good afternoon, everybody, i'm larry beil. >> i'm carolyn johnson. beginning in oklahoma there is sheer devastation following a tornado that touched down with 200 miles per hour winds. it's slammed the oklahoma city suburb of moore. neighborhoods have been flattened and buildings are on fire right now. >> a school took a hit and was destroyed. children inside of the school are being pulled out from

under the rubble. reports indicate 30 students have been rescued and they're alive. dozen of other kids may still be trapped. one witness says some students were take dwron a church so officials are not sure how many kids may be missing right now. that destruction spread out across 12-mile area. >> it's located on the southeastern edge of oklahoma city. the city reported most damage when it hit around 1:00 our time. now, take a look. we have incredible video of the twister making an approach and touching down in oklahoma. you can see it is swirling. the twister believed to be a mile wide. >> this is video of the

this chopper shot is moving. it did look homes were flattened in that area. >> we'll sfee we can get a more stable shot here. you can see the debris. talking about winds of 166-200 miles per hour. i'm looking at a quote from betsy randolph with okay okay owe -- oklahoma patrol quoted as saying there are people trapped and you're would going to see devastation for days still to come. just finding everybody is part of the rescue commission. there are more slets tlets so it's coming. >> we do have a statement from oklahoma governor todd lamb who says it is devastating and more. he says this is horrific, and we just don't know what

numbers are. he goes on to say schools have been hit, hospitals hit and businesses flattened and neighborhoods, wiped away. we don't have numbers in yet but he says it's going to be horrific that. is from the lieutenant governor. >> you can see splinters of wood everywhere. when talking about a tornado people are saying it might have been two miles wade. >> this are estimated the tornado was probably two miles wide, almost unheard of that threat will remain in that area into evening hours. you can see on this looping live doppler here is a long line of storms that can produce tornadoes from in ill

skpil into texas. so they still have potential to produce more tornadoes. sheer look at oklahoma city and moore area. things have quieted down there. now, but of course as you know, massive devastation is left behind. here is this some video taken of the tornado. take a look at that funnel cloud. looks skinny and harmless there. i was listening to storm chasers following it. they were saying they'd never seen anything like this one before. this is a look at the tornado watch going into evening hours. from parts of illinois this area under a tornado watch into late evening hours. and this is a look at classic

ingredients producing this line of storms this, is what you get when tornadoes develop. cool, dry air mass now swinging down from the northwest. and these collide, you can get instability in the atmosphere. and with the clash of the air masses you get rotation. once that starts, these storms produce a momentum of their own owe, becoming stronger and stronger. >> thank you. back to the bay area now. sky 7 takes us to the scene of breaking news in vacaville. that is where a brush fire is threatening homes this afternoon.

you can see an out building near a hoax. we've seen rvs in that area that are partially burned. that is firefighters called for help from solano county. and joining us now is daniel berlin with cal fire. can you tell us what the situation is? >> 15 acres now 100% contained. so this fire is one of several we've had. >> what is the extent of the damage? are there other homes that were burned?. >> there are several homes threatened by this fire, we're able to get in there and put a stop to the fire, it does appear one outbuilding was engulfed.

>> what is your level of concern going forward? we had a winter rainy season that wasn't that plentiful. you've got a lot of dry trees and brush that can go up. we get warm weather. >> conditions are dry for this early in the year. this winter we saw very little snowfall. we've seen a significant increase in our activity. we have seen almost twice as many fires this year today than we normally would. moving into holiday weekend, memorial day weekend, we've got a lot of people outdoors and we're trying to urge people to understand how dangerous the conditions are, how important they be safe outside. >> good advice. especially with people barbecuing. daniel, thank you very much for your time. >> and an issue that is facing

communities across the bay area firefighters battled a grass fire that is now contained breaking out just before 2:00 this afternoon between ivy and donald drive. these lines threatened between 30, 40 homes but crews were all over this one. and all this fire burned between 8 to 10 acres of dry brush. >> east palo alto police chief declared a crime emergency today following a recent spike in violence, one person died, eight others shot during past two weeks. declaring an emergency allows the chief to declare days off allowing police to double the number of officers and the sheriff will lead an effort to

