making news in america this morning, wild, deadly weather. >> from flash flooding in texas, where hundreds of rescue calls related in dozen of people being brought to safety in boats, to snow measured in feet. millions are hoping for a better end to their holiday. president obama goes to the tornado zone in oklahoma, as we are hearing another amazing story of survival. the babysitter who saved five frightened children. and the new athletic department mess at rutgers university. the woman brought in to clean up the old one is at the center of another embarrassing controversy. and an unlucky end for one indy racer. what he saw as his bid for history at the brook yard ended with a ride straight into the wall.

good morning, everyone. it is memorial day. but you can expect to see more raincoats and parkas than shorts and flip-flops in much of the country. >> the long, cold winter isn't showing any signs of letting up just yet, even though the official start of summer is just weeks away. here's abc's preeti arla. >> reporter: on this memorial day, wild weather looks to threaten traditions. severe weather threatens the midwest today, from iowa to texas. it's already created massive problems. in south texas, three people are dead after flash floods. >> this is insane. >> it's nothing i've experienced before. i have never done this. >> reporter: rescue workers found the body of a 17-year-old boy swept away by the rapidly rising waters. the city was also swamped with 250 rescue calls. in 1 neighborhood, emergency crews rescued 54 residents mostly by boat. >> it is frustrating. but what can you do? you have to wait it out.

>> reporter: the mayor of san antonio warned people to stay off the roads because of the dangerous conditions. in parts of iowa, volunteers spent the holiday weekend laying down sandbags. all the rain caused a local river to swell and the water over its banks. >> it's really bad. i've never seen it this bad. cornfields. there's a park down here. it's all under water. >> reporter: heavy rains in the midwest and snow in the northeast. three feet of snow fell on whiteface mountain in new york. but in the nation's capital, stars lined the stage for the memorial day concert, honoring our nation's servicemen and women. and it could be another rough day in the midwest with a potential for tornadoes and hail. but some good news for the northeast, where temperatures are expected to dramatically rise over the next few days. john? >> all right. abc's preeti arla in washington this morning.

thank you. and the memorial day weekend won't be complete without the annual rolling thunder spectacle in the nation's capital. thousands of bikers go over the memorial bridge to the vietnam memorial. it's become a tribute to all war veterans. thousands gathered last night to remember those lost in the oklahoma tornado a week ago. the service was held in the first baptist church of moore, not far from the damage. governor mary fallin told her fellow oklahomans to look to god for answers. and earlier in the day, president obama spent about three hours touring the disaster zone. during a stop at the plaza towers elementary school, president obama said he was just a messenger, bringing the prayerful thoughts of all americans to those who had suffered. among the amazing survival stories, coming out of oklahoma, is one told by babysitter connie fogle. she had five little children in her care when she heard that tornado approaching. she gathered the kids in a closet and started praying. the house was destroyed around her.

but everyone survived. students at an oregon high school return to class this week after one of their own was arrested for a deadly plot. police say a 17-year-old now in custody will be charged as an adult in a columbine-style plot. here's abc's linzie janis. >> reporter: 17-year-old grant acord is behind bars because police say he was planning an attack on his school to rival columbine. >> this person had taken steps and had manufactured devices that could have been capable of causing significant injury or death. >> reporter: police say, it began late last week when they got a tipoff from a 911 caller, saying acord was planning to blow up the school and had asked friends to film the incident when it happened. bomb squad officers went to his house and discovered a secret compartment beneath the floor boards of his bedroom. inside an arsenal of information and journals, outlining the plot that would exceed the 1999 massacre in colorado. they say he even set a date.

