i'm diana perez. john muller is off this morning. they're picking up the pieces today in north texas after those deadly twisters. six people are confirmed dead, and several others are still unaccounted for, and now more dangerous weather is threatening the area. abc's devin dwyer is joining us with more. good morning, devin. >> reporter: hey, good morning, diana. we're hearing some incredible stories of survival after that monster storm shattered what had been a relatively quiet spring of severe weather. the texas tornado struck with a vengeance. >> oh, my gosh. >> reporter: and this is what they left in their wake. block after block of devastating destruction. >> there's supposed to be houses right here and on this corner and further down there, and there's nothing. >> reporter: this morning the cleanup remains a monumental task. neighbors helping neighbors pick up the pieces. survivors counting their blessings. dylan grisham hid in a bathroom with his grandma and made it out alive. >> the door like just like shaking, shaking, shaking really bad.

>> reporter: the town of granbury, 40 miles southwest of ft. worth, paid the biggest price, battered by an ef-4 tornado, one of the strongest, with winds up to 200 miles an hour. officials said at least least six residents, four men and two women, were killed. >> all those six people, just total tragedy. i'm amazed that there wasn't more. >> reporter: today a mission of search and recovery continues as rescuers try to account for the missing. they vow to leave no piece of debris unturned. >> we need to make sure we give all those families that are missing people the chance at closures. >> reporter: closure will be a long road for survivors who endured the first major outbreak of twisters in the u.s. this year. now, the hood county sheriff says six or seven people are still missing this morning. two neighborhoods in granbury remain closed while rescuers continue to comb through the debris, diana. >> all right, devin dwyer for us this morning. thank you. and now to the scandal over the irs' targeting of the tea party groups. we'll hear from the former acting commissioner of the irs,

steven miller, today when he testifies at a congressional hearing about that targeting and a second irs official has also been forced to resign in the wake of this scandal. in washington yesterday tea party activists gathered promising to sue the irs. a man from the former soviet republic of uzbekistan makes an appearance in federal court today after being arrested on terror charges. he was taken into custody at an apartment in boise, idaho, which federal agents combed for evidence. the 30-year-old man is accused of conspiring with a known terror group in his home country. prosecutors say he was also involved in a scheme to use a weapon of mass destruction. and abc news has learned the fbi has searched an apartment in manchester, new hampshire. it's the home of a former rebel leader from chechnya. the man admits to meeting with boston marathon bombing suspect tamerlan tsarnaev at least a month before the attack, but he says he was not involved. also, an official says the younger tsarnaev wrote anti-american rants on the side of a boat where he was hiding from police. they include referceto thestan.

a homeless hatchet-wielding hitchhiker who briefly enjoyed some internet fame has now been charged with murder. prosecutors in new jersey say caleb "kai" mcgillvary killed a 73-year-old lawyer who was found dead in his home this week. mcgillvary's youtube video was seen nearly 4 million times, and he even made an appearance on jimmy kimmel's show. jurors in the jodi arias sentencing trial cried during testimony from the victim's family. travis alexander's siblings described how their lives were torn apart when he was murdered. his younger brother steven told the jury he was hospitalized for ulcers, lost sleep and separated from his wife even. his sister broke down on the witness stand. >> travis was our strength, our constant beacon of hope, our motivation. his presence has been ripped from our lives. >> jodi arias is expected to

speak to jurors when the trial resumes on monday. more than a half a million dollars worth of gold arrived at the miami airport earlier this week, and then it simply disappeared. a box containing the gold came in on an american airlines flight from ecuador, but somehow in the unloading, the box vanished. police are now poring over airport surveillance tapes to figure out what happened. heroic is truly the only way to describe the actions of a group of good samaritans in this next story. this is dash cam video from the scene of a crash in new mexico. an 8-year-old girl becomes trapped underneath the suv. see them running there. the officer who responded to the crash starts to flag down everyone, anyone who would help. luckily several people did, and that group was able to lift the vehicle, pull the little girl out and out to safety. she is expected to be okay. and now take a look at another car crash that could have ended so much worse than it did. surveillance cameras were rolling when a wrong way driver smashed through the front of a ft. lauderdale hotel and hit a parked car.

