scary surveillance video as thieves set their sights on high end jeans. jeans that sell for up to $400 a pair are the targets and it is happening all over the world including here in the bay area. good evening. i'm carolyn johnson. >> and i'm dan ashley. five bay area jean stores have been hit and abc7 news reporter sergio is live outside one of the local stores that was robbed. sergio? >> yeah, well right now this store is all nice and locked up. investigators tell us these crimes are happening in the middle of the day. culprits walk in and make off with piles of pants.

for some designer jeans fans true religion is a favorite. >> oh yes. those jeans are comfortable. around $100 $200, pretty good. >> and the steep price tag may be why these jeans are a favorite items for thieves. this true religion store in livermore is the most recent to be targeted in the bay area. they were robbed on thursday afternoon. >> there were 10 individuals that entered true religion and basically overwhelmed the clerks and then they stole a bunch of jeans. it was approximately $5,000 worth of product. >> according to livermore police, five true religion outlets in the bay area have been recently robbed. livermore, mill pea ties -- mill pea ties and walnut creek. at each of the stores, the descriptions are similar. six young men and four young women. they all have the same escape plan. >> ran out and they waited for two vehicles that were in the parking lot for their get away cars. >> but bandits are not the

only ones scooping up the true religion merchandise. this was a -- was from a store in chico. you can see two men with jeans in their hands and on their way out of the store. a few years ago in england, these brazen thieves packed up piles of true religion jeans and threatened the store clerk before walking out. true religion did not want to comment on our story. bay area police tell us they have several leads, but they did not released any surveillance video of the local heist. in walnut creek,abc7 news. santa cruz police believe they foiled a heist by arresting a man they say was the master mind behind it. he is in the santa cruz county jail tonight charged with conspiracy to commit grand theft. ama dates is live from uc santa cruz where he worked. ama? >> reporter: police tell me he was actively recruiting accomplices and gathering

supplies for his master plan. and after searching his mobile home this morning they are extremely glad they were able to stop him. he is a man santa cruz police say was on a mission. that mission to pull off an elaborate grand theft at a local business in the coming weeks. >> think of it as an oceans 11 kind of heist. it was a lot of surveillance and reconnaissance that had gone into this. a lot of planning to actually carry this out. >> reporter: an informant tipped off police. they investigated and decided to take action early this morning. they arrested him and served a search warrant at his mobile home. >> we discovered a number of firearms that were stored inside a false wall inside the home. inside that false wall was another false wall that lead to additional firearms and ammunition that were seized in the home. >> look at what they found, rifles, shotguns, pistols, assault weapons and 48 in all. some licensed, many not.

some were modified and others violate state laws. the amo? we are talking more than 50,000 rounds. some believe to be armor piercing and they were high capacity magazines. so police weren't surprised to learn what he did for a living. foreclose to 30 years he has been -- for close to 30 years he has been a community safety officer at uc santa cruz working night shifts on campus. they say he was immediately placed on investigatory leave when they learned of his arrest. he will remain on leave until they learn more. he had no criminal past and there was nothing to suggest he would have targeted the university or any of the students. abc7 news. a former varsity football coach at richmond's kennedy high school has been arrested on nearly two dozen counts of child abuse. 51-year-old baron edwards is charged with committing sodomy and lewd acts against a child. edwards coached the school's varsity team in 2004 and 2005. he is being held on more than $21 million bail.

a big change in our weather as we head to memorial day weekend. sandhya patel is here now from live doppler 7hd. >> we have our own radar and it is not picking up moisture, but we do have a few clouds out there. nothing to bother anybody. what we are watching is check out the pacific. there is a storm that is developing and rain is a possibility. right now from our high definition sue trough camera we are looking at downtown san francisco. the temperatures are in the 50s. it is going to be a cool start to your holiday weekend. the rain possibility, we'll let you know about the timing and the changes at the newest -- that the newest computer models are indicating. >> thanks very much. dozens of aftershocks have shaken the town of greenville where the 5.7 magnitude quake struck last night. residents of greenville about 150 miles northeast of sacramento reported little

