>> good morning, everyone. thanks for joining us on this sunday morning, june 2nd. i can't believe eats already june. i'm carolyn tyler. let's start with a quick first look at the weather with our meteorologist, lisa argen. >> hey, carolyn t looks clear behind you but the fog fog is back. the marine layer just over 1,000 feet deep. it will allow for a stronger sea

breeze today, 10 to 20 miles an hour today. with that we will cool in the bay. numbers in the 60s yesterday at the coast. that's where we will say. there is mt. tam. cloudiness in the distance. 54 in oakland with numbers around 50 degrees at our coast. so we will look for about a five to seven degree cool-down today and more significant cooling tomorrow. it does last for a significant portion of the upcoming work week. then an about-face. i'll explain coming up. carolyn. >> thank you, lisa. >> eric: developing news overnight. police in vallejo are investigating after a shooting has left two men dead. it happened on lynnfield drive near the intersection of whitney, just before midnight. police say a man walked into a small party inside a garage and opened fire after an argument. two men, ages 41 and 52, were killed. a 16-year-old, 25-year-old were injured. they were taken to the hospital, expected to be okay. the suspect remains on the loose. he's described as a hispanic man

-- latino, between 20 and 30 years old works a gotee. he was last seen wearing a black baseball cap and black jacket. we will have much more on this story coming up in a life report at 6:30. >> later today an arborist will try to figure out what caused a massive tree to come crashing down in san jose. it crushed vehicles and injured several people. one person ended up being pinned under the tree. abc news property has more on the story from san jose. >> reporter: rescue teams used chainsaws to cut the massive tree apart and get to the injured. a couple dozen people were on this lawn bowling field when part of the tree came smashing down. >> the tree shook a little bit out of the blue and we looked up and it started coming down. there was a horrific crack. it was terrific. so i heard -- people were saying run for your life! >> two members of the club got

caught under the branches. one was able to get out quickly, but the other was pinned. other park visitors rant to help. >> an elderly lady had a whole bunch of branches toward her and her ankle was snapped in half. she had a big cut through the front of her head. >> a san jose fire department spokesman said her injuries looked bad, but they were minor. she was taken to a local hospital as a precaution. the massive oak actually split in two. one-half fell on the bowling field and the other crashed on to several cars parked on the street. one man was sitting in his vehicle. >> he had one foot outside, one foot inside so he was half in and half out of the car. he said as soon as he heard the tree falling toward him, he dove under his car. >> at least one person in a vehicle was taken in the hospital also with minor injuries. the president of the club said they were hosting a defend for the defensive coaching staff of the san francisco 49ers. all five of the coaches escaped injuries. >> just unbelievably lucky that

only one person was seriously injured. >> so what caused the massive oak to split in two? an arborist has been dispatched to try to figure that out. in san jose, abc7 news. today a volunteer search party will conduct a search for a teenager with a traumatic brain injury whose been missing for nearly two weeks. authorities say 19-year-old shawn city has not been seen since may 21st when he told his dad he was going to the park. his family said shawn is recovering from a brain injury he was suffering last year. his last call was traced within a two mile radius of baker beach. >> developing news from overseas. a strong earthquake hit central taiwan overnight, killing a person and injuring at least 18 others. [foreign language] >> these videos recorded the

shaking as it happened. the 6.2 tremor struck in the heart of the country. it triggered rockslides in the mountainous areas. one of the rocks crushed a car, killing the driver. taiwanese media is reporting damage to households all across the country from the quake. no tsunami warning was issued. >> another developing story. firefighters hope cooler temperatures today will help them get a handle on a wildfire burning in southern california. more than 1,000 homes were ordered to evacuate yesterday as winds fueled the fire just north of santa clarita. more than 5500 acres have burned so far. the fire that broke out thursday is 20% contained. >> eric: oakland city officials will hold a news conference this week to address the growing problem of side shows in the city. side shows like this one features drivers speeding and