that impact sent that parked car plunging into the hotel pool. amazingly, nobody was in the parked car or in the pool, and luckily no one was injured. time now for the weather across the nation, and most of you will need your raincoats and umbrellas today. showers from virginia south to the gulf. severe storms with hail and possible tornadoes from new orleans north to the great lakes.ers in the pacific northwest. ideal mid-70 temperatures here in the northeast, but across the south it's going to be a hot one. high 90s around phoenix. nearly 100 degrees in pars of texas, and high 80s just about everywhere else. still to come, the jackpot jumps once again. the outrageous amount of this weekend's two giant lotteries. also ahead, the video of her baby tumbling on to the tracks made us all catch our breath. it still does. now hear from the mother. she reveals exactly what happened. but first american airlines is letting some passengers board early depending on what they're bringing on. we're going to explain coming up next. stay with us.

welcome back. bill gates is once again the richest person in the world. the microsoft co-founder's fortune is now valued at nearly 73 billion -- that's with a "b" -- dollars. gates recaptured the top spot from mexican billionaire carlos slim thanks to a recent hot streak from microsoft's soft which added a cool $10 billion to gates' coffers. well, it's been a roller coaster week for retail giant walmart. its stock shares hit a record high on wednesday, and then on thursday walmart posted surprisingly weaker than expected first quarter earnings.

the company blames the extra long winter for a slump in store sales. and after years of complaints, amtrs it will finaupgrade the speed and reliability of wi-fi service aboard its trains. but the speed will still be slower than what most people have at home given the technical challenges of maintaining a connection on a moving train. that makes sense. american airlines is trying something new in order to speed up the boarding process. passengers carrying a bag or a personal item that fits under the seat will be able to board first. that means fewer people stuck waiting for all those aisle blockers who stow baggages overhead. and it's a weekend for giant multistate lottery jackpots. tonight's megamillions lottery worth 190 million bucks but that, of course, pales in comparison to tomorrow night's powerball drawing. that jackpot now stands at $550 million. both jackpots go -- could go even higher by the time of the drawings. that 550 million, that's the

yesterday afternoon. the sky grew dark as it was hit with torrential rain, powerful winds. a hotel and several homes damaged, trees and power lines came crashing down and thousands without electricity. more of the same for louisiana on the roadways this morning. driving almost everywhere in the southeast is going to be a little tricky thanks to hail, heavy winds and possible tornadoes once again. also, plan on wet roadways from st. louis to the great lakes and west into the dakotas and if you're flying, airport delays are possible in memphis, minneapolis, new orleans, chicago and charlotte. well, we're hearing for the first time from that philadelphia mother whose baby rolled on to subway tracks while trapped a stroller. this happened wednesday. the stroller, you're about to see it, falls on to the tracks at one of the elevated stations. so tough to watch. her 14-month-old daughter is doing fine. she says the stroller rolled away when she turned around to look at a clock. >> she's a lot better.

a lot better than it actually looks, so, yeah, i'm extremely happy and very much blessed. >> the stroller apparently rolled because that platform is slanted toward the tracks to allow rain to drain off. well, the hearing to determine whether o.j. simpson gets a new trial is expected to wrap up today, of course, with some fireworks. the lawyer that simpson accuses of misrepresentation in his armed robbery and kidnapping trial is set to testify and as brandi hitt reports, a possible surprise witness could take the stand. >> reporter: seconds after the last witness left the stand thursday, a new development was revealed in the o.j. simpson hearing. >> mr. simon is still vetting out the witness. >> reporter: a last-minute witness could take the stand. >> they're talking about potential witnesses that they object to. >> reporter: simpson's attorneys left the courthouse without speaking to reporters about who this witness is or what they may

reveal as simpson fights for a new trial for his 2008 armed robbery and kidnapping conviction. >> i didn't break into anybody's room. i didn't beat up anybody. the guys acknowledged it was my stuff. >> reporter: handcuffed to the stand the 65-year-old testified wednesday. his former lead attorney, yale galanter, mishandled his case and never revealed he advised simpson he had a legal right to confront to men to retrieve his own sports memorabilia. >> did you trust mr. galanter? >> yes. >> reporter: it was already expected to be high drama in court with galanter scheduled to testify. >> his reputation is on the line. >> reporter: simpson also games galanter never told him about a plea deal proposed by the prosecution. he has spent four years behind bars of a sentence that could last 33 years. >> he's got a pretty compelling case that he was not defended properly. so it'll be ultimately a credibility contest. >> reporter: the attorneys are meeting early this morning in
