>> good morning, everyone. thanks nor joining us on this sunday, may 19th. >> let's start with a quick look at our weather with meteorologist lisa argen. >> clear and crisp out there. talking about temperatures on the cool side. lower 50s. it's going to be a beautiful afternoon with temperatures continuing to climb to above normal readings here. in san francisco numbers right around 60 degrees at 9:00 with mid-60s 11:00. and we are talking about temperatures in the upper 60s by 1:00. so we should be in the mid-60s normally so, yes, with a very light northwesterly winds for most of the morning hours. temperatures arrive quickly. then we will see the sea breeze

come back in the afternoon. that will allow numbers all along the coastline to climb to the upper 60s. but a couple miles inland, in your opinion the 70s. plenty of 80s around the bay with some 90s perhaps a little around the delta area. we will be talking about the temperatures coming up even more so tomorrow. the cool down gets set for much of the upcoming work week. that's all straight ahead. carolyn. >> thank you, lisa. well, breaking news overnight. san francisco firefighters were working to contain a two alarm blaze in the mission district. it broke out inside a three story apartment building on valencia street between 16th and 17th around 1:30 this morning. that blaze destroyed several units in that apartment. no injuries have been reported. a cause has not been determined. ready, set and go. that wacky san francisco tradition known as bay to breakers kicks off in just an

hour. it's the 102nd annual running of the race. the race will start downtown at main and howard and cross over the road. here's kira. >> in an hour they take off for the quintessential san francisco experience. it's a day everyone in this city looks forward to. some of the elite runners are starting to lineup right now at the finish line -- excuse me, the starting line. we are just a block from that. more than 30,000 athletes are expected to participate today, including thousands and thousands of people watching from the sidelines. take a look at this video. there are added security precautions this year. abc7 news was at the starting line last night as extra barricades were set up to line the course. and backpacks or bags larger than 8.5 by 11 by 4 inches are banned. that's not very big. people who hop the fence and try to get in the race without a bid

number will get kicked out this year. and shopping carts are banned for a few years now. organizers swapped out garbage cans along the route for see-three trash cans. 17 law enforcement agencies, including the fib, are joining forces to keep today's course safe. bomb technicians, k9 units and they have added cameras to the start line and finish line. that's something knew. also, carolyn, something i just learned within the last few minutes, the elite racers, as we mentioned, start running at 7:00. they are expected to finish about 7:30 in ocean beach. but right before they begin there will be a moment of silence for the victims of the boston marathon bombings. we will definitely record that and bring it to you later this morning on abc7 news at nine. reporting live in san francisco, kira klapper, abc7 news. >> thank you, kira. let's take a look at the route for today's run. it will start downtown at main and howard, cross over the grueling hay street hill,

through golden gate park and finish along the great highway. this will mean several street closers so you can expect major gridlock until early afternoon. bart is starting service early to bring runners to the starting line and muni is running special express service before and after the race. we have all the information on our website. abc7news.com. just click on see it on tv. today marks the tragic anniversary. san francisco police homicide inspectors need help solving a murder that occurred after last year's bay to breaker. in the the young man, 34-year-old mr. martin. he was suckerpunched and had hit his head on the pavement, suffering a severe brain injury. he never regained consciousness and died in the hospital on june 7th. police later released this video from may 20th.

it shows sharon meadow at the east end of golden gate park. that's where the beating occurred. witnesses are saying martin argued with some men wearing 49er jerseys before he was punched and investigators think photos taken in that area might help them identify the suspect. there is a second major event taking place in san francisco this morning. the final leg of cyclings amgen's tour of california. stage 8 starts at 8:15 this morning in san francisco, ending in santa rosa. the 81-mile course begins at the marina green, crosses the golden gate bridge, passes through sausalita, goes up the coast along highway one. they expect the largest finish ever at the finish line in santa rosa. during yesterday's race there was a bomb square in downtown livermore. a package with southern california labels was left unattended so a bomb squad was

called in. a three block area was evacuated. a vender came forward to claim the package and its harmless contents. a chp motorcycle officer escorting the amgen race is hospitalized with moderate injuries after colliding with a car in brentwood. investigators say the driver of the car tried to make a u-turn on march creek road. it happened around 12:30 yesterday afternoon. the chp officer was airlifted to the medical center in walnut creek. >> this morning members of back at the tract yesterday." they began weeding and planting vegetables even though cal berkeley owns the land and approved it for development, occupy members say that's not the point. >> it's not albany land,ite university of california land and it should be turn into a public farm because that's what serves the best interests of california. >> we hope they leave on their own volition. >> that was a uc spokesperson. the university's position has always been the occupy members

are trespassing. last saturday occupy pie the farm did the same thing. and on monday of last week four people were arrested and the planting was bulldozed. i think we have to resist this attempt to criminalize an illegal immigrant tree. it doesn't work. >> another protest against the university of california. neighbors having their say about a plan to remove thousands of nonnative trees from the east bay hills. u.c. berkeley is seeking federal funds to cut down $22,000 eucalyptus and other trees. the project is in the final stages of an environmental impact review. the university wants to replace the trees with native species to lessen the fire danger. >> well, we have fire danger today with the temperatures so high and the wind out there. >> yeah. it has increased. really all the time we are

