>> i heard it is a pressure cooker and they have the bomb squad in here. >> a neighborhood evacuated over concerns there could be a bomb. first, a double murder in san jose. tonight the search is on for the suspect. good evening. i'm ama dates. the victims were shot near a kohl's store in san jose. abc7 news reporter sergio quintana has the latest on this developing story. sergio? >> reporter: just beyond the san jose police van right there is where the victim remains, one of the victims. the other was rushed to a nearby hospital and that's where he died.

police tell us both victims may be teenagers about 14 or 15 years old. this is a double shooting that happened in broad daylight about 6:30 this evening. it was behind a busy shopping center. one witness i talked with off camera told me she did not see the shooting, but she did see a group of men standing around one victim and the group was kicking him repeatedly. both men were shot with what they believe was a handgun, but no weapon was recovered. officers hope to track down a bicyclist who was seen speeding out of the area. >> a hispanic male, younger on a bmx bicycle. it is a person of interest. >> police tell us the victims may be teenagers and students at a local high school but have not yet confirmed their identities. officers also went door-to-door in this neighborhood hoping to find anyone that could give them more information in this on

going investigation. this is the 17th and 18th homicide in san jose this year. abc7 news. >> people returned to their homes after a suspicious object triggered an investigation. someone found a pressure cooker in the bushes outside an apartment complex. the bomb squad used infrared equipment and determined it was giving off heat. officers then went door-to-door evacuating residents in an apartment complex. >> i think it is good they are checking it out. it is cold and not fun being outside our home. we will wait as long as it takes. >> residents returned at 9:00 p.m. after experts gave the all clear. >> we now learned the identity of a victim killed in a crash in burlingame. a spokesman confirms that sara klein who performed under the name sparkly deville in the

crash. the car driven by her husband hit the center divide. the car spun around to face on coming traffic in the southbound lanes and was hit by a party bus. both klein and her husband were drinking. eight people on the party bus suffered minor injuries. the fatal accident is a reminder of how safety is paramount this holiday weekend. police agencies across the bay area are continuing saturation patrols and sobriety checkpoint tonight like this one in belmont at el camino real. the checkpoint will continue until tomorrow night. and now to meteorologist leigh glaser for our first check on weather. >> live doppler 7hd this evening is not active here locally. but that is along the north coast. yes, moisture is feeding in. you can see around the san francisco bay area we are picking up a little drizzle near the coast and low clouds. checkup around eureka as well as crescent city.

you can see the moisture starting to fight feed -- to feed in. it is going to spread moi's thiewr from the north coast to the bay area tomorrow. yes it does look like we will see parts of the bay area that will get wet. gusty winds are raging out there. sfo right now gusts up to 22 miles per hour. we will take a detailed look at when you can expect some showers coming up in a bit. >> the power is coming back on for hundreds of customers. it happened after 7:00 in oakland and piedmont. pg&e is trying to figure out why the outage happened. and in san francisco power is expected to be restored to hundreds of people after several transformers caught fire. nine trans -- transformers caught fire all over the city. a live wire dropped on a man's car while he was backing out of his driveway. the fires were caused by the build up of dust on the lines. >> there was a small explosion

and i saw a spark coming from that area there on the pole. suddenly this wire came down across the hood of my car. >> when there is a mist or a drizzle that we have seen today, that can actually lead to it becoming a little muddy. when there is that mud that is a conductor of electricity. >> in all about 5,000 homes were affected by the outage. a house fire in the crockett amazon neighborhood forced several people out of their home. the fire broke out about 7:30 this morning. flames began in the back of a garage that may have been converted to living quarters. the red cross helped the two adults and the two children find shelter. president barack obama is back at the white house tonight after a visit to tornado ravaged oklahoma. victims and supporters came together to pray, sing and heal. here is larry jacobs.

bridge. some have cracked. the chronicle report says a flawed new bridge is safer than the current eastern span. planners in washington hope to have two steel bridges alongside the span that collapsed near seattle. they hope to have the temporary structures in place three weeks. they hope to have it reopened by fall. a rafting trip in san francisco turned near -- nearly turned disasterous for three people floating off at&t park. just after 3:00 this afternoon the raft with three people on board began to drift and take on water. they sent out a rescue boat and a man, woman and child were taken to a gated area near third street and cargo way. still to come on abc7 news at 11. >> we had a mineful force. >> d-day from a world war ii veteran who helped storm the

breaking news out of san jose. police are on the scene of a fatal shooting on hayes avenue. it happened after 10:00 tonight wee. have a crew on the way to the -- we have a crew on the way to the scene and will have an update in the hour. >> the national symphony orchestra played the fight song of the marine corp and the other branches of the

military in washington, d.c. they remembered fallen comrades of all wars during the concert on the west lawn of the u.s. capitol. it is an honor nearly 70 years in the making. this memorial day an east bay veteran recalls his role during world war ii as he finally gets recognition for his bravery. abc7 news reporter lilian kim joins us with his story. lilian? >> dan franklin will receive a special honor awarded to veterans for what they did on d-day. in his words, it is a longtime coming. >> we were the elite boat in the third wave. we found out the first three waves were expebdable. >> he has vivid memories of d-day. he was 17 and part of a crew whose job was to deliver soldiers and supplies to omaha beach. it was a bloody day, mines everywhere. in fact, franklin's first brought sank after it hit one and the second landing craft was also blown to pieces. >> we lowered the ramp and

