>> good morning, everyone. i'm carolyn tyler. thanks nor joining us on this sunday, may 19th. let's start with a first look whether are meteorologist lisa argen. >> we are down in santa cruz now where there is nobody at the beach. you might think about that later on today because we are going to get pretty warm quickly. 72 degrees with a north wind at 24 miles an hour by the delta.

elsewhere with calm winds we are already in the low to mid-60s. 65 santa rosa, 62 livermore, 63 in los gatos. a quick warmup with very little wind. but then the winds are going to switch to the northwest and northeast. that sets the stage lead to go warmer weather tomorrow. 70s and 80s across the bay. getting close to 90 today. and more 90s tomorrow. i'll have those numbers for you in a few minutes. carolyn. >> thank you, lisa. it's a warm one. well, 30,000 runners are racing towards the finish line in the 102nd bay to breakers. the elite runners are already done." enjoying the san francisco tradition are tens of thousands of spectators. despite the heightened security in the weak of the fatal bombings at boston marathon, the focus today is still on the fun. abc7 news reporter kira klapper joins us live near the finish line. kira, you have information on the winner? >> that's right, i do, carolyn.

i can tell you this very easily. the winners ran across the city faster than we drove across it. we had to maneuver a lot of barricades to get where we are. the energy is just incredible. there are still runners clogsing the finish line behind me and it's electric. elite runners finished within 40 minutes of leaving the start line. after a brief moment of silence for the bombing victims, the race started. this race brings runners from across the road. as carolyn said, i got the hadn't morris and privilege to speak with both winners, the mail and the female winner. this is his first bay to breakers, he's from ethiopia. he ran it in 35 minutes and won second. female winner, diane johnson in east central africa ran the 12

minutes in 40 minutes and 12 seconds. this is her second bay to breakers. last year she placed second, this year she won. per last race was the boston marathon. she tells us why this is so unique and why she returns. >> bay to breakers is special because there is so many people in costume. it feels like halloween to me. it's just like the city of boston and everyone here is so nice. i have nothing but great experience when i come here. >> the finish line we are getting a look at right now closes at twelve. and they are slowly reopening the city of san francisco ahead of that as fewer runners and walkers are on the course. but they will continue heightened security measures throughout the day today to ensure that not only the race but the entire day goes off without a hitch. as carolyn mentioned, heightened security in the aftermath of the boston marathon bombings. but the day has go splendidly

so far and we are thankful for that. report being live, kira klapper, abc7 news. >> it looks fantastic out there. thank you, kira. let's take a look at the route of today's run. it will take hours for everyone to make it through. it started downtown at main and howard. of course, the race will mean several street closers. kira mentioned how summer is beginning to open you but you can expect major described lock until early this afternoon. muni is running special express service to bring the runners back downtown. we have all the information you need. click on "see it on tv." today marks the tragic anniversary. san francisco police homicide inspectors need help solving a murder that occurred after last year's bay to breaker. 30-year-old steven martin of santa clara was severely beaten at goldene park around 5:00

in the afternoon. he was wearing a green troll wig that day. police later released video from that day back in 2012, showing the east part of the park where the beating occurred. martin argued with some men wearing 49ers jerseys before he was punch. >> breaking news. two people were shot. you see sky 7 over the scene a few minutes ago. the officers are still out there. second victim is still undergoing surgery. no arrests have been made. this morning the group occupy the farm is back on a piece of land in albany. members tore down police tape at the gill tract yesterday and began weeding and planting vegetables. even though cal-berkeley owns that land and has approved it for development, occupiers say that's not the point. >> this is not albany land, it's

university ever california land and it should be turned back in farmland because that serves the best purposes for the people. >> the university's position has always been the occupy members are trespassing. last saturday occupy the farm did the same thing. four people were eventually arrested and the planting was bulldozed. i think we have to resist this attempt to criminalize an illegal immigrant tree. it doesn't work. >> another protest against the university of california. neighbors having their say about a plan to remove thousands of nonnative trees from the east bay hills. u.c. berkeley is seeking federal funds to cut down 22,000 eucalyptus and other trees.

the plan is in the final stages of an environmental impact review. the university wants to replace the trees with native species to lessen the fire danger. >> there was power ball history. it wasn't sold in california. the single winner was sold in florida. a florida lottery executive says more details to come later on. there were two tickets sold in california that got five numbers but missed the power ball. the lottery is still calculating their worth. we are showing you this 711 because one of the tickets was sold there at a 711 on the express way. >> is this kind of a usual lotto kind of thing for you, you come and get snacks and the ticket? >> oh, yeah. hopefully i get a little luck. >> once again that 711 is the bay area's lucky spot with a 5 for 5 winning ticket that missed the big jackpot by just one power ball. is it yours? check out the numbers.