target gang member autos the latest violent crime took the life of a 16-year-old boy in front of his own home. he had just driven into his family driveway, one person opened fire on him, and three friends. the victim's family says he was not a gang member and the shooter mift mite have mistaken him for someone else. >> he'd never been in trouble before. >> two teens suffered minor injuries. police goring to check to see if he or his companions have gang ties. he was a junior at woodside high school and played on the football team there. >> a 5-year-old girl is dead after fallinging from an suv that crash thtd morning. police say speeding may have been to blame. five other people in the vehicle were injure bud not seriously.

the 5-year-old girl was not in the child safety seat. california law requires children under age and under height of four feet nine to be strapped into a safety seat. >> students at silver creek high school are grieving after a class mate died on the way to school. a truck hit the 16-year-old while he rode his bicycle. this is just blocks from campus. >> the driver is currently cooperating with investigators reporting what occurred here, today. >> sky 7 captured video investigators searching the scene for clues. police point out the victim was not wearing a bicycle helmet. the high school brought in grief counselors today. >> this was sentencing day for a formler -- former police officer who turned to crime. >> he's been found guilty of a

number of crimes. >> including selling drugs that were stolen from the task force. >> shown here norman welsh pleaded with a judge to go light on his sentence. a sobbing welsh said, these crimes were not for greed or arrogance but a call for help. in court his attorney claims the former drug task force commander was suffering from depression and ptsd. >> there is no defense here. he knew right from wrong. problem is that he was making decisions not as a hardened criminal but based on impulse. >> he will likely serve at least 10 of that. >> a big court victory for

12,000 health care workers set to strike this morning. today a judge ruled only 100 workers doing critical tasks could not strike. the university was seeking to exempt hundreds more. officials say the strike will cost $20 million. hundreds of surgeries and sessions and therapy treatments have been postponed. the striking workers include x ray technicians, radiation therapists and pharmacists. thousands may join picket lines. >> big changes coming to san francisco international airport including a hotel next to the international terminal part of a 10 year airport master plan revealed today by ed lee. the plan includes a makeover for terminal one, improvements underway to the concourse and check points at terminal three. then, a 400 room luxury hotel.

we're continuing with live coverage of the scene in oklahoma. the town of moore where a devastating tornado has hit. you can see emergency workers there sifting through rubble.

and trying to find people under there. some buildings have been damaged. a number of kids taken out of the school. so good news there. but still, it's going to take days to figure out where everybody is and id both survivors and victim autos yes. a devastating situation there. schools intrn hit, hospitals have been hit, businesses, flattened he says it's going to be significant and horrific. and this is just south of oklahoma city. >> and calling it horrific is not an exaggeration this is almost exactly the same location hit by tornado may 3, 1999. i was there, the day that have tornado strike and looking at the damage and i've been in many storm ravaged areas and have never seen anything like that from tornadoes. this appears to be worse.

so-to-call it horrific is not exaggerating. >> we're talking with b.a mile, perhaps two miles wide. >> almost unheard of. i've been to areas where tornadoes have hit, that is one back in 1999 estimated to be about a mile wide but two miles is almost unheard of. so what ever you hear today it's probably not hyperbole. it's accurate. >> what is frightening is what is looming because you're talking about conditions that are ripe for more potential twister autos it's true. the storm watches and warnings are remaining in affect for a long, long area across several states. as mentioned the clash of the cold, dry air mass from north and warm air from the south you're going to have instability triggering violent

hour, growing devastation from a huge tornado near oklahoma city. it's now a desperate search and rescue mission for residents in the suburb of moore. you can see many, many workers there just trying to pull people from the debris. a major tornado with winds as much as 200 miles per hour touching down. >> we understand it ripped two miles and leveled hundreds of homes. an elementary school took a direct hit. and 60 people have been sent to the hospital. survivors describe the moments the twitter hit. >> just it was just -- the roof came o i felt something. it's raining on me and all that. >> and abc news just confirmed
