>> good morning, everyone. i'm katie marzullo. here's a quick good look toe weather. here's lisa argen. >> good morning. we are starting out with patchy low fog and clouds. temperatures cool in napa. 46 santa rosa. we are clear in most areas. so we are looking at a warming trend getting underway for the weekend. let's take a look at oakland this morning. here's what to expect for the rest of the day. around the bay upper 670s to the mid-70s. should be very pleasant. coastside look at more sunshine, and inland we are warming up. yesterday was a cool afternoon. we are talking about an offshore flow tomorrow.

near 80 today inland. as much as five to eight degrees warmer tomorrow. that will bring us to above normal readings and high fire danger with maximum heat headed our way on monday. we will detail all of it for you coming up. >> lisa, thank you. san jose police are looking for a carjacker whose victim jumped out of the moving car. it happened yesterday at 4:30:00 in the morning at denny's on blossom hill road. >> reporter: these are two photos of the man police say attack a customer just as she arrived at the denny's restaurant. >> runs up to her driver's side door, force his way into the car and pushes her over and basically fleece. >> he sped down the road but the victim jumped out of the car going about 40 miles an hour. she was pretty banged up. road rash and sitting the ground from rolling. these are pretty significant injury. you can imagine the emotion natural fear that was done. >> she made it back to denny's

and called the police. one regular customer of the restaurant said he's surprised to hear it happened. >> my son walks from here to oak ridge all the time and i cut through here all the time. that's quite alarming to me. >> police say the man ditched the victim's vehicle in the neighborhood. suspect is described as about 28 to 25 years old, standing about 5'7", weighing in 150 pounds. anyone who knows this man should call san jose police. in san jose, sergio, abc7 news. >> police are investigating an incident in which officer shot a man in newark say say shot at him. this is the scene on macdonald avenue where investigators are gathering the evidence. family members called police around six last night. they were concerned about the man's mental state. and the fact he had several guns. while a police negotiator was

talking to the man from outside the house, officers heard several shots fired inside. police say the man then came out of the side shooting at officers. they returned fire, hitting him at least once. we now know the names of the two men shot to death on 880 in downtown oakland thursday night. relatives provided us this picture of terrence marks and christopher beardon taking during thursday night's warrors game hours before he side. beardon had season tickets and took marks as his guest. several bullets hit his porsche and they believe marks was targeted. they want to know if something at the game might have triggered the shing. they are reviewing take place from the game. and police want to know how a grenade came to be in a lead's garage. they let natured it last night. they blew it up last just

before six. a woman told police she found it in her garage yesterday afternoon. bomb experts weren't sure it was alive and they destroyed it just in case. they don't believe it was planted in the garage in an attempt to cause harm. members of occupy the farm plan to return to albany today to tend to the crops they planted on u. c. owned land. it's known as gil track. they detained people monday morning last week after they camped on the weekend. they were detained for 61 to hours without being charged. the university plowed over the crops but more was planted since then. protesters don't want a store on the site. they want it to remain at crop land. work has been suspended following the death of a long shore man.

sky 7hd was over the scene yesterday afternoon shortly after the unidentified employee drove his white pickup truck into san francisco bay. the man who had worked at the port for 47 years was helping direct the placement of containers when the accident happened. tens of thousands of trees are on the chopping block in the east bay. but this morning fastballs have a final chance to speak out about the project that will eliminate about 80,000 trees from the east bay hills. abc7 news reporter allen wong has the story. in one year this young eucalyptus tree can grow four to six feet. they have taken over the hills and now uy berkeley and regional parks have a plan to remove about 80,000 nonnative trees. >> they can burn explosion he havely, of they have a volatile compound in their leaves. their bark is known as candle bark because it ignites. >> okay bay and the regional parks want to thin out the

trees. >> fire risk mitigation program that preserve the tree canopy and preserves the understory. that, to us, is ideal. >> but u.c. berkeley wants to remove most of it's 22,000 eucalyptus and trees and restore native species like they did in the canyon. >> they are much lower trees. they don't have the same bark shedding characteristics. they put far less litter out per acre per year in terms of ground fuels. >> but opponents believe the native species are a greater fire threat. >> because all the trees have foliage at ground level they are ideal for propagating a fire. >> the federal emergency management agency is providing the money to cut down the trees and a final public meeting is schedule the at claremont oakland middle school. abc7 news. a southern california woman has been charged with bilking an

85-year-old man oust his life savings. the 25-year-old was arrested in a sting operation at a san jose hotel thursday night. prosecutors are calling her the sweetheart scammer. she tricked the man into marrying her, pretending to be an interior decorate tore needing money to run two hotels. the hotels don't exist. a record power ball jackpot is up for grabs tonight. an estimated $600 million. but along with your dreams of fabulous wealth there are things to consider before putting down two dollars for a ticket. sales are strong. >> inside liquor land on el camino and milbrae, people are playing power ball with the hopes of winning the $600 million jackpot. >> give to charity and family. i have family in third world countries. >> but before you go out dishes out your imaginary dough, they said to plan careful because