unloaded the stretchers and blankets and in backing out we hit a mine full force. of the 10 of us two of us survived. >> now 69 years later franklin will receive the french legion of honor medal considered france's highest honor. he applied nine years ago, but couldn't prove he participated in the d-day invasion. a year and a half ago he tried again and with the help of others was able to obtain the paperwork. among them a letter of accommodation from his lieutenant. >> discipline, skill, courage. >> franklin's children and grandchildren couldn't be more proud. they heard the d-day stories time and again which they say never get old. >> i can't believe he is here standing. i can't believe anybody is here standing that landed on that beach. we're proud of them, really proud of them. >> while he plays his role down it is a significant day in history. his hope is that future

generations think so too. >> i think it is important to know the sacrifice made by so many and that we were successful. >> franklin will receive his medal tomorrow during a presentation at the san francisco national cemetery in the presidio. his wife, children and grandchildren will be there with him. ama? >> thank you. and there wi be lots of commemorations around the bay area tomorrow. one of the largest memorial day events in the nation will be held tomorrow at the san francisco national cemetery in the presidio at 10:30 at the main post. the ceremony in san bruno starts at 10:30 a.m. and the local veterans and the boy scouts will be part of a ceremony at 1:30 at the chapel of the chimes in hayward. stay with abc7 news for complete coverage of memorial day celebrations starting with the abc7 morning news at 4:30 a.m. something to think about if you are pulling out the grill tomorrow afternoon. you might want to clean it first. researchers have found outdoor grills are a breeding ground for germs. in the united kingdom the

average grill has more than twice the amount of germs found on a toilet seat. contamination found e-coli, salmonella and listeria. hope you weren't eating just now. now to leigh glaser to tell us if there will be rain or if we can get out and grill tomorrow. >> clean it first, please. i think we will see some areas around the bay area that will not see that much rain until late, late in the afternoon if you see it at all. live doppler 7hd picking up low clouds near the coast. i want to take you near the california-oregon border. you can see the cloud band here. this is a cold front that is bringing parts to the bay area. you can see some of the rain bands ahead of the front. it should move into the north bay communities tomorrow morning and then slowly drag south throughout the course of the day. nice shot from the rooftop cam and the temperatures are fran 53 and we have a pair of 57's

for mountain view and san jose and 59 in is is is santa cruz. a little height fog on the span. 55 in fairfield and los gatos right now is 56 degrees. we will go with the clouds moving in. maybe mist and drizzle near the coast. that's where some of the breezes will remain overnight. rain are to thememorial day and mainly a north bay event. when we get a couple of days about a chance of precipitation and then a baying warm up back to the 90s. it will feel warm to hot. overnight lows with the clouds moving in generally in the mid to low 50s and we may touch on a few upper 40s in the north bay. santa rosa 49 and 48 for napa. let's get to the cold front. a late season storm. the latest forecast models are starting to break it down just a little bit.

nonetheless, it will start to move in. it does start to look like it will be more of a north bay event. th is 5 to be tomorrow morning and it is coming down from cloverdale to santa rosa. remember the east bay and the south bay are dry. you will see the clouds. th is 9:00 a.m. some of the moisture is coming down to santa rosa. 10:00 a.m. in the lunchtime hour. 1:00 still dry, east bay and south bay. this is more of a north bay event. until we get to fiches:00, 6:00 -- 5:00, 6:00, 7:00 and that's when it will venture south and focus and that's about it. trace amounts in the east bay and the south bay. in the the north bay possibly as much as a quarter of an inch. the models have backed off for the moisture tomorrow. 68 for san jose and we will cool things down a few more degrees. if you are out and about there

the breaking news is out of san jose. the police are on the scene and it happened just after 10:00. we have a crew on the way to the scene and we will have updates on the abc7 morning news at 4:theater. police -- 4:30. police are searching for a suspect in a double murder. the two victims are believed to be teenagers and students at a nearby high school. their bodies were found behind a busy shopping center. a suspicious object that turned out to be a pressure cooker caused the evacuation of an apartment building in mountain view around the san antonio shopping center. the bomb squad cleared the area after two hours. and an interest national burlesque star from the bay area was killed in a crash in burlingame. sara klein who performed under the name sparkly deville died when the car driven by her

husband crash need a center divider and hit a party bus. her husband suffered major injuries. lost in time. vials of moon dust were discovered after 40 years. the dust samples from man's first steps on the moon were found covered in earth dust. >> we have long been fascinated by the moon. almost a quarter million miles away, admiring it from a distance until that summer night. july 16th, 1969 the historic mission to the moon. >> 10, 9, ignition sequence start. >> apolo 11 lifts off from cape caw and a cape canaveral with neil armstrong and buzz aldren. >> one small step for man and one giant step foreman kind. >> he lifted the american flag. and armstrong thought landing on the moon and not walking on it was far more challenging.

but he also did something else. he collected 852 pounds of lunar dust and rock and now more than 40 years later another small step and giant find in a california storage closet. some of the lunar dust is gathering dust. samples were sent to 150 labs and thought to be sent back to nasa. so nasa is over the moon like the lab worker who found them. 20 vials from the moon from 1969. vacuum sealed in a glass jar container. the handwritten label is there, apolo 11 rock dust and the date, 24th of july. now returned nearly 43 years later and reminding us all of the moment on the moon. >> the lab worker who found the lunar dust was reviewing items in the lab's warehouse storage. a canadian study finds the more nervous you are in a job interview the the less likely you are to land it.
