good morning, it's 8:00 i'm katie marzullo. let's start with a quick look at the weather with lisa argen. good morning. it is cool but sunny around the bay, 54 in oakland. take a look at the bay bridge but numbers are in the mid 40s, santa cruz and nearly 50 in san jose. starting out in oakland this morning, we'll look for more sunshine and temperatures to come up mid-60s. along the coast despite the

sunshine it will be gusty to mid-60s. we do have some 70s i but cool side of normal. we'll talk about where we should be but temperatures are going down for the holiday. >> katie: san jose police have arrested a 19-year-old man in connection with a machete murder earlier this month. they say she killed a man in a parking lot on blossom hill road on may 16. they identified as a suspect early on but still don't know why he attacked the victim. there is no known connection between the two men. the investigation into the 16th homicide this year continues. >> vallejo police are getting outside help during operation goodwill. the chp and sheriff's office are offering extra officers to vallejo as many as 15 might be

added to the 85 patrol officers to saturate areas that have seen frequent shootings and violence and gang activity. they say counties are learning to pool resources in these times of tight budget constraints. >> pg&e is calling the record fine that is being recommended for the 2010 san bruno explosion illegallyexcessive. they are recommending that pg&e pay $2.5 billion. 38 homes were destroyed when a natural gas pipeline exploded. they say it's fair but argues the cost of improvements pipeline should be deduct from the penalty. >> they are teaming up to put

d.u.i. checkpoints where you may not expected to find them. drivers who have had too much to drink may not be able to avoid police by sticking to the back roads this weekend. that a common miscon >> stay off the freeway. avoiding the highway patrol and stay out the main parts of oakland and avoid the heavy presence of officers in a larger community. >> 4300 drivers have been snared in a check pointed. it typically cost about $10,000 in fines and fees. santa cruz police believe they have foiled a high stabbings heist by saying they he was a mastermind. he is in jail charging with conspiracy to commit grand theft >> is a man that is on mission.

that mission is to pull off an elaborate grand theft in next couple weeks. >> oceans 11 kind of heist. it was a lot of surveillance that had con in to this. >> reporter: an informant tipped off police. they investigated and decided to take action. they served a warrant at his home. >> we discovered a number of firearms that were discovered in a false wall inside the home. and there was another false wall. >> what they found, rifles, shotguns, 48 in all. some licensed many not. some had been modified and the ammo we're talking about more than 50,000 rounds, some believe to be armor piercing. the police weren't surprised to

learn what he did for a living. he has been a community safety officer at santa cruz and working night shifts on campus. he was immediately place on leave when they learned of hits arrest. police say he had no criminal past and there was nothing to target he would have targeted the university or the students. >> katie: a former coach at richmond kennedy high school has been arrested on two counts of child abuse. baron edwards is charged with committing sodomy and lewd acts against a child. he is being held on bail. >> there have been dozens of aftershocks near the town of greenville where a quake hit thursday night. people in green violent which is about 150 miles northeast of sacramento reported very little

these brazen thieves packed up piles of jeans and threatened the store clerk before walking out. they didn't want to comment on our story. they have several leads but did not release surveillance video of the local heist. >> katie: a woman accused of trying to poison customers at starbucks says she is delighted she will not be charged. she was arrested in april after witnesses say she swapped juice bottles with her bag in a display taste. lab tests that they contained vinegar. oakland now as the distinction of being the most exciting city. that is according to the real estate firm movoto. it beat out hundred cities to

it's been breezy in morning from the east bay to san francisco. it's 52 in santa rosa. you were down to the mid 40s in parts of sonoma county and also in napa. more sunshine, not much in the way of change but increasing clouds that low cloud deck will bring drizzle tomorrow. still look at the possibility of showers. here is a look at the winds this morning. gusting at 18 in half moon bay. 21 miles an hour at half moon bay. concord up to 20 miles an hour. if you are planning for knotted not only the memorial day weekend. take a look at san jose for a high temperature, just 68 tomorrow. winds should be in the upper 70s for this time of the year. trend will go down after the area of low pressure moves out of town. then we recover. that is really the end of the upcoming workweek.

happen on the holiday. we'll tell you about that in a minute. >> katie: happening now in honor of memorial day, bay area scouts are paying tribute to fallen soldiers. keira is live in san bruno where the annual tradition is under way. >> we are so blessed at perfect timing. let me get out of way for you because the event is just beginning. take a look at that. color guard is coming in with the bagpipes bringing in the colors. it's the largest memorial day event in the country. can you belief that right here in the bay area. it's beginning right now and at 9:00 a.m., 3500 scouts from across the bay area will cover the national cemetery. they will put flags up every single soldier's grave.

there must be that many people in addition to the scouts. an extraordinary turnout for the servicemen and women who lost their lives while serving our country. one veteran described to me what this gesture means to him. >> if you take the time, you go to grave site to gravesite. there are times i had to walk away with the kvghz they've had as they are placing the flags on the graves. >> at golden gate at san bruno, for more 50 years at memorial day. this is one. largest national cemeteries known as arlington of the west. again, the largest memorial day event i'm told. these young scouts will place 113,000 flags to pay tribute to
