live from the kgo-tv broadcast center this is abc7 news. >> a san jose elementary school is shut down as police investigate the shooting death of a young man, the 20th homicide in the city this year. good morning, i am eric thomas. >> i am kristen sze. police searched for the gunman in the area surrounding the elementary school. matt? >> this is across the street from the elementary school, and the fatal shooting comes after three other shootings across san jose overnight.

another day, another homicide in san jose, a 4th this week. a man, 19 or 20, was shot after 5:20 this morning. the elementary principal canceled classes as the road was blocked off for the investigation. >> at other times we have had things like this happen, it has been distressing for the kids and it is hard for them to concentrate in the classroom. the frustration is spreading across the city as more violence took place. there were three other drive-by shootings, first at virginia south of downtown, followed by at hayes in south san jose and on center in east san jose. cars and homes were hit by bullets but this shooting across from the elementary was the only homicide. >> patrol units were stretched to the max but we have special operations division. they will hit the hotspots for gun violence and we will quiet the streets.

>> police believe the victim was headed to work this morning and are investigating if it is related to the other shootings. parents are frustrated with the violence. >> i don't like them to see this kind of thing but when it happens, what can we do? nothing. >> this is the 20 the homicide of the year in san jose and right now san jose say they have no suspects. >> last night, concerns residents in san jose turned out a at prime prevention meeting and they filed into the library do voice concerns and be heard. the police officers association points out the rise in crime comes as budget cuts for as reduction in the number of officers on the streets. >> in oakland a warehouse fire led police to an illegal growing operation. the fire broke out at 51st avenue and east 12th before 4:15.

firefighters has it out in ten minutes but found a number of marijuana plants inside and officials are looking for the cause. >> on the peninsula, home video shows firefighters battling an early morning house fire in san mateo shot by the firefighters. you can see the orange glow above the front door of the home which was under construction. no one was living there so no early detection. crews didn't get the call until 12:40 from a person living a quarter of mile away. firefighters are not ruling anything out. authorities say their investigation into a deadly crash this weekend in the delta is being hampered by uncooperative 9-1-1 caller and conflicting accounts. five were killed including two from the bay area on sunday, an s.u.v. plunged into the water off lower jones road outside stockton. one person in the vehicle survived. divers have pulled the bodies of five people from the water. the coroner -- the coroner has

identified the bay area victims. it is still not clear what led to the crash. developing news from the east bay, we have newntor a man behia frightening robbery attempt at a popular walnut creek shopping area. this is the man who allegedly accost add -- accosted a woman. amy hollyfield? >> it happened in this parking lot and what we have learned is that security officers had him and let him go. security officers at the walnut creek nordstrom saw this man trying to ditch his shirt and cap in a potted plant, and they told him he could not do that and escorted him from the store. what they didn't know he had just tried to problem one of their customers in the parking garage. >> she got near the door and a

man came up from behind her and grabbed her, there was a short struggle. >> another customer walked in the garage police say it spooked the man and he ran off without the purse. he want back in nordstroms the cameras got a good shot and police hope someone will recognize hip and give them a call. [ inaudible ] >> her friend was robbed of a purse in the same parking lot and this break in, in december, when someone broke the glass and stole thousands in jewelry but police say they consider robberies at broadway plaza a rare occurrence. >> that area is covered by security cameras. it is well lit. there is a security patrol. it is safe. >> customers found the news unsettling. >> i am surprised because i don't think of walnut creek as an area that is high crime but you do hear the banks and things

so you have to be vigilant. >> we think it is safe down here and that stuff happens we have to be cautious. >> police say some tips include being aware your surroundings when you are in one of the gar garagaes and maybe even ask a security guard to escort you. >> thank you, developing news in the investigation into ricin-place the -- letters sent to mayor bloomburg with another letter intended to the white house. katie marzullo? >> law enforcement sources tell abc7 news it is a third letter similar to the ones superintendent to mayor blomberg but it has not tested positive for ricin, intercepted at a white house mail sorting facility. it never reached the white house. it has been taken to a laboratory for further testing. >> there was a letter that threatened us.