doing donuts in the street. they draw big crowds. a woman is in grave condition this morning after being shot at a sideshow in oakland early yesterday morning. it happened near 106th avenue and mcarthur boulevard. they said side shows occur almostvery weekend. >> they know the time are on or off work or something because they were down there for, let's say, two hours and it took something like this before the police came. >> eric: the 25-year-old woman is mao on life support. two men were also shot. one has been released from the hospital, the other is in stable condition. city leaders say the news conference is scheduled for tomorrow. >> san jose police are investigating that city's 21st homicide of the year and the fifth in seven days. a man was found stabbed to death in this carport near santana row. investigators have no suspects in custody. the string of recent killings

prompted acting police chief, larry, to call an emergency meeting. he did that yesterday with his staff. part of the plan to curb violence is to put more cops on the street. they are conducting police saturation patrols this weekend with about 40 extra officers. the community has been acting for this action, designed to prevent violent acts from happening. patrols are being concentrated in areas known for gang activity. now for a story you will only see on abc7 news. the charges against a man accused of murdering a well-known south bay millionaire were dropped. we were the first to bring you the information in the murder investigation. lisa has the details. >> eric: lucas anderson left this red jumpsuit behind thursday when he walked out of jail a free man.

he was accused of breaking into a mansion with four other people, robbing the multi-millionaire and then killing him. prosecutors admit anderson was never there. >> mr. anderson had been admitted to valley medical center a couple hours before the murder began and was held there in one of the medical units until about 12 hours after was -- it was over. >> the reason anderson was picked up and charged in the first place is because investigators say they found the 26-year-old's dna under the victim's fingernails. anderson's attorney isn't so sure about that. >> that makes the assumption that the dna evidence was collected, tested and analyzed properly. >> we do not believe there's any problem with any of the lab work in this case at all. it will be an incident of finding out where the two individuals' paths crossed. >> abc7 news learned anderson suffers from mental illness, has

an oregon company says the outbreak was traced to a type of pomegranate seed from turkey. the seed was part of a product called townsend farms organic anticccident blend frozen berry mix sold at costco. at least 30 people with hepatitistis reported in five states, including california. >> the average number of days between the time you eat the food and you become sick is 28 to 30 days. >> costco has taken the products off the shelf and is giving the centers for disease control and prevention a list of everyone who bought it. hepatitis inflames the liver and it's usually transmitted by contaminated food and water. this morning more than 2,000 bicyclists from all over the world will leave from san francisco on the first leg of a 545-mile journey across california to raise a.i.d.s. awareness. they will ride from san francisco to santa cruz today as part of the a.i.d.s. life cycle. the journey lasts seven days and it will eventually take the cyclists all the way to l.a.

the bike ride is considered the world's largest annual a.i.d.s. fundraiser. the money benefits the san francisco a.i.d.s. foundation and a.i.d.s. services in los angeles. here's a health statistic that might surprise you. california has the most tuberculosis cases in the nation, one in five. the three cities with the highest tb rate in the state are here in silicon valley. lyanne melendez tells us why. >> san jose, sunnyvale and santa clara are up there when it comes to the number of cases of tuberculosis in america. >> we have a diverse population, we have international travelers, we have tech entrepreneurs that travel globally. >> here's the breakdown. according to the santa clara department of public health 90% were in foreign-born residents. philippines, vietnam, india, china and mexico.

a person's socioeconomic status has nothing to do with it. >> someone can be exposed to tb in one place at one place in time and it doesn't grow up and -- show up and progress to disease until ten years later. >> the tb strains are becoming more and more antibiotic resistant. and when you have that, it becomes a real problem. >> eric: this congressman led this year's california tb control meeting. 24 counties were represented here. all of them agreed the federal government should be ordered to have an adequate supply of drugs to treat tb. right now it doesn't. >> if we don't have a supply of medication, we can't treat the disease. >> honda will go back to congress to ask for more funds which, in the past, have been cut. children and young adults accounted for 10% of tb case in santa clara county.