damage for an earthquake that size. items did fall from store shelves and several residents lost pieces of china and other breakable things. it was felt over a wide area. >> we were screaming and we hugged each other in the middle of the room. he almost got hit by a very heavy mirror. our cat is still traumatized. he won't come out from under the bed. >> one had a magnitude 4.9. seismologists will not know what fault the quake happened on for at least a few days. new video has emerged of a collapse of a busy bridge in washington state. look at this footage and you can see the bridge in tact and then suddenly right there it collapses into the skagit river. washington's governor says a nationwide search is underway to find a replacement span. everyone survived. rescuers pulled three people out of the river including 20-year-old bryce kenning. >> and it was like something out of a movie. there is a huge explosion in

front of me the ground under the bridge falling into the water. >> they believe a truck collision is the likely cause of the bridge collapse. they say the truck was carrying an over sized load when it rammed into a bridge support. the i-5skagit bridge was built in 1955 with a steel truss design. that is considered obsolete by today's standards. the collapse is raising questions about the integrity of bridges all-around the country and certainly in the bay area as well. by federal standards the golden gate and the dunbarton bridges are considered functionally obsolete because the design is considered outdated. the eastbound richmond san rafael bridges are considered structurally deficient because of problems with potholes and corrosion. >> pg&e calls it its $2.25 billion fine illegally excessive. eight people died and dozens

hurt and 38 homes destroyed when a natural gas pipeline exploded. the utility agrees a financial penalty is just, but they argue the cost of improvements and upgrades to the pipeline should be deducted from the penalty. and new at 11:00, the santa clara county board of supervisors may decide to include new homes to be wired for electric car charges. northern california ranks first in electric car ownership, but fourth in the number of charging stations. the board is drafting an ordinance to require all new homes to be built in santa clara county to be wired to accept a charger of 240 volts. >> there is a demand as gas prices continue to increase and they are concerned about the environment. we know more bay area people are going to buy electric vehicles and i think everyone will appreciate when they drive into the new home that they can put in a charger. >> the ordinance could be presented to the board in the fall maybe in september. >> a warning for anyone who uses a limo service to get to

millions of people are hitting the road this memorial day weekend and the traffic, it is still a little heavy even after 11:00 this evening for those drivers trying to make their way across the bay bridge toward san francisco. you can see the lanes that are backing up right now by those who do not have fast track. they blamed it under the drivers under the influence. abc7 news reporter alan wang is live at one in peaked moppet with the story -- piedmont. alan? >> we usually see the dui checkpoints at larger intersections just off the highway. but this weekend you could run into one in a smaller community like piedmont and there is a reason why. the police are quite aware that drunk drivers take back roads through the small communities like piedmont to avoid dui checkpoint. >> it is easier to traverse to go through side streets. you are avoiding the highway patrol and you stay out of the

main parts of oakland and you are avoiding the heavy presence of officers in a larger community. >> tonight piedmont is surprising drivers with the checkpoint. they pooled the sources of the police agencies and hayward is providing the breathalyzer and blood testing. >> we have everything to facilitate that. the only thing we don't have is a mobile jail. >> in the past three years 4,300 drivers have been snared in these alameda county dui checkpoints. >> when you get in a vehicle and under the influence it is like picking up a gun. that's the way they look at it. >> one dui arrest cost him $10,000 in legal fees and fines. >> basically i lost my job i had for four years. i was working at napa auto parts and i was the main driver there. >> other bay area police departments say they will be teaming up this memorial weekend to place dui checkpoint in places where drivers least expect them.

>> now funding for all of those police officers and over -- and their over time is being paid for by a federal grant and you can see the police dollars at work. most police departments will have extra police officers out there looking for drivers under the influence. reporting live in piedmont, alan wang, abc7 news. >> alan, thank you. a woman uh us coulded of trying to poi -- accused of trying to poison customers is delighted that she will not be charged. that's according to her attorney. she was arrested in april after witnesses say she swapped juice bottles in her bag with those in a december play case. lab tests show two bottles of orange juice contained vinegar. they originally thought they contained rubbing alcohol which can be lethal. and watch this, a woman who had had her phone snatched at the bus stop came to the rescue of the very thief who took it. it happened in columbia and was caught on video cameras. the man snatched the phone and then botches the get away when
