making news in america this morning, the eye of the storm. incredible new video from inside the school which was slammed by that tornado. we're now witnessing the bravery and the devastation. plus this -- >> i apologize that women had to witness this today but women in our land our women have had to see the same. >> unspeakable violence on a busy london street. terrorists hacked to death a man then turned their attention to the camera. also -- >> i just keep thinking that what could have happened. >> a near tragedy when a giant piece of a plane comes crashing to the ground landing right on top of a woman's home. and an 80-year-old mountain climber. this morning he has accomplished something that few people ever have done a fraction of his age.

good morning. we are getting a better picture of the financial and human toll of the oklahoma tornado. damage estimates could top $2 billion. >> and the medical examiner has released the names of all 24 victims now. they range in age from just 4 months old to 70 years old. memorial services begin today ahead of the president's visit on sunday. and our coverage begins with abc's andy roesgen. good morning, andy. >> reporter: good morning, diana and john. when president obama gets here, he will see some signs of improvement. the telephone poles are starting to go up, and they have removed some debris but more than anything he'll hear some incredible stories of survival. [ screaming ] in total darkness this video gives us a look at the moment that destructive tornado bore down on briarwood elementary school. >> it's almost over. it's almost over. >> reporter: teachers and students emerge from the

bathroom where they rode out the storm to find massive destruction. miraculously, everyone at this school survived. >> oh, my god. oh, my god. >> reporter: but just a few miles away at plaza towers elementary school, seven students were killed. neither school had a safe room and one is not required by oklahoma law. only alabama requires a safe room in all schools. in all, 24 people lost their lives, 14 adults and 10 children including 2 infants. all of the missing have been accounted for, and yesterday the only rescues going on were for pets. sara and shane patterson lost their home but were able to salvage a few piece, jewelry and mementos from their childhood. >> the doll my great great grandma made me when i was a baby. >> reporter: the pattersons say they will rebuild with one major addition, a safe room, which is built either above or below ground and helped save so many lives here and elsewhere. >> just saddened.

just but i mean more happy too because we're all alive. >> reporter: and now the focus for so many here in moore is not on the devastating loss but on the precious things still being found like a daughter's baby pictures. >> priceless, i mean. >> it really is. >> you can really make sure that now she'll be able to have her memories too. >> reporter: well, they are the lucky ones. today the funerals start for some of the victims. the first up is a 9-year-old victim, a funeral for that victim today. diana and john? >> andy, you know, we hear these stories about people recovering things slowly but surely. what are the recovery plans now? >> reporter: well, the homeland security secretary, janet napolitano, was here yesterday and she outlined a very detailed look at what they plan to do. the overall, the first thing that they want to get done is getting the debris out of the way, getting the streets open. she has promised that her department and fema will do all that it takes to get moore on its feet. about 400 government workers are here now helping to clear away

the debris. they have also established a charity called ok strong disaster relief. folks can donate to it through united way, and that's really just the start. so when president obama gets here, we want to emphasize, he's going to see a lot of damage still. as you can see, this is a hospital that was torn up and plenty left to be done here in moore. diana. >> andy roesgen in moore, oklahoma, for us. thank you for that. all right, overseas now to that brutal terror attack in london caught on camera. a british soldier hacked to death in broad daylight by two men who were later shot and wounded by police. after the attack one of the men asked that his statement be recorded on cell phone camera. his hands are still stained with blood. he is carrying a knife and a meat cleaver. >> i apologize that women had to witness this today but in our land our women have had to see the same. you people will never be safe. remove your government. they don't care about you. >> amazingly one woman bravely confronted the attackers telling

them, "it's only you versus many people. you are going to lose." officials believe that attack was motivated by radical islam. happening today in monthall another legal step in connection with that alleged terror plot to derail a passenger plane. the two suspects will appear in court for a bail hearing. they are accused of plotting to target a railway line between new york and toronto. canadian police say their plans were to derail a train from the u.s. after it had crossed the border. a chechen immigrant who was a friend of boston marathon bomber tamerlan tsarnaev was killed during an interview with fbi agents. abc news has learned that ibragim todashev was about to sign a statement admitting his role in an unsolved triple murder in massachusetts two years ago when he suddenly lunged at an agent with a knife, and that's when he was shot and killed. a man is being held in washington state in connection with a pair of letters that were found to contain the deadly poison ricin. agents in hazmat suits were at matthew ryan bookett's apartment in spokane searching for

