sparks and embers as live wires burn. tonight pg&e explains why several power poles caught fire today, one nearly killing a man. power poles all over the city of san francisco caught fire today. here's just some of the sites of smoldering wires. you can see how i wouldspread the area is, keeping crews busy scrambling across the city. to malls roman is on california street where power it out and streets are closed. reporter: about 3,000 people are

actually out of power at the time and now thousands are still out. and pg&e crews are working to repair a power pole that split and caught fire this morning. several power poles caught fire throughout the city, and while no one was injured, one handman had a very close call. the power poles like this one burst into names and sparks overnight. paul michael says this pole blew up this morning as he was backing his car out of his garage. >> i heard a small explosion, and i saw a spark coming from that area there on the pole. and then suddenly this wire just came down across the hood of my car. >> it was this high voltage wire that now lies roos his street. he says he stayed in the car and called 9-1-1. firefighters got a him free. he owes his life to disaster training. >> i took the training and i know from so many years of seeing wires down. >> pg&e repaired the pole and

strung new wire. a dozen homes were dark for seven hours. across town, power pole was smoking into the late afternoon. another was also damaged when it caught fire. this one on california at 25th 25th avenue, caused the pole to split and dangle over the street. it forced firefighters to close california between 24th and 27th avenues. battalion cleave says fire crews responded to the calls all over the city. >> reported nine poll transformer fires last night, in the last 24 hours. reporter: pg&e says wet weather was the catalyst that joined with dust to cause a short certificate on these poles. >> that can lead to it becoming muddy, and when there's that mud, that's a conductor of electricity. reporter: now, pg&e says while these incidents are rare they're not uncommon. they say they have a maintenance program to try to keep these lines clean so this doesn't happen, but apparently some get

missed or get so dirty so quickly the incidents are unavoidable. >> ama: in san francisco wasn't the only area experiencing powerline problems. there were several pole fires reported in san mateo county, including this one this morning in south san francisco. you can see the wind blowing embers from the pole. fire and pg&e crews responsibled to the scene. >> the drizzle that caused the power line problem ises not over just yet. let's check in with leigh glaser. >> leigh: probably see a repeat of the mist and drizzle overnight. the live doppler 7hd right now not picking up anything in the way of moisture. going a little closer. we're getting reports of cloud and fog near the coast but inland, lots of giant. what we are concerned about is this cold front, late-season cold front. it will be moving into the bay area for your memorial day tomorrow. we'll pinpoint the timing and let you know who will see more

of the rain out of this system around the bay area. take a look at that coming up. >> the coast guard rescued three people on a sinking raft in a bay. a map, woman and child wore on an inflatable raft that was sinking near at&t park. both the coast guard and san francisco fire department sent rescue boats. no word on the condition of the people but they are now back on dry land. alcohol may have been a factor in an accident involving several vehicles near burlingame that killed one person and injured ten others. the chp says raul padilla was driving and lost control this morning, hitting the center divider, killing 36-year-old woman inside the car. padilla is in the hospital in critical condition. the chp says it appears both he and his passenger had been drinking. another nine people aboard a party bus were injured when it collided with the honda. a third car was also involved. no one in that car was hurt. >> a crackdown targeting people who drink and drive is in full

swing across the bay area for the memorial holiday weekend. police will be holding sobriety checkpoints tonight in several cities. 21 police agencies in al immediate a county are pooling resources and 23 agencies in san mat day you're county are teaming up. other bay area police departments will be holding dui checkpoints in places where drivers least expect them. >> a family of four in san francisco is homeless tonight after fire damaged their house. neighbors called 9-1-1 this morning around 7:30 when they saw the moch and flames. crews say the fire started on the garage level of the house. they're still looking into a cause. 40 firefighters responded to the scene. they used the roof next door to help get closer to the fire. no one was hurt. red cross is helping the family find place to stay. ant ongoing residents want answers about safety following the drownings of two people in the candle during the past week. the latest tragedy took the life of a 13-year-old boy. witness says the boy slipped into the canal woot while

we'll say goodbye to that system and say hello this cold front, and looks like the timing will arrive early tomorrow morning, let's go ahead and take a look at the forecast model for you. 9:00 a.m. tomorrow, rain already down as far south as santa rosa. and you'll notice much of it gets hung up in the north bay. by noon, moves towards the peninsula, and then look at 1:00 tomorrow. another big swath of rain starts to move down to the gg -- the golden gate bridge, and then in the evening hours is when the thing should brake apart and weapon the east bay and south bay communities will see little moisture, too. most of the rainfall, quarter inch, will fall tomorrow, mainly in the north bay. here is a look at our highs for tomorrow. obviously with the clouds coming in and the moisture, they'll come down a little bit. 68, san jose. coast, still leave highs tomorrow in the upper 50s. 60s near the peninsula.