>> there is a second major event taking place in san francisco. it's happening now. it's the final leg of amgen, california." right now you see them crossing the golden gate bridge. the 81-mile course begins at the marina green, crosses the golden gate bridge, passes through sausalita, goes up the coast along highway one. they expect the largest finish -- crowd ever at the finish line in santa rosa. ms. argen and i were telling you you might have a little delay getting back across the golden gate bridge. >> as i follow that path it's getting warmer and warmer from san francisco up to santa rosa. later on today plenty of 10s in the north bay rifle now the view nice and clear out there. we are talking about

>> breaking news. early this morning san francisco fire departments worked to put out a two-alarm fire. it broke out between 6th and 17th streets along valencia this morning. it destroyed several units in that apartment. no injuries have been reported. a cause has not yet been determined. >> knew this morning, questions about corrosion playing the new bay bridge span. today sacramento be. reporting caltran first discovered corrosion on the steal tendons on the skyway portion of the new bridge in 2006. caltran concluded they were not properly sealed. they studied hundreds of tendons but found little significant corrosion so moved on. the bee has just consulted nine outside engineers who looked at

the data. they tell us that caltrain based their conclusion on wrong information and underestimated how long the steal tendons were left vulnerable. there's a restaurant in burlingame that's decided to stop selling a very rare and controversial dish, lion meat, after facing protest. the mokutanya yakitori restaurant features exotic meat on their menu. the owner decided to try it out this week. he purchased a portion of farm-raised african lion meat from a company in illinois. after posting it on facebook people flooded the page with angry comments. the owner said he received over 200 calls yesterday. some were threatening. >> some were nice but others said, okay, stop selling lion meat, but others say i am going to come and rape you and kill you. >> serving lion is not illegal. it's on the threatened list, not the endangered list.

there are an estimated 23,000 lions in the wild. but critics say it could develop a taste for the meat by could boost the danger of people hunting it in africa. >> >> it's been a long and painful road to recovery from jason gamble, the former redwood city police officer was breaking up a late-night fight when his back became a casualty. >> i had a situation where i got into a tussle with an individual who didn't want to be arrested, and i felt a pop in my back. >> that pop resulted in back surgery to treat the original injury to his disk, but as his body compensated because of the pain, he ultimately developed an excruciating condition similar to sciatica. >> it was awful.

it was literally to the point where i couldn't sit down for more than five minutes. >> a dock for from saint mary's traced his pain to the sacro iliac joints. he recommended a new procedure known as i-fuse. it uses implants constructed from titanium. >> this has been around for decades in hip replacement, but it's a new twist because now it's applied to the point of the pelvis where it's never been applied before. >> as the procedure begins, the doctor uses multiple x-rays to align temporary metal rods that will guide the hollow titanium implants into place in the pelvis. a separate nuro-monitor surrounding nerves to make sure there is no contact. >> we need to safely place them across the joints. >> once the rods are set, he

taps the triangle-shaped implants into place. as seen in the animation provided by the manufacturer, three individual implants will ultimately stabilize the joint, relieving pressure on the nerve. finally the team makes one last check to make sure there is no contact with any surrounding nerves. he said about half the patients are able to return home the same day, and others require several days in the hospital for the initial recovery. the goal is to enable a patient to pretty much forget about it. because the best joint is the freon joint. >> for jason the surgery has been followed by an intense regimen. physical therapy, but the results, he says, has been life-changing. >> it's been fantastic. no pain. i know it's early, but my quality of life, that's the first thing i noticed immediately. >> carolyn johnson, abc7 news. >> this weekend seems a lot like last weekend with sunny skies and high temperatures. >> doesn't it, though? deja vu. we have the cool-down and the

