>> live from the kgo-tv broadcast center this is abc7 news. >> san francisco police are investigating the deadly collision between a garbage truck and bicyclist this morning in the mission district. the accident closed the busy intersection for hours. >> good morning, everyone, i am katie marzullo. >> i am kristen sze. a lot of questions surrounding the accident and the bicyclist who was killed. abc7 news amy hollyfield is at 16th. was this bicyclist wearing protective gear? >> witnesses say he was not wearing a helmet. it appears he wasn't.

it was especially gruesome. this neighborhood has reacted to it. someone left flowers and a candle here to remember the victim. >> it was a sight so horrible and grizzly it had quite an impact on witnesses. >> shock. shock. very shocked. >> jade was getting gas in san francisco at 6:30 this morning and a bicyclist crashed into a garbage truck. the bicyclist was killed. >> i don't know where he came from. [ inaudible ] >> it happened so fast. >> jose agrees that the bicyclist was moving quickly. >> he was too fast. too fast. the driver had green, he was not at fault. >> police have not said who was at fault but they say the driver of the truck is cooperating.

they have not cited him. the investigation is still underway but at this point, they say it appears the bicycle crashed into the back or the side of the truck. it appears the truck was turning right and the bicycle crashed into the truck. >> when the truck passed i only see this guy. >> the truck dragged the bicycle for a block ending up at 17th a block away from the body which lay in the middle of the treat for a couple of hours to the horror of those who passed by. >> so emotional and so hard to believe that this happened. >> the medical examiner has not released the name or the age of the victim. >> thank you, amy. we have developing news in san mateo, a woman out for a morning

walk has been hit by a construction van. we understand she is in critical condition. the accident happened near 8:30 this morning. the driver stopped and the victim in her 60's was using the crosswalk when she was hit. >> this morning, the san francisco police department is launching a new campaign to educate distracted walkers. the focus is pedestrians who text or talk on the phone rather than paying attention to the road. officers and student volunteers are stopping and talking with people about pedestrian accidents and cell phone robberies. they are soaring with thieves snatching phones and ipads before you can hookup. >> develop news from santa cruz the district attorney has released the outcome the investigation into the february murders of two police detectives. abc7 news reporter has never before released details from the shooting. matt? >> the district attorney released his findings on the

shoot death of the shooting suspect and the three officers and one deputy would fired shots on that day were prudent and justified. santa cruz county sheriff also released new details on what happened the day that the detective butler and sergeant baker were killed in santa cruz. butler and baker were investigating the suspect for a recent sexual assault and went to his home and talked with him at the back and he agreed to meet the officers at front. when they met he fired a handgun five times in three seconds, hitting and disables baker and butler who fired four more times at both before taking thais -- their weapons. three officers. came to the scene and there was a gun battle. he was wearing officer baker's personal am more. he was slot and killed. four law enforcement officers

were identified as officer clark and garcia and childs and a santa cruz deputy >> while being shot four brave and courageous law enforcement officers one from santa cruz county sheriff and three from the police department walked through the gates of hell and disknowledge whatted firearms as they were trained to do under such circumstances and ended this event. >> all four law enforcement officers were put on leave but are now back on duty. the santa cruz police department is also doing their own internal investigation through their independent police auditor and are expecting to release the findings to the city council for review when they are done. >> new this morning, cal fire is warning of increased fire danger over memorial day week. two brushfires broke out in san jose yesterday, one burned one

acre at 8:30 last night and we were over a seven acre fire before noon yesterday near singleton and the number of fires is up 50 percent from last year after one of the most dry winters on rod. they are warning everyone to avoid fires while camping or during other act outdoor activists. >> investigators in san jose are looking into the cause of an early morning fire that displaced a family that happened at a home just after 1:00 o'clock. at least one vehicle was damage ed. a resident thought someone was breaking in when they finally saw the fire. >> fire department sent us this photograph of another fire that broke out at a home shortly after midnight last night. a 40-year-old man living in the house was asleep and woke up to the smell of smoke in the

bedroom. investigators believe a discarded cigarette may have started the fire. >> nine-year-old girl is the first victim to be buried in oklahoma following monday's tornado. the funeral was held under stormy conditions, lightning lit up the sky this morning and rain and hail battered the areas still buried under piles of debris stalling the recovery process. abc7 news reporter has more from oklahoma. andy? >> we are in between storms right now but it has been a grim day to start burying the victims of the tornado and a tough day to try to keep the recovery going. a line of intense thunderstorms rolled through tornado-ravaged oklahoma today turning the sky into a scary looking orange and creating fears that another twister might strike. the heavy downpours will make for a messy cleanup today as the first of 4 funerals is held. the twister shattered whole neighbors in and destroyed two

elementary schools and now some who survived the tornado have released evidence of their horror. >> this is the sound of terror. >> it is almost over. >> and a teacher tryingalm the students as they huddled in a black bathroom. >> keep your heads down. >> when it was over, robin and the children saw the violence the storm did to their school. >> abc7 news returned to briarwood school yesterday and found the bathroom wall still standing. >> i was right here, a shelter that kept her and her students alive. another story of survival comes from the osteo borns -- osbornes who rush to their shelter before the tornado. >> i had 13 people in there. >> in some small place. >> yes, debbie, husband and neighbors crammed on top of each other inside this shelter all survived. despite the loss of life and destruction the spirit of optimism is evident from the volunteers ready to clean up and

sailor andrew bart simpson died. yesterday the head of the artemis racing team said they will not race if organizers do not make changes to protect sailors. >> todays officials will show abc7 news the work being done on the new bay bridge to replace broken bolts. we will get appear update on testing of the other bolts. this month, officials announced a plan to install large steel saddles to fix the problem of the broken belt. 32 bolts broke in march while being tightened but similar bolts since tightened have shown no sign of failure. officials say a landslide that destroyed part of a neighborhood in lake county has stabilized. the slide in lake port has virtually destroyed seven homes and forced residents to evacuate ten others. the ground was moving 1' to 2' a day but there is no get were movement since may 14.

>> covering an that rose, berkeley and all bay area, this is abc7 news. >> happening now, a two day nurse's strike is underway in san jose. it involves hundreds of registers nurses at regional medical center and good samaritan hospital. they walk off the job this morning at 7:00. the strike is over a contract dispute between the nurses union and the hospitals. they fighterring over wages, benefits, proposed pension cuts and staffing levels. >> we get our first look at cost of health care coverage in

with the wind, the same areas have been breezy and sfo gusting to 22 and half moon bay at 24 and everyone else is less than that. beautiful picture from sutro tower of ocean peach and it will be sunny but below average again, with a slight warming trend this weekend and the system that comes in and brings us a chance of wet weather on monday, the end of the holiday week. today, temperatures with the sunshine still from three to four to ten degrees below average and san francisco is going for a high of 61 on the roof at 59 degrees so we getting close. here is a look at the area of low pressure bringing us the persistently cool flow and here is what it does to our temperatures, mid-to-upper 50's along the coast to 61 in san francisco and mid-to-upper 60's around the bay and a few 70's inland. tonight, it will be cool again, at 49 in san francisco and san mateo, and 50 in richmond, oakland, andant beyond, the
