happened in a rural area near china camp state park in san rafael. john is there live with the triumphant rescue. john? >>reporter: if the then-year-old morgan horse is resting in the stable on the ranch behind me this scene earlier impressive as the sheriff's department fair department and horse lovers all came together to save a struggling animal. fichlt wasn't looking good for buddy. half ton registered morgan treading water for his life. for more than 2 hours he was trapped up to his neck. in a 20 to 30 foot irrigation well at the echo hills ranch on north san pedro road in san rafael. right there to comfort him was his owner linda who had gotten the horse only 5 weeks earlier. >> i was stressful stressful to see your horse down in the well and not being able to get out. >>reporter: stooi some time before 4:30 in the afternoon buddy stepped on the wood cover on top of the well and crashed

into the water. caretaker greg who just returned to the ranch heard a strange sound. >> then i saw the top of the well kind of mangled so i run out and saw him straight ahea aheading water with the head u up. sprint back called 911 gnaw i couldn't handle it. >> i'm at the front. >> okay. >> nothing i'm at the chest. this horse buck up i'm in trouble. >> when the drama started buddy about 8 feet below the top of the well. san rafael fire departmentñr pump in 1,000 good of water to float to the top. marin sheriff's department and humane society newtown heads together and private crane was brought in to finish the rescu rescue. >> there you go. way to go. buddy. who died here. police say speed and most likely alcohol were factor in the crash. nearly a dozen people gather at the accident site as soon as police reopen hillside boulevard to traffic. 4 of the friends were in a horrific crash 12 hours earlier. mustang split in two. after it rear ended a honda and hit retaining wall. all 3 passengers were ejected. he saw the driver tend to one of them. >> he was like baby baby baby trying to get the girl attention to see if she was alive. and then i don't know the girl didn't respond become so he just went under the the broken thing in and he just went under and walked down like and didn't come back up. >>reporter: police identify the driver as 25-year-old pall diaz. he turned himself in 6 hours later. he has been booked in the san mateo county jail for vehicle already manslaughter and felony hit-and-run. the victim have been identified as 23 year old rose fell and 21-year-old jonathan boot and 20-year-old vasquez from daly=) city. the
