news. another problem on the new bay bridge. more bolts are failing. good evening. i'm dan ashy. >> i'm carolyn johnson. this time it is the new bridge's bike path. this is a live look at the bridge tonight. the latest trouble spot is also on the new eastern span. abc7 news transportation reporter heather ishimaru is there live for us. heather? >> carolyn, i just got off the phone with cal trans' bay bridge spokesman and he tells me this problem was discovered well over a year ago and has already been repaired. he says that it's on the bike path, that the bike path railing is bolted into the path itself in such a way to allow for expansion and contraction by a matter millimeters depending on the weather. what happened was that a protective cap was not welded properly which caused the cap to break. but again he says that has been repaired and the problem has been solved and he will take us out there tomorrow to take a look for ourselves. earlier tonight we were out on

the bridge or rather underneath it to take a look at a much bigger problem. >> you can see the gap. >> this cal trans resident bill kasey knows how to spot a broken bolt. there is a gap between the bottom of the nut and the base plate. the good bolts are flush. the broken ones popped up after being tensioned in march. that's when 32 of the set of 96 cracked and now the sight of the broken bolt is being prepared for a retrofit. the side by side rectangular spaces have been cut out of the concrete. that's where a steel saddle in purple in this cal trans drawing will sit on top of the bolts.ill then be it will then be cinched down and held tight by steel wires that thread through the saddle and wrap under and around the concrete pier cap. >> they will take these off and then you put it right over the top and come down through and it will strap the whole thing down nice and tight. >> the concrete is being

corded to allow threading of the steel strands. these indentations will make a tight connection with new concrete when it is poured to encase the saddle cinching strand. there is no firm time line for completing the prep work andl s. >> everyone asks that question, but it is hard to tell you right now. >> cal trans says so far none of the other bolts has shown signs of breaking. an update on testing and retrofit will happen at a special meeting tomorrow afternoon. the toll bridge program oversight committee are in charge of the new bridge and they hoped to be able to tell us tomorrow whether or not the new bridge would open as scheduled on labor day weekend. now cal trans says that is looking unlikely. cal trans would rather wait for the results of the testing and the review by the federal highway administration. on treasure island heather ishimaru, abc7 news. thanks very much. now to the weather quickly. still may see sprinkles out there. let's get the latest from

meteorologist sandhya patel with a live doppler 7hd. >> our radar is picking up a few light showers around ukiah and the cloverdale area and very light. as a matter of fact, ukiah is not even reporting measurable rain. i am watching this area here. it is heading toward point arena. we are not completely done yet as you look at a live picture from our emeryville camera. the clouds are gathering and looking out toward the bay. temperatures in the 50s, the 60s and your morning commute will include some slick spots due to sprinkles. we have ma we have major changes in the forecast and that includes the heat. i'll be back with the details in a minute. carolyn? >> thank you. a san bruno father who lost two of his daughters in a crash the day after thanksgiving could face criminal charges. investigators today recommended a vehicular manslaughter charge against tandel. he was driving on highway 101 last november when he fell asleep and crashed his suv after a holiday shopping

spree. two of his daughters were ejected and died. he also hit a chp officer who suffered minor injuries. investigators say he drove despite getting just three hours of sleep in the previous 24 hours. prosecutors are now reviewing the case. tonight the postal service is asking for your help to find the person who ripped off one of their trucks two weeks ago. surveillance video from an oakland business shows the burglary happening near the intersection of market and 36 36th streets. look at the top part of your screen. the thief hops into the back of an unmarked postal truck carrying mail and rummages through the contents and then runs off. the postal inspectors are offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. royed five businesses at an antioch strip mall today. it started in a building's attic at 8:00 this morning and it spread so fast. a jeweler who spent seven years at the mall lost hundreds of thousands of dollars. the damage is terrible.

two barbers say they are not sure how the bills y the bills now. a nail salon and a hair salon and a burger joint were destroyed. neighbors are feeling uneasy after a mountain lieu lie yen was spotted in -- mountain lion was spotted in a backyard near a tree. abc7 news repo alsto alston is there live. john? >> some neighbors won't look in their backyards the same way again. this mountain lion disappeared before people even realized it was there. now wildlife officials are warning people to be careful about their small children and their animals. >> it is pretty common to see wildlife as you drive up the hills of lafayette. but neighbors are not used to the type of animal that turned up over the weekend. this is the photo that is making the rounds. a mountain lion perched in answer oak tree. >> i was like, oh my god, this is crazy. >> malik wright took the picture saturday afternoon about 4:30 in the back of his

aunt's home. at the time he thought he was photographing a squirrel and didn't notice the big cat until the next day. >> he is like, you can't go out there. i just looked at the picture i took yesterday from what he thought was a squirrel and it ended up being a mountain lion in the background. i was a little freaked out. >> it was e-mailed to neighbors including colleen who keeps three chickens in her backyard. she is extra cautious during feeding time. >> yes, today i heard russ lig in the oaks and i was not going to turn my back to the oak. >> she wonders if her dog maggie sensed the mountain lion a few days ago. >> on saturday night she went nutso and she doesn't usually. she is used to deers and turkey. >> mountain lions lions are native to the park lappedz, -- park lands, but rarely attack. if you encounter one stand tall and slowly back away. now neighbors are keeping their pets inside and not letting their children walk alone through wooded areas.

