>> good morning, everyone. thanks nor joining us on this sunday morning, june 2nd." i'm carolyn tyler. let's start with a quick first look at the weather with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> good morning, carolyn. we are looking at mostly clear skies. a little fog along the coast and that's bringing in the cooler air today. the sea breeze will pick up. right now we are talking about upper 50s in santa rosa, 56 in napa. it's 60 in fairfield. numbers in the mid-50s from union city to los gatos. yesterday we were well into the 90s inland. temperatures will afternoon will range from the 70s to the upper 70s to near 0 around the bay. a little bit more tolerable. toast side we will have the fog,

some of it clear. some will be patchy from the san mateo coast. and the big timecology comes in tomorrow. still numbers come down about 5 degrees for you today. a look at the cooling trend, how long it will last, coming up. carolyn. >> developing news from overnight. police in vallejo are investigating after a shooting left two men dead. it happened on lynn field drive near the intersection of whitney, just before midnight. police say a man walked into a small party inside a garage and opened fire after an argument. two men, ages 41 and 52, were killed. a 16-year-old, 25-year-old were injured. they were taken to the hospital, expected to be okay. the suspect remains on the loose. he's described as a hispanic man 201020 and 30 years old with a gotee. he was last seen wearing a black baseball cap and blackjack. we will have much more on this story coming up in a life report at 5:30.

>> later today an ash rift will try to figure out what caused a massive tree to come crashing down in san jose. it crushed vehicles and injured several people. one person end up being pinned under the tree. abc news property has more on the story from san jose. >> reporter: rescue teams used chainsaws to cut the massive tree apart and get to the injured. a couple people were on this lawn bowling field when part of the tree came smashing down. >> the tree shook a little bit out of the blue and we looked up and it started coming down. there was a horrific crack. it was terrific. so i heard -- people were saying one for your life. >> two members of the bowling club got caught under the branches. one was able to get out quickly, but the other was pinned. other park visitors rant to help. >> an elderly lead had a whole bunch of branches toward her and her ankle was snapped in half.

she had a big cut through the front of her head. >> a san jose fire department spokesman said her injuries looked bad, but they were minor. she was taken to a local hospital as a precaution. the massive okay actually split in two. one-half fell on bowling field and the other crashed on to several cars parked on the street. one man was sitting in his vehicle. >> he had one foot outside, one foot inside so he was half in and half out of the car. he said as soon as he heard the tree falling toward him, he dove under his car. >> at least one person was taken in the hospital also with minor injuries. the president of the club said they were hosting a defend for the defensive coaching staff of the san francisco 49ers. all five of the coaches escaped injuries. >> just unbelievably lucky that only one person was seriously injured. >> so what caused the massive okay to split in two? an arborist has been dispatched

to try to figure that out. >> today a volunteer search party will conduct a search for a teenager with a traumatic brain injury whose been missing for nearly two weeks. the 19-year-old shawn city has not been seen since may 21st when he told his dad he was going to the park. his family said shawn is recovering from a brain injury he was suffering last year. his last call was traced within a two mile radius of baker beach. a strong earthquake hit central taiwan overnight, killing a person and injuring at least 18 others. [foreign language] >> these videos recorded the shaking as had happened. the 6.2 tremor struck in the heart of the country. it triggered rockslides in the mountainous areas. one of the rocks crushed a car, killing the driver.

taiwanese media is reporting damage to households all across the country from the quake. no tsunami warning was issued. firefighters hope cooler temperatures today will help them get a handle on a wildfire burning in kith earn california. more than 1,000 homes were ordered to evacuate yesterday as winds fueled the fire just north of santa clarita. the fire is 20% contained after burning 55-acre. one person arrested after a fire broke near interstate 280 in the afternoon. it took about an hour to bring it under control. >> eric: concerns wishing westward that it would jump the creek area. there is also some live fields on the other side. but the problem to that this are

apartments and residences on the other side. we sent units there and assigned them structure protection. >> about five acres burn. no buildings were damaged. oakland city officials will hold a news conferenc t week to address the growing problem of side shows in their city. you know side shows leak this one features drivers speeding and doing doughnuts in the street. they draw a big crowd. a woman was shot during a sideshow in oakland early yesterday morning. 106th avenue and mcarthur boulevard. they say side shows occur almost every weekend. >> they know the police are on and off work or something because they were down there for a good, let's say, two hours and it took something like this before the police came. >> the 25-year-old woman are on life support. two men were also shot. one was released from the hospital and the other is still there in stable condition. city leaders say a news