>> knew this morning, there are still questions about the spans of the bay bridge. they are reporting caltran first discovered corrosion back on portions of the bridge in 2006. caltrain reported they were not properly sealed. they studied hundreds of tendons but found little corrosion and then moved on. they just consulted nine outside engineers who looked at the paper and they said caltrain based their conclusion on wrong information and underestimated how long the steal tendons were left vulnerable. they are warning if they miscalculated, the new bay bridge could be still crippled by a earthquake. there is one winning ticket are in the biggest jackpot in

power ball history. $595 million. no, it was not sold in california. the single winner was sold at a supermarket in deafer hills, florida. a lottery official there says more details will be released later on. there were two tickets sold in california that got five numbers but missed the power ball. the lottery is still calculating their worth. one was sold at this san jose 711 on the express way. >> is this like a usual lotto kind of thing for you, you come and get the snacks and the ticket. >> jacques it's like a little celebration. >> take a look at the winning

and >> that pop resulted in back surgery to treat the original injury to his disk, but as his body compensated because of the pain, he ultimately developed an excruciating condition similar to sciatica. >> it was awful. it was literally to the point i couldn't sit down more than five minutes. >> a doctor at saint mary's traced his pain to a joint in his pelvis that eartates the the sacro iliac joints. he recommended a new procedure known as i-fuse. it uses implants constructed from titanium. >> it's been in hip replacements, but now it's applied to the point of the pelvis where it's never been applied before. >> as the procedure begins, the doctor uses multiple x-rays to align temporary metal rods that will guide the hollow titanium implants into place in the pelvis.

a separate monitor surrounding nerves to make sure there is no contact. >> we need to place them across the joints. >> once the rods are set, he passes the triangle-shaped io place. as seen in the animation provided by the manufacturer, three individual implants will ultimately stabilize the joint, relieving pressure on the nerve. technically we are done. finally the team makes one last check to make sure there is no contact with any surrounding nerves. he said about half the patients are able to return home the same day, and others require several days in the hospital for the initial recovery. the goal is to enable a patient to pretty much forget about it. because the best joint is the free joint. >> for jason the surgery has been followed by an intense regimen. physical therapy, but the results, he says, has been life-changing. >> it's been fantastic. no pain. i know it's early, but my quality of life, that's the first thing i noticed immediately.

so all around the bay we will be looking at fog-free conditions for the next 48 hours. then we will see a return to the onshore push. that will initiate changes. today, though, the winds and the clear sky allowing for the warmer start. 49 in santa rosa with 53 fairfield and 48 in los gatos. so our forecast highlights calling for mostly clear and warmer today. even warmer still tomorrow. we are talking about numbers coming up anywhere from three to about ten degrees today and then tomorrow we are going to add another five to seven degrees of warming. cooler days starting on tuesday and high pressure begins to loosen its grip and low pressure drops out of the north coast. here's a look where we were yesterday. we were certainly a little bit cooler, but we were warmer along the coast. this morning we are back in the 40s. seven degrees warmer than we were yesterday. but this morning pretty much everybody holding on to a little bit more heat and sun was

officially up at 5:56. now we are lacking at the temperatures beginning to warm quicker than yesterday. so as high pressure builds in, we have low pressure diving down into the great basin and that's strengthening the high. as that happens the winds will pick up later on today into the evening hours. so the northwest winds getting a little breezy throughout the day, then they will shift briefly to the north. could get up to 40 miles an hour. higher elevations of the north bay and east bay hills. fire danger becomes a concern right on through tomorrow. so be careful throughout the day today and even though we have that on shore push on tuesday, still the hills are really dry out there. 82 morgan hill. 77 sunnyvale today. look at the 60s returning along the coast. that's where you go to beat the heat. 78 in palo alto. 70 downtown today. so about five to six degrees of warming in san francisco. numbers coming up another seven degrees here to the mid-80s for sonoma.

which happens to be tomorrow coming up. carolyn. >> thank you, lisa. well, 30,000 registered runners, perhaps twice that many spectators, are pouring into san francisco this morning for the bay to breakers footrace. this 102nd annual running, has a more serious aspect while still wacky. the police chief told me in light of boston he thinks people want to see lots of uniformed officers and they will. >> they will, carolyn. already seeing them this morning. the race is still 30 minutes from starting. in addition to more officers, there are more security precautions. in fact, i was able to snag this bay to breakers backpack. it's very small. 8.5 by 11 by 4 inches. this is the biggest bag anyone can bring if you are planning to run or walk. just watch the race. they are going to be really cracking down on people who bring bags larger than this.

they don't want anyone hiding anything that could be even remotely miss con screwed as suspicious. abc7 news was by the starting line last night as organizers were setting up more barricades. they have them across the entire stretch of the 12k course. they also have changed trash cans along the route to be clear garbage bins so they can see what people are putting inside. 17 law enforcement agencies, including the fbi, are joining san francisco police department to keep today's course safe. bomb technicians and k9 units are positioned along the coast, while they monitor cameras along the course. there will be cameras at the start and finish line. that's new this year, very first time. if you are wondering, bay to breakers is presented by craigslist for the first time this year. that company will reimburse all costs for all that extra law enforcement today. back here live, you are looking at the starting line." all the elite racers are lining up as we speak. they take off at 7:00 a.m.

increase and that sets the stage for those winds to blow from the land to the sea. but it's going to be short-lived. because we have cooler conditions as soon as tuesday. here's a look at the week ahead in oakland. today in the upper 70s. the warmest day tomorrow, about 80 degrees. dropping to the upper 60s, staying there through wednesday and thursday. look at the recovery, very slow. not until the end of next weekend do we see temperatures back into the low 70 #* 70s. upper 80s for livermore. tomorrow into the low 90s, but dropping. can you believe that? into the mid-70s for tuesday and even further wednesday and thursday. so we are looking at a trough in the gulf of alaska to drop down into oregon for tuesday. won't bring precip but it will aid in the cooling. comfortable in monterey today with upper 8s. low 80s yosemite and the northern sierra checking in at