>> in southern california crews are battling the 575-acre wildfire in the mountains in los angeles. more than 100 firefighters are fighting the flames from the water and from the air after it broke out along a lake. at one point the flames came within 100 yards of a school, but firefighters say the school was never in danger because dry brush had been cleared to create defense i believe space. the fire is now 60 percent

contained. amtrak service has stopped between new york and boston indefinitely following a collision between two compute commuter trains in connecticut. 60 people were taken to the hospital. a train bound for new york derailed during rush hour and hit another train on the opposite track. the side of one train was shredded. >> all of a sudden we hear boom! and then we saw smoke everywhere. i was just focusing on my two kids, willing them and embracing them. >> people flew over, i almost flew over the seat but i held on. i'm okay. other people are hurt, though. >> the crash happened near fairfield about 60 miles outside of new york. the track sustained major damage. a south bay elementary school teacher has been arrested on sex charges. 41-year-old grant blair of cupertino teaches fourth and fifth grade at old orchard school in campbell. he was arrested by an internet task force, one of whom posed as

a 13-year-old girl online. he was picked up at a san jose park where he averaged a meeting for sexual activity. blair has worked at the campbell school for about a year. a huge loss for a school. dozens of stolen computers and along with them the year end projects from students. vic lee has the story you will only see on abc7 news. i was just like shocked. i was, naa, somebody would do this to such a nice school? >> the 13-year-old came to school thursday morning and saw the smashed windows of the eighth grade computer rooms. all the laptops were stolen during the night. two cards containing 40 computers were cleaned out. headmaster mr. jorganson said it looked like a professional job. >> they knew exactly where the computers were on the room and they seemed to get the computers

off the campus quickly without any commotion. >> the mac book pros were purchased last summer. now with school almost out administrators are scrambling. we are trying to figure out ways to make computers accessible to the eighth grade the next three weeks of school. >> what makes it crueler is all e graders graduating on to high school lost their year dects that they had bee work on for a long time. >> definitely time-consuming. i spent a lot of time researching it. >> cameron was doing his project on major figures of the 50s and 60s. i had mohamed ali and it was like a twelve-point power point presentation. >> the theft has taken not only a financial toll on the small, private school, it's also left an emotional scar in this close-knit community. kim reynolds is president of the parents service auxiliary. >> even the kindergartners were talking about it. it leaves a feeling of vulnerability and fear in our

kids. >> of course, the school is talking to security consultants like many schools this one had no alarm system. but they are looking at new technology. one of them is rather fascinating. this one will unable the laptop to take a picture of the thief if a stolen - is stolen. and technology will unable that picture to go back to a security control center via gps. but that, of course, is in the future. for now the school is hoping that police and the public will help them recover their stolen computers. vic lee, abc7 news. today's stage 7 in the ahgen tour of california is one of the most grueling day for the cyclists and will likely determine the winner of the entire race. the 92-mile course makes a loop from livermore starting at north livermore avenue and cromwell way. it finishes atop mound diablo. a climb of nearly 4,000 feet. yesterday in san jose riders left the starting line.

every men for individual time trials on a difficult, hilly course. today they will have to paddle up mt. diablo where some of the largest crowds in the history of the tour turned out. this year's course follows the same route as last year but adds an extra five miles to the actual summit. at the top on a clear day you can see for 200 miles. >> tomorrow morning the final lag of the race will start in san francisco and cross the golden gate bridge to santa rosa. also tomorrow the 102nd bay to breakers 12k race and that means street closers. you can get help navigating around the traffic with our awc7 waze traffic app. we are getting into high fire danger. always high fire danger but increases as the atmosphere degrees out. right now still a little bit of

offshore and getting gusty tomorrow night into monday. that brings us under critical fire weather by monday. this morning we are cooler, anywhere electric two degrees to significantly cooler, 5 grease novato and napa, and versus he will degrees san jose and mountain view. the temperature trend, mid-70s in san jose. the warming trend continues tomorrow and into monday, the warmest day of the week. sharply cooler tuesday and wednesday. thursday in the south bay looking to be the coolest day. a lot like last week. high pressure is off the coast. it tense to build on in closer to the golden state. as it does, those northerly winds are going to set up, the down sloping winds, giving us a rapid warmup tomorrow. today we are going to warm up quickly, as well. we are talking about numbers coming up almost ten degrees warmer tomorrow than today's readings. but today sunny and mild for most with mid-70s in san jose. up ehrhoff 70s morgan hill. sunnyvale, 73 degrees.