>> plans, checklists, diagrams, inspirations, sources and a focus on re-creating the model of columbine. >> reporter: his stockpile allegedly included pipe and drano bombs, homemade napalm and molotov cocktails. police say they searched the high school and found nothing. the motive is a mystery. fellow students describe acord as a loner. >> he was you needed to make one. he was describing how to make one. thinking back, you know, should have brought up a little more suspicion. >> i was, like, just shocked. and, like, even more thankful that we're all still alive because he could have -- he had plans. he could have done it any day because he obviously was ready. just waiting for the right moment. >> reporter: grant acord is due in court on tuesday, where he will be charged as an adult with attempted aggravated murder. linzie janis, abc news, new york.

one of the main suspects of a gruesome murder of a soldier in london last week was arrested in kenya more than two years ago, accused of terrorist activity. kenyan authorities said he was on his way to train and fight with some somali militants linked to al qaeda when he was detained. once they learned he had a valid british passport he was released and sent back to london. two rockets in a southern beirut neighborhood tore through an apartment building, injuring at least four people. the attack is raising concerns that the bloody civil war in neighboring syria is spilling over to lebanon. a bit more about the weather from across the nation now. take a look at this big, red boomerang right in the middle of the country. that's where you may be able to see more tornado, if you can believe it. large hail and damaging winds. also, lots of rain across the northern border. from washington into northern california. >> temperatures are going to warm into the high 70s in the northeast. cool 60s in the northwest.

consumer confidence and jobs could influence trading later in the week. a popular ford pickup truck under government scrutiny. federal safety experts investigating ford f-150 pickups since drivers reported losing power during acceleration. they're looking into 400,000 f-150s with the eco-boost engine. and it's made from 2011 to last year. google is working to expand wireless networks to areas that just don't have them. "the wall street journal" reports the company is funding those networks in regions of sub-saharan africa and southeast asia. it could result in internet connections for 1 billion people or more. an ambitious plans allowing for new yorkers to ride bicycles starts in the big apple. 6,000 shiny new bikes in manhattan and brooklyn. the program is not without controversy. it's been a replacement of the bike racks.

at the box office, "fast & furious 6" races to the top spot, bringing in a staggering $99.5 million. my goodness. and that doesn't even count what it will earn today. chilly temperatures in chicago didn't keep bikers off the road on sunday morning. thousands of them came out for the annual bike the drive event. a 30-mile stretch of the celebrated lake shore drive for only bicycles from 5:30 in morning until after 10:00. >> pretty cool.

if you're on the road, rain can cause some slowdowns in the pacific northwest. expect flooding on the roadways in the nation's midsection. >> if you're flying, airport derelaysossible in seattle, chicago and minneapolis. all right. troubling allegations this morning against the woman hired to run rutgers university's athletic program after a scandal cost the men's basketball coach his job. just getting word of former players had accused her of abuse and humiliation. more from abc's gio benitez. >> i'm incredibly happy to formally announce her as the new director of intercollegiate athletics at rutgers university. julie? >> reporter: rutgers hired julie hermann to clean up the tattered image of the university's athletic department, after that video surfaced showing basketball coach mike rice berating his players during practice. now, a scathing report in "the new jersey star ledger" says hermann has a troubled past of her own. 15 women who say they were

mistreated by hermann at the university of tennessee 16 years ago, are now speaking out to reporter craig wolff. >> they describe a coach who was mean-spirited, in their view, who was demeaning, who called them names. >> reporter: 16 years ago, hermann reportedly quit as the woman's volleyball coach after her players detailed those alleged abuses in a letter. players say they gave it to school officials. wolff says he confronted hermann with a copy of that letter. >> her first response was, wow, that's not familiar to me. >> reporter: and then, there's this. just two weeks ago, when she was named rutgers athletic director, a reporter asked about a video mentioned in a 1997 lawsuit. an assistant coach said hermann fired her after she became pregnant. this is the video of hermann at the former employee's wedding.

