this morning, what led to that fire on the high seas? >> new questions this morning, that latest nightmare cruise comes to an adupt end. flight back home for passengers days before they thought they'd be going home. weather extremes. caught on camera, three tornadoes touch down in the plains and thousands flee fast moving flames in california. a new wildfire forcing new evacuation orders. midair scare. passengers scramble when a 200-pound man tries to open an airline's door in midflight. >> taking the plunge. a wedding party's soggy snapshot. we have the story behind the big picture taken on the big day which is going viral this morning.

and good tuesday morning. we begin with another cruise ship in trouble. a fire erupts on board sending thousands of terrified passengers scrambling out of bed. >> the badly scorched royal caribbean ship arrived in the bahamas after the harrowing ordeal in the middle of the night, but that dream vacation is over, and today those passengers are heading home. abc's devin dwyer has the latest. >> reporter: on the "grandeur of the seas," it was a startling start to memorial day. >> not a drill, not a joke. everyone is freaking out. >> reporter: passengers were roused from their sleep, told to put on life jackets and prepare to evacuate the ship. >> it was really stormy, so we honestly thought the boat might have been sinking, and we were just like panicking and running upstairs. >> reporter: the cruise ship was on fire. a blaze engulfed a bar and dining area at the stern burning for more than two hours until crews got it under control. >> the fire was much more

intense that we even could have imagined. the crew was spectacularly calm. >> reporter: the crew may have been calm, but some of the 2200 passengers described panic. the ship never lost power, but there was fear of the unknown. >> they started lowering down the lifeboats, so we were just in a panic. >> reporter: royal caribbean told abc news about 20 people aboard the seven-day cruise from baltimore took ill, but no one was seriously injured. the company's president flew to the bahamas to inspect the damage and meet with passengers. he promised to fly everyone home to the u.s. today. they'll also get a full refund and credit for a future voyage. now, the incident is another black eye for the cruise industry at the start of peak travel season. there have been more than 20 fires on cruise ships in the last 15 months alone. the ntsb and u.s. coast guard are now investigating. john? >> all right, devin dwyer in washington, thank you. breaking overnight an american air force pilot survived a crash off the coast

of japan. the f-15 fighter jet went down in the pacific this morning about 70 miles from okinawa. but military officials say the pilot ejected safely and was rescued by u.s. and japanese crews. 50,000 troops are based in japan. it is not clear what caused this crash. an eye-opening report this morning about chinese hackers. reporters gaining access to confidential u.s. military designs. "the washington post" reporting that the designs of more than two dozen major weapon systems have been compromised by the hackers giving china access to key technology including plans for missile defense programs in asia. major developments now from syria where rebels seem to be getting closer to receiving more support. the european union lifted its arms embargo against arms fighting to oust syria's regime. that move came as senator john mccain was meeting with rebel leaders. abc's alex marquardt reports from beirut. >> reporter: the group that organized that trip for senator john mccain, they told us that he crossed from turkey into

syria with just a small contingent of american security and was largely under the protection of the syrian rebels. we're also told that initially he wanted to go much deeper into syria, but in the end went just across the border. he spent about an hour meeting with five different rebel commanders who came from all over syria to plead with him for heavier weapons, a no-fly zone, and air strikes against the forces of president bashar al assad. they also repeated their claims that the assad regime has used chemical weapons. now, mccain has been one of the most outspoken supporters of arming the syrian rebels, and they made it clear to him they are not happy with the lack of u.s. support. alex marquardt, abc news, beirut. returning back here at home, breaking news out of southern california, a wildfire still raging out of control this morning after forcing thousands of people to evacuate. >> 5,000 residents and campers fled the mountains just north of santa barbara cutting their holiday weekend short. the fire was threatening 50 homes overnight.

it was only 5% contained. we will keep an eye on this breaking story throughout the morning. take a listen to that. that is the raw power of one of three tornadoes that touched down last night in kansas. they knocked down trees, damaged property including here in maryville. that's where you're looking at. so far this morning, no reports of deaths or injuries. storm sirens sounded through the night, and more of this severe weather is expected over the next couple of days. parts of iowa underwater this morning after getting slammed by torrential downpours. floodwaters rose quickly in the northwestern town there overtaking the fields and surrounding homes. many homes are so swamped they had to be shut down. some cars and trucks didn't stand a chance. and we may have just marked the unofficial start of summer, but take a look at that. you wouldn't know it in some parts of the northeast. here is a scene from upstate new york. that's white face mountain in the adirondacks buried under three feet of snow. safe to say their memorial day barbecues, pretty much a bust. >> not so much. >> don't think so.