these two students won prizes for their posters designed to bring awareness in schools. >> if you have tb and it's active, if you like cough or sneeze in any way and you spread the bacteria, the other person or anyone around you or anything you touch and they touch it, anyone can get it. it sometimes can stop them from learning a lot and they can probably die from it. >> a vaccine against tb is not used in the u.s. because it has never been effective. in san jose, lyanne melendez, abc7 news. >> this morning storm-battered residents in oklahoma are getting a brief break from the gas stating weather system that killed at least nine people. a combination of tornadoes and heavy flooding has caused major damage across several states. authorities are still looking for a family of seven feared drown when they were swept away by the oklahoma river. calmer skies are forecast for today. the nine oklahoma victims were killed had when a tornado touched down along a busy

interstate where thousands of people were trapped in their cars trying to escape. most of the severe weather the midwest saw is now headed toward the east coast. good morning america will have the latest on the devastation coming up here on abc7 at 7:00. three volunteers from the bay area chapter of the red cross are packed and heading off to oklahoma to help with tornado relief efforts this morning. lindsey of san francisco is one of them. she will help with logistics so she says most volunteers won't know what they are doing until they arrive >> they tell you what your job is going to be, where you are going to go, where you are going to stay so you don't actually know until you arrive. because things are changing so quickly and they need help in all different areas, they just want to make sure that what i'm going to do is, you know, what needs to be done when i get there. and you can help by donating to the red cross disaster relief fund. just text word "red cross" to

the number 90999 to donate $10.00. you can also call 1-800-red cross. bravo to all the volunteers heading to that hard-hit region. lisa argen is here now talking about our weather, which is very calm. >> yes. it is changing, though. sunshine around the bay. live doppler 7hd right now shows the low clouds and fog here. you can see them along the shoreline. that will be impacting us today as the sea breeze kicks up and allows for much cooler conditions around the bay. not much, much cooler inland. we are talking about the same coastside because we were just 65 degrees yesterday, half moon bay. still in the 60s. but with the west winds 10 to 20 miles an hour, it sets the stage for about five to seven degrees of cooling right around through oakland and fremont, castro valley. a little bit out into the livermore valley, and then more significantly tomorrow. then we sort of stablize through

much of the week. higher he elevations you get a e view but there's the marine layer overhead and that will bring a nice afternoon. 50 half moon bay, 53 san francisco, 55 in oakland. isn't this gorgeous? this is the golden gate bridge back there and just can look at that for quite some time. so nice. santa rosa 54. 59 fairfield and union city and los gatos in the mid. we still have a few 90s in the forecast, but not as many. in fact, it will be the lower 90s. in livermore yesterday it was 97 degrees. we had low 90 toward los gatos and morgan hill and well into the 80s around parts of the bay. but with the fog we are looking at cooling conditions around the bay. inland two to four degrees of cooling. seasonal -- remember what that is? that's the next couple of days.

with the onshore flow, it will also allow for the highs to not become as intense and well into the 90s as it was yesterday. but you can still see out here toward the delta in our inland east bay, still a few warm numbers, the reds. but more of the yellow indicating some of the 80s toward the orange. but not that much. in fact, we are getting closer and closer, starting tomorrow, to average highs, which really is that 30-degree spread. the area of low pressure helping to cool us down. more high pressure backing off for the time being but it will come back into play before the week is out. so if you thought it was hot this weekend, wait until next weekend. 16 today in morgan hill. still warm there. 77 in milpitas. nice afternoon san mateo. 75 for you. low 60s pacifica. san francisco out of the mid-70s into the upper 60s today and in the north bay still

although they don't know who did it did it, they have a pretty good idea why. >> this creek is one of the few places you can still find wild coho salmon. at least for now. >> we are down to the last couple hundred fish returning. at one time there were thousands of fish. >> they have given them endangered and given grants to conservation groups for projects like this one. >> they are funneled into this t,nto the pipe and into the trap box here. >> he is head of a group called "spawn" that are counting and weighing the young salmon downstream and releasing them, and see which ones come back three years later to lay eggs. or at least they were. >> they came in and smashed our net box into a million pieces. pulled the piping out of the way, and bent the rebar and literally stole the net. >> over a thousand dollars and it was all caught on camera, but you can't see the face. they are offering a $500 reward to who can point the finger to the culprit. >> this is someone who had a major axe to grind.