conference is scheduled for tomorrow. san jose police are investigating that city's 21st homicide of the year. the fifth in seven days. a man was found stabbed to death in this carport near santana row. investigators have no suspects in custody. the string of recent killings have fronted acting police chief, larry, to call an emergency meeting. he did that yesterday with his staff. part of the plan to curb violence is to put more cops on the street. they are conducting police patrols this weekend with about 40 extra officers. the community has been acting for this action, designed to prevent violent acts from happening. patrols are being concentrated in areas known for gang activity. now for a story you will only see on abc7 fuse. the charges against a man accused of murdering a well-known south bay millionaire

were dropped. we were the latest to bring you the information in the murder investigation. this is the picture of shawn city, the missing teen. but here's the story on this murder investigation. abc7 news reporter lisa has the details. >> look as he left the red jumpsuit behind thursday as he walked out of the santa clara county jail a free man. he was accused of breaking into a mansion with four other people, robbing the multi-millionaire and then killing him. prosecutors admit anderson was never there. >> mr. anderson had been admitted to valley medical center a couple hours before the murder began and was held there in one of the medical units until about 12 hours after was it over. >> the reason anderson was picked up and charged in the first place is because investigators say they found the 26-year-old's dna under the victim's fingernails. anderson's attorney isn't so sure about that. >> that makes the assumption

that the dna evidence was collected, tested and analyzed properly. >> we do not believe there's any problem with any of the lab work in this case at all. it will be an incident of finding out where the two individuals' paths crossed. >> abc7 news learned anderson suffers from mental illness, has a brain injury and is an alcoholic. >> he has significant limitations and those didn't cross. >> still the prosecution tense to buildets case against four people, including two reputed gang members and two alleged prostitutes. they remain in custody. abc7 news. well, it was a little on the toasty side yesterday. meteorologist lisa argen has a preview of her accuweather forecast. >> yeah. and we are looking at a sea breeze picking up today. it's nice and clear out there right now from the sutro camera. the sun coming up at 5:47.

pomegranate seed from turkey. it's in a frozen berry fix sold only at cosco. at least 30 people with hepatitis infections will been reported in five states, including california. >> average number of days between the time you eat the food and you become sick is 28 to 30 days. >> the company has taken the products off the shelf and is giving the centers for disease control and prevention a list of everyone who bought it. hepatitis inflames the liver and it's usually transmitted by contaminated food and water. this morning more than 2,000 bike calists from all over the world will leave from san francisco on the first leg of a 535-mile journey across california to raise a.i.d.s. awareness. they will ride from san francisco to santa cruz today as part of the a's lifecycle. the journey lasts seven days and

it will eventually take the cyclists all the way to l.a.." it is considered the world's largest annual a.i.d.s. fundraiser. the money benefits the san francisco a.i.d.s. foundation and a.i.d.s. services in los angeles. here's a health statistic that might surprise you. california has the most tuberculosis case necessary the nation, one in five. the three cities with the highest t. b. rate in the state are here in silicon valley. lyanne melendez tells us why. >> these counties are up there when it comes to the number of cases of tuberculosis in america. >> we have a diverse population, we have international travelers, we have tech entrepreneurs that travel globally. >> according to the santa clara department of public health 90% were in foreign-born residents. philippines, vietnam, india,

china and mexico. a person's socioeconomic status has nothing to do with it. >> someone can be exposed to tb in one place at one place in time and it doesn't grow up and progress to disease until ten years later. >> more and more antibiotic resistent and when you have that it becomes a real problem. >> he led this year's california tb control meeting. 24 counties were represented here. all of them agreed the federal government should be ordered to have an adequate supply of drugs to treat tb. right now it doesn't. >> if we don't have a supply of medication, we can't treat the disease. >> honda will go back to congress to ask for more funds which, in the past, have been cut. children and young adults accounted for 10% of tb case necessary santa clara county. these two students won prizes for their posters designed to

8:00. this morning people in oklahoma are getting a brief break from the devastating whenever system that's killed at least nine people. a combination of tornadoes and heavy flooding has caused major flooding across several states. authorities are still looking for a family of seven that were feared drown in a gushing river. calmer skies are forecast for today. the nine were killed when a tornado touched down along a busy interstate where thousands of people were trapped in their cars trying to escape. most of the severe weather the midwest saw is now headed toward the east coast. good morning america will have the latest on the devastation coming up on abc7 at 7:00. >> three volunteers from the bay area chapter of the red cross of packed and heading off to oklahoma to help with tornado relief efforts this morning. lindsay of san francisco is one of them. she is going to be helping with

logistics burks she said most volunteers won't know what they are doing until they arrive. >> they tell you what your job is going to be, where you are going to go, where you are going to stay so you don't actually know until you arrive. because things of changing so quickly and they need help in all different areas, they just want to make sure that what i'm going to do is, you know, what needs to be done when i get there. >> and you can help by donating to the red cross disaster relief fund. just text word "red cross" to the number 99999 to donate $10.00. you can also call 1-800-red cross. lisa, that region has really been battered so they are getting a needed break today. certainly. we are going to get a break from our heat, although we don't have a widespread low clouds and fog. the sea breeze has returned and we are looking at patchy fog along the shoreline. the marine up from monterey and at our coast at about 1,000 feet deep. that will allow for a sea breeze to impact about 20 miles from the coastline.

