big disappointment for a class of new grads in san francisco. >> they are out thousands of dollars and nearly missed out on a once in a lifetime experience. good evening. i'm dan ashley. >> and i'm carolyn johnson. new at 11:00, the graduation trip lowell high school students saved and worked for all year long isn't going to happen. >> at least not the way they planned it. leslie brinkley is live in san francisco to explain what happened. leslie? >> well, at 23 students here at lowell high school will get to take a consulation trip to italy, if you will. but they are still out an awful lot of money as their original tour company bailed on them. italian teacher judy bransburg had her students primed for a trip across italy after graduation. >> we have been waiting for this trip since we were freshmen and started our italian program. >> but their boston-based tour operator called the european institute suddenly stopped

communicating. >> they just stopped answering my phone calls and my e-mails. i was sending them daily. >> and then on may 27th they found out their tour company went bankrupt and were out $120,000. >> they talked to the attorney general's office and the california attorney general lawfned an investigation, but they learned they were just out the money. and then a contact with the san francisco mayor's office connected them with another tour company called world strides. the ceo decided to kick in $50,000 of his own money to rescue the would be student travelers. >> it is sad when kids are left without a trip when they are looking forward to it for such a longtime. >> reporter: there has been much cut from their itinerary, but at least now they will get to italy. >> reporter: that means he is very happy. >> a man shot by police officers in oakland today has died. this happened just after 2:00 near ricci street. the crime reduction unit tried to stop a car with three men inside. the men got out of the car and ran. police say one man was armed and the officer chasing himtenet felt threatened and started firing. the man was hit several times and he died at the hospital. the two other men were arrested. police say a gun was recovered at the scene. san jose is reacting to a spike in violent crime with a community meeting. a chance for neighbors concerned about their safety to strategize crime prevention. ama dates was at that meeting in south san jose and joins us live with new details. ama? >> carolyn, residents were given tips on how to protect themselveses and how to make it difficult for a burglar to get in your home and given the opportunity to discuss their frustrations.

>> for the first time in 34 years i am not feeling safe. >> cindy joined a room full of san jose residents in the santa teresa library for a crime prevention meeting. it was hosted byolra. colra. he feels the stress of the constituents. >> we have been feeling it for a longtime. the feeling over the weekend exacerbates it. >> reporter: three people were killed including two students from independence high school. the teens were shot to death on sunday evening in the parking lot behind the kohl's shopping center. they believe the city simply needs more police officers so she spoke up during the meeting. >> my question is which i didn't get answery is when are we going get officers. are they hiring? >> they are in the process of bringing in 21 community service officers which are not full peace officers and they are going to be handling cold calls and burglaries and those types of things so the guys with the guns can do the serious work. >> we are budgeted for 1100 officers and we have less than

a thousand. that means we do have the money to have officers right now. money is not the problem. the problem is that people don't want to work for the city of san jose and they are leaving for other departments. >> the meeting to discuss these issues needs to continue whether times are good or bad. ama dates, abc7 news. the sheriff's department is looking for other victims of a former high school coach accused of molesting at least one child. police searched a pittsburgh home connected to baronned words. baron edwards. the 51-year-old is charged with rape and lewd and lascivious acts of a child under the age of 14. edwards is a former football coach at richmond kennedy high school. a hayward teen has serious injuries after getting hit by a car in anteing yo. police say the 18-year-old was ridings a rip stick, a skateboard, snowboard hybrid. he can through a stop sign. the teen broadsided a car and was thrown about 30 feet. he was not wearing a helmet. he was airlifted to a nearby hospital. the mist and cool weather

has left us and some changes are coming as we inch to the weekend. sandhya patel is here with our first look at weather. >> yes, dan. showing you live doppler 7hd you notice the skies are clear on live doppler 7hd with the exception of a few patchy clouds just west of the santa rosa cloverdale area. as you look at the rooftop camera you can see the skies are clear and the temperatures right now are in the 50s. 54 san francisco and 56 in oakland. only 52 in half moon bay and 57 in san jose. bun -- bundle up in the morning. it will be a cool start. the bay area temperatures will be heading into hot territory. we will be back with a weekend preview in a few minutes. carolyn? >> thank you. cal trans spoke about a series of problems plaguing construction. at the top of the list the broken bolts that threatened 20* push back the opening day of the labor day weekend.r day that turns out to be a series of issues they are dealing with.