winds coming back. that's a familiar scenario as well. but as we get started this morning, live doppler 7hd not showing anywhere in the way of low clouds and fog. it's confined in the monterey bay. we will look at clear conditions right on through tomorrow night that. allows the warmer air to be mixed down to the surface as higher pressure builds in the next day and a half. here's a look from the sutro camera. look at all the 60s already. except at the coast. we are talking low 60s from mountain view, oakland and san francisco. so you can tell already we are on our way to a very warm afternoon. temperatures about five degrees above average by 3:00, 4:00. here's the look from santa cruz where it is nice and quiet but by later on today probably a busy place. 67 santa rosa with low 60s in napa, 72 the north wind, up to 24 miles an hour of fairfield. 64 livermore. and mid-60s in los gatos. we are mostly sunny, no fog to speak of.

very light winds or nonexistent. we are talking about warmer the warmest weather will be tomorrow and then a big change rives for tuesday. that will usher in some very gusty winds. maybe a wind advisory by them. overnight here's a look at how we warmed up this morning. so overnight we cooled off and 9:00 right now we are anywhere from two to eleven degrees warmer. the yellow represents the warmer stage. that's where we will continue throughout the next day or so, as the fog is absent. the winds bringing the cooler ocean air. really not going to happen. we will get some gusty winds later on today. that will keep the beaches clear. here's a look where we should be. the white column averages mid-and upper 60s. oakland, san francisco, some mid-70s. 77 should be the high in livermore but going for a high in the mid-80s today. taking us anywhere from nine degrees above average in oakland, livermore and napa to just a couple degrees above average in redwood city. you see everyone enjoying mild to warm temperatures today.

our temperature trend starting tomorrow with the peak heat in oakland will take you to 80 degrees. look what happens on tuesday with the gusty onshore winds. not going to recover very quickly. in fact, the winds are going to stay with us all week long. looks like next weekend we will get to where we should be. here's a look at livermore tomorrow. 91 degrees. tomorrow the warmest day and then 70s after that barely through the rest of the work week. if you like the warmth, enjoy it because here's what to come. by tuesday we are looking at an area of low pressure dropping down into oregon. the rain stays to the north. you know what that means. that means all that cool air off the ocean rushes in and spreads across the bay. so that's the cool down. today the warmup with 70 san francisco, 74 san mateo, mid-80s resulting with the quick warmup, the northerly winds. and adding to the warmth today in santa rosa. 80 in san jose.

>> welcome back, everybody. let's start this half-hour with a quick look at the whether with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> hi there, carolyn. from the sutro camera. look at this shot. beautiful. numbers in the 60s except at our coast, half moon bay 355. 61 in san jose and 60 santa cruz. with very little wind right now, we are warming up quickly. but we will have some breezy winds later on today out of the north. that also, though, will aid us in the warmup, increase the fire danger. gusty winds in the higher elevations through tomorrow. mid-and upper 70s around the bay with mid- and upper-60s even at our beaches. the fog stays away until late tomorrow and we will look at inland temperatures

line within about 40 minutes of leaving the start line. it went off without a hitch. organizers are telling us they feel they can breathe a sigh of relief but it didn't happen without a lot of preparation. we have video from about 7:00 this morning. prior to this, though, days, months of planning, especially in the weak of the boston marathon bombings. there was extra barricades set up, trash cans were moved from regular trash cans to clear trash cans so organizers and police could see what people were lacing inside of them. large backpacks were banned and police tried to crack down on runners who jumped into the race at the last minute and didn't have bibs. 17 law enforcement agencies, including the fbi, joined doors keep the course safe. there were bomb tech anything, k9 units and this is all in the wake of the boston marathon bombings. the female winner of the race today was at the boston marathon. she ran it and she told me she had all those victims in her heart today. take a listen. >> just fortunate, you know,

that i finished early. it could have been me or it could have been my friends who were out there. you know, the hotel where we stayed was so close to where everything happened. you know, you just -- just thinking about all those before we came here today and doing what they love to do and be thankful that i get to do this. >> all right. take a look at this. these are the two winners for the male and female contest. tolossa gedfi fufi from ethiopia won in 35:01. he ran 7.46 miles. and diane nukuri-johnson, from whom you just heard, ran the 12ky 40:12. she's from burundi in africa. people are still finishing and they tell me they will close the finish line at noon. it's a beautiful day if you want to get here before then and enjoy the festivities. kira klapper, abc7 news.