still warm at our inland east bay with numbers there in the 90s. but the cool down continues into the week ahead. so here's the way it looks this morning. you can see the low clouds and fog up along the shoreline. and with the west wind from ten to twenty miles an hour, it will be breezy at the coast and the next several days temperatures will be running really where they should be for this time of year. here's a look outside. you will notice that it looks pretty good out there from our sutro camera. temperatures in the mid-50s. some of the cooler locations from oakland, 54. good morning, san jose, 55. it's radio in half moon bay with 52 in san francisco and low 50s in santa cruz. from our roof camera, temperatures certainly nice and cool this morning. they are going to warm up. again, with numbers above normal. but the cool down is getting started and much of the work week will be comfortable, but by next weekend you are going to want to wait and see the seven-day outlook. 54 union city as well as los

gatos. in the forecast skies will become partly cloudy this morning, otherwise clear and cool in oakland. the cooling around the bay today and a little bit at the coast. the temperatures in and around 80 degrees for the warmest locations, right on through wednesday, thursday. that includes the east bay valleys. that's not hard to take. we will be look at a big ridge returning by the weekend. so an upper level system will be visiting us and sort of hanging out here the next several days. that allows for more of an on shore push. with that can't get too hot around here. so temperatures will be mild in the week ahead. but for today in san jose, about 8 0 degrees. maybe dropping a degree or two tomorrow. as we go into the middle of the week, upper 70s. look what happens by thursday and friday. we are back into the mid-90s. it will be quite warm around here once again. here's a look at the high temperatures today in the south bay. 80 in santa clara, 84 in los gatos.

how about 79 in cupertino. on the peninsula, low 60s. not a big change there. it will be breezy. 676 menlo park. san francisco coming down about four or five degrees with the upper 60s for you. mid-80s santa rosa, 84 vallejo and back into the 710s richmond, upper 70s tree mont. by the delta they had the red flag warning yesterday but coming down five degrees today. 87 san ramon. we will look for temperatures to continue to cool tomorrow. the coolest days in the middle of the week and by thursday we are turning it around again, turning up the heat. next weekend it doesn't look like an offshore coast so it looks like the temperature at the coast will warm. we can see more 70s. the heat is coming back. and we will let you know how hot it will be in your community, keep track of bay area weather on twitter @livedoppler7hd.

caught on camera. a wildlife group is on the hunt for a person who derailed their research and may have killed endangered fish in the process. as jonathan bloom explains, although they don't know what did it did it, they have a pretty good idea why. >> this creek is one of the few place us can still find wild coho salmon. at least for now. >> at one time there were thousands of fish. >> they have given them endangered and given grants to conservation groups for projects like this one. >> they are finish he would into this net, into the pipe and into into the box here. >> he is head of a group called spawn that are counting and weighing the young salmon downstream and releasing them and see which ones come back to lay eggs. or at least they were. >> they came in and smashed our net box into a million pieces. pulled the piping out of the way, and bent the rebar and

>> welcome back, everyone. we are starting this half-hour with a quick look at the weather with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> hi there, carolyn. good morning to you. a return to the marine layer means cooler conditions. we are starting off pretty nice. mostly clear, some fog along the coast. it will work its way into the beavers. beaches not totally sunny today but elsewhere it's the sea breeze that will take over. 52 san francisco, 56 in mountain view, about 50 half moon bay. there is more cloud cover down around half moon bay toward santa cruz. so that's the trend this morning. the marine layer at about 1,000 feet deep. it will allow for the breezy winds at our coast. some sunshine today. we are still going to look for the warm numbers inland but the