>> two letters addressed to the mayor of new york city, opened at a mail sorting facility in manhattan. the other was opened at offices in washington, dc, used by mayors against illegal guns group. >> we take a lot of security measures, as you know. the men and women that on the mail, for example, even they are well trained. we have procedures for something like this. >> the pro gun control position is the focus of the sender's anger and a source says the author wrote they would rather be killed than give up their guns. the executive director of the group opened the washington, dc letter and tells abc7 news he is fine but three emergency responders did experience minor symptoms. experts say it is a very serious situation. >> if someone accidentally ingested some of that ricin, it could potentially kill them depending on the strength. >> investigators have not identified any suspects but we have learned the letters were postmarked in shreveport, louisiana, and the mayor says

the city is working with federal agencies to find whoever sent the mail. the mayor is undaunted in his gun control efforts. he is unafraid of the threats. >> there are people who i would argue do things that could be irrationale, do things that are wrong, but it is a very complex world out there and we just have to deal with that. >> there have been several other attempted ricin attacks this year, a man was arrested for sending ricin-laced letters to president obama and a senator early this spring, and just last week, another man was charged with trying to use the poison to kill a federal judge. >> if you took a jacket with you this morning because of the chill, you will be ditching it this afternoon. >> and we can ditch it right now with warmer temperatures in the bay area and i will check with mike nicco on the roof, so, is it getting warm yet, mike? >> it is nice. there is a little bit of a breeze coming in off the bay rather than the ocean.

>> happening now, san francisco mayor lee is celebrating the launch of the first tunnel-boring machine opening a path for the central subway project with the first pieces arriving five weeks ago. when they start putting things together, the machines will bore tunnels 1.5 miles long from south of market to chinatown. >> tesla has revealed the

location of the new super chargers being installed in a massive expansion of its network. tesla will triple the number of super everyone whatting stations by the end of next month, and by the end of the year, tesla owners will drive from los angeles to new york charging on tesla's network of super chargeers only which will be loathed every 80 to sun miles. the c.e.o. says that the charges will be faster lowering the time from three hours of driving to under 25 minutes with additional super chargers in california, across the country, and even canada. >> microsoft announced they will try to fix what they got wrong to last year's radical makeover of the ones operating system. many users have been confounded by windows 8 which uses interactive tiles rather than the familiar icons used for decades. microsoft announced they will offer a free update later this year that will bring back the start button in the bottom corner and let users move the tiles. a firm claims the redesign led

around morris town, new jersey, since him day was finally caught by authorities this morning. here he was on a tree in a condo complex. crews darted the bear. still, he kept police and onalongers at bay if four hours before he finally fell to the ground. he landed in a safety net. the 350-pound animal believed to be three years old will be released back in the wild. he certainly had quite an adventure in the philadelphia suburb on tuesday. he was spotted taking a dip in a local lake the >> graduates of san francisco high school are leaving for a trip they nearly missed when the tour company went out of business. early this month, boston-based we tour operator the european institute went bankrupt and the graduates were out $120,000 in all, when the san francisco mayor's office connected them with another tour company called "world strides" and the c.e.o. kicked in $50,000 of his own money. >> we have been waiting for the

a.m. tomorrow which will create choppy waves. the bay wear is quiet. our winds are only around 17 as sfo and 14 at half moon bay and everyone else is less than ten miles per hour. that is indicative of high pressure taking over and the winds become light and advisoriable if not out of the north the bay waters and breezy. the microclimates are all over the place from 55 at ocean beach, to downtown, the forry building, at 64 in san francisco right now, and our warm spot is walnut creek at 70 and santa clara at 70 along with pittsburg and everyone else is in the 60's, but for half moon bay at 55. going failure, we have sun and are breezy and warm and the heat peaks this week, a throw day event and when it tapers next week we will still be warmer than average. down in the south bay, mid to upper 70's and maybe around to 80 in morgan hill, and low-to-mid 70's, delightful on the peninsula, 61 at half moon bay and ocean beach where we
