oh. >> so -- . >> a mother's reaction she finds her son alive and well. one of the many emotional family reunions after yesterday's devastating tornado that destroyed two schools in oklahoma. good afternoon, everybody, i'm larry beil.

>> i'm carolyn johnsonful officials in moore say the search for survivors and more victims from the massive tornado is almost complete. the number of dead stands at 246789 a welcome drop from yesterday's coroner's report of 51 bodies then rose to some estimates of 91 last night. nine of those killed are children. >> today the national weather service upgraded the strength of the twister saying it was an ef 5, highest possible rating on the fu jismt ta scale, winds at least 200 miles per hour. abc news reporter marcy gonzales dwinz our coverage. the governor of oklahoma just here, touring the devastation. search and rescue crews were here through much of the afternoon, going through rubble, still, searching for survivors. debris waved in trees like a white flag of surrender.

this small community of moore, oklahoma nearly flattened by a tornado of unthinkable size and power. >> it's scary. i thought i was going to die for a while. and i held by dog close to me. just waited to see what is going to happen. >> the skies darkened, students at briarwood school huddled in hallways and bathrooms. >> i had to tell them this is not a drill. we need to be safe. and just play laied on body on top of as many kids as i could. >> all of the children at briarwood would survive but only a sole black board sticking out from the rubble. officials say seven children died there and more are still missing. this storm ripped homes to shreds. debbie and her husband, and

neighbor heard sirens and took shelter emerging to find this. >> that was the fireplace its just a house. it was my house for 31 years but it's just a house, we got to come out together that. is important. >> many residents say they got through that huge deadly tornado that tore through this area in 1999, they can get through this, the president promised federal money to help. in moore, oklahoma abc 7 news. >> the president says he's instrublgting his disaster response team to get victims in oklahoma everything they need right way. he addressed the nation today promising victims will stand the country, the country will stand with them. he signed a major disaster declaration, money should start flowing to victims soon.

>> our full focus is on the urgent work of rescue and hard work of recovery and rebuilding that lie as head. yesterday, i spoke with governor fallin to make it clear to oklahomains they'd have all of the resources they need at their disposal. >> search and rescue teams from across the nation are heading to oklahoma now smrks have arrived. you're looking at live pictures of the devastation in moore. you can see homes, buildings here have just been leveled in certain parts of the area where tornadoes swept through, covering at least 12 miles. california dispatched six search and rescue specialists one from the oakland team left last night. abc 7 news vic lee is live with task force three. >> this warehouse is where the menlo park disaster response

team trains. you can see firefighters behind me. it just so happens there was a training session here today. the team is one of three task forces in northern california. the others based as you said in oakland and one in sacramento. and a team member did go from oakland to oklahoma sort of check it out to see if of the reenforcements are needed but so far this team has not been asked to go. their expertise is to go and find people who are trapped. they are trained to find them under collapsed buildings and get them out quickly. they concentrate on collapsed schools and locations where there are lots of people. and they tell me they're aware of something called crush syndrome. >> when you have an object on a a piece of the body for a long period of time just for a

couple hours, it stops the blood circulation in that portion of your limb, let's say. well, if you're just to go in without any treatment and premed x of those victims, when you took that debris off of them, they're going to die of toxicity of toxins building up in the body when you just released it. >> other thing is that communication which is a big problem after a major catastrophe. these members are equipped so they can go set up systems and establish communications among their own members. this team not expected to get called to oklahoma this time but if they do, they'd be the second team from the bay area to be on call to be called to respond to that particular catastrophe. one interesting note i'd like to let you know about.

with winds in excess of 200 miles per hour which is beyond comprehension there. is a tornado watch for a wide area of eastern texas through northern louisiana, west and northern mississippi and western tennessee. that is in effect until 10:00 tonight. this movement is going to weaken. the storm goesing to fall part. another line of storms redevelop. basically into the area of alabama and mississippi. these storms will not be as intense as storms producing tornadoes yesterday. as storms produced funnel clouds today so, likelihood of more tornadoes tomorrow is greatly diminished. neert bay area we're experiencing some calm weather right now. under sunny skies, temperatures 60 degrees in san francisco. 68 in mountain view. san jose, 67. other temperatures into 70s in santa rosa and los gatos, first forecast calls for

we begin with problems on the new bay bridge caltrans are testing bolts on the eastern span but experts are questioning plans on their testing plan. >> john fisher is a professor and one of three experts on the independent peer review panel. last week, he was wo not involved in selecting them. he didn't say @ it then, but told the chronicle he thinks the plan to use this type of high strength rod was not well thought through and that boy have certainly urged them tyke another course. he seems all suspect bolts above a certain hardness level should be removed and plea ree placed but there are 2300 f them.