cooling trend throughout much of the upcoming work week. i'll explain coming up. carolyn. >> thank you, lisa. developing news in vallejo this morning where investigators are working on a quadruple shooting. two of those victims have died. it happened at a house party last night. abc7 news reporter kira klapper joins us live from the vallejo police department with the latest. good morning, kira. >> good morning to you, carolyn. the -- neighbors say it happened so fast when a man walked up, yelled something and started shooting. police are still looking for the man this morning after he ran away. it happened 11:45 last night in vallejo. two men were killed. the 41-year-old and a 52-year-old. their identities are being be held until their families are notified. a 25-year-old man was grazed in the head by a bullet. he is already out of the hospital. he's expected to be okay. a 16-year-old boy was shot in the foot. he is expected to be okay and

will be released from the hospital later today. we spoke with one neighbor last night who said she's friends with the family in that house, that they often have get-togethers where people just play pool and hang out. >> quiet like there's no -- anything bad. it's just they have friends like everyday and it's not like they get into arguments. they never have arguments. this is a one-time thing. >> police are looking for only one man, they say. witnesses say he is hispanic, in his 20s or 30s, 5'6" to 5'8" with a medium build. he has a gee tee and a mustache. he was wearing a black baseball cap, gold hooded sweatshirt and black jacket when he opened fire. police are following active leads but they do say they need anyone with information to call the vallejo police. abc7 news. >> thank you, kira. new this morning police in fremont are telling residents to

be on alert after two home invasion rob chris briscoe in a matter of days. both happened around 10:00 p.m. one on tuesday, one on thursday last week on mountain drive and peregrine way. in both robberies the robbers forced open a side garage door end anded up in the paster bedroom while the victims slept. they believe they maybe starting elderly asian homeowners and anyone with any information about this case is expected to call police. new pictures have emerged of the letters layed with the poison rice in mailed to president obama and new york mayor michael bloomberg. the letter, from a person who supports second amendment rights, says, quote, what is in this letter is nothing compared to what i've got planned for you. an fbi has discuss materials team has been going through the house in texas there. they are entering the man who lives there, described as an

army veteran. some have set out anti-government protests all across turkey. police allowed thousands back into istanbul's main square earlier. they fired teargas and turned water cannons on the fall. demonstrators pelted the police with rocks and bottles. and some marched in solidarity with the turks last night. they want to save one of istanbul's last open green spaces. part of a belmont church belltower has been demolished. the church of the immaculate heart of mary shut down friday. building inspectors found the tower had dry rot and termite damage. construction crews used a crane to carry out emergency repairs. they removed the tower in sections until city officials decided it was safe. sunday services should be held as usual today. starbucks customers will have to put out their cigarettes before approaching the coffee

shops from now on. a nationwide ban on smoking within 25 feet of starbucks is now in effect. starbucks said the company is expanding its no smoking policy to cover outdoor seating areas. the idea seems to be popular, even with some smokers. >> good thing. smoking is bad for your health and i really need to quit. you know, if it's going to help people enjoy their coffee more coming to their local starbucks, i think it's a good thing. it will give me one less place to light up. >> the rule applies to the 7,000 cafes owned and operated by starbucks. smoking is already banned in california within 20 feet of a publicly owned building, such as a state, city or county property. coming up next, a look at one developer has in mind to rejuvenate a gritty part of san francisco. the new plans for an old building once home to abc7. a live look from our sutro cam showing you -- pardon?

>> the first new housing development of its kind is scheduled to open in a san francisco neighborhood known for its high crime rate. the lofts in the turned loin are under control to a site that holds special meaning for many of us here at abc7. >> this was once our home until 1985. kgo newsroom, studios and broadcast facilities were located on golden gate avenue in san francisco's tenderloin.

now, after being vacant for nearly 30 years, the site is coming to life again. called the lofts at 7 to honor the tv station's legacy, 88 brand new market-rate rental apartments are going up. they will have high ceilings, hardwood floors and more. >> where we are standing right now on the roof where there's a great view and there's 6500 square feet of fitness center, barbecue grill and outdoor cinema. >> it's really hard -- >> but we are told things are changing. it's evan being called the trendy loin as some of the mid-market hips makes it this way. tenderloin activists believes the new lofts will help the neighborhood transform. >> it has a major effect. it brings people in who have jobs, who can patronize local

businesses and to tell people to come down here. it's better than you think. >> but crime is still an issue. hundreds have signed a petition criticizing the police chief for a decrease in police staffing. >> the tenderloin is down twice as much as citywide. >> the help is on the way. we have two academy class necessary and we are trying to get the staff up again as the new classes come out. >> and that petition from tenderloin residents calling for increased police patrols was delivered to the police chief on thursday. meteorologist lisa argen here now talking about gradual, would you call it a gradual warming trend? >> grueling, then warming -- or cooling, then warming. we are cooling today because temperatures well above normal. the view from mt. tam. you can see a little gray out there. we have a marine layer that's back and the sea breeze will