>> thank you, kira. you mentioned a fitting tribute, a moment of silence before the race for the boston victims. on tuesday we find out whether super bowl 50 will be played here in the bay area or south florida. so far it's widely believed that the deciders, nfl team owners, have already made up their minds that the 2016 games should be held at the 49ers new stadium in santa clara. they cast the official votes on tuesday. even miami officials hold out little hope of getting the bid after the state legislature failed to approve fund to go upgrade the dolphins aging stadium. huston is trying to get the bid for super bowl 51. that will also happen tuesday. and also tuesday the city will celebrate the warriors winning season and playoff run. steph cur will receive the keys to the city. event starts at 11:30 at city

halls free. it is open to the public. the warriors may have lost in the second round of the playoffs, but their season success went way beyond expectations. golden state finished the season at 47-35, to come in second place in the pacific division. >> president obama is coming back to the bay area next month for another fundraiser. this one focusing on technology. the president will attend a reception and dinner on june 6th on the peninsula. the reception will be at the home of cofounder of flip board, co-founder mike mchugh. there will be a dinner also. he's a founder of microsystems. this morning the turkish prime minister is in san francisco after meeting with president obama earlier this week. the prime minister is staying at the st. regis. our camera caught part of his entourage last night outside the hotel. turkish media is reporting the prime minister met with tech companies in silicon valley and a turkish-american group this

the woman oprah winfrey called her all-time guest is about to become a u.c. berkeley graduate. who is this woman? >> of the thousands of students graduating from cal, no one has a story like hers. tara trent was forced to marry when she was just 11 years old in zimbabwe. >> by 18 i already had three children without a g.e.d. but i wanted an education more than anything. >> she's now a 52-year-old mother of six. against all odds, including commuting three days a week from salinas, she has more than achieved her goal. she already has two bachelors degrees, a ph.d. and a masters from other schools. this masters in epidemiology at u.c. berkeley is the culmination of a dream. >> i knew if i get this education, i'll be able to give back to my own community. >> she already started on that

path when she came to oprah's attention two years ago. the talk show host gave her more than a million dollars to build schools in zimbabwe. >> to see these kids going to school.mean, -- >> something you wanted as a girl? >> it's something i wanted. >> her children's father died of a.i.d.s. now with her new epidemiology degree, tara will make a.i.d.s. education a priority in a country devastated by the disease. >> she wants to make the world a better place. in my jewish religion it's called healing the universe. >> in her native zimbabwe, they have another expression. >> my mother said, you know the culture we have, if you bury your dreams, they will always call you back. >> her dreams have called her back home. she heads to zimbabwe right after graduation.

your forecast. >>. >> the wind is pretty much absent in some parts of the bay. it allowed for the quick warmup and the fog which is headed out of town. some gusty winds increasing the temperatures quickly out by the delta, and he with have a shore duration of a breezy wind event in the higher elevation come tonight and tomorrow in the north and east bay hills. take a look how clear it is. nice and sunny with plenty of 60s. 62 santa cruz with mid-50s on the coast. low 60s elsewhere. a comfortable day from half moon

bay to point reyes. temperatures coming up a little tomorrow but not getting too hot at the shoreline. so once again we will have the nice spread across the bay for those of you who like it warm and cooler. we've been showing you this shot of sapp cruz. yeah, you don't really think of going to the beach so early, but with numbers in and around the 50s, you can see some folks out there with already sunny skies. 62 livermore, 72 fairfield and 67 in santa cruz. and santa rosa, i should say. we are looking at the clear skies to continue throughout the day today. evening hours and right through tomorrow. the fog will be absent until about late tomorrow. that will initiate the big changes that come our way on tuesday. warmer weather with us today and the warmest day of the week will be tomorrow. here's a look at the temperature trend. we are much warmer today than yesterday morning. anywhere from three to eleven degrees warmer. we had a little fog yesterday. this morning the wind is also aiding in the warmup. so the dry conditions, the gusty