checking today's weather on this back to work tuesday, that snow will likely do some melting today with rain moving into the northeast this afternoon. further west some severe storms to the great lakes all the way down to texas. tornadoes and flash flooding also possible there. there will be showers in florida and in the northwest. >> temperatures there will be well below normal though southern areas can expect average readings today. with over $2 billion worth of damage to be cleaned up, it was anything but a holiday in the oklahoma tornado zone. >> members of the military used their memorial day yesterday to help clean -- that's right -- the cleanup efforts. some removed debris while others helped hand out supplies. 1200 homes in moore were destroyed by last week's storm. ten times that many suffered damage. two days after he went to oklahoma to see the tornado damage, president obama today heading to the jersey shore. he will visit asbury park, which has restored its boardwalk after it was destroyed by superstorm sandy. president obama will be joined by new jersey governor chris christie. they went on a similar tour just after sandy. that event seemed to pay political dividends for both

men. and yesterday the president marked memorial day by paying tribute to the nation's fallen war heroes. heoopart in the time honored tradition of laying a wreath at the tomb of the unknowns and urged americans to remember those still fighting for the country and talked about the shift taking place in the war zone. >> a transition is under way in afghanistan, and our troops are coming home. fewer americans are making the ultimate sacrifice in afghanistan, and that's progress for which we are profoundly grateful. >> in keeping with his own tradition, the president also walked among the graves of the war dead from iraq and afghanistan. coming up, every airline ticket could soon cost you more, but the airlines are against the plan. plus, skyrocketing prices as barbecue season gets into full swing. which cut of meat will save you the most money? and the midair scare. a passenger trying to open an emergency exit door in the middle of a flight.

welcome back. the market opens again today after a long holiday weekend. and investors will be watching to see if last week's losses will stick. if they do, that could cause concern that this year's rally is weakening. so far this morning stock futures though are up. well, it could cost us more to fly. this time not the fault of airlines. the obama administration wants to raise taxes on air travel by 14 bucks a flight. the administration says that's needed to cut the deficit. the airlines say that will curbtail travel and hurt the economy. the cost of having a

backyard barbecue is up. the average price for a pound of sirloin is up 7% since last year. and ground chuck, the most popular cut for hamburgers is up 19%. chicken prices also ing. boneless chicken breasts up 4%. but if you like pork we've got good news. pork chops are down 3% since last year. the reason for all the hikes, years of drought. it costs more for farmers to feed their livestock. big money at the box office this memorial day weekend. spending 317 million bucks. the big take "fast and furious 6" followed by "the hangover 3" and "star trek: into the darkne darkness." >> really. oh, it sure does look wonderful on florida's beaches. that was memorial day. the lifeguards had to be kept on alert by the risk of strong rip currents. in one county -- get this -- there were over a hundred rescues. >> wow. >> wow. >> beachgoers were told if they couldn't swim, they shouldn't go past their knees. checking the road conditions, florida, the usual afternoon showers. it could be a wet afternoon drive in the northeast. and if you're flying, airport delays are possible in kansas city, chicago, detroit, new york, philly, boston and miami. all right, we're getting new details this morning on the foiled bomb plot aimed at an oregon high school. >> the 17-year-old accused of stashing bombs in his bedroom had been discussing explosives with other students before his arrest. he heads to court today as his classmates head back to school.

here's abc's linzie janis. >> reporter: new revelations 17-year-old grant acord may have dropped hints to classmates about the massacre, police say, he was planning at his oregon high school. police say they found a stockpile of homemade explosives in the teenager's bedroom, pipe bombs, napalm bombs, molotov cocktails along with detailed plans, even a date for an attack. now we're also learning acord spoke to classmates about making bombs. >> he just walked up out of nowhere and asked if we were talking about bombs, and we all just gave him a funny look, well, no, and he kind of kept going on about the different materials you would need to make a pipe bomb. >> reporter: stone says he wasn't alarmed at the time. >> it was a little strange, but he's also a fairly strange kid. >> reporter: but police say someone did report strange behavior calling 911 late thursday night saying acord was planning to blow up school and had asked friends to film it. investigators rushed to acord's

home and found an arsenal hidden under his bedroom floor. he will face charges in court on tuesday, the same day his classmates return to class. police say no bombs were found at the school. linzie janis, abc news, new york. a man who gave passengers on an alaska airlines flight quite a scare makes his first court appearance today. 23-year-old alexander herrera is said to have made some unusual statements on a flight yesterday morning from anchorage to portland. then he allegedly tried to open the plane's emergency door, and that's when the other passengers leapt into action. >> they took him down, they held him down until the flight attendants could get there with restraints, and those passengers continued to help restrain this individual who was wanting to get out midflight. >> experts say he would not have been able to open that door midflight because of the pressure holding it would have kept it from going outside. well, the suspect in the colorado movie theater shooting will find out if the judge accepts his insanity plea. james holmes is accused of killing 12 people and injuring

70 others in the denver suburb of aurora. that was last summer. pleading not guilty of insanity is likely his best chance of avoiding execution. rutgers university is standing by its incoming athletic director despite her being under fire because of how some former players say she treated them. julie hermann is denying knowledge of a letter written by players on the tennessee women's volleyball team that hermann coached 16 years ago. in that letter, hear mane is accused of humiliating and emotionally abusing players. she says she's never considered resigning and the school's president is backing her. it was an anxious holiday weekend for dozens of visitors hanging out at a casino in atlantic city. two elevators got stuck at the rebel hotel trapping 50 guests. firefighters responding to the first call had to cut off power, pry open the elevator door and drop a ladder down the car. it took 45 minutes get everyone out one by one then another elevator suddenly stopped at the same hotel and they had to do it all over again. >> wow. a russian apartment building