simply did not work? that's what happened to a marin county woman who said her tv came from the store already broken. what is worse? she could not get a refund. that's when 7 on your side's michael finney stepped in to help. flat screens tvs give you great pictures but the slightest crack can disable the entire set and most warranties won't cover a cracked screen. this woman said her brand new tv was cracked coming out of the box but the warrantee didn't cover a repair and she couldn't return it to the store. >> this disney channel. >> after work shannon at marin city looks forward to a relaxing evening at home, watching tv with her family. she and her children flip channels, disagreeing about what to watch, but on this day they are just happy the tv set actually works. >> i plugged it in because i was excited to have the tv. >> shannon is telling us about her ordeal. she bought a plasma tv at

wal-mart back in february. but when she turned it on, here's what happened. >> nothing. >> no picture, no sound. >> she thought no problem, it was brand new and under warranty. she contacted samsung, which sent out a technician, who discovered the problem. >> he found three cracks in the borderline where the screen is. >> the technician point today tiny fractures on this part of the screen which disabled the entire set. the samsung warranty didn't cover cracks so shannon contacted wal-mart. the retailer said it would not take back a tv with a damaged screen. she also had this extended warranty but that didn't cover a cracked screen either. shannon kept telling everyone, this wasn't her fault. the tv came with those cracks. >> right out of the box. and it was -- it was shocking like really? did i just spend all this morning on this tv? >> shannon said she paid $500 for the tv and $44 for the extended and all she

got was a broken tv. >> called and said we can't help you, sorry. you have to take the loss. >> and i thought, wow, i work hard for my money. he just want a tv that works. >> shannon contacted 7 on your side and we contacted wal-mart and two weeks later the retailer gave her a call. >> what's going on with the tv? >> wal-mart agreed to take back the set and provide a full refund awol mart spokesperson said it was not clear what caused the cracks, but this is not the experience we want our customers to have. ultimately we did the right thing by taking care of ms. barns. now the family is snuggled up debating what to watch once again. >> i was ready to watch tv. i didn't care what i watched. >> a warranty usually will not cover cracked screens for tv sets and repairing the screens can often cost more than the price of the entire set.

look at san jose. nice and clear. temperatures out of the 80s for you. barely at about 80 in san jose. so the cool down anywhere from two to four degrees. mid-50s union city right now. 53 los gatos. you were 91 yesterday. in and around gilroy it was a hot day. and livermore with 97. receipt now 57. still a few 90s out in the livermore valley. the forecast highlights then for today, partly cloudy. san francisco and oakland. otherwise clear. look for cooling conditions mainly around the bay. the coast actually didn't warm up too much yesterday. it was 65 half moon bay. about the seam with the 60s in play today. seasonal temperatures with numbers in and around the 80-degree mark for a high temperature tomorrow and tuesday in our inland east bay. even wednesday not looking that warm. if you like it cooler this, is where we should be for early june. a couple weak systems staying off the coast that are counter clockwise flow will allow for more of this.

the onshore flow of the cool sea breeze throughout the afternoon hours. as a result we are out of the 70s in monterey with 64 for a high today. but look at the rest of the state. very warm. still mid-90s sacramento. 103 in fresno with 92 yosemite and 77 in los angeles. so the marine layer always a good thing this time of year. we have been so, so dry. and temperatures around the bay today you can see that spread once again with the 60s half moon bay. 68 san francisco. coming down anywhere from five to seven degrees around the bay today with more low to mid-70s for richmond and oakland this afternoon. 79 fremont. you were 85. it was 95 in redwood city. so you get the idea of how much cooler. but in concord today and livermore still up and around 90 degrees. if you are headed into the east bay enjoying the game today, 1:05, it will be breezy. sunny. upper 60s to start out and temperatures in and around 70 degrees by about 4:00. the cool down tense throughout much of the week and then not only heating up, but it looks

july. the kittens were held as evidence in an animal abuse case. now that the woman is sentenced, the cats are cleared for adoption. as you can see in this video, they are doing well. they aren't camera-shy either. if you would like more information you can go to abc7news.com and click on "see it on tv." this weekend most bay area animal shelters are holding free pet adoptions. in san francisco the local chapter of the spca is holding a street fair. it's primarily dogs up for adoption, but there are plenty of bunnies, birds and kittens for people to choose from. the weekend theme is "adopt, don't shop >> having a pet will make you live longer. it will mac your heart rate beat slower, and you will know everyone in your neighborhood so you will become more social and popular. >> the free pet adoptions continue today between ten and six at most animal shelters throughout the bay area.
