lot more overnight. here's what i want you to know about what we know about what happened today. i'm standing in front of a community college. you can't see much here because it is so dark at this hour. but it is route here in el reno, one of the first spots that was affected by the tornados. it ripped this out and just basically took the inside out. i think that's how a lot of okies are feeling here, like they have had so much torn from them and torn apart-time and again. and now five new reported tornados right here. i was watching these storms come toward the city and i got this sick feeling in my stomach. i thought, how could it be happening again? really to track in that same way, but this time going straight to the city. as we were getting out we got stuck in gridlock like so many others. i-44, i-35, i-40. huge highways here and almost shut down. one storm chaser, and i know this guy, brandon sullivan, he was trying to get away from the tornado because it was wobbling.

what a volatile situation. we knew this was going to be a violent day, and unfortunately it came together to be just that. 80,000 without power and a long night, very wet, ahead. >> thanks for that harrowing report. and please stay safe. it is a truly shocking sense of deja vu as ginger described in oklahoma tonight. amidst this stormy chaos, highway patrol officer betsy randolph spoke with us and gave us the latest update on what she's seeing unfold along highways where an alarming number of people were on the road when the tornados hit and are now stranded in their vehicles. but first she confirmed that two of the multiple fatalities tonight were a mother and her child. >> our big corridors that go through our state were affected. we had a lot of crashes, overturned vehicles. a merth and a baby lost their lives out here tonight. they were swept up in the storm. so just a really heartbreaking event tonight following the tragedy from last monday. >> the mother and the baby who
12:43 am
you say were swept up in the storm, did they drown? were they in a car accident? what happened? >> well, it happened they were traveling on the interstate and their car was sucked up into the tornado and they were sucked out of their vehicle. and thrown from their vehicle. in fact, one of the troopers got to what they thought was just an overturned vehicle. they were told by somebody that was traveling with them, not sure if that was a family member or what, that told them the mother and child were missing, that they'd been sucked out of the vehicle and sucked up into the storm. so a search then ensued and the trooper found the mother and the baby a short distance, a short time later, and both of them were deceased. >> oh, that's tragic. other than those two fatalities which are tragic enough, have you heard accounts of other casualties? >> i have heard of some others. i don't know how many others. i can't confirm any of the numbers right now. the two that we worked, the

mother and the baby, are the only that the highway patrol worked to the best of my knowledge. we've had multiple crashes, mutual bell overturned vehicles. >> what advice do you give to someone driving down that highway, maybe they have kids in the car, suddenly a storm like that approaches? do you stay in the car, try to get off the highway? >> a couple of things we tell people. number one, never to drive into an area that immediately turns black. if the clouds turn black or the inside of your vehicle immediately fogs up, that's an indication that there is a really rapid change in the temperature. and when that happens, we know that there could be a tornado present. we ask you to immediately move to the shoulder of the roadway. and then believe it or not, abandon your vehicle. because especially tonight, the mother and the child that were swept from their vehicle, sucked out of their vehicle, your seat belt is no match for a tornado in those high winds.
12:45 am
we know that the lower that you are to the ground, the safer that you're going to be. we tell people, get off the roadway, get out of your vehicle, and seek shelter in a low-lying area, especially a ditch. the tornados that we've had recently in oklahoma, the only place that you're sure to be safe is underground. coming from highway patrol officer betsy randolph, our thanks. joining us now is veteran storm chaser reid timmer in el reno, oklahoma, and was swept up amidst the monster storm as it was bearing down earlier this evening. he's still tracking the swirling disaster and paints a vivid picture of the latest in a string of disastrous oklahoma twisters. >> in this you could tell it was going to be a monster supercell. it looked like a pancake, basically, all the ingredients in place for strong tornados. when that happens, the storms are very efficient at producing tornados.

it develops a wall cloud, the lowering that hangs down below the base of the storm. started wrapping very rapidly and these suction vortices, miniature tornados that are spinning around like a cell and a multiple vortex tornado started developing very close to the vehicle. violent motion and it turned into a half mile wide tornado. we're driving after it, we have these armored vehicles called the dominators and they dropped to the ground with hydraulics and have spikes that go into the ground. we deployed and had our hood ripped off the vehicle. >> but reid, you're an experienced storm chaser, yet you sustained pretty severe damage to your truck. >> yes. our truck's pretty beat up the last three or four days. we're going to have to go back tomorrow and grab our hood and put it back on and we'll be ready to go. we know the ones you can get really close to. in this case we stayed a little bit further back. >> reid, i know a lot of the the concern in this cluster of storms centered around i-40, the