>> to come back in february with any surprises. you know, the office and all would be hard to have a baby in there. >> reporter: when asked about the video -- >> you say there's a video? there's a video? there's no video. trust me. >> reporter: following the report, a new jersey state senator is calling for julie hermann's resignation. and governor chris christie wants to talk about this report. we're still waiting for rutgers to comment. gio benitez, abc news. the highway bridge that collapsed in washington state last week will be replaced by temporary spans scheduled to be completed in about three more weeks. a permanent bridge is expected to be in place by fall. i-5 bridge buckled when it was struck by a truck carrying an oversized load. the head of the ntsb called it a wake-up call to the state of the infrastructure. investigators trying to find out what caused a plane collision that brought down part of a highway overpass in missouri. a freight train broadsided another one.

the derailed train cars hit a pillar, sending an overpass crashing down with two cars on it. all seven people injured have been released from the hospital. a big roundi notre dame's football program this morning. top among them, who will be the irish's starting quarterback in the fall now that last year's starter, everett golson, is no longer enrolled at the school. he's been suspended for the fall semester after admitting to what he called poor academic judgment. >> i'll go out for the team. red shirted freshman. >> you're almost there with your red tie. as for last night's highlights from inside and out, we get those from espn. >> welcome into your "sportscenter" update. i'm dario melendez. game three of the eastern conference finals between the heat and pacers, sunday night in indianapolis. under a minute to play in the first quarter, lebron james doing what he does best, turning defense into offense. heat up 34-30. so, third quarter, the other member of the big three, dwyane wade getting into the action. they call him flash for a reason. he flashes through the lane with 18 points. heat go up 87-72. after the game, erik spoelstra

said he wanted to get lebron james in the post more. mission accomplished. he had 22 points. the heat win it, 114-96. they have a 2-1 series lead. here's something you don't see every day at the charlotte motor speedway. lap 121, a cable broken from the sky cam. coming on to the track. ten fans were injured. the leader, kyle busch, as you can see right there, runs into the cable. track crews come on to clean it up. meanwhile, under the red flag, kyle busch taking a picture because, remember, crews cannot work on cars under the red flag. but nascar made an exception, allowing any car damaged to work on it. what do you do if you're a driver? you eat. kyle busch would get back on the track. he finished 38th after blowing out his engine, which allows heaven harvick to take his 21st career checkered flag, winning at charlotte. that's your "sportscenter" update. i'm dario melendez. have a great day.

ever want to know what it looks like to see an end of a day at indy 500? look at this. graham rahal had just gone through seven laps. that's all he had to go until the end of his first indy win. his car spun out of control. here's a look at how he saw it. the dash cam capturing intense moments, as he holds on tight to that steering wheel and slams into that wall. rahal was not hurt, except for maybe his ego. he of course did not win. when it was over, it was driver tony kanaan who took the checkered flag. it was his first-ever indy victory. and it wasn't easy. there were a record 68 lead changes before the brazilian crossed the finish line and celebrated with the chug of milk. >> amazing being in second place. and just sort of going, all right. i'm not going to win this one. and the guy in front of you -- just cruise right by. get the checkered flag. >> not so bad. coming up next on "the pulse," a little penguin out of place. and the world's most famous

time to check "the pulse." we begin with sad news for angelina jolie. just two weeks after she told the world she had a double-mastectomy. >> jolie's aunt died of breast cancer. debbie martin was the younger sister of jolie's mom. she was 61 years old. >> jolie had the surgery after tests revealed she had a defective gene that increased her chances of getting cancer. her aunt reportedly had the same gene but didn't find out about it until she was diagnosed with cancer. on a much lighter note, the brits are betting big-time on just about everything when it comes to kate's soon-to-be born baby. >> that's right. the betting started just as soon as she got pregnant. but with the new heir just six

environmental length holiday weekend. matt? >> one officer is still at the scene. you can see the crime scene clean up is here, too, leaving in the next few minutes and there is crime scene tape in front of the house. this happened after 10:00 a man was found one gun wound and died at the scene. five hours earlier another shooting killed two on rhinehart drive. both victims could be tine, 14 or 15 years old and the double shooting happened behind a busy shopping center. a witness said she did not see the shooting but she saw a group of men standing around a victim kicking him repeatedly. both were shot with a handgun but no weapon has been recovered. officers hope to track down a bicyclist seen speeding from the area. >> younger, on a bmx bicycle is a "person of interest" but we do not know if he is the suspect