john alston, abc news. >> we are getting a clearer idea if the damage caused by a 5.7 magnitude earthquake up north. officials say the quake damaged 50 homes and caused more than $1 million in losses. the earthquake hit last thursday in greenville. it was about 150 miles northeast of sacramento. dozens and dozens and dozens of aftershocks followed. the bay area is now a seller's market with homeowners reaping the rewards. home prices across the nation increased nearly 10.9% over the last year. the bay area doubled that at more than 22%. in fact, only phoenix saw a greater increase and just barely. bay area cities are not expected to reach the historic highs of 2005, but they are still increasing at a rapid pace. antioch saw a 28% rise in home prices over the last year. union city is up 34% and east oakland home prices jumped 51%. the housing market surge helped drive stock prices up. the dow-jones-average closed

110 points higher. also boosting the market, consumer confidence. people are more confident in the economy than at anytime since the great recession. a grandmother has been arrested on suspicion of smuggling drugs from mexico, but her family says she was framed. the woman from arizona was taken into custody at a military check point170 miles south of the border. the 42-year-old mall do gnaw dough was in mexico for a funeral with her husband. at the check point police said they found 12 pounds of marijuana under his seat and arrested him. he contacted the u.s. consulate and was immediately released. the police then accused her and took her into custody. her husband says they are after bribe money, but he is optimistic after testifying today. >> i got to see my wife today for about 15 minutes. i told her about all of the support and she had a big smile on her face. >> i am more hopeful now than i ever have been. we don't think they have a

this is what it looks like in the middle of a tornado. storm chasers are out and about and drove into one in smith county, kansas to capture this incredible video of the latest to touchdown in the midwest. here it is from farther away. look at this thing. the twister caused major damage throughout the state. it tore apart 25 homes in the community of marysville.

thankfully it caused no injuries to people as ferocious as it was. in maryland a fire set off by a crash between a freight train and a garbage truck ig riw about 12 hours after it started it set off an explosion that could be felt for miles away. 15 train cars carrying chemicals derailed and ignited the fire. the fire department says they will let the flames burn themselves out. one person, the garbage truck driver was hurt. the ntsb is investigating exactly how it happened. an evacuation at disneyland after a small explosion in toon town. it happened about 5:30 tonight. it appears somebody put dry ice in a plastic bottle and then dropped it into a garbage can. witnesses say it sounded like a gunshot. no one was hurt. in fact, the garbage can wasn't damaged. police are not sure if it was a prank, an accident or done on purpose. the san jose shark season came to an end with a loss to the los angeles kings.

we'll give you the highlights and the sports in minutes, but a minutes, but as the sharks lost during game seven of the western conference playoffs, a lot of hopes for the season went down the drain. but not only was the playoff run a thrill for fans, it meant a big boost for bars and restaurants in downtown san jose. that's where abc7 news reporter alan wang is live tonight. alan, winning is good for business. >> yes, it was a tough loss for everyone including the bars and restaurants down here. it is amazing what one sports team can do to stimulate the economy. the san jose sharks have consistently filled up the restaurants and the bars down near hp pavilion. despite their success, the lockout still put a dent in business. >> things were not looking good for the sharks early on. >> sharks are down. >> i know, but we're upright here. >> despite an early 2-0 deficit, the towers of beer kept coming at the brit in

abc7 news. justin bieber is not above the law. sheriff deputies are investigating after people in his calabasas neighborhood near los angeles complained the pop star frequently speeds and drives erratically putting children in this gated community in danger. former nfl star keyshawn johnson spotted bieber speeding and said he jumped into his car and block his ferrari. bieber's representative say bieber was not driving at the time and that contridicts what witnesses say. they want reckless driving omet obama had someber. explaining to do at the white house when a smudge of lipstick ended up on the shirt collar. he called out the culprit and the aunt of one of the guests to make sure no one, including the first lady, got the wrong idea. gee -- >> auntie right there, look at this. i just want everyone to

this is a gorgeous view as we look toward the trans america pyramid. we are seeing clouds rolling through. we will see spotty morning sprinkles and summer-like heat expected with a wide range of conditions from the coast to the inland. here is a disturbance that may produce a few sprinkles in the morning hours. it is one more disturbance, but the upside to these disturbances bringing in the cloud cover and the sprinkles keeps the fire danger down. so overnight, we will see the cloud cover and as we head into the early morning hours a lot of cloud cover may see some spotty drizzle around. you will see that around the san mateo county coast and then the clouds clear much like this morning and it will be mostly sunny for your wednesday. temperatures are about the same. after that all bets are off. you will go from 75 tomorrow and the numbers will be soaring to the mid-nineties range by saturday, sunday

still pretty hot, and then we start to see the dropoff early next week. overnight temperatures in the 50s. quite comfortable, but watch out for drizzle and sprinkles tomorrow morning. you will run into the possibility of some wet roadways. give yourself a little extra time. afn highs, 73 in san jose in the south bay and 72 for santa clara and 74 in santa cruz. nice looking weather by the afternoon. 72 in palo alto. downtown san francisco 64 degrees and another breezy one in the sunset district. 60 degrees and lingering clouds around dald in the north and in the north bay, upper 50s to low 60s along the coast here. most other areas are in the 70s. 77 in santa rosa and 76 in napa. temperatures are running cooler than normal. the inland communities are in the mid70s for pleasanton and 75 in livermore and here is a look at the game time forecast. the giants are taking on the a's at at&t park tomorrow