we are starting this half-hour with a quick look at the weather with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> hey, carolyn. here is how it looks downtown. isn't it beautiful from the sutro camera. you see the golden gate bridge. many you have waking up to clear conditions but low fog and clouds entering the bay. we are talking about partly cloudy in san francisco and cooler conditions today, as much as five to seven degrees cooling around the bay. 53 downtown, 55 mountain view, santa cruz has more fog at 51 degrees. we will be looking at a slight cool down today. not as significant for our friends in our inland east bay, but that is going to come your way tomorrow. in fact, it's going to be even as much as ten degrees cooler for the folks in livermore. still talking 90s, though. it still will be warm, but the sea breeze, a health they one, out of the west 10 to 20 miles an hour, allows for temperatures today to be much more comfortable. so we will talk about that. give you the pinpoint forecast and talk about how long this

trend lasts because there is an end in site and the return to some big time heat. that's all straight ahead. carolyn. >>. >> lisa, thank you. >> developing news in view lay show where investigators are looking at a quadruple shooting. two have died. it happened last night. kira klapper joins us live from the police department with the latest. good morning, kira. >> good morning to you, carolyn. i just learned it was a birthday party in a sort of open garage that spilled out into the driveway. a man walking by on the sidewalk stopped, yelled something at all the people, and started shooting. he got away. police are still looking for him this morning. it happened just about 11:45 last night. we have video from the scene. it is a home in vallejo on linnfield drive near olympic drive. two men, a 41-year-old and 52-year-old, were killed. their identities are not being released until their families are notified.

two victims, a 25-year-old man, was grazed in the head by a bullet. she was taken to the hospital, already released. he's expected to be okay. a 16-year-old boy was shot in the foots. he will be released from the hospital today. we are also told he is expected to be okay. a neighbor said it was a relatively quiet community. she was lying in bed. she heard gunshots, went outside and saw two people lying on the ground. take a listen. >> we have had a few incidents around here but nothing like this. this is the first time on this block. >> police are looking for one man. witnesses say he is hispanic, in his 20s or 30s, 5'6" or 5'8" with a medium build, he has a gotee and a mustache. he was wearing a black baseball cap and black hooded sweatshirt when he opened fire. i spoke with the police and they told they they have been working active leads all night. they have been getting

information from witnesses, but they still need anyone with more information to come forward and call them. reporting live in vallejo, kira klapper, abc7 news. all right. lack for a suspect and a motive. thank you, kira. knew this morning, police in fremont are telling residents to be on alert after two home invasion robberies in a matter of days. both happened around 10:00 p.m. one on tuesday, one on thursday last week on mountain drive and peregrine way. police say in both robberies the robbers forced open a side garage door and ended up in the master bedroom while the victims slept. they believe they may be targeting elderly asian homeowners and anyone with any information about this case is expected to call police. new pictures have emerged of the letters laced with the poison ricin mailed to president obama and new york mayor michael bloomberg. the letter, from a person who supports second amendment rights, says, quote, what is in this letter is nothing compared to what i've got planned for you.

an fbi hazardous materials team has been going through the house in new boston, texas. agents are interviewing a man who lives there, described as an army veteran. some have set out on anti-government protests all across turkey. police allowed thousands back into istanbul's main square earlier. they fired teargas and turned water cannons on the fall. demonstrators pelted the police with rocks and bottles. in san francisco, supporters marched in solidarity with the turks last night. they want to save one of istanbul's last open green spaces. part of a belmont church belltower has been demolished. the church of the immaculate heart of mary shut down friday. building inspectors found the tower had dry rot and termite damage. construction crews used a crane to carry out emergency repairs. they removed the tower in sections until city officials decided it was safe.

sunday services should be held as usual today. starbucks customers will have to put out their cigarettes before approaching the coffee shops from now on. a nationwide ban on smoking within 25 feet of starbucks is now in effect. starbucks said the company is expanding its no smoking policy to cover outdoor seating areas. the idea seems to be popular, even with some smokers. >> good thing. smoking is bad for your health and i really need to quit. you know, if it's going to help people enjoy their coffee more coming to their local starbucks, i think it's a good thing. it will give me one less place to light up. >> the rule applies to the 7,000 cafes owned and operated by starbucks. smoking is already banned in california within 20 feet of a publicly-owned building, such as a state, city or county property.