the doors opened at five, just 30 minutes ago. so we've already seen probably about 100 people already go in. we have video had from when the line was a bit longer. the california dental association is providing clean services, cleaning, filling, ex-tracks. oral health education as well on a first come, first serve basis today. 800 dentists, hygienists and others are here volunteering their services to help children and adults. children under 18 need to be here with an adult. once you get in the door they treat about 100 patients at a time. takes each people about three or four hours to get through the clinic. >> they are expecting to serve 2,000 people throughout the weekend. they are going to cut it off at about 1,000 people today, about 1,000 people tomorrow. so if you are in line and you miss out today, you can sleep over and be one of the first people in line tomorrow. the doors also open tomorrow at 5:00 a.m. we are here at the san jose

shopping mall's master plan. they heard from many asking to block the changes. also new this morning, an anti-gay rights group in southern california has purchased hourly radio ads urging parents to copy third children home from school on harvey milk day, which is wednesday. the state-mandated education honors the san francisco supervisor who was a gay rights pioneer and the first openly-gay elected official in the state. ad by "save california" will not air in the bay area. they report they were purchased in los angeles and sacramento. they. >> parents to protect their children from what they call in docket be continuation by keeping kids home from school wednesday. the guy rights group equality california said the campaign is homophobic and encourages discrimination. >> the head of the italian team is raising new concerns about the america's cup race on san francisco way. he wants to race but as abc7

them to 20 knots. >> the italians say if the wind is higher than 20 knots, they may not participate. i asked when would that decision be made? bertoli said it would be up to the team and the skipper. if there is not an agreement with oracle and other teams to lower the wind speed limit, the italian decision not to race could come on the day of the competition. that would play havoc with oracle's ceo to make it a racing spectacular on television. he plans to start it on time to accommodate television broadcasts. asking what consideration he had for the concerns drew this quick and barbed response from the team's leader. >> we are not here to produce a show. we are here to race and win the america's cup. >> the accident that took the life of sailor simpson is being investigate bed i a panel of experts that will make safety recommendations but they are just recommendations. they are not binding and it

a man opened fire and wounding him but before he died he was able to shoot and kill the suspect, broking his partner and 20 customers in the restaurant. this weekend is the popular maker fair in san mateo. it's a wild gathering of intensely creative do-it-yourselfers, but most of them are men. very few women choose engineering careers. in this morning's assignment 7 report, anchor dan ashley tells us how educators are trying to get girls interested early. >> there is a climbing wall inside this garage. they use a computer to control let lights to plot out which path to follow. >> something that came down to lack of space and us being engineers. >> laura and matt are part of the maker movement, a growing fascination with building things yourself. they will show off their climbing wall at the annual maker fair in san mateo. the fair provided us with this video of last year's gathering which attracted 100,000 people.

at this year's fair laura will stand out for more than just her climbing wall. >> i wish there were more female engineers. >> eats one example of the gender divide in engineering. the society of women engineers says fewer than 18% of graduating engineers are women, and few are end up working in the field. just 13%. creator of the maker fair wants to change that statistic. >> my goal is really that people cross over and try new things. we want to make everything kind of accessible so we aren't saying these are things that women do and these are things that men to. we want to get away from that and say this is something i like to do. so why not? >> research shows getting girls interested in science, technology, engineering and math in middle school is key. >> is he helping you get this? >> at this school for girls in palo alto, the sixth graders are building boxes and learning to

use power tools. >> it's not about boxes and tools. it's about getting them to solve problems. >> angie heads up the lab. there is a lot of intricate problems you have to solve. wait, where does the hinge go, which side should it fit in? which side of the box should open. how do all these pieces fit together. the more practice we give them, the more advantage it is. >> they begin to think of themselves as capable, especially in an environment that has been traditionally mail dominated. that they just feel more sure of themselves and more acceptable thinkers across the board. >> gore these girls it's about thinking outside the box. >> it's cool to have a hands-on project like this where you are trying to build something with your hands. >> i think we can do things men do and should be giving opportunities for women to

51 livermore and 54 union city with a cool 46 los gatos. the forecast highlights for today, looking at mostly clear conditions. a little bit of patchy fog oakland, san francisco, hay war. otherwise the warming trend getting going today. looking at the winds going offshore. high fire danger on monday but, of course, we always have high fire danger around here. even this morning with the temperatures cooler than average we will make up for the difference by the later hours this afternoon. with the 39, 8 degrees cooler this morning this napa. 3 degrees cooler in mountain view. san carlos and san jose, yeah, a little bit of a change this morning. so fog not lasting more than a couple of hours. maybe an hour at best. then it's gone. we will have the breezy, on-shore winds today. so 25 miles an hour gusts at times, keeping it just around 60 degrees at our coast but with mostly sunny conditions. if you want to head out to the beach it will be chilly and about a 20-degree spread as we hit about 80 today in our east bay. and the reason being, we've got high pressure offshore.

still it will nudge closer to the state tomorrow. but as for today we will still feel the effects of those cooler ocean waters, the air coming off of the motion and filtering into the bay. but tomorrow that gets cut off. so with the warmer days, slightly warmer today, we are talking above normal tomorrow with those northerly winds. they are going to get quite gusty. slightly offshore tomorrow night. that sets the stage for an even warmer day on monday. high temperatures today in the south bay 73 in santa clara. look for 74 cupertino with 72 in santa cruz. low 70s palo alto. a little breezy. but the gusty winds will be offshore, getting close to our beaches with numbers near 60 daly city. san francisco 65 today. 63 in south city. up in the north bay, numbers climbing quickly. afternoon highs, 3:00, 4:00, about 75 in petaluma. 76 by the water in vallejo. east bay pleasant.