evidence. now, the letters were intercepted last week. one addressed to a judge, the other to a post office. bookett has also already pleaded not guilty. he is held without bond. president obama announcing a major change in the controversial policy that allows deadly drone strikes on american citizens. control of this program will be shifted away from the cia to the pentagon. the change comes one day after the government admitted for the first time that four american citizens have been killed by drones since 2009 in pakistan and yemen. an atlanta area woman has had a few sleepless nights after part of a cargo plane fell on to her home. homeowner pamela ware says two pieces of the aircraft tore up her roof before bouncing into the yard. she says it could have been much worse. >> if it had landed in here, because that's just sheetrock, it would have -- oh, boy, i wouldn't be no good. >> another piece of the jet's wing fell into the parking lot of a walmart. investigators say the parts came from a china air flight as it approached the atlanta airport. >> can you imagine? >> i cannot. that's one story --

>> some people win powerball. some have airplane parts fall through their roof. >> that's amazing. >> crazy luck. >> yes, it is. a simply incredible achievement this morning from the very top of the world. >> that's right. that's climber yoichiro miura. he's 80 years old and now the oldest person to reach the summit of mt. everest. he also got there at age 70 and 75, by the way. >> that's what you call an old pro. >> wow. >> what might be the most incredible part of this, he has had four heart operations since 2007. his record might only last a few days, though. listen to this, an 81-year-old guy from nepal is planning a summit attempt next week. >> on his toes. >> 80 years old. >> wow. and, by the way, when you reach the summit, you apparently age 70 years, so he's -- >> so he's 150? >> 150 at the summit. >> oh, man. >> four heart surgeries. >> wow. >> let's take a look at the weather across the nation. more stormy conditions on tap for western kansas into oklahoma and texas. almost the entire eastern third of the country will be muggy and rainy with thunderstorms in some of those spots.

suggested that the economic stimulus could be scaled back as early as next month. but earlier yesterday stocks soared after chairman ben bernanke told congress that the stimulus program would not be ending any time soon. a consumer alert and dangerous problem found in luxury suvs. general motors is recalling 27,000 cadillac srx models made this year sold worldwide. gm says the wheels might fall off. factory inspectors noticed the wheels might not be screwed on. only models with 18-inch wheels that need immediate repairs. no accidents have been reported. all right, new signs of the economic recovery. sales of existing homes jumped in april to the highest level since 2009. about 5 million already built their homes and they were sold last month. sales figures for the new homes are being released later this morning. and from new jersey, an investigation called "operation swill" targeted nearly 30 bars and restaurants in the garden state, half of them t.g.i. friday's. they accuse them of filling premium brand liquor bottles

nation could be treacherous. expect wet roads from florida, north to the great lakes and new england, also the be extra careful from oklahoma's tornado zone. and if you're flying, airport delays possible in charlotte, washington, d.c., philadelphia, new york city, boston and detroit. all right, as folks get refor memorial day, gas prices, guess what, they're spiking. the national average, $3.66 with prices climbing the last 17 straight days. drivers in the middle of the country are being hit especially hard. now, in the midwest prices have on average have jumped 66 cents this month. in minnesota prices hit a record $4.28 a gallon this week versus the rest of the country where prices are up between 2 and 12 cents. the jump there is being blamed on repairs at refineries. some members of congress are considering granting the woman at the center of the irs scandal immunity from prosecution, which would clear the way for her to testify about the case. lois lerner claims that she hasn't broken any laws before a house committee yesterday, then she exercised her fifth amendment rights and refused to answer any questions.