>> the first new housing development of its kind is scheduled to open in a san francisco neighborhood known for its high crime rate. the lofts are under construction at a site in the tenderloin that holds special meaning for us here at abc7. >> this was once our home.

until 1985 the kgo newsroom, studios and broadcast facilities were located on golden gate avenue in san francisco's tenderloin. now, after being vacant for nearly 30 years, the site is coming to life again. called the lofts at 7 to honor the tv station's legacy, 88 brand new market-rate rental apartments are going up. they will have high ceilings, hardwood floors and more. >> where we are standing right now on the roof where there's a great view and there's 6500 square feet of fitness center, barbecue grill and outdoor cinema and fire pit. >> eric: all that grandeur in gritty surroundings. >> the reputation of the loin is really hard. >> but we are told things are changing. it's evan being called the trendy loin as some of the mid-market hypes makes it this way. tenderloin activists believes the new lofts will help the neighborhood transform. >> it has a major effect. it brings people in who have jobs, who can patronize local

businesses and to tell people to come down here. it's better than you think. >> but crime is still an issue. in fact, hundreds of neighborhood residents have seened a petition, criticizing the police chief for a decrease in police staffing. >> the tenderloin is down twice as much as citywide. >> the help is on the way. we have two academy class in and we are trying to get the staff up again as the new classes come out. >> and that petition from tenderloin residents calling for increased police patrols was delivered to the police chief on thursday. >> that petition was delivered to the police chief on thursday. >> our meteorologist lisa argen is here now, and what is your shot today? what are we seeing here? >> looking from our exploratorium camera. this shows a beautiful shot of the sun, but it's not sunny everywhere. the sun was up just before 6:00.

what if you bought an expensive big screen tv and it simply did not work? that's what happened to a marin county woman who said her tv came from the store already broken. what is worse? she could not get a refund. that's when 7 on your side's michael finney stepped in to help. flat screens tvs give you great pictures, but the slightest crack can disable the entire set and most warranties won't cover a cracked screen.

this woman said her brand new tv was cracked coming out of the box but the warrantee didn't cover a repair and she couldn't return it to the store. >> this disney channel. >> after work shannon at marin city looks forward to a relaxing evening at home, watching tv with her family. she and her children flip channels, disagreeing about what to watch, but on this day they are just happy the tv set actually works. >> i plugged it in because i was excited to have the tv. >> shannon is telling us about her ordeal. she bought a plasma tv at wal-mart back in february. but when she turned it on, here's what happened. >> nothing. >> no picture, no sound. >> she thought no problem, it was brand new and under warranty. she contacted samsung, which sent out a technician, who discovered the problem. >> he found three cracks in the borderline where the screen is. >> the technician pointed to tiny fractures on this part of

the screen which disabled the entire set. the samsung warranty didn't cover cracks, so shannon contacted wal-mart. the retailer said it would not take back a tv with a damaged screen. she also had this extended warranty, but that didn't cover a cracked screen either. shannon kept telling everyone, this wasn't her fault. the tv came with those cracks. >> right out of the box. and it was -- it was shocking like really? did i just spend all this morning on this tv? -- money on this tv? >> shannon said she paid $500 for the tv and $44 for the extended warranty, and all she got was a broken tv. >> to be told, we can't help you, sorry. you have to take the loss. >> and i thought, wow, i work hard for my money. he just want a tv that works. >> shannon contacted 7 on your side and we contacted wal-mart and two weeks later the retailer gave her a call. >> what's going on with the tv? >> wal-mart agreed to take back the set and provide a full

a wal-mar spokesperson said it was not clear what caused the cracks, but this is not the experience we want our customers to have. ultimately we did the right thing by taking care of ms. barns resolve the issue with her. >> eric: shannon brought another samsung tv that works perfectly. now the family is snuggled up debating what to watch once again. >> i was ready to watch tv. i didn't care what i watched. >> a warranty usually will not cover cracked screens for tv sets and repairing the screens can often cost more than the price of the entire set. shannon did everything right by reporting the problem on the very same day she bought the tv. our thanks to wal-mart for providing her with that full refund. i'm michael finney, 7 on your side. >> there's a guy i follow on twitter who calls himself carl the fog. and he always talks about his presence of san francisco or