winds and the higher elevations, this is vollmer peak and this is also an area tomorrow that would have some very gusty, offshore winds. the white column is where we should be for this time of year. upper 60s to the upper 70s. and in the yellow and orange, that's how warm it's going to get. up to 70 today. six degrees above normal in san francisco. mid-80s for livermore and napa. that's nine degrees above the average. you can see not quite as dramatic in redwood city and san jose but still warmer than you should be for this time of year. here's a look at the week ahead. you notice that tomorrow with the warmest day of the week in oakland at 80 degrees. feeling pretty good out there. but then look what happens. numbers plummet quickly as strong offshore winds usher in that cooler marine air. in fact it could be pretty windy. we could see a wind advisory on tuesday. of course, with the winds all of that fog will rush back up probably tuesday and then across the bay. it's going to come up from the south. temperatures tomorrow in

livermore, 91. dropping through the 70s. so you know the drill. the system up to the north dropping south. that will pull up the fog. probably through the overnight hours tomorrow into tuesday morning. so that's when the cool-down should commence with temperatures right around 80 today. we've got warm weather ahead, 82 in morgan hill and 78 in san rafael and temperatures another two to four degrees warmer tomorrow many here come the big cool down tuesday. the breeze will stay with us on wednesday. partly cloudy thursday and friday. with temperatures in the low to mid-70s. i told you before about 74 to 76 should be the average high for santa rosa. >> so we are above that the next couple days. >> yes. >> get out there and enjoy it today. thank you, lisa. let's check out sports. it was a close one for the san jose sharks but they managed to keep their season alive. here's rick kwan with this morning's sports highlights. good morning. down three games to none in the western conference semifinals, san jose was facing a near must-win situation last night against the kings.

let's go out to the tank. the sharks came out hungry. brad stuart delivers a big hit. just 1:34 in san jose gets on the board. dan boyle one-times it past jonathan quick. it's his second goal of the playoffs. still in the first. the kings answer. stuart turns the puck over. tyler toffoli beat antti niemi. it was 1-all. and logan couture had to leave after he injured his leg going into the board. he would return and in overtime he put the hurt on the kings. couture wins it with a power play goal. the sharks beat l.a. 2-1. they will try to even the series tuesday in the tank. >> we thought we were the better team leaving l.a. and then we were down 2-0. this time of the year, being the better team out there doesn't do you any good. you have to win on the scoreboard. >> you are never really, really in trouble until you lose your first game at home. it's a big win. i thought everybody elevated their game. i thought our game management at that point of the night is as

good as it's been all year. >> before the giants took on the rockies, the manager bruce bochy called a rare team meeting to talk about the players' sloppy play of late. it didn't help. san francisco made three more errors last night. this young lead was having a good time at coors field. the same could not be said for tim lincecum. he gets to this dribbler off the bat of jeff rutledge but then throws the ball away. that was part of a three-run third for the rockies. how bad was it for timmy? he falls down just trying to make a pitch. only his pride was hurt. still in the fourth rockies pitcher tyler chetwood singles up the minute. -- the middle. it goes off lens couple's leg into center. make it 4-1. colorado had two more runs in the fifth on this blast by wilin rosario. 10-2, the final. lincecum takes the loss, giving up 6 runs and 7 hits in five innings. it was star trek night at the coliseum. either that or those are raider fans. royals took the lead in the

final look at your accuweather forecast. >> well, a dryer atmosphere. quickly warming temperatures. absence of fog and the wind going offshore, all creating a warm day today. here's a look from our sutro camera. it already looks warm out there. tomorrow the air quality will take a hit in the east and south bay. so far we will do fine this afternoon. you can see the temperatures are warmer, but not excessive. 07 san francisco. 64 half moon bay with mid-80s in concord and livermore. look for 82 morgan hill. we could see temperatures hit around 90 out by the delta. here's the look ahead. the warmest day tomorrow. 60s coast, 80s around the bay, 90 inland. cool on shore flow will be with us, spreading cooler air all across the bay. it will be sunny because the atmosphere.will cool down so much it will mix out the marine layer. despite the cool numbers the trade-off will be bright sunny skies with 60s and 70s for the week ahead. >> you said bad air quality and