alan wang is live for us on treasure island with an update. alan? >> reporter: carolyn, today we heard about some new problems that are separate from the issue of replacing those long bolts that snapped back in march. cal trans revealed it has been dealing with several other issues over the years including bad welds in the tower base and corroded sky way 10 dispons a new one. the suspension deck was misaligned with the yes, sir bough island deck by a couple of inches. >> a project on this scale is so big and complicated that you encounter a lot of challenges. >> reporter: all of these issues have been corrected, but the remaining problem is whether cal trans can fix about 30 crucial bolts that snapped in time for the scheduled labor day opening. >> i don't think there is anyway to sugar coat it. that means we will need a little more time. >> reporter: commission members say they will open their decision at a july 10th meeting. crews will be installing large, steal cables to hold

down the stabilizers that will prevent swaying during an earthquake. the problems on the 6.4 billion dollar bridge will now be the focus of an independent review board. its goal is to make cal trans more transparent to the public. >> recently public confidence has gone way down. >> reporter: abc's structural analyst says cal trans knows how to fix the bridge, but they need help communicating with the public. >> what is much more public is a confidence issue and that will take more time. you have to earn people's trust. >> reporter: at 11 wong, abc7 news. >> they are suing the builder of the luxury highrise. the attorney of the homeowner's association says it is defective and it is flooded during the storms. they are suing for more than $4 million in damages. we have reached out to the builder tmg partners for comment. a story you will only see on the news a san francisco woman tells us how she nearly became a victim of chinatown

con artists. today the city held a public awareness rally to warn people about swindlers who claim to ward off bad luck by blessing jewelry and cash. the con artists target single women in crowded areas like chinatown. in october they targeted the wrong woman. this woman went to police instead of becoming a victim.bee >> number three told me that there is going to be calamity in my household. your son is going to die in three days and my husband is going to get really ill. the more valuables i bring the better off my family is going to be. >> she lead undercover police to a farmer's market where they caught the suspects coning another woman. that victim handed over $47,000 to be blessed by the thieves. all four were convicted for grand theft. the california wildlife officers would have to use nonlethal opings -- options. there have been two mountain

as we see a down sloping wind. this is a wind flowing from the land and bringing the hot air to our inland valley. still a sea breeze near the coast. those numbers will remain in the comfort zone along the coastline. we will keep it comfortable. livermore not mild, it will get height. 90 tomorrow and 90 on friday and 95 on saturday. then downhill after that. overnight temperatures in the upper 40s to the mid50s. when you leave home tomorrow you will want to grab a jacket or sweater. it will be on the cool side. patches of low clouds around. other than that the skies will be clear. for your afternoon 76 degrees in san jose in the south bay and 80 for morgan hill. 79 on the peninsula. 70 for millbrae. mid70s palo alto and mountain view. along the coastline it is clear and breezy. 61 half moon bay and 601 in the sunset -- 61 in the sunset district. nothing but blue skies and a warmer day in the north bay.

the storm made landfall with winds up to 70 miles an hour along mexico's southern coast wednesday. over the weekend moving inland. barbara is blamed for at least two deaths. one of them, a 61-year-old man from colorado who was killed while surfing. the atlantic hurricane season begins on saturday. more tornadoes continue throughout the day today. several twisters like this one in nebraska reported late yesterday, and forecasters say more are possible. the main threat area extends from missouri to oklahoma. abc's ginger zee looks at all the violent weather we've been having from right there in the storm zone. >> reporter: skies are angry across the plains and the midwest again. look at this video. the power of rain torrential floods busting through the doors of a college in iowa. they had five inches in just two hours. multiple security cameras caught the wall of water as it made its way through campus. almost 40 tornadoes reported tuesday, this one churning over

the land in kansas. look at that upward motion. in amarillo, texas, power lines down from strong winds and tons of hail. in western pennsylvania, cleanup after two ef-1 tornadoes. and then that monster in mid-michigan. rated ef-2, it was one of six confirmed tornadoes in michigan. in goodrich, ashley's house was destroyed, but her family is fine. >> i just threw clothes over my kids' heads and held them. we were just praying for safety. it was over before i knew it. my kids are safe, and that's all that matters to me. >> reporter: there's been over 1,000 reports of severe weather in just the last week, more than 250 tuesday. so far with this outbreak, flooding and lightning have been the biggest killers. a photographer captured these incredible moments as storms made their way over downtown chicago. and back in moore, oklahoma,