after lerner was excused, three other witnesses endured a six-hour grilling. all right, newly released dash cam video shows a violent encounter between the man accused of gunning down that prison chief and that pizza delivery man and a deputy last march. this may be difficult to watch. the suspect, evan ebel, was on the run when deputy james boyd pulled him over. boyd was bending into the passenger window when he was shot three times. amazingly, boyd survived, thanks mostly to his bulletproof vest. ebel was killed 35 minutes later in a shootout with police. police in philadelphia are asking for the public's help to track down two suspects wanted for a wild shooting. surveillance cameras showing one of the suspects entering a strip club opening fire with an ak-47 before he runs out back. he's also seen tripping a few times as he tries to carry out his crime. the man has been identified as 21-year-old henry pedigrew. he and the suspected getaway driver had been kicked out of that club.

>> dumb criminals. that's all i got to say about that. a new alleged incident of sexual misconduct in the military involving a sergeant charged with violating the privacy of female cadets at west point. michael mcclendon was charged with secretly photographing or videotaping at least a dozen women. he had been working with the cadets at the military academy until being relieved of his duties a year ago. complexities in the case delayed the formal charges. and the jury deciding the fate of convicted killer jodi arias will resume deliberating her punishment today. after pleading to the jurors for a life sentence rather than the death penalty. arias went on a jailhouse media tour and rather than presenting herself as contrite or remorseful or even responsible for her own actions she blamed the jury for her predicament. >> i feel -- i feel a little betrayed by them. i don't dislike them. i just was really hoping that they would see things for what they are, and i don't feel that they did. >> after about 2 1/2 hours of deliberations, jurors sent the judge a note saying they were deadlocked.

she asked them to try again, and they'll start that this morning. all right, disturbing new video has been released in the case of the missing utah mom, susan powell. recorded months before she disappeared, powell indicates her marriage was troubled, and she and wanted proof of their assets. the video shows powell going room to room in the family's utah home. >> covering all my bases making sure that if something happens to me or my family or all of us, that our assets are documented. >> powell disappeared in 2009. her husband was always the main suspect. last year he killed himself and the couple's two young sons. new figures released overnight show a dramatic drop in births to teen mothers. the cdc says teen births were down in every state except west virginia and north dakota in the last five years. many western states saw rates fall by 30% or more and in nearly half of the country teen birth rates among hispanics dropped by at least 40%.

and now time for some of last night's playoff highlights. here's espn. good morning, cassidy hubbarth here with your "sportscenter" update. game one between the pacers and heat in the eastern conference finals was an absolute thriller. with ten seconds to go in the game, pacers down 3, and paul george, he's up a long trey and hits it. off balance from way beyond the arc. he had 27 points, 25 in the second half. we would head to overtime. final seconds of o.t., lebron james, straight to the hoop for the game winner. lebron, a triple-double, 30 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists and the win. to hockey now, game four between the penguins and senators. third period, pens up, 5-2, and check out sydney crosby. nice backhand shot, excellent puck handling from sid the kid for his seventh goal of the playoffs. penguins up, 6-2. and then later in the third, pens on the power play. jarome iginla, one-timer, his

around the bay we will be below average at 60 in san francisco and 69 in san jose. the coast will be brick at 56 to 58. now the traffic. >> thanks very much and we will start off with a little bit of construction as we head into san jose as we take the drive along 280 northbound direction at 880 we have a transition shut down until 5:00 a.m. and southbound direction 280 to northbound 880 is closed until 6:00. our golden gate bridge shows construction as well and northbound side has construction so give yourself extra time. southbound traffic is moving along fine. >> fire officials hope winds today do not rekindle two brushfires that break identity in san -- broke out in san joset

burned an acre with no structures threatened. another brushfire burned seven acres but no damages or injuries in that fire. no word on the in the east bay firefighters are alert following a brushfire that threatened homes and businesses last night starting in a drive grassy area at old orchard road in martinez with flames close to an apartment complex and businesses but firefighters got the fire under control before it did damage. the fire charred an acre. >> a young oklahoma tornado victim will be laid to rest today. it is the first funeral since the storm on monday. the child died at plaza towers elementary school. the twister killed 24 people including ten children. it destroyed up to 13,000 homes, two schools and a hospital. president obam