lack thereof. is he out today? >> coming back. there is low fog k clouds throughout the next couple days, certainly tomorrow. for our friends in the east bay, showing low clouds and fog banked up along the san mateo coast and also the marin county coast. we will look for a west wind at 10 to 20 miles an hour. but not making much of an impact in our east bay valleys. that happens tomorrow. but the low clouds and fog will be with us for the next three or four days. the reason being, we have an area of low pressure off the coast. that counter clockwise flow with the low allowing for the sea breeze to bring the temperatures down and the cooler air to your backyard right on through wednesday, thursday. here's a look from our sutro camera. you can see the golden gate bridge. the fog not too deep now. it's at about 1200 feet. we are allowing for temperatures to drop into the 50s. pretty nice out there. 50 half moon bay. clouds all the way down to santa cruz. that's where the fog started

along the central coast and slowly has been working its way up north. mountain view, 5 a. here's a look from vollmer peak looking to the east bay. nothing but sunshine here. you are on your way again to another warm afternoon. but not the 96 in livermore. 97 concord. still pretty warm. 55 santa rosa with 54 in union city. here are the forecast highlights. partly cloudy skies san francisco and oakland this morning. win they get into the sunshine, cooling around the bay. the coast will stay in the 60s. so more 70s toward oakland and union city. we will have more 80s today, as well. but not those mid-8 tos that you had yesterday in mountain view. more like upper 70s. everyone will feel the effects today somewhat and then seasonal temperatures with numbers near 80 degrees tomorrow. a big cool down for the east bay. so two to three degrees of cooling right any from hayward, mountain view and san jose.

and also at the airport where yesterday you were at 77 degrees. so as we go through the next several hours, you notice the red, the darker orange, a little bit further to the east. still the delta will be warm. yesterday they had that red flag warning and those gusty, north winds. but today the winds shifts and that allows for temperatures to come down and bring us a more comfortable afternoon. so as we head out through the next several days, you will notice that we are going to get that on shore flow. that's what's typical than we expect this time time of year. 97 sacramento, 64 monterey. that's about 8 degrees of cooling for you. san mateo, 75 today, as well as oakland with vallejo still warm but out of the 90s. 84 for you. 72 richmond with 60s for half moon bay. in oakland this afternoon it will be sunny and breeze city, but out of the 80s. upper 60s. to the 70s at 4:00.

sean doolittle, a two-run single in the 7th and unfortunately that ties the game at three. a's had 16 hits in the game but one without swinging the bat. bases loaded, two outs in the tenth and josh reddick walked by hector santiago. a walk-in, walk-off victory. reddick gets the pie in the ace, a's win, 4-3. >> we needed a run either way, whether it was a walk or bloop single. i was just trying to do something. and just didn't get it over the plate. >> the giants matt cain seems to have a hiccup every time he faces the cardinals. he am loud 9 runs in one inning earlier this season at at&t. he was hoping for better results yesterday afternoon in game one of a double-header in st. louis. cain was perfect in every inning except the third. 4-0, cards. tony cruz, a double off the wall, scores two. a seven-run third inning for matt. he struck out 9 but allows 1 runs on 9 hits in six inning. cardinals take game one of the double-header, 8-0, the final.

game two, new pitcher but same problem. madison bumgarner gives up three runs. that was also in the third. carlos beltran brings home two with the single. and meanwhile adam wainwright went the distance, allowing one run on 8 hits, struck out 10. cards win game two, 7-1, that final. the indiana pacers will not go away. game 6, eastern conference finals and pacers let the defending champion the miami heat know they are in for a fight in game seven. the pacers super fans still believing, i think. paul george led way with 28 points. posterizing chris bosh. the heat led 40-39 at the half. pacers dominated the second. the third quarter a 14-2 run. hibbard. 11 boards. pacers even the series at three a piece. despite 29 from lebron with a 91-77 victory, game 7 set for monday. ncaa golf.

the meganumber 4. how would you like to have a lunch date with billionaire warren buffet? you will have to cough up some serious money. the auction for the private lunch with buffet is part after fundraiser to benefit san francisco's glide foundation. bidding starts at 7:30 tonight. last year's winner paid millions for the lunch. it has helped the nonprofit glide bring in over $17 million over the years. forty-five cats rescued from a seaside home are now up tore adoption. they were among 113 cats at the monterey county spca removed in july. some were dead or sick. now that the woman is sentenced the cats are cleared for adoption. as you can see in this video, they are doing well. they aren't camera-shy either.
