ashore there as well. from the middle of the lake. you can hear it move towards the homes. yards filled up with ice. up to three feet. the good news, much warmer temperatures are on tap today for the area. people in a small northern california town say they're in shock after hearing that a 12-year-old boy has been arrested if the stabbing death of his sister. 8-year-old leila fowler's body was found in her house.

her brother was the only one home at the time. he had claimed an intruder broke in. now he's charged with murder. >> i can't imagine what his mom or his step mom are going through. a terrible tragedy. >> investigators refused to reveal the evidence that led to the arrest of the 12-year-old. o.j. simpson is back in court today. he's accusing his former attorney of botching his case, he's trying to get the convictions thrown out. he wants a new trial. he's serving a 33-year prison sentence following a confrontation with sports memorabilia dealers. prince harry returns to the east coast today following a weekend in the rockies. he hit the field with air force players yesterday. he went long there, hauled in a pass, not bad. all fun and games, as he got down to helping the cheerleaders form a pyramid. tomorrow, he source areas of new

we have the san mateo bridge from hayward to foster city with a c.h.p. issued high win advisory so anyone driving any profile -- high profile, be careful. the bay bridge has three lanes blocked until 6:00 a.m. and in oakland, one lane is blocked until 5:30, and the coolidge off-and-on ramp are shut down until 5:30. >> from pennsylvania, six people including four children have been killed in a house fire. the flames tore through the house overnight two miles northwest of philadelphia. firefighters say the floors and roof collapsed. four children between two and eight were killed along with two adults. another person was not home at the time. in word on a cause but details are slowly coming into the

newsroom. we will follow the story with more at the top of the hour. >> counselors. staff the school in valley springs after the arrest of levee's orlando brother in the 8-year-old girl's mother. abc7 news reporter cornell bernard joins with the latest. >> it is a stunning town of events in the killing of leila fowler. police days ago looked for a suspect described only as man with long gray hair. the manhundred is over and leila fowler's brother is charged. a memorial remains outside the valley springs home where leila fowler was found murdered on april 27. her killing set off an intense manhunt cross calaveras county. her brother told police he was home at the time when he saw an intruder run from the house but authorities never found that suspect. days later, he joined the family at a vigil. we obscure his face because he is a juvenile. the boy was arrested
